Deep-Rooted Drowsiness

Sylvain settled into the cozy warm chair of the study hall. Other students were gathered around him committing to the same scholarly pursuit of self-enlightenment. It was a joyous chorus to be a part of, the drowsy scholar found the melodic turning of pages almost bewitchingly sleep inducing. His belongings were sprawled out across the table, his head was pressed to his forearm while he slowly lost ground in the fight against losing consciousness.
It had been a busy day. Morning classes, followed by an afternoon of studying with Flash in the library meant Sylvain had spent most of his day catching up in the various subjects he’d fallen behind in. Sylvain had sat down to study just a little bit more, but began daydreaming about his morning with Willow. They were set on plans to dig up earthworms and talk about their feelings together. It was certainly a nice change of pace.
The thought was delightful. Sylvain loved being there for people who needed his sympathetic ear, and when he heard the troubles of another, it always felt as though knowing their story made the other person feel just a little bit better. The wisdom was found in knowing what volume in which he could lend that ear before he was tuckered out. Between all of his new acquaintances and friends and taking up time meant for himself to spend with them, Sylvain had admittedly done a poor job taking care of his self. He’d slept as little as possible, studying well into the night to pass his upcoming finals.
Struggling, Sylvain gurgled as a bit of phlegm dislodged itself from his throat. A few more forced coughs cleared his throat and he pressed his head to his book and began thinking about his recent conversation with Flash about branching out to meet new people, and how until very recently, so few people had been involved in his daily life. Now he had the opportunity to focus on himself, but instead slipped into another daydream about people who neither knew his name, nor cared about his feelings. He lost the fight for consciousness about then.
A loaded day, followed by burning the midnight oil, and a consecutive day of thinking about others had gently smoldered Sylvain into slumbering embers within in the study hall. His warm pink face lie pressed against the table, while sleep marks formed where the individual planks of the table crossed his cheeks and impressed a pattern upon his forehead. The inkwell he’d dug his quill into lie just far enough away that his snoring hadn’t blown the quill over, but gently teased it to rattle.
The page of his book in front of him collected his drool absorbingly. Thankfully the book had belonged to the scholar’s own collection and not the library’s, or he’d have been reprimanded upon its definitely depreciated return. As he lie there dozing, his gasps of air pushed and pulled the parchment page carrying the young wizard’s words back and forth as a single page linger in the path of his snoring breeze. Occasionally he moved and muttered, readjusting position, but the boy stayed asleep.
He was too conked out to hear anyone approach, and if nobody woke him up soon, he risked sleeping in the study hall until one of the elves woke him up and dragged him off to bed.

Santario had taken the time to French braid her hair this morning before donning her school robes knowing full well that she didn’t need her hair dripping into her potion cauldron. Morning classes had been simple enough to get through with thankfully, not a lot of extra homework. After the blossom ball, she already had enough catching up to do after the time she spent in the hospital wing. Most of the damage had been taken care of, but she was told that she might still experience some small headaches and that if they got worse, she should return for further treatment. Taking breaks was highly advised when they started if she could.
After her morning classes, Santario had made her way to the study room, needing to desperately catch up on her work after her time in the hospital wing. She was getting through most of it, but her head was starting to hurt again, and she sighed softly, rubbing her temples. Closing her potions book, rolling up her parchment, and putting away her quill and ink. She pulled the tail of her braid over her shoulder and took out the hair tie. Maybe letting loose her hair would help a little as well. As her slender fingers worked loose the pleats of her braid, a bit of the pressure in her head went away. Running a hand through her hair and leaving it to cascade down her back in waves, she paused. Is someone sleeping?
Some snoring from somewhere behind her caught her attention, and she turned around wondering who it could be. Do people normally sleep in here? She had no clue because she hardly ever used this space to study normally, preferring the outside or her common room. As her sapphire eyes scanned the room, they found the boy a few spots back. She glanced around at their peers around them, and he was being ignored, but it wasn’t really something she could bring herself to ignore. If he was so exhausted that he was falling asleep in his homework, he should probably go take a nap instead. Santario herself certainly wouldn’t want to be left to doze off in a public space.
She carefully packed her things up in her school bag, making sure not to crush her snacks before picking it up and making her way over to the boy's table. Grabbing the unoccupied chair from the spot in front of him, Santario would turn it around as quietly as she could to face his table before setting her bag down and taking a seat. Here it goes. She bit her lower lip before reaching out gently, placing her hand on his shoulder and giving it a gentle shake. “Hey, you should probably wake up.” Her silvery voiced half-whispered trying to help wake him up but also not draw too much attention to the sleeping boy.

The crashing of the river’s waters became ever more cacophonous as they bounded their way down-stream towards Sylvain. He’d fallen asleep and was dreaming about being swept away by a coursing river. The waters were deep, and they pushed him around like confetti in the wind. Cold water shocked his skin as his brain created false sensations for him to experience. Between surfacing the depths long enough for a gasp of air, and grabbing at passing stones, tree branches and detritus, Sylvain felt like a little fish caught in an upheaval of the ocean. A new and sudden feeling of oxygen being rushed to his lungs was not as imaginary an experience as the freezing black water was.
Someone had shaken him awake, and as he slowly came to, he blinked away the sleep boogers that crept their way into his eyeballs. While his vision came into focus, he wiped the slobber from his cheek, and retracted his head from the table gently. As he retracted his head, his forehead stuck to the table with a gross peeling sound as the two had became unstuck after his bought of drowsiness enmeshed them. He trained his sight on the stark contrast of pale skinned girl before him, her raven black hair and sapphire blue eyes holding his still rousing attention. It was clear the boy had woken up, but unclear whether he understood his surroundings. With a simple “Huh,” the "study hall snoozer" stretched his arms out wide and yawned. That nap had done him some good.
Scanning the room quickly, Sylvain noted that some of the students that’d been here when he arrived had already left. That meant it was likely close to curfew, and that he should be packing all of his study materials and belongings up. Although he cared for the well-being of others, it would have been unlikely for him to summon the courage to wake another student up. Something about her gentle and considerate awakening made him feel as though she had actually lifted his spirits. Someone had noticed he needed help and done it without asking, someone was kind to him. His lip corners curled up a little, a smirk forming on his face. He needed to thank the stranger for their kindness in waking him from that terrible nightmare.
Closing his eyes to break up the stressful performance of maintaining eye contact while he spoke, Sylvain gave the girl his best appreciation. “Thank you so much for waking me up.” He opened his eyes for a brief second and caught hers to ensure she heard his thanks. “I thought for certain I was a goner, and that blackened river was going to swallow me up whole! What a nightmare!” He chuckled nervously at his own comfortability with his dream. “M'name's Sylvain, but you can call me Syl if you’re comfortable with nicknames.” He touched his fingers to his forehead, feeling the creases that had been made by the table’s surface. He blushed embarrassed. “By fate, do you mind sharing your name so I could return the kindness?”

As the boy opened his eyes in front of her, Santario would withdraw her hand from his shoulder and observe him as he woke up. He stretched and looked around, seemingly catching his bearings from his study hall nap. She glanced around his notes and what he was working on more out of curiosity than anything. She looked back up at him before he closed his eyes and thanked her. “You’re welcome. Couldn’t just let that river swallow you whole after all.” Santario knew enough about nightmares though hers usually kept her from sleeping a whole lot. Right now, she was quite well-rested, having had a week of forced sleep.
After he introduced himself, she dug into her bag and pulled out a reusable bottle of water. “Water if you’d like. I have not drunk out of this one yet.” She always appreciated having water after she woke up, normally downing an entire bottle in a very unladylike manner after waking up in the middle of the night. She ducked back down into her bag, whether he accepted the water or not suppressing a snort at the use of the word fate. She didn’t want to seem rude, but she also just couldn’t abide by the word fate. Santario pulled out two pumpkin pasties and set one on the table if he wanted one. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Syl. My name is Santario, San, for short, if you wish. No need to repay anything”
She picked up her other water bottle, which was half full, and set it in her lap before taking a bite of the pumpkin pasties she kept for herself. There was no need to rush, close to curfew, maybe, but they still had some time, and since Syl had been sleeping, there was a chance he had missed supper.

Sylvain nodded in thanks, his mouth forming a slight smile. Taking the water bottle from Santario’s possession, he opened the container and began to gulp down the liquid life as fast as he could without it spilling over and out of his mouth. He did his best not to touch his lips to the opening so that his helpfully prepared acquaintance might not get whatever cooties his sleepy snoring had invited. Snoozing had a way of drying out your nose and throat, and Sylvain was very thankful for the incredibly convenient opportunity to rehydrate. “Thank you very much San,” he said respectfully hushed between gulps of water. When he was finished, he safely passed the bottle back to her.
One eyebrow shot up as he eyed the crescent shaped pumpkin treats with trepidation. “What are those?” he said as if interested in their consumption, but unsure as to whether or not he might enjoy them. His finger lingered pointing at them as she answered. He would snatch one up if they were offered, wasting not a single second to try the new delicacy. As he snacked on treats, a thought struck him. He also had planned to keep sweets on hand for occasions just like this. Pulling two cupcakes from the black hole of his never-ending junk satchel, Sylvain put the slightly misshapen confections on the table alongside Santario’s pasties. He wanted to at least offer up something, even if it was a lumpy cupcake. “Either way, I’ll trade you one of these chocolate cupcakes for your treat.”
Sylvain hummed gently as the two did or did not exchange snacks, eating whichever treats pleased both. The cupcake was still soft, and the icing was rich. Chocolate cupcakes always got Sylvain’s brain working again, and soon enough it was beginning to fill with a dozen questions. He decided to ask the one that seemed the least intrusive. Scooting his chair in and doing his best to avoid eye contact, Sylvain spoke up “Hey, thanks for not making me owe you one.” His eyes glanced around the room before settling back on her. “What uh… what kind of hobbies do you like to keep?”

“No problem.” She offered as a reply when he handed the now empty bottle back to her. She would simply tuck it back into her bag and clean it when she returned to her dorm. “Oh, these are Pumpkin Pasties; you can find them on the table during mealtime sometimes. Just a puff pastry dough filled with a spiced pumpkin filling. Kind of like a pumpkin pie but not usually as sweet.” Santario would smile kindly as Syl slid a cupcake her way on the table. While she did not usually prefer to eat overly sweet things, she would graciously accept the cupcake. Maybe a dose of sugar is what she needed to help her head.
“It looks lovely, thank you!” She finished off her pumpkin pasty and took a deep drink of water before grabbing the cupcake he had slid towards her. She noticed that he seemed to hate making eye contact, so she kept her eyes on the food, occasionally looking up at him to observe him. “Really, it’s nothing, don’t worry about it.” Waking him up was not something she felt fell under the category of owing her a favor. It was interesting, however, to know that he seemed to feel like he could have. It was something she would note to remember about the boy in front of her.
Hobbies… That was an easy one to answer just as soon as San swallowed the bite of cupcake she had just taken. “Photography mainly. I usually have my camera with me at events and such.” Truth be told, she usually had her camera with her everywhere, but it was currently sitting on her bed in pieces having been taken apart and maintenanced. “I also enjoy reading and doing personal research. I also enjoy cooking, baking, & gardening. How about you?” She directed the question at him as she took another bite of the cupcake.

"Oh," Sylvain said with a little surprise behind his voice. "Photography has always fascinated me. I'd love to take a look at your perspectives some time, if you're not too busy of course." His hand drifted from scratching the back of his head, down to the table where he began collecting his books and supplies. It was late, and he was really starting to enjoy this conversation, so he wanted to be ready to go at the very last second. Plus the reserved shy-guy wasn't used to people asking him what he was interested in. Usually, Sylvain did all the questioning and sat silently while others talked to him.
"Just packing up!" He said with a grin as he began stuffing the rest of his possessions into his satchel, something that visibly held an exotic menagerie of components. The soggy book would have to dry out in his dorm room. "We actually share a few interests then," he stated as if trying to compare himself to her. "I also enjoy research, especially sidetrack research." He showed her a unicorn diagram he had borrowed from the library. Blushing a bit as his face relaxed, Sylvain confessed to his other hobbies. "I also highly enjoy gardening, and reading." Sylvain neglected to mention his muggle mothers and their fantastic greenhouses, just as they'd neglected to have written to him all year. Sylvain was still sore about it, not that being sore helped him to feel better.
"Cooking though, that's something I haven't really done much of." The snackish scholar definitely loved baked goods, sweets, and juice, but he wasn't one to have ever experimented with combining ingredients to make a meal or dish. Of course, potions was sort of similar to cooking in that a potion-maker followed a recipe to achieve their end results. "Oh, but I love potions class. By far my favorite subject. If cooking is anything like that, then I suppose I have some practical knowledge, but no real experience."
"Asides from that, the occasional fantasy book, or a game of chess is pretty fun. I'm not one to socialize often so, I tend to avoid parties and stuff." He looked back to San, whose smile at the delight of the cupcake sent a wash of relief over him as his anxieties melted like frosting on the roof of his mouth. Making eye contact, Sylvain posed another question to San in hopes of making a deeper connection. "Where'd you learn photography?"

She nodded when he mentioned looking at her work. “Yeah, definitely.” She watched his hands as he gathered his things the fact that he was doing so didn’t bother her any. She used the time to analyze his movements and how he made them. Some people were careful and calculated while others were reckless and destructive, and sometimes you had a combination of the two. It was interesting to see how people handled their things. In reality, it made sense that he would do so anyway as it was late, and they would no doubt have to leave soon anyway. Better to be prepared than caught off guard.
When he mentioned that they shared other researched, she let her eyes settle back on his face again. “Very nice, my nose is usually in Most Ponte Potions.” A book known to hold information about more complex potions and poisons. She listened to him as he spoke about their other shared interests nodding at all the rights parts to prove that she was actively listening to him. He asked about cooking that caught her attention more, but she didn’t interrupt him as he spoke about fantasy books and chess.
“Cooking, in my opinion, is a lot like potions. It’s all about the care you put into prepping your ingredients and how you add them. The recipes are basically the same with how you can only add things at certain times. The only real difference with cooking is that sometimes you remove things before adding other things.” It was clear that she really loved to cook as passion infiltrated her voice. “Give it a shot sometime with an easier recipe like a simple stir-fry. I think you’ll like it.” She smiled as she thought about how long she had been doing photography.
“I’m self-taught for the most part. I started off with a camera that you give away and don’t’ get back when you get the photos developed when I was six. Then my Papa started teaching me how to use his camera. Eventually, he was confident that I could take it out on my own, and I’ve just been experimenting and taking photos ever since. So it’s been six years that I’ve been doing it in total now.” She looked around them as other students started to head back to their dorms. “You’re twice as far from your common room as I am, do you think you’ll make it back in time before curfew?” She was genuinely curious as she only had to run down to the basements, but he had to trek all the way up the west tower.

"Most Ponte Potions," he repeated back to her, noting it on a card for the library elves to retrieve for him later. Sylvain would interrupt her, but only so he might double check the spelling. Curiously, Sylvain watched San with enthusiasm as a shy passion crept into the conversation. Life was easier when you had love for it, and Santario's impassioned advice on cooking was more than enough emotion for the empath to connect with.
"Stir-Fry," he wrote down on the note card beneath potions. It was rare someone listened to Sylvain long enough to determine his interests, and even rarer that the absent-minded wizard listened long enough to find two new curiosities worth exploring on his own. Santario may have been sharing basic information about her hobbies now, but Sylvain was the type who tried things and came back with the results. "I'll have to try it out and let you know how I did."
It was quite impressive that the young raven-haired woman with startlingly azure eyes had been photographing for half of her life already, but it was twice as impressive to hear that her wits and cleverness handled the majority of her education. Sylvain smiled, letting his eyes do the work while he gave her a quiet and respectful clap. Those traits were something Sylvain valued about himself, and respected in others. Both kept people moving forward and thinking about the future. Speaking of which.... wasn't it getting late?
"Merlin's beard!" The scrawny boy exclaimed as he grew visibly anguished with the thought of dashing up all the steps to Ravenclaw Tower. Optimistically, he recovered when coming to the realization that because she'd woken him up , he just barely had a fighting chance to make it back to his roosting place without punishment. To Syl, it was just as well that he'd spent the majority of that advantage learning about her instead of saving his own skin. Even the small amount of polite friendliness that she had shown tonight made her company far more enjoyable than the company many of his fellow students kept. It was no small thing that her interests were ideas the curious lad intended to explore for himself. Sylvain turned and ran for the study hall door.“You’re twice as far from your common room as I am, do you think you’ll make it back in time before curfew?”
As he reached the frame of the door, Syl swiveled back around as he often had to. Forgetfully, Sylvain was checking to make sure he had everything he needed and that nothing was being left behind. Even now, after kindness and sincerity, Syl had a hard time matching the gaze of the guardian angel who roused him from his forsaken slumber, but he did eventually muster the bravery to do so. His soft eyes were trained on hers. "Thank you." Syl said softly. A grin, hopefully conveying the genuine emotion behind his thanks, spread across his face. "There's no chance I won't have to run, but thanks to you I can hope that I will make it."
With that Syl fled, and began to fly towards the stairs with all of his strength. Legs lifting his knees as high as they could while his chest burned. He was glad to have just learned the riddle to the roost it was his chance to dodge the prefects.
"Brighter than light, I also hold back the darkness." The answer to the riddle was Hope.

Santario’s eyebrows went up when he made his exclamation about Merlin’s facial hair, and she made an almost quiet amused chortle. As Syl got up and started to walk away, she would collect her cupcake wrapper and gently fold it so it wouldn’t drop crumbs everywhere. As he began to bolt for the door, she slowly stood up and adjusted her bag on her shoulder while leisurely making her way to the bin, dropping the wrapper in it, and then making her way towards the door where he had stopped to thank her.
She gave him a slight not of her head before waving him off. “Don’t mention it. Just fly.” As the boy took off, she strolled to the room entrance and passed its barrier, making her way towards the front of the school to take the marble staircase down. Descending was always easier than ascending as you didn’t have to fight gravity on your way down. Her shoes on the stairs echoed off the walls as she took her patient one step at a time. Making her way into the dungeons was always an interesting concept, but today the air felt heavier as she did, and her head started to pound. She finally found herself standing in front of the blank stone wall, and with an utterance of the password, she was shown the way into her common room as she cradled the right side of her head in her hand. Making her way to her dorm speedily as the pain in her head made her dizzy, and she needed to sleep.
