“It might have something to do with the schools structure. I’m sure if they torn this place down or blocked it off something would happen. Then again how would I know.” She shrugged her shoulders.

Like Wyatt she too was a parselmouth and only recently had she followed the voices that called to her into the Chamber of Secrets. She knew little about the room and her abilities neither did she know what it meant for her. And because of this she was terrified of her ability. If her family still lived in Iceland it wouldn’t be a problem since there are no snakes there. However, snakes commonly appeared in their backyard back home in Wales.

“If we asked the teachers I’m sure they’d be suspicious. But I’m sure they know students come in and out of here, if they didn’t that would be poor student management wouldn’t it?” She tilted her head to Wyatt, his face was plain but she feel that something was there. Something he didn’t quite want her know- at least not yet.

People here seemed to be so secretive but it wasn’t like Adlai had secrets of her own now. Though she hated those secrets with every fiber of her being. All she wanted was to be an open book no matter how dangerous that may be for her in the long run. At least her life would be a bit more simple that way.

“I’m not sure they do know, honestly. I don’t think they can wrap their brains around pre-teens and teenagers voluntarily visiting a place like this, but I can’t blame them for being so ignorant. This place is truly disgusting.”

There was mold, toilet water, and broken glass everywhere. It’s the opposite of a place someone would think a stereotypical teen would voluntarily hand out. It was sketchy here, though. The older kids often came to the Abandoned Toilets just to make out without the fear of professors catching them. Hell, Wyatt didn’t even want to be here? What was to like? It was plainly disgusting, and since he found the Chamber of Secrets, he’d been hiding out there a lot instead, only going into the abandoned lavatory to pass through.

He missed the simplicity of home, and wanted nothing more to be back in Cokeworth, but it wasn’t a possibility. It was either home with the muggle bullies or actually learning something with magical bullies. He chose to learn. When I’m older, he'd tell himself, I’ll show them. The only motivation Wyatt ever had for anything was always revenge. He surprised himself that he didn’t make his parselmouth ability known just so people would leave him alone.

“Hmm...this place isn’t the cleanest but if you look close enough it has its charms.” Adlai said knowing full well that Wyatt probably thought her crazy for it. “For example sometimes the mold makes pretty cool shapes! And when the sun comes in just at the right angle throw the window small rainbows appear around the room!”

Adlai wasn’t always exactly a optimist but for some reason she felt as though with Wyatt she needed to show that more joyful side of her. She felt like if she didn’t he’d sink into the walls of this gloomy place.

At home, before all of this “magic stuff,” Adlai’s life was a lot simpler and had an easy rhythm that she missed. She went home for the winter break life wasn’t the same. Her parents had become more jumpy and her sisters, even though they knew nothing of Adlai’s magical abilities, had become distant to her in way.
On top of everything else her Great Aunt, the woman who convinced her family to move to Wales, was hovering around Adlai like a vulture. Before now her Great Aunt would sneer and scold Adlai for the smallest of things.

Reluctantly Adlai knew nothing would ever be the same and that she would have to find some new kind of rhythm. She would have to find her new normal. But that would take time and during that time she would have to over come her fears.

“Hmm...this place isn’t the cleanest but if you look close enough it has its charms.”

Wyatt’s eyebrow raised like before. This time, it was a sign of confusion. How close is Adlai looking that she’s somehow able to find this place’s charms?

“For example sometimes the mold makes pretty cool shapes! And when the sun comes in just at the right angle throw the window small rainbows appear around the room!”

The tinge of optimism in her voice was noted and appreciated, but Wyatt questioned the possibility that this is really how she felt about the room. She made her points, which seemed genuine, but Wyatt couldn’t help but think it was just a façade. Optimism is rarer than gold, that’s what his father used to say. Then again, why should he trust anything his father says.

“I’m not so sure. If you have to really look, or if you really have to think about it, is it truly beautiful?”

The sentence sounded like a genuine question he was asking, though he said it absent-mindedly, staring out ahead of himself instead of at Adlai. The words had more emotion in them than anything he’d said to Adlai yet, though it wasn’t a lot. He noticed what he’d drifted off and done, and fixed his face back to its emotionless mask, really hoping Adlai didn’t notice. I’m being so dramatic, he thought to himself.

“I just mean… something really beautiful, you take one look and you see it. As if there’s just something there that makes it worthy at first glance. Then it’s truly ‘charming’.”

The monotone voice was back.

“Well obviously you don’t see the beauty of this place at first glance. You have to spend time here and get to know its ins and outs, kind of like people. Noticeably there are pretty people but some of those pretty people aren’t pretty at all, at least not on the inside. And of course there are, not so pretty people, who are actually pretty on the inside. So I guess in the end it all depends on how much attention you pay to things and how you think you about it.” She said as she rested her head on her knees and looked up at Wyatt.

“Then again, I may be entirely wrong. The world does seem to be changing a lot, at least for me.” As listened to Wyatt as he spoke, for a moment there was something there- a dim spark that was shortly stomped out. “What do you think, Wyatt?” She asked knowing she may be overstepping some kind of unknown boundary he has put up between them. But Adlai had never known boundaries, all she knew (or what she thought she knew) is that there was something Wyatt had inside of him that needed to be set free.

“Then again, I may be entirely wrong. The world does seem to be changing a lot, at least for me. What do you think, Wyatt?”

Well, that was different. Wyatt didn’t think he’d ever heard “what do you think” and “Wyatt” in the same sentence more than two times maybe his entire life.

“Everyone in this school is somewhere between 11-18, of course the world is changing for us. That’s what being our age is.” Hearing himself speak, Wyatt thought his tone was a little too dismissive, but every time he’d said something even blatantly mean to Adlai, she’d barely noticed. He assumed this time would be no different. “I don’t think things are going to stop changing for a very long time,” he said with a sigh.

Wyatt wasn’t a big fan of change, could you have guessed? It was just always difficult for Wyatt to adapt to new environments or ideas. He’s pretty open-minded, but if you introduce something new, he’s not so flexible.

Wyatt wasn’t a big fan of death, either, another sort of change. Once, he had a fish, and it didn’t really end well. The fish died after four years of life. The length of its life was a wonder to Wyatt's mother, who didn’t even know a fish could last that long. Though, Wyatt was surprised that the fish died at all rather than how long it lived. It was the first time he found out things die. They’d gotten the fish when Wyatt was two, and his mother named it Reggie. When Reggie died, Wyatt mourned for an entire year before being able to adapt to life without a fish. He didn’t like that story.

“That is true.” Adlai said as she proceeded to rest her head on her arm, but still facing Wyatt. Change seemed to be a common theme with everyone here, especially for first years like her. It was terrifying. There was so much that she didn’t want to have change.

She didn’t want to lose the friendships she had made at home, or the friendships she had made here at Hogwarts. She didn’t wasn’t her sisters to become even for reclusive with her. She didn’t want her mother and father to be worried all the time anymore. There were a lot of things she didn’t want. But nonetheless they were happening.

But sometimes good could come out of it. She didn’t want to get lost today, but she did, and she met Wyatt because of it which seemed to be a good thing. Perhaps she’s made a new friend. She seemed to know a lot of Slytherin’s for some reason. She barely talked to anyone in her own house, except for Leah, then again she hadn’t seen her in a while, not even in class which was some what worrisome. Then again Leah always seemed to be up to something no matter how outrageous.

“That is true.”

Wyatt sighed. He was drained from the small conversation. All he wanted was to be alone, and now there was this Hufflepuff in his hideout. It definitely could be worse. Adlai was very nice, and she seemed pretty smart, too, but Wyatt didn’t want a kind, calming presence to talk to. He wanted space.

“I’m going to go. Thank you for not being awful.” It was a compliment that was very hard to give out, since most of the children at this school were not very great. Most of them were brats and bastards, so genuinely kind people like Adlai were rare.

He felt pretty terrible to leave so abruptly, but he was simply exhausted. It was nearing curfew, anyway, wasn’t it? He’d stayed in the Abandoned Toilets while dinner was going on in the great hall, so it should be.

The Snake stood up. He didn’t offer his hand to Adlai to help her up. Wyatt assumed the girl would want to stay, since she’d gone to the lavatory to rest her legs. Picking his wand up from the ground, he casted Alohomora on the door he’d previously locked to lean against.

“Hopefully, I’ll see you again somewhere less disgusting.” With that, Wyatt left.

I'm so sorry if you don't want the thread to end, but I think we're both losing interest. I love Adlai's character, and if you want to start another thread, I'm so down, but I'm swamped with a million other threads, and I'm just trying to get through all of them.

Leaving the thread.
