The cold, Scottish air pierced Lyanna's skin as she thrusted the front doors of the castle open and a gust of biting wind greeted her. She didn't care, and she didn't look back as she heard the doors slam shut. The goosebumps on her skin were nothing compared to the constant anxiety that bubbled up beneath her skin, seeking a way out of purgatory. The tears that formed in the corners of her eyes as she ran were impossible to hold back, having been kept behind the mask of her pretty smiles for the entire previous week. There was nothing, nothing that could stop them now. And so they bled, staining her cheeks with salt and moisture.

The air, as cold as it may have been, filled her up, allowed her to finally breathe. Her pores soaked it up, like fuel along with the adrenaline that coursed through her veins. The sunchild was broken, fractured, a supernova hiding her hideous form. For every star that we see in the sky is 4000 light-years old. Imagine, that some of those orbs of light have already exploded by then, only admired for their past beauty. And so, when one does see them fracture, it's like a tv show unknowingly admiring the pain of a past existence. The sunchild chose to keep things quiet, hidden inside her, unknown to all but herself.

At night though, Lyanna tossed and turned and couldn't sleep with everything buried so deeply inside her. Stomach aches and nervous breakdowns were the result, but those could not be shown. Others would cause her more pain, she thought. They would judge her, spread rumors if they saw her look anything but ordinary and happy as a Hufflepuff going about her daily routine. After all, the sun is only really noticed when it stops burning, and would then only be looked down upon. Or else they would try to help her but simply make things worse, being the I feel sorry for you but I don't actually understand how you feel type of people.

When her legs couldn't hold her anymore, the supernova collapsed onto the earth beneath her, her body meeting the ground with a soft thud. Curled up on the paved Terra Mater1, the girl cried, and cried. Not like a helpless baby. Like a soul who knows from within that her life, her very essence, has cracked. Not impossible to fix, maybe, but that isn't relevant for one who sees the world upside down, who is disoriented and scared. Oh so very scared. Because for the sunchild, her family and friends are those who she holds closest, and when one of the most important pillars of that temple disappears, the entire temple crashes to the ground.

Breathe, supernova. The world awaits you, for you have the potential to fly oh so far. Please, dearest, do not act as Icarus did. Save yourself from the fate of endless pain and melancholy, find your place and rebuild the temple. You need not jump into the pit of despair, Tartarus is not your destiny. For if you shatter, there will be nothing left to restore.

Harvey wrapped his winter cloak tightly around himself as he made his way out of the castle. Days like this required a quiet area for contemplation, but in a school full of countless other witches and wizards, where does one go for solitude? The shores of the Great Lake perhaps? A decent spot this time of year as the frigid winds often kept the population inside. Still, the chance that many others would seek out this refuge was high. Maybe one of the unused classrooms? No, someone was bound to wander in. So, Harvey had taken to visiting the boathouse when in need of a quiet spot to think.

Now, Harvey was not an antisocial person. While no one would describe him as the life of the party, he did enjoy the chance to mingle with his peers. He was the kind of kid to skirt around the perimeter of the crowd. Ducking in and out when he saw the opportunity to thrust himself into the right situations. Mostly to collect juicy bits of detail for gossiping. Perhaps add a laugh so that the star quidditch player might notice him. Maybe add an opinion or two to whatever current event gripped the academics to show he could keep up the pace. However, there were days like today when you just need a little “me” time.

Ever since he was a young lad, Harvey had appreciated his time alone. Perhaps because he was an only child? Maybe it was just a part of his nature? Regardless, the boy needed quiet places to organize his thoughts and process his emotions. Left unchecked and they would begin to twist and spiral. Too long like that and it would rattle his mind. Unfocused, impulsive, hot tempered. While he cared little what others thought about him, keeping up his reputation as a well-centered boy was of the upmost importance. You can have cracks, just don’t let the others see them. His grandfather’s words echoed in his thoughts.

Yet as Harvey entered the boathouse this fortress of solitude would be immediately shattered by the sound of a young girl’s cry. The boy couldn’t help the eye roll when he spotted her curled up on the floor. It wouldn’t be the first time he had stumbled across another first year have some sort of emotional breakdown. Homesick, bad grades, some upper-level student made fun of your hair tie. What was so hard about adjusting to life at a boarding school? He had handled it just fine! Why couldn’t they?

However, as this girl continued to weep it became apparent that this was perhaps more than the sniffles of hurt feelings. The tone carried a hint of true heartbreak. Harvey had heard it from his mother countless times. Still, he could just turn and leave her be. He really didn’t want this right now. The rock that Harvey stepped on as he thought of leaving would skitter out from under his foot, betraying his whereabouts…

They say time heals, but Lyanna Oak was not sure she ever would. More than a month and a half had passed since the day that had turned her entire existence upside down. And still, the pain had not subsided in the slightest, but rather shifted from shock and denial to pure and unwavering heartbreak.

The sunchild was afraid.

She had never felt so broken before, so shattered, no one to turn to for fear of losing them as well. There was no way out of her pit of despair, it seemed, the hurt blinding every sense of direction and way forward. Her breathing came in ragged sobs as she cracked. Her soul was a hollow carcass, lost and alone. What now? Now that the world around her remained in color and she was just an empty shell in black and white, what now?

As she sat, the darkness of the evening around her no match for her current state, anguish settled upon her, no way to escape. Healing was not what she could afford to think about just yet. Right now, in February of 2025, all the sunchild could do was make it through the night, one day at a time.

There was only one thing that could make things worse. As bad as her situation already was, there was only one thing she would do almost anything to avoid: being seen. Despite some of her close friends being trustworthy enough to not leak how she was feeling, Lyanna was afraid. She was not herself anymore, in this state of mind, the hurt overwhelming her and each decision she made. One of these was staying away from anyone and everyone when her pain was apparent to those who saw her. The sunchild could not deal with anything more on her plate. Speculation. Pity. Others finding her grieving during the usual sleepless nights. That was what she desperately wanted to avoid. But fate, it seemed, had different plans for her.

As Lyanna sat there, her knees pulled up against her cheekbones, arms hugging them tightly, another figure entered the stage. Harvey Barrows, he was called, although Lyanna didn't know it just yet. She didn't see him at first, as he found her in her wretched condition, vulnerable, exposed and helpless. But then, between sobs, a pebble skittered across the cobblestones. The sunchild froze. Someone had found her. Heard her. Noticed what she had tried to keep hidden since the day she had returned to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, on the cold January morning marking the continuation of the school year.

She would not run. She was not weak. She was merely unsure of whether her mother was alive, put simply. A student should've been the least of her worries. And still, her breath got caught in her throat, as she slowly looked up and turned toward the noise.

A boy.

The student who had found her was a boy, no older than she was. Seemingly annoyed at her presence, she observed through tear-stained eyes. It was of no use wiping them now, and still, she did, regaining her composure to the best of her abilities.

The sunchild did not know what to do.

The cold had finally gotten to her, and she trembled in the evening air as it pierced her skin. But it also did her good, shaking her back to her senses. And that was when Lyanna finally spoke.

"You should go." Her voice cracked, grief and fear laced into her tone. She did not know him, but the prospect of him telling anyone what he had seen, or remembering her as the girl who was found crying at the boathouse, was terrifying nonetheless. She then uttered a final whisper.

"Please."

The girl cast her tear stained gaze towards Harvey and there was no turning away unseen now. Perhaps in that moment the strings of fate vibrated around them. One of those moments that changes the direction of your life for better or worse. Or sometimes both. The annoyance that he felt towards this girl taking up a space he wanted for himself quickly began to dissipate as they locked eyes with each other. In Harvey she would see no pity or discomfort that was so often prevalent in people when they were faced with someone else's sorrow. No, the boy was hardly empathetic. Perhaps a bit too cold and practical for his own good, but not unfeeling altogether. While this gaze of his was frigid in it too the girl would see understanding. There was something about the pain in her stare that he knew all too well. That crack in her aura that only heartache could form. He still wondered why it was possible to feel something that could disable you so. What purpose did it serve us, but maybe that's just what it meant to be human.

You should go...

A phrase Harvey had heard many times. Usually late at night when he drifted away from his bed. His mother's room just down the hall from his own and from within the sounds of sorrow would emanate. He would tiptoe to her side. Their large hands intertwining as they sat together in her own silent heartache. The boy would question why, but there was never any answer. Some people just cannot escape the darkness of their minds. Some wounds just cannot heal. While this scared him at first he grew to learn that sometimes all you can do is provide a presence. To let people know that they are not alone no matter how much it may feel that way, even when they try to send you away. They tell you that you should go, but sometimes the best thing you can do is to simply just stay.

"It won't serve you well to be alone in your current state." Again, Harvey was not a gentle person. His tone was dry and informative, but his actions spoke of someone who was not a complete monster. Nimble fingers loosened the clasp of his winter cloak as he let it fall from his shoulders. The girl was trembling. Probably because of the heightened emotions, but the evening breeze off of the lake was beginning to bite. Harvey kneeled beside her and offered the cloak, either handing it to her or draping it around her shoulders if she allowed. From there he would allow her space. It pained him to sit on the damp, stone floor of the boathouse in such nice trousers, but the circumstances offered no other option as he sat a few feet away.

Pressure never helped in these situations. Emotions were hard to reason with and time was almost always the solution. So, Harvey sat quietly for a moment before offering a distraction. "It's an odd thing. Crying, I mean. It's literally the first thing we do in life, but doesn't seem to have any physical benefit whatsoever. Would you like to talk about it?" Harvey's beady, dark eyes shifted back her way. "I'm Harvey by the way."
