A Moth to the Flame
Adelyn had never seen so many books-so many magical books. Though her parents library was vast, Adelyn had read all she could on the beasts, magical or not, and tired of reading about mandrakes and other hellish roots. She had come here to learn more about magical creatures and their care, to escape her boring and sheltered life. She had imagined a Hogwarts where everyone was a pure wizard, and were seeking to learn, just as her.
But from what she had seen, most children were more interested in adventure than learning. Now, Adelyn, as most children, yearned for an adventure: but you can't really adventure on your own.
So, she figured that the best place to meet possible friends would either be here, or in the dormitories. But Adelyn didn't want to meet only people she agreed with, she wanted a variety of encounters, almost as if she was studying them.
Adelyn felt bad for thinking that way, her brow knitting as she peered through the multiple rows of "To Have Seen or To Have Been the Herbs?" She let a huff of laughter out, picking a random volume out and finding her way to an empty bench. She lifted her eyes from peering down at the cover and searched around the room for someone who might be approachable.

Aeri had been around the campus lately, trying to find the best spot to just sit down and read. She had previously visited the entrance hall, the small hall, the corridors, the library... everywhere she went, people were huddled in groups either sharing inside jokes or talking about their next great adventure.
She had hoped someone would have approached and invited her to hang out by now, but unfortunately, a lot of them were already busy minding their own business. She would have approached first, but she found it difficult to introduce herself to large crowds.
Aeri decided, at last, to just visit the study room and be by herself. Maybe she'd be lucky enough to meet other lonely souls in here. She sat down on a couch by the window with a book propped right in front of her, subtly eyeing the studying students around her.
She noticed a girl holding a book (she wasn't sure which book it was because she couldn't read the title from afar), and then their eyes met. She looks friendly, Aeri thought. She stood up, left her book on the couch, and walked towards the interesting student.
"Hi, I'm Aeri. What book are you reading?" Aeri asked.

Adelyn had been picking at the worn table, her attention span waning after the third chapter in her selected book. She had heard the patter of Aeri's feet, and she sat straight to attention, her eyes rising to peer up at the other girl.
"Oh, hello! To be quite frank, I don't believe it would be of any interest to you, as it is of minimal interest to me. However, my name is Adelyn and you're welcome to join me on a hunt for a better book?"
She replied quickly, her hands moving to close the book and tuck it under her arm. She was hoping the girl would say yes, but she also knew it would be reasonable for her to say no.
Adelyn quickly grew a bit worried, had she spoken funny? Had she made herself seem stuck-up and posh?
Adeyln hoped not, keeping a polite smile on her lips as her thoughts focused back on more positive things. Such as, perhaps she did nothing wrong, and this girl would be happy to indulge her. Adelyn really had no drive to do more reading, but it was a good excuse to get to know someone a little better.

She seems nice, Aeri thought. The blue linings on Adelyn's robe suggested she was a Ravenclaw. Maybe she was just trying to be polite? Ravenclaws often tend to be invested in every book they read. It would not be out of character if she was just inviting to go look for a book, so she would have a reason to continue reading her own book in peace. Aeri suddenly regretted not thinking this through.
"Sure, I mean, if that's fine by you. I didn't mean to disturb you, anyway, I just thought you weren't busy. I didn't really think about how this conversation would go, considering students come here to study. It is a study room, after all..." Aeri realized she had gone utterly defensive. This was the first time she had ever started a conversation with a stranger.
"Sorry. Can I start again? I don't quite know how to introduce myself, do I? Right. I think I saw an interesting book on the third shelf yesterday. Would you want to check it out?" Aeri asked in an unintentionally small voice, almost as if it was a whisper. She had always hoped she would soon overcome her timidness, but apparently, today was not that day.
Luckily, the polite smile on Adelyn's face had not faltered. Was she amused? Or maybe even embarrassed on Aeri's behalf? What a silly first encounter.

Adelyn blinked a few times, intently listening to the other girls rambling. To Adelyn, the other girl seemed very bold, until her voice dropped into the telltale whisper of timidness.
Without skipping a beat, Adelyn stood, tucking the book under her arm.
"I mainly suggested it because it is much easier to speak to someone when you aren't both staring at pages of a book. But I am happy to accompany you to go search for that book with you," Adelyn replied politely.
She then smiled genuinely, realizing they were both pretty socially in-adept. This notion relaxed her quite a bit, as she realized she was not the only "weird" kid.
"I mean, I didn't see any rules that we have to study in the study hall.." she added, mischievously winking towards Aeri.
Glancing down at her book, Adelyn added "Oh, but I do need to put this book back before we go on our...adventure..It is on the nearest shelf to where we are now, so it won't take long. How about we just put this up and then figure it out from there? " She suggested, positioning the book against her chest, her arms moving to cradle it.

"Sure, let's do that," Aeri answered, feeling relieved that Adelyn seemed genuinely interested in her proposition to initiate some sort of friendship (hopefully), "Lead the way."
Aeri briefly hesitated, however, wondering if Adelyn was studying for a class before she had interrupted her reading, or if she was preparing for an exam the next day, "You were reading for leisure, weren't you? You don't have homework to finish or anything? I mean, I could help you with that... or maybe quiz you a bit if that's what you prefer."
Aeri started walking towards the nearest shelf, her fingers unconsciously fidgeting through the spines of the books propped up on the tall shelf. She realized what she was doing, so she took the book her hand was resting on and pretended to flip the pages as if she really meant to browse through it.
"I have always loved to read, you know... but I reckon it somehow distorted my perception on life, in general. Through books, we witness countless of conversations between the characters, it creates the illusion that dealing with people is easy. And then in reality, we find ourselves mumbling words that only make sense to us, as we scramble to utter coherent sentences. It's even disappointing sometimes, how our lives are a little too ordinary compared to the adventures we've read, or the journey of our favorite character.. ours become pale in comparison, don't you think?" Aeri felt silly when she heard herself speak her thoughts out loud.
"Would you rather we put your book back, then finish this conversation in a more interactive environment?"

Adelyn was quick to place the book where she had originally snagged it, her fingers delicately running down its spine. She turned to watch Aeri, listening to her carefully.
"Imagination is not so far from reality," she replied casually, shrugging her shoulders dismissively.
Adelyn put a finger to her chin, thinking for a few silent moments before she formulated a good response, and had processed all that the girl had said.
"Reading is just a good way to prepare yourself for the life outside of the one you know. I read to grow and it helps me to process what I have yet to understand in the real world," Adelyn responded quickly, a tired look to her eyes. She glanced at the other children in the library, her thoughts briefly flickering on an anxious feeling within her chest. She brushed it off with a soft inhale, her polite smile towards the other girl returning quickly. Now was no time to care for the other's opinions.
"Now, I do not know where you have in mind, but as long as you don't plan on trying to murder me, i frankly do not care," She replied calmly, a polite smile on her lips.
