OOC NOTES
Coded by Melissa Blake
One job. We had only one job and somehow, we found a way to screw it up.

Ellaine had to lay a trap, and what did she do? Anything but laying that dam trap. I had to look for a flag, and what did I do?

Get stuck in a dam downpour. Because we didn't have enough drawbacks. And, for some reason, no matter how many prayers I sent to the Saints, they still gave me the worse of the lucks.

No, sorry. If they decided that, for this round, I'd have to find a way to get out of here, they had their own reasons to. Yes, they probably wanted to test me (because obviously, my whole life has not been test enough) and see what I was capable of. Alright, got it.

Can I go now?

I groaned, crawling under the rain and mud, trying to get out of there.

"I swear to all the Saints, if we don't get out of here as the winner side, I'm coming back for each one of you in your sleep!"

I yelled to anyone close to me who could hear me. A bit radical, I know, but a strong motivation to the group if you ask me.

Did Sage have any idea what was going on? Nope. Chaos grew across the jungle as they frantically stormed through the zones. At least she'd escaped the downpour. Sage was competitive; that wasn't exactly a secret. She shielded her eyes with one hand, squinting into the distance for some sense that the game would soon end in victory.

Nothing good seemed to appear on the horizon. She sighed and pushed herself forward. Where the hell did they put this flag?

The relentless rain only added to the mess she called her hair. Sage was drenched to the bone, but at least it cooled her against the humidity. As she looked around, the field was quickly transforming into a muddy comedy of errors.

Sage was pretty far from her original zone, but now she was surrounded by the fact the other opponents weren't that far away. She studied their limited movements alongside her own team's struggling pace. They seemed to be completely frozen by the storm.

The mud squished under the weight of Sage's steps, threatening to suck her prosthetic below the surface. The elements, no matter how much Sage loved nature, weren't her favorite part of sports. She gritted her teeth, adjusting her balance to bring her team out of the slump.

xxxSkylar squints as it rains hard, her hair and clothing clinging onto her like a very uncomfortable second skin. Her shoes make awful squelching sounds as she attempts to walk through the thick mud, occasionally losing her balance here and there. To her side, Paul seems to be suffering the same fate as well, his eyes blinking rapidly as he tries to get the water out of his eyes.

"Sure reminds you of that time by the lake, does it not?" Skylar jokes, remembering when their trio decided to take a dive into the Great Lake on the last day of school. Well, it was more like Skylar pushing Paul into the lake and getting dragged down with him, but the result was the same. Poor Ellaine. Their Hufflepuff friend had to endure their antics and ended up wet as well.

"At least you cannot blame me for this one. Right Ellaine?" Skylar's attempt at a banter seems to be successful as Paul cracks a smile. However, she received no response from El. The blue-haired girl shrugs, assuming that she went to go set the trap they had planned. Lachlan, Damien, and Percy also seemed to follow the strategy, the three moving on to the next zone. Paul also went ahead and searched for any traps in the zone, the boy later coming back and saying he didn't find any. Artie, however, seems to be rooted in place and unable to move. But before Skylar could express her concern, a familiar voice calls out in the distance.

"I swear to all the Saints, if we don't get out of here as the winner side, I'm coming back for each one of you in your sleep!"

Skylar swivels to find Mika stuck in the mud, trying to crawl her way out. In the distance, she also finds Ellaine setting the trap. However, the trap backfired. The Gryffindor winces as she watches her friend suffers from the consequences. Panic slowly creeps in as she watches the chaos around her, three of her teammates either immobilized or injured, and the other three doing Merlin knows what in the other zone.

Then she heard a noise. From the looks of it, Paul heard it as well. The two made their way towards the sound, an unsettling feeling weighing down on Skylar. She had a suspicion on what that noise could be, and her guess was confirmed as she sees three students she does not recognize. The other team has arrived.

Next to her, Paul draws his wand with a mischievous smile. Skylar cannot help but admire his confidence and glee in a situation like this. Shooting him a grin to match, the girl readies herself as well.

"Well, well. Looks like we have some froggies that came to visit."

Cold, breathlessness. Almost blacked out. But at the last moment, the giant snake seemed to have lost any interest in Rosaline and Fred, dropping them on the ground and leaving for all. Unbalanced, she propped her hand on the dirt and tried to sit up. Black dots dancing in her vision due to the squeezing of the snake. Breathe in. Breathe out. Her lungs were filled with air again. Oxygen and water were the two components of life, and she had desperately needed the former one just a minute ago. Luckily, they survived. She managed to stand up and keep her pace.

Yet another challenge she had to face was coming to everyone in the rainforest. The sun shone through the leaves, filtering onto the ground. As the game went on, the temperature was heated too. Rosaline, as a London girl, hadn’t faced a serious heatwave. Even though she had dressed simple enough, the hot, warm, humid weather still got to her. She felt her heartbeat was racing, her face flushing, brain buzzing with notions of getting to a cooler place and out of the forest. The dizziness came. Though she could still keep up with her teammates, she would need to rest and a really nice, cold shower.

There was so much chaos, one thing after another. Rosaline and Fred had been freed thankfully and they were able to not run into any other creatures that might have been lurking, for now anyways. As some of the other team members went ahead to the next zone, Leo stayed with his friends as they came up the back. Even though it had already felt hot and humid since they came out here, suddenly it felt like the sun had gotten even hotter. Leo decided to stay in the shade, trying to keep cool even though he was feeling sticky and sweaty. Everyone seemed to be feeling the heat but some were taking it worse than others. Erast and Fred were talking and he noticed Erast go over to the water to splash some on his face. If he hadn’t been attempting to be nicer to him he might’ve just gone over and quickly pushed him into the water. But alas.. he knew that would’ve been no help for the team so he just stood and snickered quietly as he saw some stuff stuck to his face. Of course, he decided to pretend like he didn’t notice instead of actually letting the Hufflepuff boy know.
Instead Leo continued to look around, trying his best to be diligent in this game, when he noticed Rosaline was also not taking well to this sudden heatwave that had washed over them. Leo grabbed a large leaf and went over to her to try to fan her and help her cool off some. “This probably isn’t helping but I figured I’d try.” He laughed softly as the sun continued to beat down on them harshly.

Simply stacking some sticks seemed like a reasonable method for constructing a trap. Unfortunately, Cecilia had never been talented when it came to assembling things. The pathetic structure wobbled until it collapsed into an inconvenient pile of debris.

Well that sucked.

She heaved out a deep sigh and leaned back until she layed on the ground, paying no mind to the leaves tangling in her auburn braids. Perhaps she would get lucky and someone would trip over the sticks. Although she struggled to imagine anyone could be that fragile.

That was when she promptly sat up and her gaze drifted towards Erast. All of a sudden, the notion did not seem so absurd. Once again she bore witness to her dear friend battling the elements — and losing. The poor boy would likely melt before anyone found the flag.

“You’ve got to dunk your whole head in!” She shouted over to him.

It wasn’t terrible advice, but she was fairly certain he’d rather faint from the heat than try that. The thought was concerning yet simultaneously amusing. The sight of algae cling to his chin only made it even more so.

“I didn’t know you were so serious about skincare,” she quipped.

Cecilia barely managed to stifle her laughter as a slight grin tugged at the corner of her lips. Despite her efforts to convince herself that it was truly not that funny, she couldn’t help but laugh.

AT CASTELOBRUXO WITH @Valour Argentum AND TEAMMATES
JUNE TWENTY-SIXTH, 2026
The jungle had a strange way of distorting things. Not only the wilderness surrounding them, as was promised if you'd paid enough attention to what the locals said, but apparently his mind as well. A minute ago, Ilias had been tossing a rock at a giant Anaconda’s head to stop it from eating two of his teammates, a surprisingly chivalrous act on his part considering he usually, deliberately, tried to stay away from people. Now, he was somewhere among thick roots and vines, with none of his teammates in sight. He could have sworn he’d seen them just a second ago, Cecilia trying to configure a trap or something, and… Ilias forgot about the rest. Around him, rain had begun to pour, droplets splattering like small bullets on his exposed skin. Except for that, the rain didn’t bother him. The cooling sensation provided a welcome relief from the humidity. He took a deep breath through his nose, exhaling through his mouth, slowly. It would likely get worse once the rain stopped, but for a second, he only thought about the present. Unaware of his current predicament, he stumbled back. When he attempted to take another, a more forceful step forward, he found himself fighting against invisible restraints. Glancing down at his shoes, his shoes were completely swallowed by a thick layer of mud, the edges clinging to the hem of his jeans.

“My fucking luck.” Ilias huffed to himself, blowing an ebony curl out of his face.

Assuming he was alone after losing sight of his team, he glanced up, and immediately balked at the girl still lingering nearby. In a sick, twisted turn of events, Ilias was once again alone with Valour. Valour, who casually carried a knife around. Why was he even surprised at this point? He’d seen the unwavering confidence in her face when she’d pulled it from her pocket, ready to use it against the snake, or perhaps another enemy, if need arose. Part of him had been impressed by the sheer audacity of it. The other part, the significantly more reasonable part, had been wondering why a twelve-year-old was apparently more prepared for jungle combat than most adults. Frankly, he didn’t want to consider what she’d be willing to do. A knife was certainly preferable to a gun, which would hardly have been unheard of for an American back home, but that was a very low bar. If a twelve-year-old carrying a weapon did not qualify as a reason for concern, he did not know what did. For whatever reason—fate—she was still around.

“Do you always carry a knife around? … For snakes?” he asked, tossing her a side-eye from beneath his hair as rain dripped down his face, summoning an ounce of humor despite his wariness.

The knife would not help him out of this position, unless she was planning to cut him out of the mud, which would not be necessary. At least he might get some answers. Briefly, he paused his struggles to listen. Urgent, unintelligible sounds echoed between the trees. The opposite team was closing in on them, surely. Ilias would not be of much use while stuck in the mud, but it seemed that he was not going very much further than this anyway.

“Well, I'm stuck here. Just leave me at this point,” Ilias groaned after yet another futile attempt to pull himself free. For every inch he gained, the other foot sank deeper.

𝖁alour was relieved to find her way, avoiding anacondas and needy teammates. The snake soon appeared to be less demanding than the other students. Fred and Rosa managed to wrestle the beast’s vice-like grip to freedom on their very own and ended up dispersed amongst the foliage as others moved forwards. Valour had revealed one of their cards – their blade – for naught.

For some time, they figured they were alone, carving a path ahead with her knife still in hand. Vines fell like stage curtains as she hacked them out of her way. Rain battered down upon her, her tresses flooding over her shoulders like spilled ink. Slicking back her bangs, tar-like and cumbersome, Valour inspected the way her black vest clung to her like a second-skin, her shorts doing very little to shield her. No matter – she would make do. The onslaught of water reduced much of the jungle to silhouettes and movement; at any moment, a misshapen trunk or a twisting stalk could be an opponent waiting to strike. The blade would certainly get her disqualified, particularly if it clashed with blameless flesh. She drew her wand for good measure – innocent and tactical.

Of course, a familiar ghost refused to stay in her periphery. This, she knew right away, was no misplaced flora, but her typical company. As ever, he wove his way into the foreground, and Valour immediately noticed the way his eyes fixated on the blade in her hand.

“Do you always carry a knife around? … For snakes?”

Her eyebrow tugged upwards in a challenging expression, amused by the suspicion dripping from his voice. That crisp American accent with all its sardonicism had become an entertaining one to catch upon the wind. They pivoted on their heels to size him up.

I've yet to regret carrying one.

For a moment, a strange detail struck her. The boy who usually towered over her, looking down on her with those distrusting glances, seemed to meet her at eye-level. Gaze languidly following down his shirt to his muddied denims, she was met with her explanation – rather pitifully. He was sinking in viscous mud, charming curls matted and clinging to his sorry skull. She approached slowly, studying the bog before paying him much mind, as a small grin tugged at the corners of her lips. Oh dear, now this was all too unfortunate. The indignant huffs and scowls he threw in the witch’s direction bounced off harmlessly, only feeding their appreciation for this situation. Valour tentatively tested the ground as she approached, keeping a wide berth so as not to join her ill-fated friend.

“Well, I'm stuck here. Just leave me at this point,” As if to emphasise his point, he tried to free one leg to lunge forward. The movement only dared the bog to swallow him deeper, earning a quiet chortle from the girl at his side. She weighed up the suggestion with a clinical lack of emotion – a commander assessing necessary collateral damage. On the one hand, he was slowing her down and, by now, she could be making headway on their plight for the Grasshopper’s Flag. On the other hand, selfishly, competent teammates were becoming an increasingly scarce resource. Not one for heroics, but an enjoyer of a conundrum, Valour straightened up and assessed their surroundings.

In one swift movement, she reached for the vines she’d severed moments before. They were sturdy, akin to rope and in abundance here in the rainforest. Ilias was resigned to watch as she looped them over a low-hanging branch and swung the remaining rope to the boy.

This will do. Pull yourself out. I’m not waiting around.

Efficient and rather unfeeling, Valour turned with her chin in the air, a tiny smile dancing on her features. It would be interesting to see how long it takes for him to hoist himself out. She hoped he would return to her side soon.

Don’t die. She waited just long enough to make sure he understood the mechanism. It would be terribly inconvenient.

Note: This is an NPC replacing Lachlan Cassidy in the team Suriname Grasshoppers. This NPC will take his current place while keeping his stats and abilities. (Also just for fun his name is Halaand)
WC: 265
Mentions: @Damien Dragonclaw, @Artie Kempston, @Ellaine Weatherby, @Percy Todd Duplenticy, @Mikaela Hendricks, @Paul Turner
Action: Doing as strategized.
Halaand groans at the sweltering heat as he ventures into zone two, sweat causing his clothes to stick to him like a second skin. His team members Damien and Percy seem to be suffering the same fate as well, the three of them attempting to navigate through the muggy conditions. What made it worse was that the boy was, if he would say so himself, slightly bigger than average. The insulation his muscle provides were wonderful for Norwegian winters, but god awful for the South American weather.

Finally, the trio broke through the trees and reached the zone. The first thing that reached Halaand was the sound of rushing water. A large waterfall crashes into a wide lagoon, a fast-moving river coming from it as well. Wet stones and roots make up the river bank, a heavy fog settling on top. Halaand would do anything to jump into the water, but even he knows that it would be an idiotic move. His mother told him that even if he is not the sharpest tool in the shed, he sure is the sturdiest. It would be a waste of his talent if he were to drown in the mysterious body of water.

Snapping out of his thoughts, Halaand looks around his surroundings and focuses. Their team seems to be doing well now, but he cannot let his guard down. Sending his teammates a good-natured smile, Halaand begins to move forward again. However, he pauses as he notices more people in the distance. Five of them, if he had to count.

This event is part of the Castelobruxo International Capture the Flag event
26TH OF JUNE, 2026 IN THE JUNGLE ARENA
MODERATION — ROUND THREE.
The game took an interesting turn in a matter of seconds, once the two teams crossed paths in both zone two and zone three. To Meiyu's misfortune, zone two which brought another heatwave as persistent as her need for thrill, brought no outcome, all participants passing through unscathed as the match progressed. Her binoculars which had zoomed in on one particular American, noting how he appeared on the verge of passing out, caused her to raise her hand as though she were a referee, calling for medical attention and his pull out of the game, only to be replaced with what Meiyu could describe as a viking, fresh off an exploration boat from the Norwegian coastline. Still, the new participant took to the game rather well.

Two members of the frog team attempted to illegally tackle opposing players, failing miserably in their attempts. A familiar hue of rustic orange hair that hand belonged to @Cecilia Merrick drew her wand at the viking, successfully casting what Meiyu would consider a weak spell against the boy — his feet moving away as though possessed with a mind of their own. Somehow, the viking descendant, who she learned to be named Haaland, took such offence to the offensive action that he tackled into @Erast Yan with such brute that the Hufflepuff Prefect was too distracted by the attack to complete his own action for this round.

A smile plastering her expression as Meiyu watched through the binoculars, "Serves you right." She mumbled to herself, recalling similar actions he had once performed towards her, or her team during a game earlier whilst still at Hogwarts.

The opposing team clearly lacked logic, one student, @Damien Dragonclaw, attempted to conceal himself despite the open air and little blockades that came in the environment required for doing such, albeit surrounded by open water and rocks cascading the area. Another attempted to spot the opposing team's flag, all to no avail — the new addition of their team being the only success they would see in zone two.

Diverting her binoculars to zone three, unscathed from any obstacles, one regent brought victory in a successful tackle towards the Grasshoppers, @Valour Argentum was their name. Valour had left @Skylar Blue so dazed that whatever she had planned in the moment only served no fruit to the Grasshoppers. On the other end, @Sage Willows had been avidly searching for the opposing teams flag, keen eye clearly in her favour as she was the first to spot the flag. Yet, just as she had succeeded in her search, she was met with a tackle from @Paul Turner, plummeting her down to the harsh ground with prickled twigs scratching her skin at the point of his wand with a successful Flipendo cast — a tactical move on his part that should potentially bare some kind of fruit. Another Grasshopper attempted to conceal her movements, naturally to no avail, the atmosphere was not working in their favour this round.

Placing her binoculars down for a moment, Meiyu reached for the megaphone nested nearby in the viewing tower, bringing it closer to her lips and calling out loudly, "THE SURINAME GRASSHOPPER'S FLAG HAS BEEN SPOTTED BY SAGE WILLOWS!"

Content at the pace and direction of this game, it would only be a matter of a few more rounds with hell already beginning to break loose.

HOW TO PLAY

The game ends when either team successfully retrieved the other teams flag to their base. Team Poison Dart Frog will be starting the game in Zone 1 and Team Suriname Grasshopper will be in Zone 4 at the opposite end of the arena. There will be at most 10 rounds, each requiring a post of 200+ words. Please make sure you include your character's stats in your post.

During the first round only, each team must state which zone their flag is hidden in to the thread moderator. You may chose to hide the flag in any of the 4 zones. The flag remains in that zone unless successfully discovered or moved through gameplay mechanics. Do not reveal in game where the flag is located.

Each round, everyone in the team must make at least one action from the Capture the Flag actions list, unless they are unable to act due to a status effect or restriction. These actions are zone dependent. The team scores points by making successful flag actions or interceptive actions towards a flag carrier. Please note that players may only move between adjacent zones and cannot skip zones while travelling.

At the conclusion of each round, the zone state map will be updated to reflect all player locations. Players may only target characters who are in the same zone as them at the end of the previous round. If a target moves out of the zone during the following movement phase, the action automatically fails, with the exception of Flag Intercept and non-magical support actions that include a chase mechanic. When performing these actions, the player automatically follows the target into the destination zone as part of the interaction.

If the action fails while chasing, the pursuing player is left behind in the original zone while the target successfully gains distance.

Rules regarding roll resolution, action priority, and other game mechanics can be found HERE.

At least one member of the team must owl the entire teams' action list to @Meiyu Xiang before the posting deadline.
