Rain and Thunder
Ileen clenched her hand tighter around the crumpled letter. She had drawn up her legs and wrapped both her arms around them. Her forehead rested on her knees, here eyes were closed. Although the rain fell down on her in a torrential stream, she felt nothing of it. Her clothes were soaked, her hair fell into her face in wet strands and yet she felt numb.
Rumbling thunder rolled over the lands of Hogwarts as the dark clouds, that piled up in the sky that afternoon, poured down all the rain they had stored. It looked like the world was coming to an end. For Ileen in that moment, it was that way.
All the mistrust, doubts and disappointment that she had accumulated towards their parents over the year were now discharged here together with this summer storm.
Honestly, she wondered how the owl, that had brought her the letter, had made it through the storm. This school year was coming to an end and Ileen had slowly started to think about what it would be like to face her parents. Now she knew. She just wouldn’t. There was no way she would return to them this summer. Angrily she blinked away a tear that ran down her face with the rain. She hadn't cried for years.
Thanks to Merlin, there was no one out in the weather but her.
After she had read the letter, she had not been able to stay in the Great Hall. She had just gotten up and gone outside. As soon as she had been out of sight of the house tables, she had started running. She just had kept running, wet to the skin after a few seconds.
And now she was sitting here at her favourite place, near the lake, the Forbidden Forest behind her. The lake was just a churning grey mass, while the wind, which was blowing in irregular heights over the land, was releasing raindrops from the leaves of the trees. She could see her mother's written words before her eyes, the ink must have been completely washed away by the rain.
Sweetheart,
We hope you are fine. Your father and I have decided to stay in New Zealand for the summer. If you need us to leave a ticket at the airport, please write us back. Of course we also understand if you prefer to stay with friends.
We look forward to hearing from you.

For the eleven-year-old girl, this was the last thing that was needed to completely destroy her trust in her parents. They were liars. They had left her behind and made a fresh start without her. Maybe they didn't want to face her any more than Ileen wanted to face them. Maybe they were afraid of what Ileen might have learned about them.
