Paul was waiting for the last lesson to finally take place. It was literally the only thing that prevented him from going out, moreover, with the weather being so, so pretty. It was sunny, the temperature was high enough for the air to be pleasantly warm, but not too hot. The wind was blowing and Paul could, therefore, almost feel it ruffling his hair gently, when he found a moment during the day, after lunch, to go out and check what the weather was like that day.

He was wearing a short-sleeved, baggy T-shirt and casual jeans and a dark green sweatshirt and on his feet, there were black sneakers. On his way from the castle, he didn't forget to grab a snack - a banana - from the Great Hall. Then, he started trotting towards the entrance and down the lawns.

He found a suitable tree, when on his way towards the broom shed, which he chose to climb, to get a better view and have his snack in relative calmness. Just him, the banana and the wind. That sounds quiet, Paul. Are you sure you need so much silence? Ran through his mind, however, the boy chose to realize the plan anyway. He caught the lowest branch with his right hand, the trunk with the left, then put his foot on a protrusion in the tree trunk, and pulled himself up. He did so again and again, till he stopped climbing to sit on a thick branch, not far away from the trunk. Then, he took the banana and started unpeeling it.

Looking around, he found out that the place was ideal.

It had been a long day. Thankfully not a disastrous one, but a long one nonetheless. Spring was in full bloom, and that meant he had way better stuff to do than sit inside with his head in a book. Being outside flying, climbing, or just simply rolling around on the grass sounded loads better to him. Sadly he was weighed down by a conscience that would never let him skip just for the fun of it.

So he stuck it out. Lesson after lesson, and it got increasingly harder to focus where he should. He was saved from making yet another disaster in potions by them revising, but that was the very best he could say about this day. Finally lunch came, and with it a much needed break. He did not miss a moment before tearing off his school robe and shoving it in his bag. The weather was far too nice to be dressed in a color as stuffy as black. Now dressed in a comfy jumper and pants, he wasted no time in heading outside.

He stopped for long enough to grab an apple from the great hall, but then he sprinted until he could close his eyes and draw that anticipated breath of fresh air. The weather was nice, and the temperature just right for the jumper he had put on that morning.

He skipped a bit as he moved across the grounds. It almost made him laugh. He could skip anywhere of course, but it being a nice day in early May boosted his mood. He threw his hands out as he ran the last couple of steps before halting before a large tree. He had been eyeing that one for a while, and it was simply begging to be climbed.

Sizing up the tree, trying to decide what path to climb, he failed to notice the boy already sitting in it. Maybe his mother was right too that his ears were full of wax, because not a sound alerted him to it. Biting into the apple, he took a hold of the lowest branch with both hands and jumped up.

He managed to get both feet and arms around the branch so he was hanging upside down. That was when he spotted Paul. Naturally, it caught him by surprise. He managed a sound that if not for the apple filling his mouth would probably have been something like «Oh!» or something similar. It ended coming out as more of a grunt. That was not the end of surprises either, as he flung out his arms on instinct, and dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes.

He groaned for a moment as he lay there, trying to get it all connected in his brain. Finally, he spat out the apple and sat up. He had barely fallen half a metre, so he knew even before checking that he would be just fine. He rolled his head a bit still, just to make sure, before looking up at the fellow lion. «Hey, nice spot you got there! Bet it’s a nice view of… things.» His tone started innocently enough, but ended in a laugh. He was never too wounded in pride that he couldn’t laugh at himself.

Paul was watching the scenes of his surroundings with interest and amusement even, in some cases. There was group by the lake, skipping stones over the water surface. For a moment, he considered climbing down and joining them. But he had a more important thing to do, which was having a snack. So he took the banana and unpeeled it, taking a bite.

Looking to his right, there were several groups, running and sitting on the ground near the greenhouses. Some people, whom he saw in certain moments in the holes between the branches above his head when looking up, were flying around and doing tricks on the slow, yet safe, borrowed school brooms. On his left, there were some people taking a walk or running. There were also some older students who were sitting on the grass, reading books.

No wonder they're reading. They're doing the exams next year. Hm, I and Cor'll also have to study like that when it's our seventh year. Whatever the name of the exams, they're surely bloody difficult... The boy sighed, still thinking. Dammit, I'll die. I can totally see it - Cor will be fine, getting all Os, even in Transfig, which is super difficult, but me... shame. And if he didn't fall down to the Earth's nucleus, because of the shame of his final exams results, his parents killed him. What a nice grave text. Thought the boy bitterly, rather shaking his head, pushing the thoughts away.

Come on, Paul. You've still got plenty of time! Enjoy it!

So he did. He spotted Max whom he'd just wanted to greet. The boy wasn't paying attention though. Eh, should I... say something? I dunno. If he isn't paying attention, he might get scared, and I really don't want that. He took another bite of the banana, watching the performance that Max threw.

"Whoa... bravo. Ten outta ten!" Paul started clapping, grinning

Paul spoke up teasingly, with a grin on his face, as Max was hanging head-down from the tree branch. As he fell down with a loud thump, a worried expression appeared on Paul's face. He even stood up on one of the branches below his feet, to check if all was good with the boy and no further intervention would be necessary from Paul's side. Fortunately, it wasn't, for Max started laughing. Paul barked out a laugh too.

"Whoa, graceful as a herd of gnu, aren't ya at times, lad?" Joked the boy, grinning.

«Hey, nice spot you got there! Bet it’s a nice view of… things.»

Paul nodded, smirking. "Yes, totally worth it. Ten out of ten."
Did he make a joke at his fall. Then, he finished the banana and climbed down with a grace of an athlete, to stand opposite to Max. Throwing the banana peel to the ground, Paul drew his wand and casted an: "Incendio!" at it.

Then, he watched as the flames reduced it to a tiny pile of ash. It wasn't till then that he offered to Max: "Wanna have the honour of being the firefighter?" He jerked his head towards the burning banana peel, giving Max the opportunity to extinguish it.

"Hope ya can do it? The Extinguishing charm, I mean." In his eyes, flashed a spark of challenge, as if he wasn't asking the taller boy if he had the ability to do it, but if he ever tried doing it. Hm, was he at the ball? If he was, then he did for sure. But I can't say whether he was there or not, didn't notice him.

Max was never one to take himself too seriously. What fun was there if he couldn’t laugh at himself sometimes? He could get embarrassed like any other person, but he saw the importance in putting others at ease by sharing humor. The fall hadn’t been hard, and so he laughed as soon as he spit out the apple. It wasn’t just that he fell, but also that he could see laughter bubbling up in the fellow first year. So he laughed and quipped. He bet the sight had been hilarious.

«What do you mean, I’m always the picture of elegance!» He didn’t quite manage to fake an expression of being offended before he cracked up laughing yet again. «But I’ll take the points, Merlin knows I can use them!»

He slowly climbed to his feet as Paul climbed down and set the peel aflame. He knew his face and name, it would be strange if he didn’t. They shared a house, classes, even a dorm. Max wasn’t the best at recognizing people, but he had thankfully noticed through the year that he didn’t forget indefinitely.

He was offered to be the one to put out the fire, and it made him pause. Those spells were always mixed up in his head, which of them that did what. At the ball, Jules had been there yelling the incantation in his ear when they put out the gazebo. Paul had just used the other. So he knew incendio wasn’t the one he was after. That didn’t change the fact that he could never quite remember the right incantation. Exting… something. He hesitated a bit before he drew his wand slowly. Remembering that fake confidence was still confidence, he straightened with an attitude. «Yeah… sure!» He aimed at what was now a burning patch of grass, and aimed. Thoughts spinning in his head, he only hoped he was right. «Extinguo!» Thankfully he got lucky on the first guess, and the fire fizzled out.

Shoving his wand back in his pocket he dragged a hand through his hair. «So… what were you doing up in that tree?» He aired the question after a moment of silence. Climbing trees wasn’t that unusual, at least not for him. He liked the view, but even more he enjoyed the challenge of the climb. «Do you do that often?»

Paul smirked and chuckled along with Max, at both the memory of the fall, which was still vivid in his mind, and his consequent words. "Of course, of course... elephants are elegant too, just profoundly misunderstood." Joked the boy, sticking his tongue out at him, before cracking another grin.

As the points were mentioned, Paul pursed his lips, nodding. That topic managed to change his mood temporarily, from mischievous to serious, or sad even. "Well, not just you, but all Gryffindor." Sighed the boy, shaking his head and stitching his eyebrows. "Have ya checked the scores this month? Slytherins are surely gonna beat us! Unbelievable."

When Max chose to extinguish the fire, Paul watched him perform a successful Extinguo. "Good. Now, the ashes..." Turner nodded as Max finished, collecting the ash that was left after the peel into a glass bottle, the one in which he carried Flobby with Sky and El. "Handy stuff. Grandma said they can be used to fertilize plants, so... if ya grow any, be my guest." An offer was made by the shorter Gryffindor, for him to take some of the ashes, in case he needed them.

I can't remember whether he's got any plants in the dorm. Well, perhaps, you could spend more time there, Paul. Thought the boy.

"Hm... sad. I don't even know which subjects you're interested in. We've not really got to speak yet. Which is sad, as it's May already." Spoke the boy in a reflective, perhaps a little reproaching manner. "We should really spend more time in the dorm..."

«So… what were you doing up in that tree?»

"Chilling, mainly. Also, having a snack, as you could see." Rambled the boy. "And watching people doing stuff. It's fun. I do it every now and then." Shrugged the boy. "Ya know what's the funniest though? Climbing." The boy came up with another crooked smile, looking around. An idea sprang in his mind, so he thought about it for a moment. Hm, it would be interesting to have a climbing race! Is there another... oh yes, another tree right there!

"Uhm... how about we do a climbing race?" Sparks of excitement appeared in his eyes, as the boy suggested yet another competition. "The slower one.. say... does a dare the faster one comes up with!"

Love the race! Feel free to godmod Paul winning if you want. Max is such a poor loser, and I love writing it!

At the mention of the quidditch cup, Max’s expression soured a bit as well. «Yeah… No question we won’t win the cup this year. Have you seen the monster of a team Ravenclaw’s got? Makes me sort of glad at least a few of them are graduating.» He shrugged a bit, trying to add a cheeky grin at the end. «And Slytherin is though to beat, but I reckon we have a fair chance. So hopefully we won’t end up dead last» That would be embarrassing. He had followed the games since he’d arrived at school, and done his best to join the team since new years. Still, as a first year, he knew he didn’t have much against the older players.

Talk of sports turned to his favorite topic, Herbology. He nodded along to Pauls words. He would have buried the peel raw instead of burning it. Let it compost on its own, and the plant to have free reign of the nutrients. But he supposed that the ashes had to contain at least a bit of them. «Oh, yeah!» He patted down his pockets, knowing very well that he didn’t carry any vials but feeling the need to check anyways. «I suppose I could just…» He stared at the ashes for a moment before reaching his decision. He bent over and grabbed a hefty handful, before shoving it in the front pocket of his trousers. He didn’t keep any plants in the dorm. If he did, there would be no place left to sleep. He was never any good at making selections. «I’m sure the plants in the greenhouse will love it!» He nodded assuredly. He spent time there nearly every day after all.

«Yeah, we haven’t really talked. And that with the year almost being over already!» He agreed with a nod. Having shoved ashes in his pockets, he pulled out his hands and did his best to brush them off. First against each other, and when that didn’t work he resorted to wiping them on his trousers. «You spotted me pretty well with the ashes though! There is no better than Herbology.» His mind drifted off for a moment, trying to complete a short list of exactly why he liked it, before he remembered that the polite thing was to return the question. «But what about you?»

The topic drifted once again, this time to something more exciting. A cheeky grin spread across his face at the mention of a race. «Think you could take me on, yeah?» He joked, before looking around. Paul would have an advantage with them using the tree he had just climbed, and so they needed another. Yes, just there! Not far either, probably a couple of meters between the branches of the trees. «I am so down for that bet too! How about you climb that one, and I climb this one?» He suggested. If Paul agreed, he would turn to the tree mapping the quickest route to the top while the other Gryffindor got into start-position. «Ready? Okay. Ready, set, GO!» The last word was straight up yelled before he grabbed the lowest branch.

As Max spoke about the Quidditch Cup, Paul pursed his lips, nodding here and there.

«Makes me sort of glad at least a few of them are graduating.»

"My... is it that bad really? I've only met a couple of them so far, at the events. Don't even know if they're in the Quidditch team. Hm..." Paul rubbed his chin thoughtfully, likely trying to remember the names of the Ravies he met. "One of them was Cassie... d'now her surname. She won something on the spring ball, if I remember it correctly. Also, Marci! She's good at duelling. We were in the same team in capture the flag. We lost, but it was exciting anyway... And some of them I probably met in Tatiana's unofficial Quidditch match. But we didn't really... eh, have the time to introduce ourselves, ya know." Paul grinned nostalgically, sighing and shaking his head. Speaking of Marci... haven't spoken to her for months. Have to fix that, she's cool! Ran through his mind.

Paul guessed there was a fair chance of Gryffindor ending up last. Last but not least! We might be experiencing slight downs, but we'll surely fix that soon! There's a lot of us who are good at Duelling, Quidditch and Broom racing. Just a little more luck and we'll shine bright like stars! Thought the boy. "I suppose we're left to support and cheer for one another in the matches and races. They probably just need more encouragement." The boy provided his rationale of the problem.

«I’m sure the plants in the greenhouse will love it!»

Paul smiled, watching him stuff the ashes into his pockets. He came up with a worried expression, as he wasn't sure he'd ever seen anyone carrying ash in their pockets. Wait, does he think he can carry the powder in his pocket? I don't think it will survive the journey back to the castle for the least... Thought the shorter Gryffindor. "Mate, come on. You can't carry it like that..." Paul notioned to his pocket, narrowing his eyes. "You'll drop it whenever ya start movin'. There has to be another way. Isn't there a spell you could use?"

«...There is no better than Herbology.»

Paul's eyes widened and sparks of excitement ran through them yet again. "Herbology? Whoa, wouldn't have guessed that." Giggled Turner. "I thought your fave was Flying. You emit a... Flying vibe."

As Max asked him about his favourite subject, Paul groaned. All the magical subjects were great, Herbology included. In it, they learned the Fire-making spell and the Fire-extinguishing charm too, after all, which were ones of the most useful. Herbology isn't any less interesting. Just not my style, to grow plants and take care of them, ran through his mind. "Well, I prefer animals to plants. Can't wait for the subject... what's its name... uhm... ya know, taking care of magical animals and such. Speaking of animals, haven't noticed any pets 'round the dorm. Have ya got any?" Asked the boy.

As the talk came to the climbing race, Paul's eyes sparked again, this time with pure challenge.

«Think you could take me on, yeah?»

"Tsh, of course!" Did the boy claim cockily. "Naturally, elephants aren't really known for their overwhelming climbing skills." Paul grinned, noddng, as Max suggested that Paul move to another tree. Then, he ran off towards the "new" tree, also checking it out.

Hm, the branches are quite high, but the trunk is curved. If I climb this lower part of the trunk, I'll reach the lower branches first near the trunk, hang on that branch on the right, then walk up the trunk and pull up. I'll stand up on the branch on the right, which will get me to the crown of the tree. Yeah, I've got a chance to win here! Schemed the boy.

As Max counted, Paul wiped his stress sweaty hands into his pants on his sides. He placed both hands on the trunk after Max's GO. Then he jumped onto it like a monkey, trying to push himself up, as if he were on a climbing rope or a climbing pole.
