Kaamos:

The polar night; period of darkness north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle when the sun does not rise over the horizon.
PV to @Marla Quinlan (Elias Oja)
Roleplaying as Durmstrang iNPC Sasha Teräväinen
The summer was coming to a close, and Sasha was letting the breeze run through his hair one last time as he stared off into the distance at Porvoonjoki. Porvoonjoki, at its best, was muddy and dull. The skies in Porvoo were grey, clouded, and dreary, as they always were. But with these typical days came a cool air that flowed through the town, one that Sasha would revel in for as long as he could. His days back home were numbered, and this was the only day out of the summer that he had taken away from the rink or his workout process. Alas, even his gear was inside, as he knew he had no intentions of playing today. Today was his day to think. To reflect.

With each summer came more signs that he was getting older. His pants needed replacing, his skates were worn out, his broom needed maintenance, his hair needed cut. Not that Sasha usually minded throughout the year, because he wasn't really one to think too deeply on these things, save for this one day over the summer.

Though Sasha didn't get to see much of Kaamos, as it only happened over Christmas break, the word was also used to describe a feeling of depression, or otherwise a longing for sunshine. Sasha had never reckoned that he had felt this feeling before, because he had always been a happy-go-lucky type of boy. His life revolved around playing, around making others happy. Everything he did was good-natured and light-hearted, and so he reserved this one day for feelings other than that.

Right now, what he needed was his friend. Illya hadn't followed him home this summer, as he hadn't him. Something was different this summer. Sasha didn't know where he was going or what he was doing. He wasn't ever really a planner, but he always seemed to have an idea in mind. And Sasha didn't like being caught off guard. Not too often, anyway. A surprise here and there was fine, typically, but not when confusion was what followed it. For the first time in his life, Sasha felt uncertain. It was very unlike the free-spirited boy, the one who didn't seem to understand consequences and lived life to its fullest. The one who seemed to love all and take none for granted. Sasha had no fears, no enemies, no attachments. He could do anything whenever he wanted. Sasha was on top of the world.

But for now, the only thing he was on top of was his rooftop, wishing it was kaamos. He was wishing for something- a savior, maybe. Not some sort of higher being, but something miraculous and life changing to happen. For far too long, things were staying the same, and that was so unfitting for how Sasha was changing. He began to wonder if he'd ever amount to anything. If school would last forever, if he'd always feel this freedom. If he could stay young for the rest of his life. He wanted to, anyway.

It was peculiar that Sasha should contemplate such a thing, because he was always waiting on the edge of his seat to become the next big Quidditch star. To petition for Filand to have a national team or at least be let into the Nordics. He was waiting for his life to begin and yet he didn't want it to at all.

chill babe. we're all bad in someone's story.

"Where are you?"

Elias peered into the black abyss that was the night sky of Finland, waiting for an answer. Sasha wasn't one to enjoy talking about his feelings, as far as he knew– and by the look on his face, it seemed that he was feeling a lot. Also... Why the hell were they on the roof, again? It was a pretty view, but it was cold as hell up there. Then again, with Sasha acting so weird and not really wanting to be cast out of the only place that felt like home right now, he didn't ask questions. The boy sat down next to his friend, beginning to swing his legs back and forth with the wind doing the rest of the work for him. There was something serene, quiet about Sasha's house. Everything seemed to be muted, in all the right ways. It was safe to say that Elias practically lived here. Which is why he knew that something was off. The glint in his company's eyes was more than a little concerning. "I know something's wrong. You can give up the quiet act, already," He jabbed Sasha lightly, hoping that he'd at least look in Elias' direction.

This wasn't like him.

However, Elias knew better than to keep pushing. It would just annoy Sasha to no end, and make him want to jump off the roof, or whatever a sad hormonal teenager did when they were emotional. He glanced downwards at the lake where he used to play hockey on in the winters when it was frozen over with his sisters. Of course, that was all before he was spending those winters in Durmstrang, where hockey sticks became brooms. Pucks became quaffles. Both sports were fun in their own ways, but Elias hadn't played hockey in forever. He must be awful at it by now. He stifled a laugh thinking about Aliina poking fun at him for his awful skills on the ice. She would kick his ass at it now. Well– she did back in the day, too. And no, it did not make it less embarrassing that she was three years younger than him.

And while going back to school meant that he wouldn't be able to see Aliina or Riia for almost a year, he'd at least be able to play pretend again. Like everything was okay. Like he was looking forward to going home and seeing his parents. But it never really took his underlying thoughts away. Especially tonight. He just had to be nosy and look in his parents' room. What was he expecting? A medal? Well, no. But it sure as hell wasn't divorce papers. He knew that his family wasn't happy, but he thought that they'd fix things. So was it all over? The holidays filled with laughter and mischief, breakfasts where the whole family fought for the last sandwich, or where his mom made all the kids water her plants all around the house... It was all gone.

Elias began scratching at the nail polish on his index finger, lazing in the silence between him and Sasha. It was present, but not awkward. And looking up at the (very few) stars and (very many) clouds, he felt small. Almost like the mini version of a candy bar, the ones that you get on Halloween. Then again, he'd never gone trick or treating. Halloween in Finland was just... Kind of an excuse to dress up and have a party with friends. But if he was so insignificant, then what was the point of trying? In the long run, his feelings didn't matter. There're 8 billion people on Earth, and he's whining about his parents getting divorced. People are starving in other countries, dying, hell, in the muggle world right now there's a pandemic, and he's worried about his. It felt so dumb. And yet, he couldn't help but pity himself.

"your loss, baby !!"
