Lily found herself grumbling as she entered the duelling club and raised a hand in greeting to the spectator of this fateful duel, Henry Holbrook. She had no idea how she got involved with this one to be honest. How she was dueling with another second year, even if she is a duelling captain. That may have started it since Lily has ambitions to be a captain herself one day. Which shouldn't be too hard if a second year got the position. Lily rolled her shoulders as she waited for the ravenclaw to show up. Honestly Lily loved duelling but the a.ount of duels she's already had this year kinda scared her. And a couple were with enemies, not exactly a duel just for fun like this one hopefully was. Though usually things that are just for fun don't end up with you unconscious or potentially hurt really bad. That was the only danger with duelling and one that actually didn't scare her, like other sports did. Once she did they got into their respective positions and Lily raised her wand to start casting spells. After bowing of course. You must always have manners even if you hope your competition does terribly.

This was becoming a recurring theme now. Fawkes couldn't help wanting to fight against the older years tho. It was so much fun. She truly enjoyed the feeling of duelling the older years even if it didn't always turn out the best.

Today, she had gotten Henry to mod the duel for her. Now the question was who exactly to fight? Well her question had been answered for her. An older Gryffindor girl was Fawkes' duelling opponent for the day. She vaguely knew who the girl was. The McCoires were rather well known in the castle. Well more specifically Colin was but that didn't mean the reputation didn't extend to the others. In particular, her opponent was Lily McCoire.

Well she didn't know much about the girl beyond the fact she was part of the McCoires. Fawkes didn't usually interact with the older students beyond duels such as this. Actually considering how often she did duel older students she knew quite a few of them now. Well now wasn't the time to reminisce. Now was the time to duel.

She found herself face to face with Lily and bowed slightly in greeting. May the best duellist win! She exclaimed before raising her wand ready to cast.

Henry had just settled into his seat when the spells started flying. He crossed one leg over the other as he kept watch. His notebook laid open against the angled leg, and his blue eyes occasionally flicked down to scan across the notes he'd scrawled out in his glittery green ink - just to make sure neither Fawkes nor Lily were breaking any of the rules he barely knew. So far seemingly so good.

He was glad to see that both duelists were being properly respectful to one another. With how brutal he was certain these matches could be, it was probably a good sign that things were off to a cordial start.

Now that he gave it some thought - it seemed more than a bit ironic to him that Fawkes was taking on a relative of the Astronomy professor, given that seemed to be her subject of choice. Maybe it was a tactic to try and get extra credit? He didn't remember seeing 'please go toe to toe with my kin, bonus points if you win' in the syllabus, but then again he'd only skimmed it.

No matter - there was little time to consider that now. The match had officially begun.

Fawkes struck first: a hex Henry wasn't familiar with yet - Impedimenta. He supposed it must be one he'd eventually learn in a higher year. Lily attempted to dodge, but the precisely aimed spell caught her in the side of her knee and it seemed to hobble her more than a little. Judging by the incantation, the impairment to her mobility was hardly a surprising effect for the spell to have.

Lily's spell followed soon after. The Hufflepuff moderating the match was surprised that he knew this one - he'd learned it last year. Where Fawkes had been going for a debuff against the Gryffindor, her opponent was coming out of the gate swinging with a Knockback Jinx. And a wonderfully executed spell at jinx at that, albeit one with an aim that was ever so slightly askew. Lucky for her, Fawkes - perhaps still ecstatic that she'd managed to land her spell against a girl 3 years her senior - didn't react QUITE soon enough to evade it. Rough break. Still! She'd managed to pull away enough that she didn't look as hurt as she might have otherwise.

Glancing blows from both opponents thus far, but everyone still had all their limbs intact so it was a promising start! He was excited to see where it went from here.

Lily was enjoying round one so far. She cast her spell a first. A nice Flipendo. She moved her wand in the required movement and whispered the incantation. Her spell casting was almost perfect, that even Fawkes barely dodged it. It hit her arm and sent the much younger girl back. The spell didn't cause the girl as much damage as Lily had hoped but at least it was something. Fawkes cast back at her an Impedimenta. And jees these people here really like that spell, don't they. The other duels she had witnessed and/or participated n, this spell was always cast at least once. Really, Lily should start casting this spell becaue apparently its a favorite around these parts. Lily tried to dodge but the spell caught her knee and she felt herself slowing. She grumbled unhappily but that was a part of any duel. She had to get used to it. She raised her wand to cast another spell at Fawkes. She prayed that Impedimenta had not completely messed up her accuracy because if it did Lily was definitely not going to be happy. She needed her accuracy to take Fawkes out...in a good way of course. She took a breath and started to move her wand.

Impedimenta. It was a spell she had recently learnt how to cast. And she absolutely loved the spell. It slowed down the opponent making them either easier to hit or easier to dodge their spells. Both worked in her favour. Especially against her senior.

Her spell had hit. Barely. Actually to be more specific it had hit her knee. Not exactly what Fawkes was aiming for but it served the purpose she needed it to. Honestly it seemed the girl wasn't the most experienced when it came to duelling. Which was a bit of a surprise to her but at the same time she knew some people just stuck to one sport and didn't touch the others for years. She couldn't blame them. She herself was scared to play quidditch after all. Broom racing? she wasn't too sure on her stance with the sport but she was certain with her love for duelling.

Unfortunately, she wasn't paying attention to her opponent during this train of thought and dodged a bit too late. She was partially hit by the spell. She let out a small hiss of pain but it faded rather quickly. Her only worry was the fact she knew no healing spells whatsoever. But that wasn't about to stop her. She raised her wand again.

As far as Henry was concerned, moderating a duel seemed like a breeze thus far. Just stand back, make sure they don’t permanently disfigure one another, and have the hospital wing on alert just in case they manage to try to do that anyway. It was such a peaceful activity for him in fact, that he leaned back in his seat to observe. He was getting a wee bit peckish anyhow. Rummaging around in his pocket, he fished out a ginger newt and watched as the eyes swivelled about in the sweet and spicy baked good as he released it from its crinkly plasticine prison.


In fact, so focused on this task was the hungry Hufflepuff that he failed to notice when his supposed friend Fawkes - her mind seemingly still lost in the stars (nothing new) - cast an Incendio Duo not at her opponent, but at him! Granted, even his own distracted mind managed to notice an encroaching gout of flame heading in his direction before it got there. With a particularly startled “EEP!” he scrambled backwards, very nearly toppling backwards in order to avoid the inferno. While he personally managed to mostly dodge, an aroma of burnt hair filled the air around his head, and in his scurrying his snack had flown upwards out of his grasp, and now came snowing down onto him as a flurry of ginger scented ash.

His hand pressed flat against his heaving chest, he returned to his previous position, “Fawkes, if you were trying to keep me on my toes, that was a bloody brutal way to go about it!” Despite his panic, there was a distinctly manic laugh coloring his tone. Damn Hufflepuffs and their mildly pyromaniac tendencies.

While he was busy shouting, Lily took her own turn. Yet another beautifully executed Flipendo streaking towards her opponent, and even more on the mark than the first. However, unfortunately for the enterprising lioness, the eagle sharing the piste managed to just barely avoid the attack.

Still trying to get his heart back to a reasonable BPM, he waved for the pair to get back to their positions.

Lily had cast her spell first and as she watched it fly by Fawkes by a inch- a fricking inch!!- she frowned and had to wonder if it was her accuracy or Fawkes' evasion. Whatever it was Lily truly hoped that it would give her better luck next time around. Fawkes' spell next was way off, but it was Incendio Duo so Lily could feel the heat. The heat that went straight towards Henry. Lily had to giggle a bit and call out to Fawkes. "Good spell! You almost burned Henry to a crisp!" Lily glanced at Henry, his face flushed presumably from the duck, adrenaline, and heat of the moment. A pun was definitely intended there, Lily thought to herself as she turned back to Fawkes, after reasonably making sure Henry was okay. Her focus went back to the duel for about two minutes, before she thought of how her parents would be so happy that she was doing really well here at Hogwarts. After all, they had been so excited when she first attended Hogwarts. They would have loved to see her animagus. Her mom had absolutely loved foxes so she would have definitely loved Lily's own fox. Lily dragged her daydream back to the duel and raised her wand to cast the spell.

Honestly she should have known using Incendio with a phoenix feather wand core would mean a less controlled flame. So her using Incendio Duo was dangerous. She knew what would happen. Yet was surprised when it did. The spell missed completely and ignited Henry's hair. It thankfully went out immediately but still. Sorry! She called out wincing. She glanced down to her wand and mumbled more to herself than to it. Okay if we're gonna do this you have to co-operate with me.

She luckily looked up just in time to avoid another Flipendo sent her way. She jumped out of the way, nearly tripping over her own feet and falling. She really needed to be more careful during these duels. She couldn't cause herself to fall or stumble on accident and then be in danger trying to get back up. She had to stay focused. This was her chance to improve her skills for the official matches whenever she made the team. She would start taking the steps to becoming an auror just like her mother. And that of course started with duelling. Yes studies were important as well, but so was learning to duel well. She raised her wand once again at the older girl.

Henry waved off Fawkes' apology with a chuckle and snorted at Lily's quip about almost getting burnt, he wasn't too bothered by the accident, and he had a feeling that even if he'd gotten hit by it he was at least sturdy enough to take a few good casts of that spell - assuming they didn't crit or anything. Merlin knows he was all too familiar with what it's like to properly goof something up. He tried to hide the sympathetic wince as the Ravenclaw stumbled while attempting to avoid the lioness' spell. He would've been flustered after that as well. It wasn't the most graceful of dodges, that was true, however this was a duel, not figure skating in the Olympics. So long as you got out of the way of whatever spell was being sent your way, who gave a crap how elegant you looked while doing it.

He wasn't sure whether to be terrified or delighted that both contestants decided to opt for a firefight in the most literal sense imaginable. On one hand, he could still very much smell the aroma of his own burnt hair wafting through the room, and he would be oh so very appreciative if he could avoid any more near misses like that today. On the other hand... the little pyromaniac badger sighed as he watched. Fire was oh so pretty when he wasn't the one on the receiving end of it. The cognitive dissonance was strong with this one.

Fawkes had cast the initial ignition, and goodness... that Impedimenta spell was not doing Lily many favors at all, was it? Even with a glancing blow - by now it seemed to be, well... impeding her ability to dodge the oncoming inferno. Fitting for the incantation, Henry supposed. And as it hit her, the Hufflepuff was even more glad that he'd managed to somehow dodge the flames that had come for him last round - that looked like it hurt. AND it set Lily on fire? Dueling wasn't for the faint of heart, that was for sure. Putting up with something like that took a lot of guts.

Next up came Lily's attempt, and once again that spell that had kept her from dodging properly was back to punish her even worse than it already had been, because while she did successfully get the spell off, the aim wasn't quite as on point as she was likely hoping it would be. He sure hoped this spell of Fawkes' had a fairly short timeframe in which it affected someone, or else Lily might be awkwardly shuffling her way around the school for a while even after the duel was over.
