High stacks of books, neatly arranged around the perimeter of the table like a mighty fortress of knowledge formed a cosy boundary just right for two hyperactive boys to get some serious studying done! After all, towards the end of their fifth year, Colin and Liam would be writing their OWL exams and they still had regular class work to accomplish. Plus, they had other areas of interest that required roaming the library for study materials. As usual, the twins sat together on one side of the table, Colin on the Liam's left and Liam on Colin's right.

The reason for this shall soon become apparent.

Colin propped his Astronomy text up on the short stack of books on geometry and trigonometry. Liam had his similarly propped up on History of Magic and Runes. Stacks of parchments with notes and scribbles were scattered about. Notebooks open to various pages lay haphazardly on top. Among the usual chaos of school notes, there were also a tattered and ancient journal, its comfortably worn leather binding repaired so that few would know it had once been torn in half, lay open to some interesting notes on wolfsbane written by an ancestral Colin and Liam. There was also a small notebook with only the stylised image of two wolves drawn on the cover.

Colin sighed.

His parchment was tilted to an awkward angle and his body contorted as his left hand scritched across the surface, copying and arranging notes in a more sensible manner whilst trying not blob ink all over his notes, his hands, his face. It did little good. Colin sat back in the heavy wooden chair and rubbed his nose. "Honestly, why can't someone invent a quill for left handers!?" he asked in exasperation. Looking down at his notes, he found only a few smudges of ink. He glanced over towards Liam's neat and perfect script. "Maybe I should write everything the right way around!"

Colin tried writing a few lines of notes right to left. It was as uncomfortable as writing left to right, but at least he didn't have to curl his arm around and try not to smudge all over the place. He sat back in his chair again. Liam looked over onto Colin's page. "That's very clever, lad! You do realise that they do actually make lefty quills, right? I mean. I told ye all aboot them in first year!"

"Wait," said Colin, turning to face Liam. "Wh--- What are ye talking aboot. Ye never said---. Wait. What's this with yer robes? Gryff? Wait. Wait! Are ye dating a DORQUE, Liam!?!?"

Liam rolled his eyes, but completely evaded Colin's question. "Oh I did tell ye all aboot left handed quills! Remember when we were in Flourish and Blotts? I mentioned them then! And even Scrivenshaft have them, though they are a bit pricey!" Liam said smiling.

"When did this happen?" asked Colin. He wracked his brain for any least memory of talking about left handed quills with Liam. He could come up with absolutely nothing!

"Oh! Twas first year! Remember? Seanmamó took us there to try out some proper quills, after we'd gotten our first Hogwarts books! I think I've still got mine. Just a regular anti cheating quill, like I'd ever cheat on an exam!" Liam rolled his eyes. "By the way, did ye know lad? Ye've got a great long smudge of ink all across yer nose?"

"I--- Don't try to distract me Liam McCoire! I've got to know more about these quills!"

Liam smirked. "Oh, I wasn't even trying to distract thee, Cail! All I have to do is mention Emily and ---"

Liam paused.

Liam smiled.

Colin blinked and shook his head.

"What? Why are smiling that way Liam?" Colin asked.

"Oh, nothing, lad! Ye just had that dilated pupils, zoned out, and far away look ye get when ye're daydreaming about <3  Emmi  <3 !" Liam snorted. "Ye're very cute when ye're on about Emmi, ye know? Honestly Cail, when are you going to ask that girl out proper? She's smart. Smarter than you anyway! And gorgeous! Even Cursa has written me asking me to prod ye along! Ye've been swooning over that Hufflepuff for almost a year now! And ye still haven't told her you love her! I mean. That is impressive. Ye took Casey's admonition to heart. But lad. Ye're going to explode if you keep this in much longer!"

Colin nodded. He had been defeated. He had become totally distracted by his smirking twin. He really did need to get himself together and ask Emmi proper like. He glanced away from Liam. He saw two girls enter the library. "Pfft. Don't look now, lad. Super annoyance dead ahead!" Liam looked up from his notes. Yep. It was them. Those silly girls that always got in the way in the corridors last year! MeyJun, Colin called the inseparable pair. The pair had turned out to be wolves, and so actually became known to Colin as more than a mere obstacle to be dealt with.

"I think they're headed this direction? Whatever! They're probably still trying to learn lumos and are looking for a beginners spell book!" Liam sniggered. Colin snorted.

"Liam McCoire! I'm sure they've moved beyond lumos by now!"

"I don't even know why I'm putting myself in this position...couldn't this be much easier? Why those two...from everyone else?" Meyra muttered softly, in a plaintive murmur that only her cousin Jun could hear.

The library was as busy with students as usual. Whispered words could be heard, the tips of quills scratching the parchment in faster and slower cadences, occasional yawns escaping the most tired and defeated ones, and the sound of the turning of pages. Meyra didn't dislike being in that space among the tall, endless bookshelves. The library had always conveyed tranquility to her, and there was a certain welcoming feeling in that sanctuary of knowledge. Books had always been her friends and pleasant companions, so it was like finding, within that ancient castle, a place of retreat that made her feel more at home.

But today, the young Gryffindor wasn't wandering through the maze of bookshelves to find a place of privacy and comfort among them. Today, she was there with Jun to somehow track down those two troglodyte twins with pale blond hair. And the reason behind this ambush seemed completely taken from an extremely poorly written story whose author had a terrible sense of humor.

After searching for a few minutes, Meyra's eyes finally located the tops of two heads with disheveled hair so light it seemed whiter reflecting the light coming from the tall windows. She gave a slight tug on the sleeve of Jun's robe and pointed to the last table in the corridor where both McCoires seemed to be hiding behind piles of books, parchments, and notebooks. "Incredible... don't tell me they actually study?" Meyra asked sarcastically, "I would have never guessed..." The young Gryffindor exchanged an amused glance with her best friend, a look that slowly transformed into something more serious, revealing the nervousness that lay dormant within her. "Wish me luck, Jun!" She said to her cousin before continuing on her way, her confident steps leading her to the table where the two brothers were sitting.

As soon as she reached them, her first impulse was to push one of the stacks of books and let them tumble down on top of them. She even felt a slight tingling in her fingers as she suppressed this impulse. But the reason she had approached the two trolls wouldn't exactly work in her favor if she behaved the way they truly deserved. So, in order to restrain herself while still demonstrating how unimpressed she had always felt around them, Meyra crossed her arms over her chest and cleared her throat, drawing the attention of both twins, giving them her most nonchalant greeting.

"I need to ask you something important." She began bluntly, her green eyes dancing between theirs, both pairs looking terrifying, and increasingly familiar. "Do you know someone named Moray McCoire?" She asked, trying to keep her expression neutral so they couldn't read any of the emotions piled up inside her. It was ridiculous, but that question made her feel as if the answer placed her between life and death, and the wait for clarification of her doubts was simply unnerving. In fact, it wasn't about the reality of life and death, but it was as if she found herself in an abyss from which the answer would never allow her to turn back, and the fear of regret was real and...worse...inevitable.

Jun swerved slightly to avoid a collision with a very stressed seeming first year. She had to suppress a small smile at that and the words her cousin quietly said when Jun was right beside her again. Though the situation technically wasn’t a topic that Jun found very amusing. Colin and Liam McCoire weren’t students she had ever looked for to interact with, they simply always popped up everywhere and now they had popped up in the middle of family business.

Honestly, I cannot phantom why these two are always involved in everything. Especially this. How is that even possible?“ Jun mumbled in return. „Though I fear there is no easier way for this,“ she then added with a sigh and looked from the other students around them to her cousin. The Ravenclaw sent her cousin a sympathetic soft smile before focusing back at the task at hand.

In Jun‘s opinion, there was no actual use in searching for the fifth year twins in the library because she was sure they were never here. This was a place of peace and quiet most times and not of mayhem and mischief. Which was precisely why Jun liked being here when she could. Sometimes it reminded her of evenings spend in their library at home, when her father would sit on one of the sofas with her and read to her. He’d brush her hair to the side as the rain tapped against the window and when Jun was in the Hogwarts library, at times she could almost imagine him beside her as she studied.

The cousins had been looking for a couple minutes, though Jun wasn’t really looking but rather thinking about what idiot reply the two would have when they did find them. When Mey stopped and gently pulled on the sleeve of Jun‘s robe, the Ravenclaw stopped abruptly as to not walk right into her best friend. Jun‘s gaze lifted and traveled over to where Mey was looking, catching sight of the two troublemakers. Colin and Liam were sitting between books and parchment, that was surely filled with messy scribbles, talking agitatedly. Or well, in the way they always spoke to each other.

I don’t think there is an actual useful word on those parchments, so I don’t know whether you can call that studying..“ Jun snorted softly in return to Mey‘s words and mirrored that amused gaze. Then Mey told her to wish her luck and Jun looked back at her. Liam and Colin had apparently noticed them by now and it didn’t sit quite right with her that Mey needed to talk to them about this.. sensitive topic now.

Alright… good luck, I’ll be right over there if you need me“ she told Mey and watched her friend go. While Mey moved closer to the twins, Jun made a beeline towards the closest shelf and picked up a random book on Runes. She didn’t really look into it, but looked over at her cousin instead. She had approached them and was standing right with them now. If Jun concentrated enough, she could hear them from this distance. At Mey‘s immediate question, Jun tensed slightly and gripped the book in her hands harder. If they did know him, where would this even lead? Without another thought, Jun had overhauled her plans of keeping her distance and was right beside her best friend in just a few steps. If there was anything that was for sure in this situation, it was that Mey and Jun never let each other go through things alone. Especially not life changing ones.

Colin watched as the twin girls approached. Sus. They were whispering something together as they approached. "Probably up to no good," Colin muttered. He caught the words parchment and study. He glanced over at Liam. "Maybe they don't want to disturb us? We are studying after all!"

Liam rolled his eyes. "Right? Wait til those two lazy lassies get to tackle OWLs!"

One of the twins paused whilst the other came closer. Clearly they weren't going to get any peace from the troublesome duo today. It's like they were being stalked! Ever since they showed up at Hogwarts, Colin felt like they were two pairs of those peanut butter mugs the Muggles have. They were actually quite delicious! Two things that really tasted good, tasted better together!

Wait.

Colin wondered how that random thought could possibly apply here and now! He watched as Jun approached. Or was it Mey? He always got the names switched! Ever since they first came to Hogwarts, the girls were always together. Fair, since Colin and Liam were always together too! But unlike Colin and Liam, these two, this MeyAndJun, were always in the way! In the great hall, in the corridors, on the stairs, in the Shrieking Shack, it didn't matter. As sure as the lads turned a corner or tried to play a game of hallway hurling, these two were sure to be found, scowling like two old haglets!

The boys leaned back into their chairs once the girl got close. And then the other one decided to show up. Colin's gaze flicked from the green eyes to the brown. There was something in the lass's eyes. Not fear. She was a Wolf after all! Maybe some nervousness. Colin had the feeling they weren't going to ask for an interview for a Headliner article or anything simple like that. She had the look about her of asking something serious.

Colin smirked.

Perhaps they wanted Colin and Liam to find them dates for some upcoming event? His mind immediately turned to Finn ConnER. That would bloody brilliant! Hogwart's Most Annoying Girl and Hogwart's Most Likely to Die Locked in a Closet. But when she started speaking, Colin sat up straight. It was not at all the sort of question he was expecting! His eyes widened.

"I need to ask you something important." The bloody cheek. Didn't even bother to say hello! Poor girl looked so anxious! Maybe she did want to contact some sad, unlucky Slytherin lad for a date and was being all shy about it! "Do you know someone named Moray McCoire?" she asked. Those words undid any lighthearted reply he might give. Moray McCoire.

Colin turned to look in wonder at Liam.

Liam turned a questioning gaze at Colin.

The question wasn't did Colin and Liam know Moray McCoire. The real question was how did MayAndJun Whatstheirnames know Moray McCoire! Uncle Moray? He tried to think how many Morays there were in the family anyway. He could only think of the one. But --- how could this kid have pulled this name out of her pointed cap? Seriously? The two boys turned back to inspect the girls more closely. One of them was a Gryffindorque, and the other a Ravenclown. Between them both, they could probably just about pull off a stunt to prank the boys. Colin thought it might just be possible that Liam had accidentally let slip the name whilst writing a letter in his common room or something. And then the two girls sorted out some kind of loopy plan?

Sus.

Colin's heart said no. They were both acting too innocent. Too sincere. It didn't look like a plot. Didn't smell like a prank. A quick glance towards Liam for confirmation of his own thought before speaking, and then back to the Gryff. He raised his left eyebrow. "Moray McCoire?" He relaxed a bit. There was no way at all MeyAndJun could be spies of Haggy Aggie's, even if the pair of them had the same old grumpy and dour expressions! Colin wouldn't be at all surprised if Alex and Angus were spies. Cursa certainly thought so, but Colin wasn't sure of the connection between dear old cousin Ham-for-Brains Hamish and equally dear old Aunt Hagatha. Except that both were raging gits.

Colin shoved his chair back and slipped Naur-an-Edraith from his sheath. He found a convenient table a few rows along. First years probably. Colin smirked. They both wore that innocent look that Colin knew died in his own eyes even before he came to Hogwarts. For the briefest of moments, he hesitated. One was a brown haired girl with blue eyes. Gryffindor. The other was taller, brown eyed, and darker skinned. Ravenclaw. They needed to learn.

"Perfect! A most excellent time for a teaching moment," he whispered. Liam snorted softly, understanding what was about to transpire. Colin took careful aim, making sure that his casting was tight and well controlled. "Accio!" he whispered excitedly. A muffled squeak and a thump from somewhere under the ancient wooden tables revealed the mayhem! One birb and one lion cub down and two chairs smoothly gliding over towards Colin and Liam's table!

He'd be sure to thank them later, but now there were important things to discuss. Like how on earth did MeyAndJun know about his dad's younger brother? Colin smiled as the chairs came to rest in the nook where Colin & Liam had been studying. Once the girls were situated, he reckoned it was their turn. MeyAndJun apparently did not know who Uncle Moray was; but they did seem to know his name.

As one, the two boys said: "Uncle Moray!" They leaned in close to Mey and Jun. Their voiced lowered to an earnest and conspiratorial level.

"Aye, we know him!" said Colin.

"He's our Da's little brother!" said Liam.

"They were in Hogwarts together!"

"Da and Uncle Colin and---"

"---Uncle Moray and Uncle Morvan---"

"---only Uncle Morvan died. Right out there on the grounds."

"Murdered he was."

"Some wicked kappaface of a professor did it."

"That was all before the big battle at the end of the war."

"That's when Uncle Colin died."

"Right out there on the great staircase."

"Aunt Maureen says they both changed after Hogwarts." Colin and Liam looked at each other. Only a quick eye would catch how they subtly shifted closer to each other. "Best to look out for each other, eh?" Liam whispered.

"Anyway!" Colin continued after a pause. "Ye two are both Wolves so you know about things. I didn't see him during the skirmishes, but Da said he was involved in the fight where Liam was turned."

"Pfft," Liam scowled. "Ould Three Fangs!" The boys chuckled in unison. Colin lifted up the wolf fang necklace that wore around his neck. Colin saw the change in intensity in his brother's eyes. "One day soon, I'm gonna take the other one." Colin nodded approvingly. "A little werewolf dentistry, heheh!" The boys smirked.

"I'm not sure where he lives ---" Colin continued, turning his gaze upward thoughtfully.

"--- not near us anyway ---"

"--- but he told us last summer that the time would come when we would be shown where. How did he call it?"

"A safe place. A sanctuary of some kind. Maybe like magical creatures of some kind?"

Colin shrugged.

Liam shrugged.

"Anyway! Our sister Aoife talks about him quite a bit too." If Colin and Liam leaned in any closer towards Jun and Mey, they'd be nose to nose! "It seems he belongs to some secret organisation. Not sure what kind."

"Must be important, though, the way Aoife's training ye up Cail! She's had a tight leash on ye the last year and a half!"

"ShutitLiam," Colin murmurred. Liam snickered.

Liam looked from one girl's face to the other. "It's true. Cail's a wee bit hyper. If ye hadn't noticed!"

Colin jabbed Liam in the ribs. "So! MeyAndJun! How did ye two find out about Uncle Moray?"

Meyra looked at the two boys, trying to maintain her composure and calm demeanour, not wanting to reveal what she was truly feeling. But the reality was that her feelings were restless, impatient, and gnawing at her from within. The moment of waiting between when her question had been asked, so abruptly, and the time it took for the twins to finally deign to answer her, had truly been an internal struggle against the seething of her temper.

Meyra had always defined herself as a more rational than emotional person, always able to control herself and always finding the most effective way to deal with situations instead of reacting on impulse. But since she had been infected with that damned lupine curse, she had never been the same. So much had changed in her life, so much had altered in her dreams, turning them into vivid nightmares, that it had been impossible to prevent everything else to also change so unapologetically.

She noticed how the expressions on both boys' faces had changed as soon as she mentioned Moray McCoire's name. She saw questions, doubts, uncertainties, and distrust in their eyes. But Meyra didn't dare draw conclusions for herself, preferring to remain silent until one of them decided to break the silence that had settled between the four of them. "Yes, you heard right, Moray McCoire," Meyra repeated when Colin asked, surprised in return. Seeing him relax in his seat next to Liam made her want to push his response, "Do you know him or not?" She asked again, letting a little of her impatience slip into her voice.

As she saw Colin pull his wand from his pocket, her expression intensified into a defensive and questioning look, her hand reflexively reaching for her own wand, which was kept in its holster at her waist. Her fingers touched the handle, but she didn't yet make any move to remove it, preferring to wait and see what the boy would do. Meyra followed Colin's mischievous gaze and, with some astonishment and disbelief, watched as he "stole" two chairs from two first-year students who were studying at a table a short distance away.

Meyra looked at him with reproach in her eyes, "You're such an idiot, McCoire! Seriously?" She reprimanded him, subtly shaking her head in disapproval. "I'm so sorry," She said, addressing the poor young girls, suppressing the urge to cast a spell on Colin herself. If she weren't there for a far more important reason, she would undoubtedly have sent him flying from his own chair and hopefully taken with him all those stacked scrolls, parchments and books he had around him and his brother, as if they were inside a small fortress of knowledge, something that was so at odds with what she thought and knew of them.

The young Gryffindor's eyes briefly scanned the titles and contents of the various drafts and notes scattered across the twins' table. She managed to catch a few things like trigonometry notes, the History of Magic and Runes books, an old, almost crumbling journal with wolfsbane inscriptions, and a small notebook with an image of two wolves on its cover. With that jumble of things, could they really be studying? Or had they simply decided to dump the entire contents of their satchels onto the table, causing a mess around them? Meyra was slightly more inclined to believe the second option, it seemed so typical of them.

But her thoughts were interrupted the second Colin and Liam finally decided to answer her question. And the feeling was as if a rug had been pulled out from under her feet. "Uncle?" she asked them in a mutter, not wanting to believe it. Deep down, she knew it was quite possible, otherwise why would she be there? But receiving that information like that was like a slap in the face. Like a sudden and abrupt pull of her consciousness back to reality, even if it had happen at her own request.

Meyra looked at Jun, almost with a pleading and exasperated gaze, and only then found the strength to react within herself, to let herself sit in one of the chairs that Colin had "arranged" for her and her best friend. The young lioness sat down slowly, as if her movements suddenly weren't her own. Her gaze fixed on Colin and Liam, trying to grasp everything they were saying to her and Jun.

He was their father's younger brother...

Uncle Morvan died on the Hogwarts grounds... murdered... by a professor?

Instinctively, Meyra sought Jun's hand, squeezing it lightly in a gesture that sought to give and receive comfort. All that information filled her and at the same time reopened old wounds.

Uncle Colin also died during the war... the second wizarding war, Meyra figured.

The information kept pouring in, overwhelming her so much that she struggled to keep up with everything they were saying, her mind racing to piece everything together, and her words and reactions took time to catch up. "I'm sorry, Old Three Fang?" she asked, frowning slightly as the two boys shared a laugh, "Who's that...?" Her next question hung in the air, unfinished. Mey's attention was captured by the necklace Colin was now showing them, a wolf fang pendant. The girl's green eyes darted between the necklace and the boys in front of her, trying to make sense of it all, something inside her was telling her that she knew who this Old Three Fang was...

In her mind, suddenly, the only thing she could see was the image of that hideous snout, a set of yellow, bloody fangs, and a pair of amber eyes that gleamed in the moonlight with a murderous, thirsty glow, threatening her life and the lives of Jun and Hoshi. Old Three Fang... did it make sense... somehow? Meyra clenched her fists on her lap, suppressing her memories, trying to send them back into the box where she kept them inside her mind, locking them away for later.

It took her a while to realize that Colin and Liam were no longer talking about the wolf that had transformed them. They were now talking about... a safe place? A sanctuary?...

Suddenly everything made sense again. Yes, she knew of a sanctuary...

When the boys stopped, giving her and Jun the turn to answer, Meyra felt adrift, lost, unsure of what to say, or if she was even capable of uttering coherent sentences. She looked first at Jun, mentally noting that her cousin was there, that she hadn't abandoned her, that she wasn't alone. And making her see through her gaze that the opposite was also true, that she was also there and wouldn't go anywhere unless Jun asked her to.

Meyra swallowed hard, her throat felt like a tight knot, her heart pounding violently against her chest, in a mixture of excitement, acceptance, and loss. Her hands sweated inside her clenched fists, and Meyra still struggled with the remnants of the memories of that night that refused to leave her.

When she finally looked at the twins, her voice sounded strange, even to her own ears. First she had opened her mouth, but no sound had come out. It had taken some effort for her to find her ability to articulate words, "He...he wrote a letter to my mother. He..." Meyra looked at Jun again before continuing to address the boys, "he speaks about that...that Sanctuary you mentioned." She nodded almost imperceptibly, "Apparently he built it with my mother..." Mey's fists clenched so tightly her nails marked her palms, "When...when they were together...or something like that..." She hadn't been able to say he was her father, not yet. It felt like betrayal to say it aloud. It was worse than confessing that she had stolen the letter from her mother's office, she supposedly shouldn't know about it. Even if it was entirely her right.

"Can I see your necklace, Colin?" She asked the Slytherin boy, trying to change slightly the subject, diverting it to something that was just as, or even more, important to her, and she figured it would be to Jun as well. "It's familiar, what you mentioned about who attacked you, Liam." This time Mey looked at Liam instead, "I don't know what you all think but...the wolf that attacked us... Jun and me? He only had three fangs... I find it strange...odd..." She said, frowning thoughtfully, looking away at the table and all the mess scattered on it. Ironically, it seemed to reflect the state she herself was in. With all the information scattered randomly in her mind and being unable to organise it into its proper and due place, "Is it just a coincidence...?"

Colin noted the very slight shift in Meyra's posture. Her calm demeanour ever so subtly shifted as she softly repeated one single word. Most other kids wouldn't even have heard her say it. But his sensitive ears caught it. And he knew very well that Mey's twin, Jun heard it and his own twin, Liam heard it as well. His eyes briefly flicked towards his brother for confirmation.

"Uncle?"

Her soft voice wasn't simply repeating a fact. Oh, he's your uncle --- coolio. Nope. There was something else in the lilt of her voice. A question. Not like she needed Colin to repeat what she had very clearly heard and understood. Rather, a questioning tone that belied some kind of uncertainty.

As they talked, Colin wondered about this. Why did she sound like this was so unbelievable? It was pretty well known that he came from a large family. It only stood to reason that he had loads of aunts and uncles! Colin watched Mey's eyes carefully. They were green, unlike her twin's. Interesting. He'd seen this kind of green before. Not like his own. Pond scum green. Hers seemed more like moss. A beautiful colour. Suddenly she asked about Old Three Fangs.

Colin blinked. "Oh!" he said. He reckoned it was all a lot to take in at once! "Three Fangs! AngelFyre helped us sort out who he really is last summer! She had a vision and everything," he said, tapping the wolf fang. He lowered his voice again. "Matthias Manksbridge." Liam snarled. "Aye, I'd like to meet him one of these days for a proper chat! We've so much to catch up on, and we've never even been properly introduced."

But Mey didn't seem to be listening. Colin's gaze swept across Mey's features. Her fists were clenched. Her eyes had that look of being elsewhere. Colin began to wonder what was going on. The thought dawned on him. Clearly this wasn't just a question of idle curiosity. Not a speculation about an interesting point of connection between them. No. There was something much deeper going on. Colin reckoned that he'd just have to wait and see what Mey would say.

He had to wait quite a while, as Mey processed everything he'd said. And when she did at last begin her reply, Colin was not expecting what she had to say!

"He...he wrote a letter to my mother. He..." Meyra's eyes glanced over toward Jun, exactly like how his always seek out Liam for reassurance. "He speaks about that...that Sanctuary you mentioned."

Colin's eyebrow raised slightly. That was interesting!

"Apparently he built it with my mother..."

"Oh!" Liam said. "That's really interesting! He's never told us anything..."

Colin caught a detail his brother missed.

He landed a swift kick to Liam's ankle.

"Ow! What was---?"

Colin gave him a sharp look, then glanced back down at Mey's hands. They were still balled into tight fists. Liam's eyes widened. He understood. Colin waited. It didn't seem like Mey had taken any notice of Liam's interruption.

"When...when they were together...or something like that..." Meyra finished lamely.

Wait.

Colin and Liam turned towards each other, eyes wide.

Together?

Colin turned back to Mey. "---?"

Before he get the question out, Mey asked about his necklace, reaching for it. "Can I see your necklace, Colin? It's familiar, what you mentioned about who attacked you, Liam." Meyra turned to looked at Liam. "I don't know what you all think but...the wolf that attacked us... Jun and me? He only had three fangs... I find it strange...odd..."

"Oh! Um. Sure!" Colin slipped the necklace over his head and put it in Meyra's hand.

"Poor Matthias," Liam said savagely. "Bonked him with a stone before we yanked that out of his face. Must have hurt." Colin smirked as Liam's eyes searched Meyra's. "Next time, I'll make sure he's awake when we take the other one." Colin nodded in approval. He let Meyra's words sink in. The wolf that had attacked them, MeyAndJun, they clearly remembered him having only three fangs. Colin observed Jun's expression as Meyra and Liam talked.

Mey asked if all this were just a coincidence.

Colin's mind mulled over the likelihood that loads of werewolves had only three fangs. It didn't seem very high. His thoughts turned towards Manksbridge himself. A mostly unknown quantity. He and Liam had done some research since last summer. There had been Manksbridges living near Altnaharra, but they couldn't find anything much about a Matthias. He seemed to be a pretty low class character. Perhaps they had been researching in the wrong places?

He shook his head slowly. "I- I don't think twas a coincidence, Mey," he began. "I just wonder if Aunt Agatha had her wretched hands in this as well? Mey. When were you two turned, anyway? Me, twas in August of 2021, and Liam the next year, so 2022. What about ye two?"

The two blonde haired idiots gave each other a look of something Jun could not quite place. Confusion, curiosity and an odd familiarity was spreading across their features, though simultaneously a flicker of something that almost seemed like distrust. The Ravenclaw disliked the way they looked at each other and then back at Mey and her. It wasn’t that she disliked Colin and Liam terribly. They were… alright. Fine, each time they ran through them in the halls or caused mayhem in some way, Jun looked at them like they were the most annoying humans on earth — and perhaps they often were — but she had also caught herself suppressing small smiles around them. She simply had a hard time trusting anyone she didn’t know in and out.. and these two knew about the curse that turned them all into monsters each full moon. A valid reason to be wary of them, in Jun‘s opinion.

Her eyes flickered over to her Cousin when she asked once again whether they knew Moray McCoire or not. Jun had a sinking feeling that the boys knew something. There was just a sliver of impatience in Mey‘s voice, one that perhaps betrayed the urgency Jun imagined her Cousin felt. This wasn’t Jun’s conversation to have, she wouldn’t say anything unless Mey looked like she wanted her to. Her duty in this was simply to be there for an important, possibly life changing exchange of words.. to stand by Mey for support.

When Colin stood up and pulled out his wand and pointed it at two first years, Jun‘s gaze followed as her brows furrowed. The blonde Slytherin had simply pulled out two chairs, right from beneath two girls. Typical. Her gaze shot back to him with clear disapproval. „Merlin… could you be any more of a ruffian?“ left her lips in a mumble, yet Jun sat down and turned her attention to the task at hand. Getting information out of these two. Which couldn’t be too hard, she doubted there was anyone that didn’t know about the McCoires and their like for Werewolves. It became very clear when Colin ran through the halls, howling out some girls name, or when the two ran by the lake as if they had the „zoomies“ dogs usually got. Though perhaps the Ravenclaw was also just a bit too judgmental and couldn’t quite understand how someone wouldn’t try their hardest to hide what they were.

Then began the part where information started flowing out of the twins. Moray McCoire was the younger brother of Liam and Colin’s Father. That meant he was Colin’s and Liam’s Uncle. No, that couldn’t be right. That’d mean… Meyra was possibly related to these two idiots. Jun’s gaze snapped to her Cousin, as did her hand underneath the table to instantly — as soon as Mey had sat down — offer not only mental but physical support. A grounding touch. She couldn’t imagine how her best friend felt right now, but when she caught that almost pleading, exasperated gaze? Jun gave her Cousins hand a gentle squeeze and a look of reassurance. Mey’s entire world was being flipped over and the Ravenclaw felt awful about not being able to do more than hold her hand.

They didn’t even really have time to process that new possibility, before Liam and Colin began giving them more imput. Their father, Moray, ‘Uncle’ Colin (more than one Colin in one family?) and ‘Uncle’ Morvan had all attended Hogwarts together and Morvan (McCoire also?) had died before the big battle at the end of the second wizarding war. Colin and Liam were giving them so much new information that Jun had to focus to catch it all. Their Uncle Colin had also died. When Colin — the present one, not ‘Uncle’ Colin — spoke up about Mey and Jun both being wolves, the latter instinctively tensed, her gaze flickering around the library before going back to Colin and Liam. He really did not need to say that here. Alas, there was no time to think about anyone hearing them, as he babbled right on. Something about Liam’s turning and a Wolf named Three Fangs? That was when Jun momentarily felt her heart stumble, as Colin lifted up a wolf fang necklace. That wolf only had three fangs now? A flash of teeth marks on a bloody neck flickered before Jun’s inner eye. Three teeth marks in her shoulder. Images of that full moon night just a couple years ago came rushing in. Colin or Liam — Jun couldn’t really focus anymore on who was saying what — started saying something about AngelFyre (McCubbin or something, was it?) a vision and the name of that wolf. Matthias Manksbridge. The name didn’t mean anything to Jun, but how many wolves with three fangs could there be? And if Colin and Liam were somehow connected to this wolf, and Meyra’s father was their uncle, what new information did that unlock?

The young girl felt herself already spiraling. This was a sensitive topic for her, even with all that therapy and all that grieving, she could never quite let a mention of that night not get to her. And if she didn’t get herself under control in those moments, she’d spiral into a mess. Jun felt herself mindlessly shake her head, blinking away the image of her Father’s bleeding body by the stairs, as her nails dug into her palm. This was about Moray McCoire and Colin was already speaking again. Jun cleared her throat silently and shifted in her seat to look back at the twins and take in the new Information about the possible whereabouts of Moray. Some sort of Sanctuary, some secret Organization. The Sanctuary had been mentioned in the letter. Then they finished speaking and left Meyra and Jun to reply. Only that any words Jun could have said right now were left stuck in her throat as she tried to sort out the mess forming in her head.

Her gaze flickered to her Cousin, who was looking back at her. Only then, Jun’s hands loosened from the grip she had, her nails no longer digging into the skin of her palms. Her brown eyes softened into a wordless reassurance and Jun gave her cousin a small nod, meant to say “It’s okay, I’m here.” There was always that sense of protection between them. Where one was, the other usually wasn’t far. And when one needed the other, they could count on each other. When Mey began speaking, it took all of Jun not to instantly grab her Cousins hand again. She wanted to let Mey say this, without anything holding her back. The one thing Jun did do, was let her gaze remain on her Cousin. The Ravenclaw did not spare the twins one look, instead her brown eyes were focused on Meyra’s green ones. When Mey looked at her, Jun’s gaze neither faltered nor moved. And when Mey‘s hands clenched into fists again, Jun finally reached out with both of hers and took Mey’s hands to stop her from digging her nails into her skin. Apparently they both did that when trying to cope with something..

Colin’s and Liam’s reaction was lost on Jun, she still hadn’t spared them a glance. Not even to see their faces when Mey revealed that her Mother and Moray had been together. This moment, Jun’s entire attention was reserved for her cousin. Someone could have cast bombarda and Jun wouldn’t have taken her eyes off her best friend. However, that next shift of topic did cause her to snap out of that focus of comfort. Colin handed the Fang Necklace to Mey and Jun’s eyes followed, as her own hands moved back to her lap. She wouldn’t have touched that thing with gloves. For some reason, Jun instantly felt nauseated at the sight. Liam was still joking along with Colin and Mey seemed to want to know more, to figure this out.. but Jun? She practically froze in her seat. Colin had been turned in August of 2021, Liam in 2022. Suddenly, Jun felt herself thrown back to the St. Mungo’s hospital room with tears rolling down her cheeks, after waking up from the attack. Her entire world had crumbled apart that day.

It took her a moment to say anything whatsoever. Her lips parted, her mouth suddenly dry as her eyes burned. “Aug…” her voice came out rough, barely audible before she cleared her throat. “August 2023..” then left Jun’s lips as she blinked several times and looked away from the table. Her gaze found a library window instead, heart beating fast and heavy as she tried to stay in the moment. This wasn’t about her Dad, Jun had to get it together.

When Meyra decided to seek out the twins and finally ask them the questions that had haunted her since reading Moray's letter, she hadn't imagined that the conversation would develop and also touch on other topics. Issues that not only concerned her and her parents, but topics that were not only painful and sensitive for her but also for her cousin Jun. Perhaps even more so for her best friend, because unlike Meyra, who had found a new and unexpected family, Jun had lost someone very dear to her, and that someone would never return, not after that full moon night when everything had changed. Meyra felt a pang of guilt for having asked her cousin to go with her to talk to Colin and Liam. The shadow of expression that had fallen over Jun's face, like a veil of torment and silent pain, had made Meyra regret asking for her company there. Had she known that issues about that night would be discussed, she would have gone to Colin and Liam alone.

It was too late now. Knowing Jun as she did, Meyra knew the best thing she could do was make sure her friend knew she wasn't alone, and ensure her heart's affairs remained private if that was Jun's wish. So, while Meyra hadn't missed Jun's reaction to the information about Matthias Manksbridge, she wouldn't be the one to draw attention to how her cousin seemed to struggle with the memories that had also haunted her when she recalled the moment their lives first intersected with the three-fanged werewolf.

Meyra knew that this subject would inevitably have to be brought up again. She felt it was a link between their lives, the four of them, that couldn't be ignored. At least not by her. Even though the young Gryffindor still couldn't quite put together all the pieces of the puzzle, there was that premonition that gripped her heart. But one part of it had already been completed, the answer to the question that had brought her there in the first place. Her suspicions turned into certainties, Colin and Liam were her cousins. And no, they weren't distant cousins on a seemingly endless family tree, but direct cousins since their fathers were siblings.

The silent, questioning look Colin had given her when she revealed that her mother and Moray had been together, told her that the boy had sensed a deeper meaning than she had tried to convey, and a conflict arose within her. Should she confirm that yes, there was something more to it, or should she remain silent and leave him in doubt? In reality, the difficult part wasn't revealing to the twins that they were close family. The difficult part was finding the best way to tell them. Meyra felt that everything depended on her choice of words and tone of voice with which she would reveal what she had discovered. If she spoke enthusiastically, it would sound forced, if she spoke neutrally and passively, it wouldn't sound right for delivering such news. And there was a strong possibility that Colin and Liam wouldn't take the news well. What if they took the opportunity to tease and mess with her? What if they didn't believe her? What if they simply didn't want to know? What if they treated it all as irrelevant?... Meyra didn't know what would be worse, but she knew that any of those reactions would hurt her, and she hated admitting it!

"Yes, together." She ended up saying, shrugging slightly and crossing her arms in an unreflected gesture of self-comfort, "Like...together, together." She said awkwardly, her discomfort clear and evident, looking Colin and Liam alternately in the eyes, wishing the boys would use all their intelligence at that moment and not force her to explain word for word how they had been together and what that meant.

As always, Meyra's instinct made her look to Jun for the emotional support that only she could and knew how to give. When their eyes met and Jun responded with a small nod, reminding her that she wasn't alone, Meyra felt the tension inside her ease slightly, her heart calming down a bit. She was being foolish, there was nothing to fear from a possible rejection, not when the most important person in the world was already there, right beside her, as she always had been. Meyra returned Jun's gaze with a shy smile that only made the corner of her lips faintly tremble. Mey sighed deeply, closing her eyes briefly before looking at the twins again, "Moray... I found out that... well..." Another deep breath, as if she was literally about to dive into the icy waters of the Great Lake, instead of into the revelation that chilled the sweaty palms of her hands, "that... that he is my...myfatherwellthat'sit." Another shrug.

There...
It was said...
That was it...

Meyra held her breath, if she could, she would have stopped time and run away from that library. Suddenly the space felt too small to fit all the turmoil that born within her as soon as those words left her lips. But that option was far from possible. Not when there was so much still to be discovered. There was that necklace, Three Fang, and now… Aunt Agatha, who the hell was Aunt Agatha?

“Aug…” Came Jun’s voice before Mey could form an answer to give to Colin, “August 2023…”. Meyra’s heart practically shrank in her chest, just as she knew Jun’s had broken slightly again when she remembered that summer night and voiced out that date. Suddenly digging deeper into that matter seemed less relevant than knowing if Jun would be ready to hear more answers about it. Meyra’s gaze turned to her best friend, she wouldn’t let that whole discussion continue there knowing it was hurting Jun, she knew better than to be that selfish, her curiosity could be sated another time. With deliberate gentleness, it was Meyra’s turn to hold Jun’s hand as she saw her cousin looking out the high library window, “Say a word, and we leave.” She said calmly and affectionately, making it clear to Jun that the choice was hers, and whatever her decision would be, Mey would accept it unconditionally and without any type of judgment. They would just leave, simple as that, no justifications were needed.
