Chapter 1

All Layal wanted was an hour of uninterrupted reading time. Is that really too much to ask?

Ever since she had discovered the magnificent Hogwarts library, Layal had spent all her afternoons exactly the same: homework, choosing a book from the library if she was finished with the previous one, and—only recently—going to read under the tree facing the lake instead of staying cooped up inside.

Today, however, the book she wanted to read next wasn't in its usual spot. It was imprisoned in the clutches of another human. A Gryffindor boy, a first-year from the looks of him, was reading the synopsis, eyes flicking back and forth across the back cover.

No, no, no. No. Absolutely not. This was the next book on her TBR, and one does not, under any circumstances, deviate from their TBR.

Deep breaths. It's going to be fine. There's probably another copy anyway, right? What kind of library would have only one copy of a decent story, after all?

Over, under, behind, left, right—anywhere and everywhere she looked, there was nothing. That was the only copy on the shelves.

Exhaling a long breath, she pulled her cap low and leaned against the shelf, crossing her arms. Facing the boy, she said, "You've been staring at the back cover for two minutes. Unless you're planning to memorize the blurb, I'll be taking that off your hands, thank you very much."
