Lily Isobel McCoire. Fifth year duellist. Or so she'd like to say . It had been a bit since she had dueled and that's why she found herself in the Duelling Club on a Saturday afternoon, when she would rather be hanging out with her brothers. But nooooo the good McCoire was sitting here watching others duel. One group caught her eye and she turned her head to look. She was friends with both, one a sixth year Ravenclaw Ebony Vetra, one of Lily's own best friends. . She knew that Ebony was a powerful quidditch player, so she should be a good duellist too. The second person had spectated one of Lily's own duels with a young slytherin girl, Amethyst Castillo . Her name was Guinevere. Guinevere Russetwood, they had been on the same team in Castlebruxo's Capture the Flag. She was also a sixth year. Well, Lily thought to herself. This should be interesting. Two sixth years duelling against each other. Lily sat back with her drink and wished that she had popcorn. But alas, popcorn was not meant to be! But at least she would be watching fireworks, figuratively speaking. But hey, who knows? Maybe there will be actual fireworks.

xxxWhy was she here?
xxxGuinevere's life was so boring that she was close to wishing for something interesting to happen. Thus within the past year, she’d gotten herself into more duels than all the other duels she’d taken part in during her life, added up, and it seemed that the sixth year was intent on keeping that streak up. It was an obsessive episode, perhaps. Guinevere was not one for crazy activities, but there was something about harming other children for sport that gave her the chills, and in the good way.
xxxThere was obviously a very real reason she had quit from the actual Slytherin team, but now two years removed, Guinevere felt in a way dissatisfied with her stupid younger self's decision and was determined to make up the time lost.
xxxAs a result, she spent most of her time that was not already allocated elsewhere to dueling or simply haunting the dueling club. She had little to no obligations outside of going to class, doing homework, petting her cat, and eating. Sleeping was purposely omitted. When OWLs were still knocking on her door, she had developed a habit of staying up late, and now that there was nothing, Guinevere also simply didn't feel the urge to go back to her old ways. Hours-of-the-day-maxxing, if you will. And since the lack of sleep usually never showed up on her face, or even so very lightly, there was little harm to be done in staying awake just a couple more hours.

xxxSo here she was, not too many days from the start of the school year. The dueling club was not too crowded. Some duelists were scattered about, so as Guinevere slipped through the heavy doors she was not cause for much attention. On her person she carried only her wand and her jacket slung across her arm, as she was not feeling too cold as of now. She considered practicing with the fake target practice people, but that was no fun. Dueling was only fun if you got knocked unconscious and lit on fire multiple times.
xxxShe scanned the room. Aha! Fortunately, she saw a face she recognized. Unfortunately, she had had some awkward history with the girl. Deciding it was whatever, she walked over. Whilst walking she noticed Lily, a Gyrffindor she had met both on the piste and on the foreign grounds of Castelobruxo before. She gave a wave and a nod.
xxx"Hey, so, uhh," she said to Ebony, should she generously grant Guinevere an audience. She coughed. Despite being teammates at Capture the Flag over the summer, they hadn't actually talked that much? And the Ravenclaw in front of her was tall, and that was saying something 'cuz Guin was tall, too. "What do we think about a quick practice duel?"

As Ebony Vetra heaved the oak doors of the Duelling Club open, only one question was recurring in her mind: why was she here? She was probably the furthest thing from a duellist that one could find, and it was not as though she had been invigorated by the previous duel that she had participated in. Was it enjoyable, lighting children on fire and casting endless Knockback Jinxes? Somewhat — adrenaline-inducing momentarily, she supposed. But the beater clearly was not built to be a duellist, for she had found a duel against first and second years somewhat challenging already. It was evident that she had to brush up on her spellcasting skills; though she was no perfectionist, being so unbelievably incompetent in something was rather unacceptable. Becoming more well versed in other sports was not a bad thing.

The Duelling Club room was quite stunning; levitated candles illuminated the ceiling, floors beautifully worn with the marks of spellcasting, well-drawn portraits lining its walls — though nothing could beat the view of the Quidditch Pitch from up high, unfortunately. As the girl paced toward the back of the room, she spotted Lily, a Gryffindor girl whom she had met way back in second year. She couldn't recall whether the Gryffindor was a duellist or not, considering how long ago they had become acquainted.

Ebony was mulling over the option of simply sitting at the edge of the piste and observing those duelling and practicing around her. Perhaps she could wait until individuals began to trickle out before having a go at one of the training dummies that lined the sides of the room. Fate didn't seem to like that idea very much, however, for somebody approached her (Rowena Ravenclaw was not smiling upon her today).

"Hey, so, uhh, what do we think about a quick practice duel?"

The brunette froze — it had been almost four years, but the voice was still recognisable. Turning around confirmed her suspicions; Guinevere Russetwood was talking to her? Ebony had met the Slytherin in the Library once upon a time, and she had not seen the girl much after that awkward encounter (though they had briefly come across the other during Capture the Flag event in Castelobruxo earlier this year). The childish tensions that had arisen what seemed like decades ago had long since dissipated. She did not expect the girl to recognise her, much less approach her. And Guinevere was asking to duel — wasn't she a duellist? The Ravenclaw's ego would not allow her to refuse however much she wanted to; she could become quite competitive when it came to sports, no matter how much remained hidden under her mask of nonchalance.

"Hi — yeah, sure, why not?" Ebony stepped gingerly onto the piste, drawing her wand and hoping dearly that her lack of preparedness was not given away.

Lily watched as Ebony came in and she waved to the both, super excited for this. Lily got her in her seat and pulled out a bag of popcorn as she leaned back, with her ankles crossed, almost like she was watching a movie. Which is almost exactly what she was doing. Watching a movie. A very, fast-paced, adrenaline rushed movie. She watched as the two older girls moved to a platform and got ready to duel. Guinevere cast Impedimenta at Ebony, and, not to Lily's surprise at all, the spell was a hit. It slowed Ebony down a bit and it obviously messed with her casting abilities. However, even with Impedimenta slowing her down, Ebony was still able to cast a successful Impedimenta of her own. Guinevere must have been feeling not that good today, cause she was a little slow evading...so slow the spell actually hit her. Lily enjoyed this round immensely, the fireworks already starting. She sat up and moved seats closer to the duel, so she could see better than she waited for the second round. Lily had no idea who might win and she wasn't even bothering to root for someone. Whoever wins wins, they were both her friends.

---The Slytherin girl practically whew'ed in relief after hearing Ebony agree. After all, an incident from four years ago had to subside sooner or later, and if today was not the day it was going to, well, it would be a fun duel. Especially knowing that the Ravenclaw was a captain and beater for her house's quidditch team... Guinevere just hoped the duel wouldn't come to a fistfight. While magically beating up kids was fun, physically... not so much, mostly for herself. But the point was that she hoped it wouldn't come to that. The ex-Viridian Viper was the possessor of pristine skin and weak knuckles.
---"Lit," she started, immediately letting her stiff talking down. "It would've been pretty boring just aiming at the mannequins, huh?"
---Guinevere took a step onto the piste, the patterns on the wood floor familiar to her. Her shoes lightly clicked as she walked to her position. Faintly, she contemplated on a strategy. It was a new year, surely that called for a degree of experimentation. Guinevere, being a rational woman, was however well aware of the very real possibility of a spell backfiring, or worse... failing to go off. Confringo was still new to her, and she feared the shards of explosion that would ricochet from the initial blast. She was asleep when her professor taught Confundo- no shot she could conjure up the spell only from a vague incantation and even vague-er idea of the wand

movement. It left her with Impedimenta, which was still a new spell for her too. She hadn't landed it much, missing her mark more often than not. Perhaps it was not an issue on her spellwork, rather her aiming. However, she had been hit with it before, thinking it even more an useful spell.
---She raised her wand at Ebony, wondering briefly if casting spells at each other was really the best way to get on good terms with the other. It was Hogwarts, after all, but surely there were some ethical and moral considerations...? Say, one of them was knocked out- no, if that were to happen, Guinevere would call for an end to the duel. Today was not the day for a Hospital Wing run, neither for herself or Ebony. God forbid either one of them encounter that bitchy first year going off about Guinevere's potions abilities again.
---Enough contemplation. "IMPEDIMENTA!" As they said... a person who thinks all the time, has nothing to think about except thoughts... With a swift wave of the wand, the spell went off. Then she felt herself slow. Shit, she thought, thinking it had backfired. It didn't take long for the pieces to come together and Guinevere realized that it was not her own spell. Both of them had landed equal impedimentas on the other. "Quite the popular spell," she mused.

Guinevere stepped onto the piste as well, her steps holding the certainty of a well-trained duellist. It was as though the Slytherin girl knew exactly where to place her shoes, the precise spots that would provide an ease for aiming on the duelling piste. Ebony's own steps, conversely, were stumbling and unfamiliar. The texture and placement of the piste were foreign to her, feeling strange under the soles of her shoes. Despite her having participated in one or two duels before, the piste did not make enough of an impression on her for it to become any less alien. The brunette was clearly an impostor standing in a duellist's position.

One could say that she was confunded upon where to begin. Now standing solo on the piste, she was quite lost. At least in her previous duel, she had had a partner; this time, it was uncoordinated, a muddle of inexperience clouding the Ravenclaw. Giving herself an obligatory pre-duel knuckle crack, the wand was drawn to be held in a defensive position, though she was unsure what spell the wand should cast. The Impediment Jinx had functioned quite decently against her previous opponents, so perhaps a renewed attempt would yield even better results. She was still exploring the realm of more advanced spells such as the aforementioned, but she resolved to try anyway. She had realised that the duelling piste, for her, though she of course chased victory, was only a strip for experimentation and spellcasting practice. So what if her spells backfired? The worst that could happen would be a visit to the Hospital Wing, and Ebony had had her fair share of being bludgeoned by bludgers — she was no stranger to the place.

It seemed as though Guinevere was about to fire a spell of her own, and so she pointed her wand firmly to its target, simultaneously yelling "impedimenta!" with a certainty and confidence that did not exist the last time she had stumbled onto the piste. It seemed as though the spell had hit? The instance created quite the flurry of confusion. Ebony turned for a split second to look at the side of the piste, glimpsing Lily watching them with a bag of popcorn in hand — wait, where in the bloody hell had the girl gotten popcorn? She turned back toward her duelling opponent, only to realise that her movements were more lethargic than they were before. It finally struck amidst the confusion that the two had hit each other with the same spell simultaneously. She supposed great minds think alike; maybe they were not as different as she had once thought.

As Lily watched, she noticed the effects of the rounds previous spells going into effect. Guinevere was slow in her evading, and Ebony's accurcy was affected. Guinevere tried to cast the Cracker Jinx at Ebony. Lily had learned that spell in her third year but had never used it before. It was quite an interesting spell as Lily watched it being cast. However, the Impedimenta must have been affecting Guinevere's ability to cast because she missed Ebony all together. Insteadd, the blast hit Guinevere fully, causing her to take the damage meant for Ebony. Ebony was next to cast a spell, and this was one Lily casts often in her own duels. Flipendo. It was a great spell and dealt a lot of damage to the other person. However, Impedimenta was affecting Ebony's ability to cast as well, because she also missed Guinevere. The spell backfired onto Ebony, making Ebony take the brunt of the damage as she flew back. Lily winced. That had to hurt. Especially with the effects of Impedimenta already in play then Flipendo on top of that. Lily truly hoped ext round would bring more luck to these duellists, otherwise she might just recommend they hang up duelling for a bit. A long bit.
