"Get away from him. That Slytherin is crazy!"

A dumbfounded Thomas would glance around for the intended party of concern. It was not Vlad’s date, who pointed her wand at Marion with dwindling patience, or the burned Gryffindor who just missed bringing the blonde harshly to the green surface. Not Miss Bellamy, who Thomas stripped of her weapon before her palm struck the Raven’s cheek. Not even the Slytherin with an aura that radiated a sense of dread that Thomas was helplessly drawn to. The blonde was eyeing and motioning to Thomas. His introduction with Marion festered within her like a poison. There was no undoing his vague proposition to explore time and physics…with her body. A position he attempted to mend with a dance but only walked away with a fresh coat of pumpkin juice.

Her evaluation that Thomas teetered on the line of sanity was not entirely incorrect, but the girl had trouble identifying her immediate threats. If Thomas’ intention were to harm the trio, it would have been acted on already. A defense of his position would be in order. His tone was neutral and without life. “A simple misunderstanding, I’ve never laid a finger on her.” These words were intended only for Vladimir, in the event he chose to heed Mary’s warning. “Only tried to help her.” The statement bordered a fuzzy line of manipulation and rare truth. Thomas never held the intention to harm the girl. The fear he conjured was to serve as a method of control to get what he wanted. She was either too naïve, or too foolish to make this connection.

The words may prove idle, a series of chain reactions from closing hostilities would make this a poor moment to explore Thomas’ status as cray. A flash of light sent Marion tumbling backwards, several feet away. The boy’s silent acknowledgement of approval would find Opeila Seilun…is she really my guardian angel? Not that the seer ever had the intention to help Thomas directly. But her intervention in Thomas’ affairs was trending further away from coincidence. Whether it was to end Erin’s pummeling of Thomas during a pillow fight, or this present moment, where she sent his accuser flying. Surely he was grateful, but this was no time to express gratitude.

Bellamy closed in on Vlad with a vicious attack. Thomas caught the goblet before impact, grasping the stem to sharply force it from Ivy’s hand. Unfortunately, it did not impact Ivy’s hand from the continued movement to slap the boy. The Raven was indifferent to the strike, instead finding Thomas’ eyes. "My hero," Success. The deed was done, coming to the older boy’s defense provided the image Thomas yearned for. He offered a harsh look of disapproval towards Ivy, releasing the goblet harmlessly to the ground. It was time for Thomas to walk away. The seed was now planted, needing time to grow. The door opened but would not be walked through until a later date.

Not so fast. Thomas felt a tap on his shoulder, likely a precursor to an attack, the immediate reaction from his so-called partners. He turned to find the other Slytherin brunette seer, Tyranni. A girl he did not mind, but she would do everything in her power to put a damper on his view. She did not appear bothered, at least not in the disturbed sense, she too was playing games this evening. Her hands found either side of the boy’s neck, prompting his widening eyes before she ascended to her toes and connected their lips. Bewilderment delayed his reaction for a split second before fumbling to escape her gorilla glue grip. The lit torch (hopefully inadvertently lighting her hair on fire) dropped from his hand from the startled activity and to her feet. Forget about Petunia’s deal, Ryan’s antics, and Tri’s existence…this, this forced kiss was the most scarring moment for Thomas Lestrange since arriving at this godforsaken castle.

Tryanni felt his fight, allowing the panicked escape. Her grip remained, leaning close to his ear to whisper. “Choose your sides wisely. You do not want to become my enemy.” It did not take long to click, this was pre-meditated sabotage. Thomas wrestled away from Tyr, creating distance from the girl with a few quick steps to his rear. His heart pounded, left huffing with a piercing glare. What was there to say, any natural reluctance to engage physically was bypassed. The confusion replaced with rage to exact well deserved repercussions. No, that did not mean to kiss her back. A rule his mother instilled would be broken once again.

"Finish her before she turns on you,"

The choice of words peculiar and would’ve been met with more examination if Thomas was not already brimming with an urge to get even. If any consolation, the following choice was multi-purposed. In addition to getting even, another opportunity to further his passage through the door. Icy blue eyes locked on to Tyranni, the ball of his foot twisting in the grass before his launch towards the seer, lining her up with Ivy in the sudden rush. He attempted to throw his shoulder harshly into Tyr, hoping to make her collide with Ivy.

Out of the frying pan, and all the way back in again. If he was gonna be a drama lord, Piérre was going all the way. Hardly seconds ago, Piérre had been given the strict order to stay inside and not run back into the fray. Unfortunately, those people didn't know that Piérre was a bit of a selective hearer; and he wanted to make sure that Philipe was alright. After all, Piérre was his bug-brother now.

If he was going to make sure his gentle bug brother was okay, and knowing now what Miss Cy had told him-- that Mosps were often attracted to flowers-- Piérre had to grab a flower or boutonnière or something of that sort. As he sprinted across the mid-April hills, Piérre reached down and tried to grab an wildflowers that he could find, anything that could catch the attention of Philipe.

Upon reaching the party, after ripping away a bunch of violet flowers from one of the slightly less burned hanging bowels, Piérre was just in time to see Miss Cy transfigure the roaring flames into an albino snake. Wicked.

With a slight whistle through his teeth which would easily be lost in the smoke and chaos, Piérre began to unravel the splints and bandages around his arms, already looking around for people that could use them. He first spotted Rafa, who had been thrown onto the dance floor. Piérre's Quidditch captain was looking beat up... like he had both received and thrown more than a few punches.

"Cap'n!" The Britalian shouted a little nervously, Cap'n! Here! Are you okay?!" Piérre tossed off a splint some bandages, still moving past him. "I gotta find Philipe! Help everyone you can, and for the love of God, please don't be stupid!"

Trying to get a clear look around, Piérre watched a large blimp-like insect spiral to the ground, purplish in hue, and having drifted away from a couple who was floating in the air overhead. Charlie and Evelynn, no doubt. Why hadn't they tried to leave yet?

If that was Charlie and Evelynn... and Philipe had been nearby when Piérre had left...

"Philipe?" Piérre asked, almost kneeling to the bug. "Hey, buddy, you okay?" The Britalian would have reached for the insect for a gentle pet and pat, had it not been for the bristling of the poor Mosp's proboscis and the flaring of its duel stingers as the kid drew close. The lit- big bug was terrified.

Piérre's eyes softened as he tried his best to ignore the chaos swirling all about him in the form of smoke, screaming, and other methods of terror. "Aw no... Did someone hurt you? Here buddy... I heard that you and your friends like flowers, do you want some nectar?" Piérre gently tossed the bundle of purple flowers and wildflowers mixed with grass towards the bug, warily backing up a bit in almost a submissive way. Piérre had no aim to harm the insect that he had come to risk himself for.

"Come on, bud... it's okay... I'm here." Piérre was prepped to avoid, if the insect was too terrified to allow the peace offering. "You and I can get out of here when the professors take care of the fire and the scary humans."

Ah. The Mosp was gone.
Slipped right out of his hands, after... well...

He was dizzy.

Felt nauseous. Lightheaded. Merlin, he regretted this. Why did he even grab the damned thing? What possessed him to-? Well... it didn't matter. Quite literally... out of his hands.
He struggled, grabbing the broom to brace the pain in his thigh, a large cut and gash beginning to spill out a little. Luckily he still held a tight grasp on the makeshift net he'd used, which the Mosp had wriggled free from, well, how lucky could it be?
"Forget it..." He started, half mumbling. "Sorry... you're right... I'm a hypocrite-- stupid, really, wh...y did I even... grab that stupid thing...?" A soured, weak chuckle left his lips. "Let's just... leave, Decipio... I'm.. sorry for yelling."

He averted his gaze from her, embarassed by his own inexplicable, idiotic actions. Really, it was unlike him to be so...
So stupid.

He braced the broom weakly, hunching over in pain, with a slight stuggle to stay on as his leg twinged in pain, and guided it. "Go... Please, I don't want any more stupidity tonight, from others-- or myself." It was almost a weak beg, a pitiful sight really, clutching onto his ripped up clothes, vision blurrier than he wished it was, from both pain, and tears of embarassment.

Don't cry.

But he already was. He was such an idiot. Why did he even think to grab some stupid bug?! To just... ignore her when she warned him. She was right, and he was wrong, and between his migrane, this ball, the massive gash in his leg, and his own stupid, idiotic speech-- he was mortified to open his eyes and let the drops escape, but if he wanted to leave, he would have to.

His breathe weakly hitched as he opened them, shiny tears falling to the pitch below. He hated that he was being such a worthless idiot- who cared about a stupid bug? Why did he even try? Why did he even... embarass himself like this, in front of a poor girl who, albeit naive, seemed to have good intention in her words?

"Go..." He urged again, voiced cracked and crumbled. "Before I... fall off."

As the fires began to dwindle, Kateri watched her colleague, Cypresse, mold it to her will as an oversized snake. If she wasn't so caught up in the chaos going on, she would have taken a moment more to admire the young woman's handiwork. Other students seemed to be rushing to exit whether out of panic of the mosps and fire or the fact now with the sight of Professors they would be in deep, deep trouble. Except.. one student seemed to be running towards her, not away. The young girl looked frantic as she stared up at Kateri wide eyed.

"Alright, it will be alright." Her voice was calm in an attempt to soothe the student in front of her as she pointed in the direction of the boy who was in need of help. "Come with me." Kateri motioned for the girl to follow and made her way over to where she was needed. Making sure the girl stayed close, should she choose to follow, Kateri lowered her gaze upon the boy lying almost lifeless on the ground. Immediately she turned to the two others who stood close by. "I need the three of you two help get this young man back to the castle." With a wave of her wand and incantation, the professor cast a charm on the boy that would help him painlessly walk his way to safety.

If the spell works

Kat would turn to the students as the boy's body would rise on it's own in an unconscious state, directing them towards the castle. "The three of you are to protect and guide this young man back to the castle. Do not go to the hospital wing. You are all to head straight to the Great Hall where you will be taken care of." Whether they gave looks of concern or not she would explain quickly before urging them to leave. "I've placed him under the Somnambulist Charm for the time being, now hurry!"

If the spell for some reason...does not go off properly...
Curse you dice Gods

Kat would turn to the students and assure them things would be fine. "I will place him under a charm so the three of you can guide him back to the castle. Though you are not to go to the Hospital wing, instead you need to head to the Great Hall. The boy will walk on his own, simply protect one another and get there safely." She would then attempt a second cast if the first fails - most likely in a future post for mod sake.

Crystal clutched her and groaned, not expecting a chair to hit her at full force. She held back curses while she was trying to bring her focus away from the pounding of her head, and back to the danger that they were both in. Her vision swam and the noises seemed to get louder, but she tried to focus. Clenching her fists hard enough that her nails dug into her palms, she grounded herself. Things were focusing, and it seems that the pitch had become even more chaotic. The hiss of snakes replaced fire, and there was even more screaming. The only thing it seemed that Crystal had done to even help was get that one stupid mosp distracted. As it was focused entirely on the vase of flowers. But that wasn't helping her at the moment. Crystal balanced herself, and looked over at the girl she accidentally hit. She wasn't doing very well, the girl had broken down crying.
Crystal very quickly knelt down to try and comfort her, she needed to calm her down. "Hey, it's alright. We will be fine," she told her, trying to not sound super panicked. She was about to hug her but she hesitated, knowing that some people didn't like to be touched when they were like this. Shoving her arms down by her side, she instead got in front of her and tried to grab her attention. "You will be fine, we will get out of this," she promised the girl. She didn't really know how to comfort her, but they needed to stay safe. She wasn't quite sure if Mildred was alright, and pretty soon one of them might be in danger as well.

Artemis swore as under his breath as he watched his spell miss the targeted mosp. He was hoping to reduce the number of these creatures and get the kids back to the safety of the castle as soon as possible, but with them all attacking the creatures with their hands, feet, and wands, it was proving a bit difficult. He could at least take pride that most of his students at least were handling themselves in this situation better than others.

He turned to move to another group of students who were fighting the mosps with various instruments and one with his bare hands. Artemis couldn't help but shake his head at the boy's insane antics but so long as he wasn't hurt in the process, Artemis would let them be while he went to take care of another mosp. Of course, turning once more to take in the surroundings, the Charms Professor noticed that one of the students with a death wish, whether by his hands or a mosps stinger, was back on the pitch and kneeling next to a mosp. And was he feeding him flowers? What the hell was wrong with these damned kids?!

Artemis growled and watched the boy with the mosp closely, but when it seemed as if he wasn't going to get hurt, the man turned away and focused on a boy from his house that was seriously injured. He raised his wand and pointed it at the mosp going in to attack the prone boy again, noticing from the corner of his eye that a student had thrown a chair in their direction as well. Whether she was trying to distract the mosp or get its attention drawn to her, either idea was a dumb one in the professor's eyes, but it was a commendable effort. He truly wished some of these kids wouldn't act like bull-headed Gryffindors and just learn to save themselves. It would make his job a lot easier.

With his gaze focused on the mosp again, he opened his mouth to cast until he saw, not only the student distracting the mosp but Cy's giant snake that she conjured moving its way toward the mosp. She hoped that it would eat the little bugger because he'd be damned if he saw his student get stung. He looked to be in bad shape from the distance that Artemis was standing at and knew that in order to move the boy he would have to heal him a bit to ensure he could walk a bit. Running up to @Percival Gray, Artemis knelt down and cast "Reparifors" on the boy, hoping that it would be enough to get him to his feet so that he could leave the pitch and return to the castle.

His main hope was that his spell would actually work this time around and not miss.

Mentioning- @Katrina Walker The Mad Lad!

𓋒

It was official. His fellow housemate was absolutely mad! Crazy! Insane! Call it what you will, it didn't change the fact that Elsian was left feeling a mix of slightly impressed bafflement at the older girls determination and annoyed fear as he saw her run off after making a literal foggy night for the rest of them.

As the other dashed off he almost ran after her without thinking. Pure instinct to try and force the other to stay in a group. A base thought that probably would have ended up horribly if not for Logan grabbing his hand and snapping him out of that dumb idea and forcing him to actually focus on the words on the other girls who didn't have an immediate death wish in his eyes.

The girls...Alexis's words faintly registered in his head, though his main attention had been drawn to the pure chaos Katrina had ran towards. With how horrible the smoke smelled, plus the new magic fog, it'd felt like his lungs were burning, heavy almost. He was drawn back by Logan's snark, a small dry laugh escaping him despite the severity of this whole disaster of a party. Merlin it felt like this had been going on for hours but surely it couldn't have been more than half an hour? An hour, before everything had went to hell.

"I'd prefer small talk not being part of my last moments," he added dryly squeezing Logan's hand in return. Better to keep his head out of the clouds right now.

"But it's Elsian," he offered, "at least we know each others names if we perish." he sighed dramatically, falling in step with the rest of the group towards their destination...The brooms? Gosh, he shouldn't have zoned out after Katrina's little stunt but really. That girl she'd ran to had been on fire.

At Logan's words he perked up, forcing himself to listen and actually almost stopping entirely if not for the fact he had to move with her. "Teachers?" he asked, tilting his head as they went, "I...think so?...." Turning his gaze to look at River he frowned a bit, mulling over the rest of the conversation.

Honestly flying out of here might NOT be a good idea. At least, not for them. They were only first years after all, and he wasn't sure how good Logan was on a broom.

"I wonder if they'll give us detention?" he muttered half joking half curious, feeling better about this whole thing with a bit of dry humor. "But honestly? Brooms fall through we can all just make a run for it to the stands or past the front now with the Professors playing pest control.... We're just more for them to worry about while here."

He could still hear distant crying and fighting even from where they were making their way away from the majority of it. Part of his felt horrible. Urging him to try and help but he knew it'd just cause more trouble. All the spells had just caused more problems and he wasn't willing to add to that unless things looked extremely dire for them.

As Ana launched herself, she could feel that she wasn't going to succeed in tackling her target. She wasn't a physical fighter in any way, shape, or form. Sure, she could slap others without a second thought, and even throw a punch now and then, but an actual physical fight was not the place the former Prefect performed the best. As though in slow motion, she heard some boy (Vlad) warn her target, and subsequently cast a Knockback jinx at her. That wasn't good. She knew that she was on the verge of fainting from her burns, and a Flipendo would be spectacularly unhelpful at this point in time. Still moving in slow motion, or feeling as though she was anyway, she braced herself the best she could for the spell, somewhat grateful for the relief that blacking out would provide. After a moment, she was shocked by an unexpected ally (Astrea) taking the curse for her. Time sped up again, and Ana watched her friend - what else could she call the Slytherin at this point? -get hurled in what looked like a vastly uncomfortable manner. As an aside, three thoughts occurred to her. The first was she clearly had to be friends with Astrea, since this was how she and Rafa had met (although look how well that worked out), and the second was her questioning how on Earth she kept ending up in situations that required others to take curses for her. Thirdly, she wondered what quality she possessed that made near strangers willing to do something like that for her. She wasn't particularly nice or helpful to others. Scratch that, she knew that she was something of a bully and without a doubt a huge bitch. Still, she clearly wasn't that bad if near strangers kept doing things like this.

Snapping back to the moment, Ana cursed when she missed the insane blonde(Marion). It was made worse by the fact that her friend(Rafa) was flung into some boy she didn't recognize (Selim). Still, she couldn't help but smile slightly. Served that asshat right for abandoning her like he had. God, it was really best for Rafa that Ana hadn't had much time to fully consider his actions, seeing as she'd been on fire and then fighting people. Her rage was a storm was brewing though. One neither Rafa nor Ana would expect.

Ana couldn't help grinning slightly when her target was hit by someone else's (Pei) knockback jinx. Her grin widened into a smile that probably looked absolutely insane to any onlookers when she saw Ivy slap the boy who had attacked her. Good to know that she wasn't completely without people to depend on.

As she had a slight moment to catch her breath and observe her surroundings, she made note of several things. First and foremost, the fire was gone. That was good, Ana supposed. No, better than good, seeing as that was the same fire that had nearly killed her and - SHIT. Where had that other boy gone? The one she'd injured(Victor)? Her heart raced and she glanced about. She exhaled slightly when she saw him surrounded by people trying to help. She knew she certainly couldn't do anything for him at this point, but she wanted to keep an eye on him. She had to make sure he didn't die. After all, she wasn't completely soulless. And, alright, she didn't want to get expelled for accidentally killing someone.

Another spell shot Rafa's way, but Ana didn't think it hit him. Pity.

It also dawned on her that there were several professors that had arrived while she was trying to tackle Marion. Whelp, maybe they wouldn't give her detention because she was injured?

Injured setting flowers on fire. Flowers that were stolen. That she had wanted to use to fight mosps and possibly other students. Flowers that had been full of blood magic. Flowers that had hurt another student. After curfew. At an illegal ball. Where she was still fighting people.

On second thought, she sincerely hoped that all she got was a detention.

Still, she began to hope that it was all nearing an end. That she might make it out of here conscious. That hope disappeared when the same boy she had tried to attack her before shouted some nonsense about her robbing him and his friends and using her friends as pawns. Bristling, she wanted to correct this fool. First off, she wasn't a thief, though she couldn't speak for her best friend, and secondly, she wasn't using them as pawns exactly. Sure, she was ignoring them and everything they said to do what she wanted, but that just applied to her. If they chose to help her because of her amazing, magnetic personality, that was their problem, not hers.

That ass seemed to decide that now was the time to attack her. With professors there? Really? Sure, there was only three of them, two now, since Ana had noted one had left with an injured student. The odds that neither of the remaining adults would notice his attack seemed small to her, even once she considered that the lovely Professor Cy was blind. Quite frankly, the transfiguration professor seemed to see more than most people with two eyes, at least in Ana's observation. Still, she was a Beckett, and she would not let a blatant attack like that go unanswered. Since she didn't yet know any defensive spells (an oversight in Hogwarts teaching, really. What school taught Incendio and offensive spells long before Extinguo and any defensive spells?), she had one option. Attack back. She was confident. Though she was young, she was an talented and powerful witch. "Flipendo!" she said, flicking her wand at her attacker as she met his eyes with a death glare. If she was going to pass out, she was going to do it in the most epic way possible.

Jack was almost beside himself with relief when the bag was levitated by none other than his fellow Slytherin, Bridget Collins, and kept from the flames alongside his efforts to dampen it and the ground around it. With the aid of magic and the arrival of several teachers on the scene, the fire was soon put out and though a good portion of the choking, black smoke remained, it slowly seemed to be dissipating.

Though he expected Rafael to retaliate against them, it took Jack a few good minutes to realize why the Gryffindor had not. Even he had heard Ruka calling over the flames previously that Rafa might have wanted to go protect his 'girlfriend', though who Ruka might have specifically been referring to, Jack had no clue. Not that he cared just then. All he could focus on was how thankful he was to the clever Ruka for having successfully lured away Rafael to tend to matters elsewhere.

Somewhere in his peripherals, Jack was vaguely aware that Rafa was just then attempting to fight a mosp with his bare hands. A moronic thing to do, but what else was new? At least his idiocy no longer appeared to directly endanger Victor's life.

Marion had also attempted to stop the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain, it seemed, but as she soon appeared to be attacked both physically and magically, the odds of her success didn't look too good. Why was everyone attacking her?! Jack couldn't understand. Marion hadn't done any harm; not like Rafa had. She had simply tried to knock him backward, not hurt him - especially not like Jack had half a mind to.

And with good reason, too; Rafa's actions likely would have made him a murderer whether he knew it or not. Why did so many students here take such rash actions without having any idea if they could handle the consequences? To Jack, they all seemed to be behaving as if they were either insane or stupid and he was leaning toward the latter for a large majority of them.

Well, at least Marion didn't appear to be at death's door like Victor did and she had Vlad trying to help defend her. And...Thomas...trying to defend Vlad? Well, that was unexpected. Even more unexpected was Tyranni going up to surprise Thomas with a kiss on the lips which the boy was clearly not expecting nor welcoming. Jack winced in sympathy. Poor Thomas.

Well, at least he could probably defend himself and wasn't in any mortal danger. What in the world had Tyranni meant to do by that, anyhow?! That was a low blow! Even Jack, who had used kisses to escape dire situations before, had only ever kissed people on the cheek. Stealing mouth kisses...now that was a whole other level.

Glancing over to where he had left Victor, he saw Ruka there beside the unconscious boy and carefully attempting to aid him with his precious orange burn salve. Jack would have to make it up to him later. Tears stung the corners of his eyes due to a mixture of his concern for the third year and his immense gratitude for the second year. He could hear Ruka talking to him now that the flames had ceased, speaking as though they were friends although Victor probably couldn't hear him and Ruka had likely never met the older Slytherin before.

It really sunk in then how much trouble Jack had caused Ruka during the course of the ball alone. After the boy having tried to help him when he put himself between Thomas and Erin, he gave him a torch and even tried to go along with Thomas at Jack's request. Now Ruka was using up a great deal of his special burn salve that he could have saved for himself just to aid a potentially dying boy he didn't even know. He was going through so much trouble...and for what? Not for Victor, a voice inside Jack told him. In Ruka's eyes, it was every person for themselves in a dog-eat-dog world, so why would he have decided to suddenly develop compassion for a complete stranger when he might have ended up losing his life right then and there? No, Ruka was doing this for him - something he was sure he wasn't worthy of in the least.

Since when had he, Jack, become so reliant on others? He certainly had no right to be. There had been Selim during the incident with the spiders and Ruka now with his torches and burn salve and extensive repertoire of spells. If they offered help, that was one thing, but to ask for it? He'd done that with Erin, too; relied on her knowledge and her trust in him to show him where the bludgers were.

And what had he done for them in return? He'd hurt them.

He should have known from that early February morning when he had allowed Rafael and Jo to beat up on him at breakfast - only for Ruka to jump in on the fight. Jack should have realized; just because he himself didn't think he would interfere in a quarrel between two others without knowing what was going on didn't mean Ruka was the same. The boy seemed loyal to a fault. In that way, perhaps he was like Victor.

But why? Did Vladimir deserve Victor's friendship, loyalty, and trust? Jack knew he himself, at least, didn't deserve anyone else's. What had it got them? Erin had a broken heart. Selim had a broken mind. He should have learned since that day that he couldn't just keep throwing himself recklessly into danger when those he cared about and who cared about him in return - like Ruka - were around. Unfortunately, though, it was a habit; a habit he'd formed due to his unfamiliarity with being cared about and with caring about others properly in return.

And I say to myself,
when there's time for a word...
As I gracefully grow
more debauched and depraved...

The fragments of a song that continued to haunt him played again at the back of his mind.

Ah, love may be strong,
but a habit is stronger;
And I knew when I loved
by the way I behaved.

Jade, Ren, Opeila, Persephone, Selim, Erin...all victims or near-victims of his horrible habits. How long before Ruka became one, too? Or Flash, now that he'd tried to get through to him as well? And Victor? What of him? Could Jack possibly break those habits before ending up hurting anyone else too badly?

Perhaps that had been one of the true reasons he had asked Ruka to show him he could care for himself for a month. Maybe he'd subconsciously done it to try to keep Ruka from worrying about him and to keep himself from worrying that Ruka would try to get in the way if he made stupid decisions. Was that really fixing himself, though? Ruka had made such an effort to prove he could stand on his own two feet. And what was Jack doing? Repeating the same mistakes over and over?

It felt wrong to ask for help, but if he was going to try to avoid being as reckless and attempt to break the habit of jumping into whatever situation he felt like regardless of the potential hazards, then maybe this was a good start. In any case, he fully intended to try to make everything up to those he hurt regardless of how much time it took him to do so. Erin had followed him blindly and done what he asked and wanted with little regard for herself and very few if any questions asked. Ruka was the same. He felt he owed them more than he could ever repay them, but the least he could do was start somewhere in trying.

If he could stop putting himself in harm's way on a whim, it would not only serve the purpose of keeping Ruka from jumping in after and risking himself just to make sure Jack was safe, but Jack could improve himself overall as a person as well. If he could break bad habits such as those, even if he might have needed a little help to do so, then maybe he could break the vicious cycle that scared him far too much to attempt making real friends.

Aside from Ruka, a pair of other students came to Victor's side, speaking with the Gryffindor second year presumably about how to help the burned Slytherin. Jack was just about to head toward them, trying to listen in, when Bridget's voice startled him back into recalling Victor's bag. Apparently, she didn't intend to hang around it, commanding - no, threatening Jack to tell her what he found in the bag if he decided to go through it.

Astonished by the other girl's audacity, he wasn't quite sure what to say for a moment before finally opting to respond with a grin.

"I might have been happy to tell you anyway, but now I'm really wanting to know how you think you could get me to regret not telling you," the redhead told her. He might have wanted to laugh if he was in better spirits, but the very real possibility of Victor's death weighed heavily on his mind. Going through the dying boy's bag wasn't exactly on his list of priorities just then.

Grateful that the bag and its contents seemed to be relatively unharmed, Jack kept a close watch on it as he rushed to gather as many of the hundred blood magic roses from Wren's bouquet as he could. He wasn't sure in what state he would find them or if there would be much to bring back at all, but he was determined to at least try. Placing his own bag down alongside Victor's, he began to hurry about, picking up what remained of the magic roses and placing them carefully in the vase with what was left of their colored water while using his torch from Ruka to light his way in the evening's shadows.

As he did so, the Welsh boy tried to note what else was going on around him. Professor Vernatis briefly stopped by to check on Victor and speak to Ruka as well as another girl. This girl, who had previously put her mouth on Victor's for whatever reason, was someone Jack seriously wanted to have a talk with, but knew he shouldn't have tried in the state he was in just then. Ruka, at least, seemed to keep Victor relatively safe, likely more aware of what could hurt or help a burn victim more than the rest of those students put together. Thank goodness they had Ruka.

Selim had appeared to successfully leave the Quidditch Pitch with Percival Rainwood, another of their dorm mates, to whom Jack was extremely grateful. Though the redhead had originally been counting on Thomas to watch over Selim, he had since been compromised and seemed preoccupied with his own problems and people to help, so he couldn't be blamed, especially when Jack had asked Ruka back from Thomas' side to help him instead. Regardless, at least Selim seemed safe for the time being.

Flash was another matter, but the brunet was also attempting to seek aid from the appearing adults which Jack thought was a smart move. Though he still lingered by Willow and Opeila to help the girls and had been targeted by Vlad previously, the Welsh boy thought Flash would probably be okay from then on. Okay enough for Jack not to have to constantly check on him, at least.

Coughing still, Jack was just retrieving the last of the roses he could find as the smoke gave way to make them easier to spot when he saw something white up ahead. As he moved closer, he realized it was a living thing - a snake. A huge white one at that, too. Hazel eyes got round and pupils dilated as he set his sights upon it, lowering himself close to the ground as if to catch it. With his fatigued mind as muddled as it was, he didn't think too much on why it was there or what its presence could have meant. Instead, his thoughts drifted to the Japanese dorm mate who had told him some interesting things about pets he had had back home.

"I had them since I was six, not too long, but I always enjoyed the presence of my snakes more than other people. They were also there to help me with my trauma or when I get stressed... maybe I'll get another when I get over the loss."

Maybe...just maybe...if he caught this snake, was this a way he could make things up with Selim? At least a little? What if a snake was all that the assassin-minded boy needed to return to normal?

"The one who was killed was named Akari, a male ivory ball python."

Jack may not have been able to recognize an anaconda from a python, but he did know this snake was white. It didn't seem dangerous, either. Well...not to him while it was going for mosps. Maybe if he crept up behind it, he could try to immobilize it with his wand before it got away? As large as it was, his target seemed pretty hard to miss...

Before her friend could say much it seemed like all hell was really breaking loose. Mosps attacking other students, fire spreading from where Ana had been rolling around. Hadn't James mentioned some Muggle thing about Stopping and Dropping? Ah well... Regardless!

"P-please AJ we need to get out of here!” Lark tugged at her date's sleeve trying to plead with him. This all seemed like it was only going to get worse the longer they stayed. Nerves were starting to get the best of the poor Ravenclaw girl and now with her closest friends left at Hogwarts having made their escape, Lark was feeling more and more uneasy about staying. "There's already-” She was going to continue pleading her case and rushing the boy to turn and escape with her when three larger forms made an entrance. "Professors!” The girl squeaked, groaning as the sharp intake of a breath made smoke start to grasp at her lungs. They really had to get out of here now. Even if the professors were caught up in helping other students she was sure that they would burn the faces of those involved into their adult brains only to deal out quite a bit of detention later on.

"AJ!” A little more panic in her voice now than before as she choked back any further words, Lark tried to grab the boy to one side as one of the Professors rushed by and another began to extinguish the flames by them. Covering her mouth with her arm, backing away as the flames melted away, she peered around the smokey ashen pitch. A prickle of sadness made her feel sick at seeing the Quidditch pitch this way. She had gone to Quidditch with Ruthie to escape the thoughts of the ball... now... similar visions danced in front of her. How could she escape these terrible memories now?? Lark didn't want to leave her friend but as adrenaline surged in her veins, her thoughts clouded back over. Standing there, hands shaking and coughing up a lung... that's when it became all too much.

A large figure of a snake grew from the flames that danced around the pitch. Not too far from in front of her it rose and Lark caught sight of their Transfiguration professor conjuring a magnificent beast... but- It was too much. Hot tears stung the girl's eyes as she rubbed the back of her hands against her cheeks. Too. Much. Letting go of her friend's sleeve, Lark took a few steps back. She was not safe. Not from any of it. How stupid had she been to come to another Hogwarts ball? So stupid. Her golden eyes paled as her hair turned back to the typical silvery tresses. Glancing at AJ more tears streamed from her face. Had she guilted him into coming somehow? This was all her fault... Now he was in danger.. and all of her body and mind screamed at her to run. Bolt. Escape. Get. Out!

"I-I'm sorry..” She murmured, beating herself up as she scolded herself internally. All she had wanted was to spend a fun night with her friends and best friend in particular. Now... everything was ruined. "My broom, we can still get out!” The brooms were just around the corner of the entrance, she could get there and snag it for the two of them to go. Lark would tug at his sleeve again and try to urge her friend to come with her and leave on her broom. If AJ does not come along she will still make an attempt to leave.
