For a few seconds, no words came out of Hanako’s mouth. Nor thoughts that were loud enough to overcome his shook.

I-” He managed to mutter but still he was having an extremely difficult time finding any words to react to this situation.

He just couldn’t.

What was he supposed to say?

Just who was this guy? Why hasn’t he pulled out his wand? Why was he still sitting there? He didn’t even look a little bit angry! Was he blind or something? Did his sensory neurons broke that he couldn’t feel the sticky pumpkin juice all over him?! No- he took out a napkin to wipe his face-off, but why did Hanako’s health anything to do with this? How in heaven did anything happening at the moment could even make him wonder is Hanako was okay?!

He had never been this speechless in front of strangers like this. Chatty suited the boy more ever since he was young. An answer or a retort was always quick-witted and easy to convey to anything that came at him.

But why had that one question got him speechless?

Somehow the ability to think of witty comebacks wasn’t working. Sarcasm was instantly replaced with logic. Him? Logic? What was the answer?

Is he okay?

Why didn’t he know?

For a second his parents came to mind and his heart ached. Why had they never called? It’s been literal years and he sometimes sees his father on the news but that was the end of their interaction. How long has it been? Two? Three years? Voices. He can’t remember what they sounded like. That’s how long they haven’t interacted. It was as if they didn’t want to talk to him. Do they?

His siblings came to mind next. Their adorable faces when Hanako pretended to be a fool to get a rise out of them and they went on and blabbered about whatever facts they knew. They were also the only ones that got letters from their parents, congratulating them on their recent grades. Why was that?

Was he really okay?

It was a bit too late to realize his eyes had started to water a while ago. But he wasn’t focused on that. Instead, he was confused about the newfound trembling rage that he was felling. His fist had curled into a tight fist and the taste of iron enveloped his tongue with his check biting and the face he showed.

It was entirely different than the faces he was used to making. It was pure rage. And it was real. Possibly a kind of ‘real’ that you would never expect from such a distant boy like him.

Without thinking he slammed the table with so much force that the table trembled. His fist- not used to using such force- turned red and possibly bruised but that was the last thing concerning Hanako at the moment.

YOU’RE THE ONE THAT NEEDS HELP! “ his throat burned from the screaming directed at Vanes. At this point, tears were starting to spill before he could stop them and people had turned their attention to the commotion but they feel on death ears. “ IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT! YOURS! YOU’RE THE PROBLEM HERE! IF IT WERENT FOR YOU I’D-” he couldn’t continue as he felt a lump form in his throat preventing him from wailing any further. He released the tension in his fist and looked away. Why was he even screaming? What had Vanes said that made him explode like that.

And the worst part about his tantrum was that he didn’t even know if what he said was supposed to be for Vanes, his family, or him.

Unable to take this anymore, he shot a last glare at Vanes. His face was now stained with tears and traces of the impish child a few seconds before vanished. He still looked like he wanted to punch the senior but it was softer than before.

And frankly, it looked exhausted. Af if the fiery rage before had dwindled and extinguished.

You…” his voice was dry now. Barely a whisper that Alan might have to lean in to listen. “ I hate you “. That flew out of his mouth before he could stop them but the honest malice laced in that statement scared Hanako. As he still, wasn’t sure if he was talking to Vanes or a mirror.

He was tired. He didn’t even care if he was just taking out his frustration on Vanes and still could not answer his question. Not wanting to embarrass himself more, he used the sleeves of his uniform and wiped his face and stood up.

Without looking back, he made a run to the exit.

Whatever happened back there, Hanako wanted to forget it ever happened. But he couldn't help but wonder when was the last time someone asked if he was alright.

The third years eyes widened as he stared at the kid in shock. What was wrong now? What happened to push the other kid over the edge to make him get so loud and storm away? Alan had never even mentioned that the other kid required help and what was supposed to be his fault? Alan was at a loss and could do nothing but stare after the student in confusion and worry. Had Alan said something that upset him? Sure asking him whether he was alright for spilling pumpkin juice over him might not have been the best course of action, he could have just ignored it happening at all... but this? Alan slowly shook his head and got up from his place at the Gryffindor table. He could feel the sticky pumpkin juice in his hair and covering his skin as the sweet smell of it filled his nose; the third year was in desperate need of a shower now.

He abandoned his plate that disappeared by the house elves work and left the great hall so that he could make his way towards the dorms. All the way his mind was riddled with thoughts about that very odd encounter. It had been weird start to finish in his opinion and he had no idea as to why that was the case. He also felt a bit bad for the other kid as he looked really upset by the end of their conversation for reasons Alan could not fathom. Perhaps he would meet the other kid again one day and could make more sense out of the situation. For now he had other things to worry about, like the essays that were due the next morning. What a weird day...
