The weather was really nice today, and it was rubbing off on Aaron. The entire month of May had passed in a blur, and he hadn't felt like himself in a while - since the ball, to be exact - but here he was, walking with a bit of pep in his step towards the Great Lake. The nice temperature had been calling to him, and it was making him feel a better already.

The twelve-year-old took a seat on a small ridge slightly above the lake, where he could dangle his feet about the still waters. This was a place he came to often, even before he had become all mopey. The outdoors were his happy place, always and forever. Since coming to Hogwarts, the Great Lake specifically was his spot. He would practice his Taekwondo here and come here to eat breakfast with Lydia sometimes. He was waiting for when it would be warm enough to maybe go swimming. He heard the lake was terribly cold, but his uncle said swimming in cold temperatures was actually a good workout. He had to keep up his body even more now that he'd made it off the waitlist and was second-string chaser. It meant he'd be sitting on the bench most games, but it was better than being up in the stands and watching the action from a distance.

His entire mindset these days was staying out of trouble and practicing to be the best Quidditch player he could possibly be. It's the only thing that really brought him joy these days, considering he was avoiding most of his friends and acquaintances these days.

The hooting of an owl drew Aaron out of his thoughts. He looked up in time to see a letter dropping through the air towards him. The grey screech owl that had dropped it was already on its way back to the castle. Who would be writing to him right now? It couldn't be his family since they didn't own an owl, and it's not like anyone else had ever written to him before. The boy snatched the letter out of the air with a practiced movement, much like how he had grabbed the Quaffle back during the practice match in April.

As he held it in his hands, Aaron saw that it was indeed addressed to him. He opened the envelope, increasingly curious about the sender and the contents.

"Wha-" Aaron's jaw dropped as he read. No way. No way, no way, no way. How could something like this happen? He raised his eyes to look around for signs of life - anyone to share the news with. Someone to prove to him that what he was reading was real. Because, there's no way it could be-

As he looked around, his eyes landed on a girl in the distance. He jumped to his feet and began to run, not caring if he looked like a crazy mad man. When he got close enough, he recognized the girl as Maria, a friend of his. This brought a huge smile to his face as he continued to run towards her. "Maria! Maria!" he called, finally arriving and shoving the piece of parchment in front of her. "Please tell me what this says- I just- I think my eyes are playing tricks on me," he said, unable to contain the excitement in his voice. Just the prospect of the letter being real was blowing his mind.

If he was reading it right, he had just been accepted as Co-Captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team. He had put his name in the hat on a whim, completely not expecting to get it. But if this was true, his whole Hogwarts life was about to change for the better.

Another good day found Maria by the Lake, this time with her messenger bag and journal, ready to make notes about the Giant Squid for her “experiment”. Well, it wasn’t much of an experiment as it was her observing her favorite animal on the grounds. It seemed like a creature with personality, and didn’t seem dangerous at all. The cephalopod was a common sight when she was by the Lake, and today she thought she would sit a little closer to where it was, and just look at it do its thing. She wasn’t able to take note of much today, but she didn’t mind, because progress was progress, and who knows, if she kept this up, maybe in the warmer months she could eventually interact with it?

On her way back to the castle, she approached a ridge that overlooked the area and saw an owl fly over head, dropping something to a figure not too far from her. It looked like a grey screech owl, but she wasn’t too sure. She briefly thought about sending her mom an owl, maybe before she went home? She hadn’t heard from her parents in a while, but they were probably busy.

She saw the figure stand up and it seemed to notice her as well, as it started running at her. It was… Aaron? Well, he’s in a good mood or good considering he’d been moping all month since the ball. Truth be told she was worried about the boy, possibly a little more than how a friend would worry, but she was sure it was nothing (or was it?). But it seemed that he was in higher spirits today. Coming up to her, the boy shoved a parchment in her hands, asking her to read it.

“Oh- Hello to you too.” She laughed, opening the letter to fulfill his request.

“Well, it says…Dear Mr. Jones”Her eyes skimmed the page, speed reading through most of the letter.

”…You have formally been accepted as the Co-Captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team! Wow that’s great, Aaron, congratulations!” She cheered for the boy. He deserved this after all the things he’d been through, and she definitely happy for him.

Aaron was practically bouncing on the heels of his feet as he waited for Maria to read the letter. His impatience was insane, given the possible contents of the letter. As soon as she confirmed it, though, he jumped in the air and fist pumped comically.

"Yes!" Without further ado, Aaron practically tackled the girl. He was so happy, that he couldn't help but hug her tightly. He had not been much of a hugger before coming to Hogwarts and landing in Hufflepuff. With friends like Lydia and Willow, he had become (maybe too much?) accustomed to hugging his female friends. Especially in moments like this.

This was the most exciting thing to happen to him in - pretty much ever! Unless you counted winning that Taekwondo competition... but even then, he hadn't felt this much joy! Quidditch Co-Captain! As a first year!

As he pulled away from the hug, Aaron kept his hands on her shoulders and looked Maria in the eye with his huge smile, "This is the best news ever! I'm so excited I could- well-" He released her and turned, running ahead through the grass a bit so he could do a front flip. As he successfully landed it, he turned to look out at the lake and cupped his hands around his mouth. He didn't care who heard as he shouted, "I DID IT!"

After a moment of just heavy breathing and looking out over the still waters, he turned on his heel back to Maria. He walked over to her, looking a bit chagrined. "Sorry," Aaron said, laughing slightly. He was grinning from ear to ear as he continued, "I just had to get that all out of my system."

If earlier Maria wasn’t sure about her feelings she was definitely a little more sure now. After a fist pump into the air that was almost cartoon-y, her excited friend tackle-hugged her. The Asian boy being taller and stronger than her, almost toppled them both over onto the ground. But luck seemed to be on her side today, and instead of embarrassingly falling, she was wrapped in a tight bear hug. While affection wasn’t entirely new for the bagder girl, Aaron’s hug felt a little more different than ones she’d receive from her friends or parents. Or maybe it was just her? Regardless, this made the girl blush to her ears and gave her this weird fluttery feeling in her stomach. This was...new and...odd. But her Aaron was definitely happy, and that was the more important thing at the moment. He took his Quidditch very seriously, so this must have be a big deal for him.

She could feel the joy practically radiating off of him when their eyes met, and her faint blush was still evident on her cheeks. Her own grin was as wide as his, and she laughed when he practically bounded around in the field before doing a flip, and shouted out into the open. To her he looked like the kids customers would bring to the diner high on sugar, but he was her friend, so she wasn’t annoyed in the slightest.

After he finished zooming around like the golden snitch, the now co-captain ran back up to her and apologized.

“No, don’t be sorry, this is the moment you’ve been waiting for! I’m really happy for you.” She smiled, mimicking his ear to ear grin.

“Aand, it’s just in time for the Durmstang match.” Maria exclaimed, pointing out something else would no doubt excite her friend all over again.

“Just think about it, you and your other co-captain leading the Hufflepuff team to victory!”

"Thank you," Aaron said, beaming at his friend. She seemed a bit flushed, but maybe that was just because she was excited for him. As Maria mentioned the match against Durmstrang, the twelve-year-old boy nearly keeled over. Durmstrang! Of course! How could the Hufflepuff vs Durmstrang match slip his mind? That was a lot of pressure, but- all Aaron felt was excitement.

"Yeah, Quinn Healy is our Captain since Saskia stepped down. He's the super tall beater," he explained, unsure of how familiar Maria was with their Quidditch team. Not everyone was as passionate about the sport as he was. "Technically I'm more of an under-captain and he's the main captain, so my role's going to be to support him with the team strategies and stuff, but-" Aaron paused as he considered how to explain the rest.

"I mean, I'm still only a second-string player - which means I'll be on the bench during the game unless someone gets knocked out - so yeah, I think I'll be focused on strategy and researching the other team's tactics," Aaron said with a nod, almost as if he was telling himself these words as well. Quidditch co-captain. Wow. What a turn of events. Things were really starting to look up! And that meant he needed to be even more on his game. Focus on researching Quidditch plays and finding ways to defeat the other school. A lot was resting on this! The Hufflepuff team had led an undefeated season, and he couldn't let it end on his first official game.

Absent-mindedly, Aaron pushed his bangs out of his face. His hair was getting a little long and he needed a haircut. Another smile found its way on his face as he turned back to Maria, "You'll be in the stands cheering us on, right? It's funny, I haven't really asked if you're a big Quidditch fan or not.."

Thankfully, the excited boy didn’t comment on her flushed appearance, or maybe he just didn’t notice? Either way, Maria was relieved that Aaron was oblivious. She had no way to explain to him this was happening as she barely understood it herself. In fact, it made her space out, so she was now only caught some of what he was talking about. But she did hear something about Quinn Healy and Quidditch things. Why was he talking about Quinn? Oh, he must be the other co-captain. Focus, Dee, focus. Truth be told, she couldn’t because of the flurry of new emotion, but she had to say something, lest he question her spacing out. She directed her thoughts back to their conversation. Quidditch, yes, that’s what they were talking about, or more specifically, his co-captain.

She actually hadn’t met the boy, but she’d definitely seem him in matches. “Oh, the red-head? Yeah, I mean, it’s pretty hard to miss an eight foot half-giant.” She joked.

“But he’s good, and I-I think you’re a pretty good player too.” The girl shyly complimented. Aaron continued to talk about his place on the team, which this time, she was able to listen to. Right, he wasn’t always playing because he was second string. She’d have to take note of that so she didn’t accidentally say, “Yeah! You were great in the last game.” By default. Quidditch was exciting and maybe she would want to try it someday, but for now it seemed like a distant possibility.

Maria noticed the way he pushed his hair out of his face and tucked some of her own hair behind her ear, looking down sheepishly at his question. “I- um yeah, I’ll be there. I-I mean we’re all going so everyone will probably be there.” Noticing she was starting to ramble, she tried to save herself from embarrassment. “Uhh I’m not too familiar with anything other than the basics, but Quidditch is always fun to watch.”

Aaron laughed with Maria when she spoke about the "eight-foot half giant." Yeah, Quinn was kinda intimidating, but from the limited interaction Aaron had with him, he seemed pretty nice. He was a Hufflepuff after all. And Aaron would need to get used to interacting with him - maybe even become friends - considering how closely they would be working together. Especially with the upcoming match against Durmstrang.

At Maria's compliment, Aaron's dark eyes turned to look at her properly again. Had she seen him play in the unofficial match? Or did she assume he was a good player because of how much he raved about it? Either way, the compliment kept a smile on his face. "Thanks, Maria," he said, sincerity in his voice. He always appreciated a supportive friend.

"Well, the match is at the London Stadium, so I think some people are actually headed home rather than going," Aaron explained kindly, tilting his head. "But I'm super happy to hear that you're coming!" he quickly added with a grin.

It was then that Aaron noticed Maria had a journal and bag with her. She had told him before about her hobby of writing, but he'd never really asked what she wrote about. Having taken the letter back and carefully put it into his back pocket, Aaron now gestured to her journal. "Writing anything fun?" he asked, raising his eyes back to hers.

Just when she thought the blush was gone, it came back with a vengeance. All it took was Aaron saying that he would be happy to see her at his match. Wait, what she thinking? Of course he’d be happy to see her there, they were friends. Psshhh. friends are happy when they see you support them.

Right?

Suddenly, it was as if Maria had never had friends before and she was now reevaluating what classified as “friend” behavior and “more than friend” behavior. After all, she wouldn’t want him to think know that she liked him more than a friend.

Right?

Once again stuck in her turbulent inner monologue, she didn’t notice Aaron put away his letter and nearly missed his question about her journal.

“Snap out of it, Dee.” She internally scolded herself.

“Uh, yeah! Well, I mean if you consider my squid notes fun.” Nervous laughter came from the Hufflepuff girl before she managed to once again calm herself down and talk like a normal human being. “I mean, other than that they’re mostly journal entries, you know, to get my thoughts out. Well that, and some DADA notes you know hags are pretty interesting -“ Before she could go on a tangent about the magical beings, she quickly cut herself off. While, she was at least a little more relaxed now, she was sure Aaron would rather not listen to her drone on about school worl.

“How about you? What have you been up to lately? I mean, aside from your amazing Quidditch…related… things.” Smooth Dee, smooth.

Squid notes? he wondered, his head tilting again. Then he recalled the Giant Squid that lived in the Great Lake. Right. She must be researching it! That sounded kinda cool, and he looked out across the lake for a glimpse of the creature. The waters were still, unfortunately, but he wouldn't have minded sitting with Maria to look out for it.

Aaron turned back to his friend as she continued explaining her journal. Hags? He remembered that Pericles had warned them about hags in relation to the ball. For some reason, he thought that they might attack the students that night. Unfortunately for all of them, it had been mosps that descended on them all.

Aaron realized he was frowning slightly, but he quickly put a smile back on his face. Now was not the time to dwell on thoughts of the ball. This was a time to celebrate! Quidditch Co-Captain meant he had to get himself together and refocus himself. He had so many people he needed to tell-

"Honestly, Quidditch is pretty much my only thing these days..." he admitted, slightly chagrined. Since the ball, he'd been pretty boring as far as extracurriculars. "And schoolwork, I guess... I've been tryna stay outta trouble, and I'm trying not to rely on Lydia so much with homework and stuff-" he explained to his fellow Hufflepuff. Still bouncing on the heels of his feet, unable to stay still, he continued, "Speaking of, I've really gotta go tell her the great news! I'll let you get back to watching for the squid, but let's hang out soon!" With those words, he dashed off across the grounds and back towards the castle.

A few moments after running off, though, he turned to look back at Maria and waved grandly, "Thanks again!" His shout carried back to her, and with those last words, he turned away and was gone.

Maria had to admit, sometimes her conversational skills weren’t the best. She’d blurt out random things and ramble on about whatever came to mind. Take now for example, as she nervously observed Aaron’s expression. He was frowning like he remembered something. Did she say something wrong? Had she offended him?

His somber expression didn’t last long, though. It seemed like nothing could damper the Yoohoo-loving boy’s current mood. His expression changed from almost sad to his previous upbeat demeanor. His companion’s smile mimicked his own as she listened to his post-ball activities.

“That actually sounds pretty nice.” She said when he mentioned Quidditch and school work. Then he mentioned Lydia. Right, his best friend. Was she also his girlfriend? She knew that the two spent a lot of time together, but she wasn’t one to assume. That didn’t mean that she wasn’t kind of uncomfortable when he mentioned her. But that didn’t stop her from smiling at Aaron’s enthusiasm to tell everyone about his great news.

She waved goodbye and returned a “You’re welcome!” to his thank you. Soon his retreating form was far from ear shot and she was able to let out the breath she was holding. Why was she so nervous? It was only Aaron, and she’d talked to Aaron plenty of times before. Did anything change? At the time, Maria wasn’t so sure what it was, or what her feelings were, but if there was one thing she was sure of, it was that she didn’t mind them at all.

With one last look at her surroundings, her lips cracked into a small smile, and began to make her way back to the castle.
