At first glance, the Hogwarts library was simply rows and rows of books with armchairs and tables placed around the large room. But as Ainsley scanned the rows of books for something to read - if only to take her mind off of home for a few minutes - she found that it was something else entirely. Not only did the Hogwarts library seem to have a magic of it's own, she quickly found that it was often a place that groups came to study, and those who needed a break came for silence and a good book.
As Ainsley's eyes swept the row, her eyes fell on a leather-bound, slightly dusty book. She glanced around, and when she saw she was alone, reached out and slid her finger across it, pulling it carefully off the shelf. She smiled at the title and quietly weaved through the shelves of books until she reached a table at the quieter end of the library. Her brother-in-law had mentioned this book once before, but when Ainsley had asked him if he had a copy, he'd refused to give it to her, saying simply that Ainsley's sister would not like her reading children's books.
But now that she was here, at Hogwarts, Ainsley supposed that it didn't matter if Wren wouldn't want her to read it, because Wren would never have to find out. Ever since she'd gotten her letter, she'd been curious about wizarding families, but Marshal, whom had left his pure-blood family behind to marry a muggle, refused to tell Ainsley anything about his parents or siblings, if he'd had any. She slowly opened the book, smiling at the little sketch and began reading, hoping to be finished with enough time to return to the Gryffindor common room to get some homework done before supper.
"Fairy tales?" Ainsley jumped, losing her grip on the book which landed open on the table. She stared up at the smiling student and sighed. she picked the book back up, closing it and using her finger as a bookmark.
"You scared me" she said quietly and then mentally facepalmed. You scared me? Really? Wasn't that obvious, Ainsley?, she berated herself. She glanced back up again, smiling slightly as she gestured to the book. "I, er...never got to read them as a child..."

Allie walked into the Library with her tall stack of books to return. Quickly, she made her way through the dozens of shelves and put the books back into place, watching them as they floated up into their rightful places. Slowly, the pile of books in her arms was disappearing, until there were no more books in her hands. She wandered the shelves, looking for something new to read.

After a few minutes, Allie found a book that looked interesting enough. She slipped through the shelves and shelves of books until she found a table with only one person sitting at it. Allie glanced at the book the girl was reading.

"Fairy tales?" Allie asked with a smile.

When the girl started and stammered a few words, Allie put out a hand to stop her. "No, no, it's alright. I read them all the time." She smiled again warmly. "Is it okay if I sit here with you? I promise I won't be loud or distracting," Allie asked softly, hoping the girl would agree. "Oh!" Allie remembered. "So sorry, I'm Allie. Allie Lewis." She stuck out one of her hands for the girl to shake, then set her book down onto the table with the other hand.

“No, no, it’s alright. I read them all the time.” the girl said, smiling.
Ainsley examined her, sighing in relief. She’d feared for a moment that the dark-haired Ravenclaw girl was going to tease her for reading children’s stories, but now that she’d realized she wasn’t going to, she was more than pleased to speak with the girl.
“Is it okay if I sit here with you? I promise I won’t be loud or distracting,” the girl asked. Just as Ainsley was about to tell the girl she was welcome to sit with her, the girl began speaking again. “Oh! So sorry, I’m Allie. Allie Lewis.” the girl - Allie - said, holding out her hands for Ainsley to take. Smiling, Ainsley glanced at the book that Allie had sat on the table and shifted slightly, taking her hand.
“It’s nice to meet you, Allie Lewis. I’m Ainsley Thatchere.” Ainsley glanced down at her own book, glancing around. She’d feared that someone would happen across her while she was reading, but she hadn’t actually thought that anyone would come this far into the library. Except now that someone had happened across her, Ainsley found that she didn’t really mind having company. So, she waved at the seats across from her and grinned at Allie. “Er...about sitting here, of course you can.”

"Hi Ainsley." Allie smiled when Ainsley shook her hand and then she sat down in the chair across from her. "And thanks, this is one of my favorite places in the Library as well. It's away from all the loud noise and the people that make that noise." Allie gave a small laugh and flipped her book open to the page she had been reading in one swift move. She had this weird thing where she could just flip a book open and it would go to the page she was on before she had closed it. It wasn't bad though, it was actually pretty useful.

"Oh!" Allie looked over at Ainsley. "Sorry, do you. . . like, want to talk? Or read? Or. . ." Allie smiled a bit nervously. She was so used to just pulling out a book and reading, sometimes she forgot that other people weren't like her and liked to talk more than read. She blushed and turned to face Ainsley. "Um. . ." She didn't know what else to say, so instead she just closed her book with a thud and placed it into her bag, which she snapped shut. Then she turned back to Ainsley.

“I can agree with you about the noise,” Ainsley smiled slightly. She might complain about the noise to everyone else, but in reality, the noise was often welcome after a long day in class. It was nice to go back to the common room and find her fellow Gryffindors laughing and joking with each other, instead of the arguing or crying that she often came home to after school. Ainsley watched Allie open her book to a random page. At least, Ainsley originally thought it was a random page until Allie looked down at the book and Ainsley realized that it was the page she’d been looking for.
“Oh! Do you...like, want to talk? Or read? Or…” Allie trailed off, and Ainsley smiled, glancing at her book again. The colorful leather cover still interested her, and as far as she could tell, the fairy tales were quite interesting. She was interested in reading, but she could always check out the book and read it later in the common room.
“It er...doesn’t really matter to me. If you want to read, you’re more than welcome to,” Ainsley said, gesturing toward her book. “I was just catching up on stuff I missed when I was little.” she shrugged, opening the book and resting it on the table.

Allie looked at Ainsley curiously as she set down her bag, placing it under her chair. "You missed out on fairy tales when you were little?" she asked, tilting her head slightly to one side. She didn't mean to be nosy, she was just curious about everything, and this was something that seemed interesting enough. She wondered if Ainsley was muggle born. Maybe she wasn't used to all this magic.

"Are you reading the Tales of Beedle the Bard? Or some muggle fairy tales?" she added. Allie had never actually read a muggle fairy tale, but she assumed they had to be something like the Tales of Beedle the Bard. Although, she wasn't completely sure if the Tales were counted as fairy tales. . . she started to think about that, which led her onto thinking about something else, and then something else, until she totally forgot about Ainsley sitting there. After a long pause, she was jerked back into reality and laughed at herself.

"Sorry about that," she told Ainsley, "I just start thinking about one thing, and then I think about something else. . . sometimes I forget about the world around me." She had never actually done that with another person sitting next to her, so she felt like she needed to explain it more than she probably had to. "I mean, it's probably just a Ravenclaw thing. . ." she paused. "You're in Gryffindor, right?" She glanced at the colors on Ainsley's uniform.

“Er...yeah, my brother-in-law said he read me a few of these when I was about five, but I don’t remember them.” Ainsley explained, smiling slightly.“ My sister is a muggle and when Marshal adopted me, she was going to university. Apparently, once she graduated, he didn’t want to risk me asking her if she knew what the name of the book was.”
“Are you reading the Tales of Beedle the Bard? Or some muggle fairy tales?” Allie asked. Ainsley grinned. The Tales of Beedle the Bard were nothing like muggle fairy tales. Muggle fairy tales are all about princesses finding their prince charming. But so far, Ainsley hasn’t seen a single princess in any of these stories. She much preferred these to muggle fairy tales. She lifted the book, showing Allie the cover.
“Tales of Beedle the Bard.” she responded, still smiling. “They're quite fascinating stories.”
Allie doesn’t respond, and when Ainsley peered closer, she realized that the girl’s eyes were glazed over, almost as though she was thinking really hard about something. She frowned slightly, a tad bit worried, but then she blinked and the look was gone.
“Sorry about that,” she said. “I just start thinking about one thing, and then I think about something else. . . sometimes I forget about the world around me. I mean, it’s probably just a Ravenclaw thing...You’re in Gryffindor, right?”
“Er...yeah. My brother-in-law was really excited. He was a Gryffindor too. The first of his family.” Ainsley shifted slightly, sliding a piece of parchment from her bag. She quietly folded it and stuck it in the book, closing it. “So...you’re from a wizarding family?” she winced, glancing over at Allie. “Sorry, you don’t have to answer that. My sister says it’s rude to ask questions…” she frowned slightly, glancing down at the book. “like that,” she added, lamely, shrugging slightly. She could practically hear Wren fussing about how rude Ainsley had been to Allie. Wren would've been so angry with Ainsley for even considering asking if she came from a wizarding family. She forced a smile, looking back up at the girl.

"What's your favorite Beedle the Bard story? Mine is the one about the Three Brothers. You know, the one with the Elder wand, Resurrection Stone, and the Invisibility Cloak." Allie hesitated and then added, "Even though the story is kind of. . . creepy, I mean, I really like it." She tried for a smile. Allie thought she was probably making no sense. "Sorry," she apologized, although she didn't really know why.

When Ainsley asked her if she belonged to a wizarding family, she answered. "No, no, it's fine," Allie said immediately, not wanting Ainsley to feel bad. "I'm from a wizarding family, yes." she paused. "And it is completely okay to ask me questions, I like answering them. . . and I guess I do ask a lot of questions myself." she laughed. When Ainsley added something about her sister, Allie asked, "So, you have a sister, right? I don't have any siblings, although I really wanted a sister when I was younger. Now though, I feel like I am fine being an only child. . . especially since I'm finally at Hogwarts!" She grinned.

"Have you started classes yet?" she changed the subject, turning it away from herself.

Ainsley thought for a second. She hadn’t yet gotten to the tale of The Three Brothers, but she recalled Marshal telling her about the three brothers. That was what had drawn her to search for the book in the library, because she’d been so fascinated by his simple telling of the brothers that she had wanted to read the full story. But so far, her favorite was The Wizard and The Hopping Pot.
When Allie mentioned wishing she’d had a sister, Ainsley frowned and looked down, but didn't respond. Often Ainsley’s best friend, Lily, had stated that she wished she’d had a sister. Lily never understood why Ainsley hadn’t enjoyed spending time with Wren. But Lily also didn’t know that Wren blamed Ainsley for the two of them being landed in an orphanage. When Allie changed the subject, Ainsley sighed quietly. She really hadn’t wanted to talk about Wren. Not here, where she’s finally away from her.
“Have you started classes yet?” Allie asked.
“Not yet,” Ainsley shook her head, slightly disappointed. “Marshal said that Transfiguration and Charms are fun, but you don’t get to learn much in first year. But I really can’t wait for Defense Against The Dark Arts. What about you?”

Allie noticed Ainsley's hesitation and uncomfortable look when she said the word sister, and she was curious about that. Of course, Allie wasn't the type of person that would immediately try to find out why Ainsley had been so uncomfortable, she was almost the opposite. When Ainsley asked about her classes, Allie replied with enthusiasm, as she always did when it came to classes.

"Well, I just started them, I have been to Charms, Astronomy, and yes, Defense Against the Dark Arts." she paused to consider the rest of Ainsley's question. "Also, Defense Against the Dark Arts was super fun, we learned two new spells on the first day! I turned in my homework a bit ago. . . I hope I get a good score on it!" she smiled a little. "But I think the class I want to get to the most is probably Flying Lessons. I have always wanted to learn how to fly well. I mean, my parents bought me a toy one for my birthday, but it only hovered a few feet off the ground - nothing much." She got lost in her memories for a second.

It had been a warm spring day in May, Allie's birthday. She ran outside, and there, right on the lawn, was a small broomstick, just her size. She rode it all day, and although she fell a lot in the beginning, she soon got the hang of it, loving how the wind whipped her hair back as she flew. She was, of course, a little disappointed that it was so close to the ground, but at least it flew. . .

"Oh, sorry. . ." Allie said with a small grin, looking at Ainsley.
