A kind smile danced on Devon’s lips at Basil’s responses. It was cute, in her opinion … not that she would express that out loud. While to some degree, she figured that it wasn’t something to be ashamed of. Yet, she also didn’t want to put her foot in her mouth by saying something potentially inappropriate. It was best for her to keep the thought to herself … at least for now. They were young, after all. Very young.

A giggle escaped her lips as Basil hugged her. Devon gently squeezed him back. She laughed kindly at his embarrassment. “Hey, you never have to be embarrassed for hugging me. Trust me, I like hugs,” she winked and laughed again. That wasn’t a completely true statement. When her brothers hugged her, she wanted to escape them as soon as possible. When her sister hugged her, she tolerated it more, but she was still antsy about it. Yet, for her first relationship … she didn’t want to be picky with what she liked. Besides, the hug was nice.

As they slowly trekked back to the common room, Devon smiled as she felt his hand in hers. Deciding to stay silent for now, she squeezed his hand. An acknowledgement and encouragement. She was enjoying the handholding.

The Quietest People

Basil felt comfortable as they were walking. He was glad that he hadn't made Devon uncomfortable by hugging her. Basil didn't mind the silence as they walked back. It wasn't awkward- on the contrary it was peaceful. There were not too many other people out and about which was nice. Basil felt every sensor in his hand tingle when Devon squeezed it. Like a bolt of energy. He still hadn't quite gotten used to the fact that someone-Devon- wanted to hold his hand. He was suddenly taken aback at how pretty Devon looked. She wasn't doing anything different and was just in her simple uniform with a slightly windblown ponytail from flying. But wow does it look good on her. How did I ever get so lucky?. Basil wondered. He suddenly noticed he was staring at Devon, blushed, and looked away.
"So what subject were you thinking?". Basil asked. He knew that he should probably work on runes. He just didn't understand it all the time. Or most of the time. Also I should probably review my Herbology notes. He thought. It was ironic, given that his parents were professional herbologists and definitely got all O's in herbology as students. He attempted to smooth his hair to no avail. Unfortunately his hair didn't look quite so effortlessly pretty unlike Devon's. It looked more like some sort of rat's nest- especially after he just raced on his broom.

The young Horned Serpent fell silent as they both continued to walk. As much as she loved to talk, she was also very sensitive to being awkward. While she was a young girl and was already pretty awkward, she didn’t want to make it worse. Besides, she rather enjoyed the quiet like this. It was a chance for her to process her thoughts and enjoy the change of environment as they headed to the common room. Plus, it also gave her time to decide what to say next. That could always spell trouble, especially when trying to talk to someone that she liked, like Basil.

Devon glanced at Basil and smiled as she noticed him staring at her. She had no plan to call him out on it, unless it was during something dangerous. Like a broom racing match. Or in a dangerous class, like Potions. Those would be problematic to have a moment of staring. Right now, walking, it wasn’t that big of a deal. Plus, they were together, so any danger was pretty much mitigated. Besides, it wasn’t like she minded being stared at, if she were to be honest. Between playing violin and dancing, she had plenty of experience with being watched. And, let’s face it, she also heard plenty of comments about her pretty appearance. So, it wasn’t a jarring experience for her anymore.

At Basil’s proposed question, Devon bit her lip and furrowed her brow, trying to process what schoolwork she needed to prioritize. Or try to prioritize. As much as she loved magic, Devon needed to do a better job at keeping her focus on her work … and in this case, an initial decision. “I’m thinking … Charms,” she chose with a nod, her ponytail bounced from the movement. “What about you?” she asked.
