The sound reached her first.

As she and Stelle raced towards the Lake, or at least attempted to, running as fast as they could without slipping on the rain-soaked earth—a deep, rhythmic roar slowly rose above the storm. It wasn't thunder. This was steadier, a constant voice carried by the wind. Pam slowed to listen for a second before her friend's momentum pulled her along.

The Great Lake emerged from the rain gradually, as though it had been carved out of the storm itself.

She stopped altogether.

The opposite shore seemed like it had disappeared completely, swallowed by layers of rain until sky and water blended together in an endless stretch of grey. The horizon was no longer visible through the screen of rain, no clear line where one ended and the other began. Without the distant shoreline to measure it against, the Great Lake suddenly felt much bigger than she remembered. Endless, almost.

Winds swept across the surface, lifting perfect waves where there should have been stillness, and the rain hammered against the water with such relentless force that the entire lake seemed to tremble beneath it. Millions of droplets burst across the surface every second, each ripple colliding with another until it shimmered like liquid glass, forever changing, forever moving.

"...Woah."

Which about summed up Pam's thoughts in a nutshell.

"How beautiful..." She mumbled, utterly starstruck.

A beat passed.

"Do you think the Giant Squid likes thunderstorms?"

Stelle's remained motionless for a few seconds, her breath still ragged from running. The wind continued to tangle her golden curls, and the rain fell with an almost poetic obstinacy, soaking her already heavy uniform. Yet none of that seemed to matter in the face of the spectacle unfolding before her eyes. The lake was not the same one she had known under the sun. It was a different creature. The waves breathed like the chest of a sleeping giant, and the water seemed to swallow the sky in an immense watercolor of grays and silver. Each flash of lightning illuminated that immensity for an instant, revealing mountains of water that vanished again into the curtain of rain. There was something profoundly terrifying about that beauty, a kind of loveliness that didn't ask to be understood, but rather contemplated with the reverence one gives to the ancient gods. Stelle felt her heart beat with an eerie calm.

"It's beautiful..." she whispered, almost as if afraid of breaking the spell with a voice too loud. For a moment, she forgot the cold, the mud clinging to her boots, and the long walk they had taken just to satisfy a shared curiosity. Pam's question made her chuckle softly. She turned to face her with a warm smile as a few drops of water trickled down her eyelashes.

"I think so," she said, glancing back at the rippling surface. "If I were a giant squid, I'd choose stormy days to go for a stroll. No one could see me in all that rain... and I'd have the whole lake to myself." For a moment, she imagined those enormous tentacles moving beneath the dark waters, invisible from the shore, following the rhythm of the waves as if they too were dancing with the storm. She took another step closer to where the water kissed the flooded land. The wind lifted the edge of her cape as if to push her toward the lake, but Stelle remained steady, her hands clasped behind her back, her eyes lost on that nonexistent horizon.

"You know what I like most?" she asked, without taking her eyes off the water " The lake isn't trying to be pretty today. It's not calm, nor does it reflect the sky like in fairy tales. It's raging... and yet it's still beautiful." Her words were almost immediately lost in the roar of the wind. She inhaled deeply the scent of rain and wet earth, letting the cool air fill her lungs.

"It was totally worth coming all the way here, don't you think? Even if we catch a cold for a whole week afterward. I think I'd still say yes again." And without taking her eyes off the lake, it resonated like someone who has just captured a memory they know they will cherish forever.

"Apparently the giant squid is named Herman," Pam said, suddenly remembering her conversation with Simon Kincaid a few months ago, "Did I ever mention that before?" Even after so many months, Pam could not be happy about the fact that a creature like the Giant Squid, which admittedly she had never seen in her life, could have such an ordinary name. She didn't quite like it.

Did the namer run out of their daily supply of creativity?

Well, it was irrelevant. She listened to Stelle's words, inching closer to the shore. Water rolled up the land in inky waves, and somewhere in all the rain and haze, the line separating the end of land and beginning of water had all but disappeared into a blur.

Excellent. The storm has thoughtfully removed the visual indicator for "don't step here." I thought we were friends? Traitor.

"If I accidentally miss a step and fall into the water please save me. Drowning feels very inconvenient at the moment."

It did not come to that, luckily, as she knelt down, reaching out to dip a hand into the raging waters. The icy water bit at her skin immediately, stealing the warmth from her fingers until they tingled, "Ok that is co-o-old—"

Rain drummed endlessly against the lake's surface, shattering every reflection into thousands of dancing fragments. The wind tugged at loose strands of hair, filling with it the unmistakable scent of wet earth and freshwater. "Pretty is very subjective though," she remarked, running her hands through the storm-tossed water despite the freeze that was gradually numbing her hand, "Even storms can be pretty, right? To the correct person? There's often beauty in dangerous things."

Is that where my fascination with story villains stems from.

Somewhere farther out, a swell rose higher than the rest before collapsing with a low, rumbling roar that sounded like distant thunder. "It would be fun to live underwater in a situation like this though no?" she smiled up at Stelle, "Imagine if this had been an open ocean..."

Ignoring the minor issue of probably immediately becoming shark food.

"I agree, it is nice to be here, even if my runny nose tomorrow will disagree." She laughed softly. Maybe tomorrow she would regret standing in the rain for so long. Right now, though, it felt worth every shiver.
