Sorting Ceremony 2026-2027

The huge doors to the Great Hall slowly opened with an eerie creak. The sight beyond stole the breath of every first-year standing behind.

Maheen walked in, raising her eyes automatically towards the enchanted ceiling. It reflected the night sky of September beautifully, navy blue with innumerable glittering stars as if the roof was gone altogether. Hundreds and hundreds of floating candles with their glowing golden lights hovered above, neither melting nor falling through, illuminating the ancient stone walls.

She could not breathe.

So this is Hogwarts.

The hall was alive with chatter. Students of all houses filled the four long tables, their robes trimmed in emerald, crimson, blue, and yellow. Some of them were muttering in curiosity as the first-year students entered, while some were talking to themselves and did not seem to care at all. How rude.

Her nose twitched in distaste but she directed her focus back to the beauty of the room.

It was overwhelming.

But exciting, too.

The professors were seated at the High Table with an air of quiet authority. Behind them stood the staff members’ chairs under banners displaying the insignia of the four Houses.

First years assembled before the table where the professors sat, standing side by side. Maheen folded her arms at the back in order not to fidget, although she was feeling quite nervous.

The Sorting Hat was placed on a plain wooden stool.

Old.

Weathered.

Insignificant.

Suddenly, however, the hat became alive!

She flinched, barely, but enough that she quickly looked around, hoping no one saw. How embarassing...

Its brim turned into a mouth when it started singing, its voice filling the entire Great Hall. The students listened quietly, but Maheen was observing it instead.

How can something so old tell where you belong?

When the song ended, Professor McGonagall walked out, parchment in hand.

The hall was quiet.

Names were announced.

One by one.

Each student sat on the stool until the cheers could be heard from one of the House tables.

"Hufflepuff!"

"Gryffindor!"

"Slytherin!"

"RAVENCLAW!"

The cheering was non-stop.

With each announcement of a name before her, Maheen could hear her heart beat faster.

She wasn't scared of being sorted.

She just wanted everything to be correct.

Please do not assign me randomly.

She had imagined this day for years. She had read so many books, had listened to all the tales of her family, wondering who she was going to become.

And then,

"Ali, Maheen."

Her own voice sounded unnaturally loud.

All conversations ceased.

She breathed in deeply before walking forward.

Each step she took reverberated on the stone floor. She fought the impulse to look around at the students looking at her. Rather, her gaze stayed trained on the stool beneath the levitating candles.

She sat.

The hat fell across her eyes.

Darkness.

Then silence.

But only until a voice, ancient and dry but strangely warm, rang within her head.

"Ah..."

He paused, thinking.

"Now here's an interesting one."

Maheen did not move at all.

"Calm exterior... but your thoughts never cease."

...Indeed.

"She observes before acting. She thinks before speaking. A good trait."

She couldn't resist feeling a bit impressed.

It can actually read my mind.

"Oh yes," the Hat answered, almost amused. "Every little thought."

Maheen quickly tried not to think of anything.

The Hat chuckled quietly.

"That never works."

Heat started to rise into her cheeks under the brim.

"Let’s see…"

A pause.

One that made her stomach clench.

"Ambitious."

Another pause.

"Very ambitious."

Her heart missed a beat.

"Not because anyone told you to be. Because you demand it of yourself."

The words hit her harder than expected.

"You hate mediocrity. Losing irritates you more than you will ever admit out loud. Success isn’t enough for you, only success that you’ve earned."

She found herself smiling.

Only a little bit.

"You think of more than anyone knows. Whole worlds of endless possibilities… absolutely fascinating, really. People always assume your quietness means simplicity. How wrong they are."

Maheen smiled even wider.

"You like puzzles. Strategy. Competition."

She remembered all the stories she had heard about Hogwarts.

All the Quidditch and dueling.

And the secret hallways ready to be explored.

She wanted it all.

Dead silence followed.

For the first time since the hat had been placed on her head, doubt entered her mind.

"Ravenclaw would appreciate your imagination."

Her heartbeat accelerated.

"Gryffindor would admire your nerve."

Silence again.

"However, neither of those houses captures the true essence of you."

All went silent.

"Deep within yourself, your motivation is purpose."

The Hat laughed.

"Just keep in mind..."

Its tone became softer.

"Ambition is your strength. Do not let it consume you."

The message sank in quietly in Maheen's mind.

I won't.

Apparently, the Hat was satisfied with her response.

It then shouted in triumph so loudly that it could be heard throughout the entire Great Hall,

"SLYTHERIN!"

Thunderous applause filled the emerald and silver table.

Even before removing the hat, relief washed through her body.

Not because Slytherin was what she expected. Even though her father was a Slytherin through generations, her mother was Hufflepuff.

Lifting the Sorting Hat off her head, she noticed the students who made way for her to sit down on the Slytherin table. Some smiled with encouragement. Others clapped politely. There were those who just looked at her curiously, as if already trying to figure out who she was.

This is my home.

Approaching the Slytherin table confidently, the applause faded behind her.

Nervous and excited Kyrie's eyes were darting all over the place trying to take everything in, Hogwarts looked amazing from what she and the other first years were seeing at the moment. The amount of people who were going to be in the same year as her wasn't something she expected, and hopefully she will be able to make at least one friend. Kyrie was in awe of how the ceiling looked like the night sky outside, the enchantment that was used is something she hopes they learn in Charms class eventually as it would be an amazing spell to learn. She then noticed a stool with a very old and faded pointed hat that Professor McGonagall, she figured this might be the sorting hat her gran told her about since her gran is English and went to Hogwarts. She was glad that finding out what house she will end up in wouldn't be some sort of test, which she can't imagine how her schoolmates each felt and thought about how they would all be getting sorted into their houses. The hat started to sing a song about each of the houses, which took her by surprise as she didn't hear about that. One by one each first year got sorted starting by their surname, her's started with a W so she was going to be next to last because of that. "Whelan, Kyrie" Professor McGonagall called out once she got to the Ws, Kyrie went up to the stool and sat down as Professor McGonagall placed that hat on her head. "Hmm interesting." A voice in her head had said which shocked her. "There is a desire for knowledge, Hogwarts has a lot of knowledge to offer a dedicated student" The voice said which made her nervous as she had no idea what is going on. "There is also ambition as well I see, but the need for wisdom to not go down the wrong path because of it." Kyrie was starting to wonder if she wouldn't end up in any house or if she would end up having to pick between two houses, but then all of a sudden the hat shouts for the whole hall to hear. "RAVENCLAW!" Kyrie hears some cheering going on as the hat is lifted off her head, which she saw was coming from the table second to the left. She hurriedly went and sat down never having felt so stressed before in her nearly twelve years of living.

Yseult had never been around this many kids her age all at once, and the chatter was overwhelming; it reminded her of her visits with her many cousins in America, amplified ten-fold. Her eyes wildly darted around the room, noting the faces of her classmates and the upper-classmen, her heart beat rapidly. Gosh, she wasn't expecting to be quite so nervous.

"Yseult Arand," the Headmaster called.
As she approached the stool, she began to pick at her thumbnail, a nervous habit that her mother scolded her for. She sat, and the Sorting Hat was placed atop her head. Her mind was racing, her father had been a Ravenclaw, her Grandfather and Grandmother, too. Her mother of course, having gone to Ilvermorny, wouldn't care. But, she couldn't bear the thought of disappointing her father or grandparents. Well, she wasn't certain they would be disappointed in her if she weren't placed in Ravenclaw, but she felt dread at being placed anywhere else, all the same.
"Ravenclaw!" The Sorting Hat shouted, after barely a few seconds had passed.
She let out a screech of happiness, and then blushed. The Ravenclaw table clapped politely for her; she slid from the stool and proceeded to the table, eyes searching for an empty spot on a bench.

He hadn't known what to expect as he stood in front of the grand doors to the Great Hall with the other first-years. Everything up to this point had already been far more than he could possibly expect but as the grand doors opened, his mouth almost instantly went agape in awe as his eyes looked around the large room in front of him. The room was huge with high ceilings and long tables that held a number of people who, he assumed, were other students. There were candles floating high above that looked like sparkling stars in the night sky and, for a split second, Morgan did have a thought of would this be dangerous as his first thought would be that there was the possible danger of hot wax dripping from them and then falling on to people which seemed bad before then realizing that if there was magic to make them float then there was probably magic to prevent that as well or they were possibly just magic candles. His thoughts quickly returned to the current moment, just barely managing to stop as the rest of the group stopped walking as they had reached the front of the hall where there was a hat and a man who introduced himself as the Headmaster.

Now there are a number of things Morgan could have thought he would see today but when the hat suddenly began to talk and then sing as it was placed upon a stool, he really wasn't sure what to think. He supposed maybe in the magical world this was a normal occurrence and he had vaguely remembered reading something about a talking hat in one of the books he had gotten during his school shopping but there was a definite difference between reading and actually seeing and hearing. He supposed maybe eventually he would get used to the idea of magic actually being real and that with that there were a whole number of extraordinary things he couldn't have ever expected to see but for now he was still an eleven year old boy who had never dreamed that magic was actually real so for now he would continue to just be in awe and attempt to take things one step at a time.

It was at this point when the Sorting Hat, the hat's title or name Morgan wasn't really sure, would now sort student's into whatever house it deemed fit the individual best and the house they would stay with for the rest of their years at Hogwarts. The Headmaster began to call out names and one by one students would go up and be sorted, students cheering when they received a new student in their house. All Morgan could think about was how he wasn't particularly looking forward to going up in front of a bunch of people and that hopefully, the hat would just be quick and he could quickly just go to a table and have no more attention directly on him. It's about that point he heard the Headmaster say, "Morgan Faughn!"

With a deep breath, Morgan carefully made his way through the students before making it to the stool and sitting down. He kept his eyes slightly on the floor and felt the hat placed on his head, heart pounding more as he heard a voice suddenly speak in his head. "Hmm... very interesting, certainly a nervous one aren't you," the voice said and Morgan couldn't help but look around slightly, trying to figure out where the voice was coming from when he suddenly realized that it was the hat who was talking to him which did fascinate him, wondering how exactly the hat was talking to him in his head and, if this did happen with everyone, what exactly other people heard when they were getting sorted. "Ah a curious one I see as well, eager to learn and find out more about the world around you so... perhaps you could go to Ravenclaw," the hat pondered and Morgan fiddled slightly with the edges of his robes, unsure of what to think in fear he would somehow interrupt the hat's thought process. "Hmm... but no, no. There's a bit more there, a kindness perhaps hidden behind the studious, quiet nature. Caring, loyal, yes... I do think it will have to be -"

"HUFFLEPUFF!"

Claps and applause broke out for this newest member of the Hufflepuff house, and Morgan let out a very slight breath that he had been holding as the hat was lifted from his head. He quickly made his way over to the Hufflepuff table, ensuring not to trip and make a fool of himself. He wasn't sure what this meant for him but looking at the faces that greeted him that seemed kind and welcoming made him a little more at ease and maybe, just maybe things would be alright, maybe he could find a place here. And besides, who was he to argue with the magical talking hat.

Taurus was nervous. He was lead into the Great Hall towards the front of the large room. All eyes were on the new students about to be sorted. He could feel butterflies floating around in his stomach. The first handful of students went before him, one by one, and they were sorted into their houses. Some took just a few moments before the Hat had chosen their House for them, other seemed to draw on for several minutes.

"DRAGONHORN, TAURUS!", called the deputy headmaster.

Taurus jumped at hearing his name. He put on as brave a front as he could muster and walked towards the middle of the stage. He sat upon the stool and took in a deep breath, releasing what he hoped would be his stress and nerves.

The Hat was lowered onto his head.

"Hmmmm... a lover of animals, I see. A willingness to learn all about them, but a love for them above all else. It could go either way. Drive, passion, a thirst for knowledge, kindness, and yet a heart for horses, eh? Ahhhhh, this one could be in one of three."

In his mind, Taurus simply thought he wanted to be accepted, in a House that would simply accept him for who he was. He wanted to pursue the study of Magizoology, yes, but he was shy and wanted to make sure he wasn't bullied and was able to make friends.

"You worry about being bullied, eh?" remarked the Hat.

Wait... the thing could read his mind?

"Well, in that case, with your love of animals and your kindness... you should be in... HUFFLEPUFF!"

A roar of applause sounded from the table decorated in yellow and black. That was when Taurus realized he was finally Home.

Trixie wasn't nervous, No, she was smiling. Staring in awe at the roof that was raining! She reached her hand out to see if she could feel the droplets and her grin widened when she felt nothing. She adjusted her robes, still not used to the texture of them on her skin. She waited as patiently as she could for her turn but ended up fidgeting in excitement.

Other students were looking ashen so she smiled at them too, waving her hand and then focusing back on the hall around her.
"Trixie Astoria!"
Trixie walked up to the stand and said "Hello sir, hello smaller sir." Before sitting down on the stool.
Hello Sorting Hat, it`s a pleasure to meet you. She thought, clasping her hands together.
What lovely manners, a kind heart, and a such persistence despite changing countries. Well there is no doubt..."HUFFLEPUFF!"

Trixie heart swells and warms her like sunlight, she bows and thanks the hat. She moves to the Hufflepuff table, determined to make friends with everyone in her house and as many of the other houses let her.

Her mothers would be ecstatic, she was ecstatic. Her happiness was only briefly doused by the smell of food in front of her. Fuck. Trixie! The voice of her mother in her chiding for her language. She ignores that voice temporarily and eats slowly, swallowing as much as she can. She is not going to let something like food get in the way of her first night.

Charlotte's breath caught in her throat as she entered the Great Hall. She had often read about it in books and in her family chronicle, but even stepping inside this incredible work of art was breathtaking. The sky on the ceiling and the many tables and benches had an unreal quality. Flags bearing the house crests hung above each long row of tables. And that's precisely what brought Charlotte back to reality. Her father had instilled in her that all houses were okay, except Slytherin. And he'd also said that he would only be happy if she were sorted into Gryffindor. Just like every generation, including her father, had been there. Now Charlotte felt nervous, and her stomach began to flutter. She walked through the Great Hall with the other first-year students. Children looked at them from all sides. When they reached the front, the headmaster began to speak. When he had finished, a man read out each name, one by one. It felt like hours had passed, and Charlotte grew increasingly nervous. But then, finally: "Kingston, Charlotte." Her hands became clammy with sweat as she stepped forward. Her heart pounded, and in her mind she thought, "I absolutely mustn't be sorted into Slytherin!" The hat was placed on her head, and a voice in her head began to speak: "Kingston... Hmm. You have a great reputation. You want to make your father proud and be like your brother. I see courage and great intelligence. And stubbornness. That suits Slytherin." Charlotte thought in a panic, "Not Slytherin, please no." The hat replied, as if in response, "But not Slytherin, you say? Hmm... I have to disappoint you: Slytherin!" Charlotte's heart practically stopped. Slytherin?! The worst nightmare! Her father would be so disappointed, maybe even hate her! Swallowing back her tears, she went to the Slytherin table, even though she desperately wanted to go the other way.
