Down in the Grounds W. Starkey & C. Ironwoods C

12TH OF MAY 2020
As soon as the last period had finished, Elodie decided to head down to the grounds. She still had an excruciatingly complicated piece of Transfiguration homework (though, wasn't all Transfiguration homework excruciating and long to Elodie?) but had decided to put it aside, unable to bear another minute indoors. The Hufflepuff common room was cosy, but quickly overheated. Outside was much more appealing - the sky was cobalt blue, with not a cloud in sight. The sun was out, but a cool breeze gently carried any excess heat away. The castle lay silhouetted against the skies, seemingly far away, and the noise of chattering students could be heard, separate voices mixing to create a symphony of sound.

Elodie made her way across the grounds carefully, her eyes scanning the grass, searching for a suitable place to rest. Despite the pleasant weather, the grounds were nearly empty. Elodie could see at least four separate groups, gathered together in a tight huddle, but the grounds covered a wide expanse, and they looked almost bare with the lack of students. Nevertheless, it did not bother Elodie, and she continued to walk down.

Not very far away, Elodie found a large, but squat, tree, with a thick trunk and dark, ash-coloured skin. She walked over to it, and sat in the shade of the tree, her dark, bronze-coloured legs sprawled out in front of her, and her fingers idly making criss-crossed lines in the grassy dirt. Her eyebrows were furrowed, and her lips pursed themselves together tightly, as she focused on her dirt drawings.

Wyatt could not stand another minute in that castle. Back home, he’d always run through the forest, and he hadn’t been doing a lot of that lately. He’d finished all of his homework, even potions, which was obnoxiously long and difficult. Though he was a Slytherin, he’d always loved and excelled at charms. Seeing a perfectly flat rock on the ground, he decided to pick it up. He tossed it to the lake and it skipped 4 times, he smiled, a new record.

He was walking along the black lake when he noticed Elodie. They’d met before, on the train to school. She was drawing in the dirt, but she looked very focused. It was as if she was creating the masterpiece of the generation. Wyatt walked over to say hi, because why not. He needed more human friends. Snakes are cool, but it’s just not the same.

β€œHello, da Vinci,” he said. Upon further inspection, though, whatever she’d been drawing in the dirt was just a lot of lines and scribbles. β€œOr maybe Pollock,” he said. He hadn’t said many words to Elodie since the train, and even on the Hogwarts Express, they shared very few words. She seemed like a hothead, but sometimes first impressions can be misleading.

Elodie looked up when the words were spoken. She squinted her eyes, half-blinded by the sun, but could still see who had approached her. It had been a while since she had last seen him, but she still recognised his appearance: skinny, white, with tousled-dark hair and bags underneath his eyes, and circular-black earrings. Wyatt. The bags that lay underneath his eyes were still a curious factor that Elodie still wondered at. She had met Wyatt on the Hogwarts Express, and the only part of his appearance that had changed were his clothes: he wore a sweater atop of jeans.

Elodie smiled at Wyatt's comment. "Hi Wyatt, I haven't seen you for a while," she said, shifting her sitting position slightly. She then looked down at her absent-minded drawings, the subject of the conversation. "And... they're just scribbles, really. I'm not that good of an artist, though I wish I was."

Elodie spoke with a friendly tone, which could be seen as unusual, given that she was normally quite timid in front of people she didn't know, but Elodie knew that Wyatt had seen her at her worst: arguing against Mars in the Hogwarts Express compartment. So, if Wyatt already knew the bad side of her (or a least some of it), part of that fear for strangers was gone, as so was her timid, shy nature around strangers. She just hoped he didn't hold any type of grudge against her, from the events that happened on the Hogwarts Express.

"Hi Wyatt, I haven't seen you for a while," she said as she shifted, slightly. Wyatt wondered if the sitting position was annoying or if she was uncomfortable with the situation. He assumed the former since she didn’t show any other signs of discomfort and spoke with a friendly tone. Though, it wasn’t all that strange. If he’d shown a certain side of himself to someone in his first meeting, he’d likely be more comfortable around them. Wyatt wouldn’t know, though. He always kept his face hollow, emotionless. It was easier to do that than to actually talk to someone and befriend them.

"And... they're just scribbles, really. I'm not that good of an artist, though I wish I was."

β€œIt’s all practice. Picasso wasn’t traditional in his art. He made art out of strange lines and shapes, and people adore him. It’s just imagination, really.”

He couldn't remember if Elodie had grown up in the muggle world. If she hadn't, she'd probably have no idea who he was talking about.

Wyatt wasn’t an artist, and if he tried to be, he wouldn’t be a good one, but if he cared enough he could probably do it. Everything’s practice. Wyatt really admired art, though. The real art was seeing what everyone else could see, and making it just as incredible to the world as it is to you. Not just that, but also showing people that think like you that they’re not alone. Elodie’s lines meant… nothing to Wyatt, but someone else might come around and think it represents how messed up their life is at the moment. It was the same with other forms of art like music, acting, and writing.

Wyatt sat down even thought his first meeting with Elodie was unpleasant. She seemed nice. People aren’t mean all the time, or happy all the time, he thought.

If Elodie was completely honest, Wyatt's answer slightly surprised her. Where she had grown up (in Oldham, Manchester, where the majority of the population were quite poor), sparse few people would speak as Wyatt did. She listened, slightly in awe, as he had told her quite knowledgeably about Picasso, his style, and his fame. Back in Manchester, most of the kids were more interested in playing football, or stealing something from a neighbours backyard, than having intellectual conversations. On reflection, Elodie supposed the idea of talking about facts might seem like a bad one, especially to little kids.

"True," she noted. She smiled slightly as a thought came to her mind. "I guess, if I do practice enough, I could become an artist. But for now, I think I'll stick to dirt drawings and scribbling doodles on my Transfiguration notes."

In all seriousness, Wyatt's comment have been quite nice. Elodie racked her thoughts, trying to remember what house he was in. The Sorting had been quite a while ago now, and although Elodie had tried to remember all of her fellow First Year's Sorting, the task had proved too difficult. Luckily, Wyatt's Sorting did come to her, as she remembered it in a flash. Slytherin. "You were Sorted into Slytherin, right? How's that been, are you glad you went there?"

The question was more a conversation starter than anything, but Elodie was quite curious to hear about the other houses, and what it was like there. And, up until now, Wyatt had been the first Slytherin she had been able to converse with. Plus, compared to the Slytherins' scary reputation, Wyatt seemed a kind alternate.

Cassie decided that today is the day they wrote their new entry for their journal. They got out from their dorm room, taking their quill, ink bottle and their journal with them. Upon arriving on the ground Cassie pick the least spot sun streamed through. They seated under one of the tree that shade them.
Laying down all the things they bring beside them on the grass. Cassie lean back into the thick tree trunk and close their eyes. Taking a huge breath through their nose and exhales it slowly through their mouth. They repeated the process for several times. The process somewhat ease Cassie chaos mind.
They can feel something huge is about to come at their way, but Cassie did not know what is that yet. Pulled both of their legs towards their chest and picking up their journal so their journal now rested on their legs, Cassie faintly heard two people conversing not far from where they situated.
It seems both of them already know each other from the way they converse with each other. Cassie unscrew their ink bottle, laid their quill for awhile inside the ink bottle and unlock their journal, ready to write down their new entry.

"You were Sorted into Slytherin, right? How's that been, are you glad you went there?"

β€œWell, I’ve learned Slytherins are quite obnoxious. You have the mischievous Slytherins, the Slytherins from blood-purist families, the Slytherins who make you sleep with one eye open…” He could go on forever. β€œThere are kind ones though... if you look hard enough. Dumb ones too, the dull ones are my favorite,” he said with a small, crooked smile. They’re easy to win against, in verbal fights. Wyatt would never win a physical fight.

β€œI don’t know where else I could’ve gone.” In truth, there was no other house for Wyatt. β€œWhat about Hufflepuff... Was it? How is it over there?” He didn’t really like talking, but he did it anyway like he was taught. Elodie asked about his experience, so he asked about hers.

He saw a girl walk over and sit under the shade of a nearby tree. What worried him was that the girl was within earshot. They weren’t talking about anything classified or confidential, but Wyatt didn’t like being watched or heard. The conversation was just about their houses, so it didn’t matter much, though he felt uncomfortable.

He turned his attention back to Elodie, awaiting her answer to his question. He’d always wondered if Hufflepuffs are as kind as they make themselves out to be. Every Hufflepuff he’d met had been pretty nice with the exception of one.

Elodie listened with interest to Wyatt's evaluation of his house. It was interesting, not only in the sense that Elodie hadn't known this before, but also in the sense that she could easily say the same for her fellow Hufflepuffs. She didn't mean that there were the same categories of Hufflepuffs, but there were categories all the same.

"Actually, I can kinda see that in the Hufflepuff kids as well. Like, you'll get the over-friendly ones, who'll just talk for hours, and the too-friendly kids, who would probably die for a complete stranger. And then you get the kids who aren't friendly at all, and you wonder why they're in Hufflepuff at all." Elodie paused for a second. Someone walked over to Wyatt and her. They sat themselves down near a tree, not close to Wyatt and herself, but not exactly far either.

Glancing at Wyatt, she noted that he seemed slightly apprehensive at the entrance of the stranger. As if it were contagious, doubt and worry began to worm themselves into Elodie's mind. Should she be worried about the stranger? Elodie had managed to stay friendly and chatty towards Wyatt for the past five-or-so minutes. But, the addition of a stranger could tip the delicate weight she had been trying to balance. Elodie took some deep breaths in hope it would calm her down, and continued to speak.

"But, all in all, I'm glad I was picked for Hufflepuff. I think the Sorting Hat made the right choice."

Apparently, Elodie had the same experience as Wyatt. She’d met all kinds of kids in her house, not just goodie-two-shoes Hufflepuffs. It was good to know that the other houses were just as ridiculous and random. Being able to share experiences made him feel less alone. It was a nice feeling, one he didn’t show of course, but he felt it.

"But, all in all, I'm glad I was picked for Hufflepuff. I think the Sorting Hat made the right choice."

β€œThe sorting hat is interesting. Lear said it was sentient, then the hat corrected him and said it was intelligent.” That had been bothering Wyatt for a while. Intelligent? What is that supposed to mean? β€œIt reads your thoughts and puts you exactly where you have to be. I know a few people who weren’t happy with what they got, but only a few.”

He didn’t know why he was in a reassuring mood today, or a mood to talk to people at all, but he was already doing it anyway, so he kept it up. Maybe it was because no one called him a rude name in the halls or beat him up, yet.

Still, he couldn’t help but look over at the girl who sat by Elodie and himself every few seconds. She seemed to be minding her own business, but Wyatt was always very paranoid.
