mid-September 2026 - evening
While Evgenia had begun to get the hang of things with the help of older students, she was still - quite frankly - struggling. She had somehow managed to maintain top marks in a few classes, but she knew it wouldn't last for long if she didn't start understanding all of the content better. She was sailing through Charms and Potions by the skin of her teeth. Herbology was fine, but Defense Against the Dark Arts was dicey. Zhenya had always been fairly decent in school and she knew that, but it was quite incomprehensible to her how she was doing this well. She didn't even understand at least half of what her classes covered on any given day!
She flipped slowly through her Herbology notes, eyeing the rest of the room as she did so. There weren't many people in the study room on this particular night, but that could change. Zhenya yawned, then tried to keep from slumping in her seat. She'd stayed up entirely too late the night before working on homework, trying anything she could find or think of to help her stay up. It had worked until about two in the morning, and she'd given up on getting anything else done and finally gone to sleep.
That had probably been a bad choice. Especially since it was looking like she'd have to do it again tonight.

It was a bit of a chilly evening, so Colette brought her scarf with her as she walked outside of the Common Room. In her bag were notes on different subjects—Charms, History, Herbology, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. She planned on doing her Homework and Essays on them at the Study Room. The Library was always an option, but she felt the need for a change of environment that day.
Walking inside the rather empty Study Room, she scanned the surroundings and noticed that the tables were occupied with different friend groups doing their homework and studying together. All but one table where a Hufflepuff student was currently occupying.

Colette observed the girl from a far. It looked as if she was struggling to keep herself awake. She doesn't blame her, though. It was getting rather late and the sun had already set a few hours ago.
Hesitant to join her, she walked to the shelves first, getting some fresh parchment and ink before she starts to work on her Homework. She also stumbled upon an old reference book for Charms, old in a way that her mother might have used the same book on her own Homework before.
Once she picked it up, she walked to where she saw the Hufflepuff student was. It was a small desk, fit for only four people, or maybe even two if they have a lot of things to put on the table and spare chairs. Earlier, she saw the girl struggling to keep awake. Now that she sat in front of her, it seems like she was already out cold, sleeping on an open Defense Against the Dark Arts textbook. Colette didn't know what to do, blinking twice at the sight of a sleeping girl in front of her.
She looked around for a moment before looking back at her, debating whether she should just let her be or wake her up. With a sigh, she just took a glance at what she was working on. Turns out they have the same Homework for Defense Against the Dark Arts and her scrap parchment has multiple writings on it that she crossed out, which Colette assumed were ideas she failed to find the right words for.
Colette looked at her own notes and decided to copy the things needed for the homework on an extra parchment. She folded it, labeled the back, and slipped it between the pages of the girl's open textbook (which was now a pillow for the time being). She hoped it would be at least of help to her once she wakes up.
After that, Colette started to focus on her own Homework, flipping the pages of her own textbook and started on her work. She made sure to make as minimal noise as possible to not wake the girl in front of her up and let her have her rest.

Evgenia woke from some sort of shallow micronap to somebody sitting in front of her, the sound of a pen scratching on paper prominent in the room. Dang it. She'd been too close to actually falling asleep. That was a mistake she had to make sure she didn't repeat; she had too much to do. Classwork, schoolwork, studying, then the entirely separate problem of finding somewhere decent to skate and then learning some kind of freezing spell. Did they even teach anything like that here? It seemed like a spell that would be taught in the charms class, if so.
Evgenia's green eyes didn't quite open fully as she listened to the person write, then she heard paper folding and subsequently felt something thin slide between the pages of her still-open textbook. Huh? Interesting. What was this, now? Evgenia hadn't been able to see what it was (she could guess it was the now-folded paper, though) or who had done it, as her face was angled away from the person. Still, she was determined to find out.
Her face raised from the textbook pages slightly, eyes sweeping to the girl - a Slytherin student, judging by her uniform - in front of her, then down to the folded page peeking out from the textbook. She could see part of the label, and from there filled the blanks in herself.
"Thank you for the answers," she said, her voice cadenced with a bit of sleep but strong despite her accidental micronap of sorts. "I appreciate it."

Colette looked up from her paper with only her eyes, a bit startled that her newfound, slightly drowsy company had awoken from her nap. She finally got a better view of what she was working on when she lifts her head up from the table—the girl's papers were a clash of DADA, Herbology, and even Charms work. Thankfully, they weren't wrinkled from her rest.
"No problem," she replied, giving her a quick small smile before looking at the girl's work again. "We have the same homework... I got to take additional notes from this book," she slides the book to the other girl's direction, "...so I thought it might help you as well."

Colette quickly looked down at her own notes again, trying to remain composed. She had a habit of being unusually rigid when interacting with new people she never met before, anxious about turning a normal conversation awkward. When she took a quick glance at the girl before her, she finally recognized the face. This girl was her classmate on every class, no wonder they share the same homework and she looked familiar the first time she saw her. But she never got to introduce herself to her since they usually don't sit together in class and they are clearly in different houses.
"I'm Colette, by the way," she says a bit quietly, not wanting to be too loud and unintentionally catch the attention of the other students in the Study Room with them. "Colette Sanchez. We share classes together."

Evgenia listened passively to the Slytherin girl across from her, still miffed that she had started to fall asleep. "I see. Thank you." Her green eyes blinked, shifting back down to her papers and books, narrowing into a squint as she scanned some of them to refresh her memory. "Evgenia Starkova," she said after the girl spoke her own name, also noting that they had some of the same class periods. She seemed shorter than Evgenia, with long dark hair and eyes of darkest brown. Colette Sanchez. The name didn't sound very familiar at all, but if this Colette girl had said they shared classes, this must be true. She probably wouldn't have said so unless she knew that it was true. Or, maybe Evgenia would have recognized her if she was a little bit more awake.
She studied what she had left to complete, rolling her eyes hard down at her unfinished work. "You suck," she muttered down at it. "You would think wizard homework could just do itself." Exhaustion was making the young girl irritable. She picked up her pen and scribbled her name onto the charms sheet she had forgotten to label with her name and gone without noticing the omission until now. A mental sigh blew through Evgenia's mind as she skimmed through the Defense Against the Dark Arts paper - she'd need to copy this onto her own homework and reword it - and then looked back up at Colette. "Where did you find that book? I might need it in the future."

Colette nodded in acknowledgement upon hearing the girl's name. Evgenia, what a unique name, she thought to herself. It would definitely take some time for her to learn saying it properly out loud. She gave her a small nod, finally able to put a name to a familiar face.
"Nice to meet you," she responded quietly, before the both of them went back to focusing on their work.
They were working quietly for a moment, with both focusing on the papers before them. Even the Study Room itself was peaceful, save for the occasional sounds of papers flipped, quills scratching on parchment, and students yawning at work.
Colette was about to dip her quill in the bottle, but her hand stopped mid-air as she heard Evgenia muttered beneath her breath...while somehow glaring at her parchments as if they annoyed her. She suppressed a chuckle hearing it, not wanting to accidentally irritate the Hufflepuff further. Though she has to admit, the homework they were given were quite tedious and time-consuming, so she completely understands her irritated state.
"I'm afraid the homework won't do itself even if it's magic," Colette mumbled just to try and ease up the girl a little.
After a while, she saw her scribbling on what seemed like their sheet for Charms. And when she asked about where she found the reference materials, she rotates the book before her to show Evgenia the title and author to help her search for it when she needs to.
"I got the ones for Herbology and Charms on that shelf over there," she points at the shelf two tables away from them. "Then this Defense Against the Dark Arts book is tucked somewhere in the Library. Had to borrow it."
Then she looked up at Evgenia, noticing the slight irritation clearly written on the girl's face.
"We can both use it tonight, if you'd like."

"Thank you," Evgenia said in obvious relief when Colette showed the book to her. Now she knew what she would be needing to look for in the future, should she ever need the book. She noted the shelves Colette pointed out, tucking the information away into her brain. "I will probably end up needing all of this soon." She nodded at the Slytherin student's generous offer to share the Defense Against the Dark Arts book for the night, a lifeline she hadn't even recognized that she was kind of needing. "Would you mind sharing it? I should really go to sleep soon . . . I haven't exactly been going to sl -" She was cut off by a massive yawn, then her sigh of pure exasperation after the yawn had passed by. "To sleep at a decent time. Lately." For the better part of the month, really. Two or so weeks of poor sleep and late bedtimes was beginning to drive Evgenia up the wall. "Too much homework." Homework - a funny label for it, since it wasn't like any of the students here were going home to do the work. This school should call it something different. Dormwork? Librarywork? Ha, funny. Evgenia must truly be going nutty. Since when did she spend her time ruminating on long-established terms for concepts or items? Mama would be very exasperated if she knew what I was thinking.
