Perhaps Jrue letting her cat roam around a library was an okay enough idea, but an open field was pushing it a little. Especially an open field of a place he didn't know quite yet. It wasn't that Jrue didn't trust him, or that she thought that he would run away, it was rather letting him be in an area with magic learning, and certainly magic not yet perfected students. The thought that there was a third year somewhere with the access to a wand with limitless spells, or a first year on a broom who could swoop in and scare poor Skipy almost made her want to take him back to her dorm. She didn't, however, the joy of seeing him dash around in the bright green grass and leap off the bleachers much outweighing the cons.

Nevertheless, Jrue was occupying herself with snacking on pumpkin pasties and savory biscuits and a nice thermos of hot soup, prepared in the kitchen. It was one of those October days where it was still ridiculously warm and enjoyable outside. Where the sun tickled your shoulders and the breeze wasn't enough to chill your core, but a kiss of coolness when you needed it most. Jrue had dawdled about after her potions and charms and herbology lessons, completing readings and even having time to tidy up her room before she had nothing else to do. This didn't happen often, she usually had enough homework to keep her occupied until dinner, yet here she was.

She'd layed out a blanket of baby blue and her snacks right beneath the canopy of two towering trees, the shade shielding the dapples of sun still left over from the highness it held hours earlier. The air was almost swampy it was so warm, and Jrue was glad she'd changed her clothes before she'd left for the afternoon. She had sadly forgotten to snab herself a book, leaving her with nothing to do but watch Skipy and consume her snacks by herself in the calm of the evening.

It was nearing the end of golden hour, where the sun was taking it's final bow behind the mountains and the trees, the perfect time for an afternoon snack, if you had time to ask Jrue. It was the first time she'd been able to actually have one outside, most of hers taking place in the window seat of her dorm. She sat on the soft blanket, laying on her stomach, the little thermos of soup sitting in front of her as she watched her feline companion spring and dart from one shady patch beneath the risers to the next, swatting at bugs and purring when he'd nab them. She held her head in her hand, humming thoughtfully to herself.

Thoughts? Absolutely none. Other than how glad and excited she was to be in such a beautiful part of Scotland. She cringed softly at her own thoughts, tucking her hair behind her ear and taking a sip of the thermos. The steam of the heated liquid turned her soft cheeks a shade of pink lace. She set the thermos down, pulling at strands of grass softly, twirling them around her fingers before watching them spring back and lean back into their previously held positions.

Jrue hummed to herself, "What a wonderful, wonderful world we live in Skipy-". The comment flew right over the cats head, his attention still caught on the bugs and swirlies that flew through the air. Jrue caught a soft, mellow laugh in her throat, turning her head at her companion as he bounced about in his own world.

Lottie had determined very quickly that Nyx was going to be a problem.

She hadn't even wanted a cat. If anything, she could have gone all seven years without any little creature to add onto the stress of student life. Of course, perhaps in that moment of dreamy daze that occurred the moment she saw the little kitten, she had thought that this was the exception. She had been quickly proven wrong.

In the few months since school had begun, Nyx had proven to be quite the peculiar feline. She was no a typical cat, at least not to Lottie's limited understanding of animals. Sure, she spent hours lounging in the sun and slept more than she played, but there was something off about her. She had this alien quality to her sway and stance, as though she was not quite of this world. Her eyes were beady and large, and Lottie had woken up more than a handful of nights to a pair of green orbs staring her down from the end of her bed.

That was, if Nyx was even sleeping in the bed. It seemed she had determined that her bed was wherever she made it. She would sleep on bookshelves, wedge herself into drawers and cubbies, hide under the bed and then run out just as Lottie was finally awake enough to prepare for school. She lived on her own schedule, played only when she felt like it, and made Lottie's life hell when she had finally made up for her past trouble.

Today, Nyx had decided she would be nuisance. She had tripped Lottie twice while the girl attempted to get dressed, followed her to the bathroom and rubbed against her leg, knocked over one of Lottie's pictures and shattered the frame, and bit Lottie's finger when she tried to pick up the broken glass. Now, bleeding, exhausted, and littered with bruises, Lottie had determined that Nyx was only acting this way because she was cooped up in the dorm all day. So, with care to keep Nyx from running off during transport, the little cat was finally set free on the grounds.

Yet, oddly, Nyx stayed at Lottie's side. Lottie cocked her head at the little creature, kneeling down to glance it over.

"If you're going to finally be calm every time I let you out to play, I'm taking you back to the menagerie." It was an empty threat, and it seemed Nyx knew that, as she simply rubbed her head against Lottie's knee and stumbled when the girl stood up. "You're such a pain."

Flopping down onto the grass, Lottie drew her knees up to her chest and watched as Nyx curiously sniffed at the grass and attempted to bite a fallen leaf, leaving small fang marks. Lottie looked out around the grounds, finding that it was fairly sparse, aside from a few first years. One in particular, it seemed, had had the same idea of bringing their cat out. Lottie glanced down at Nyx, who was now hunting down a desperate moth.

"See that, there?" Lottie motioned towards the other cat pointedly. "That's what cats are supposed to do."

With her feet kicking behind her, Jrue took a bite out of her pumpkin tart, humming to herself again as she watched her cat pounce about. He was so full of youth, so full of joy, it made her wonder what Skippy thought about in his free time. Or maybe he didn't think at all, perhaps his brain was just empty and filled with nothing but fuzzy silence. Cats were so mystical and mysterious. It was a wonder she had him at all.

The sounds of a soft voice in the background made Jrue peel away from her focused work on her soup. A girl, 3rd year, she reckoned, was now kneeling in the shimmery grass, her own focus on Jrue's beloved feline friend. She noticed a black cat bouncing about in the grass beside the pretty Slytherin, and assumed that rather than talking to thin air, the girl must have been talking to the cat. Fixing her gaze back onto her own cat and then at the girl's pet, Jrue sat up, clearing her throat. "If you'd like, the two cats could meet.. if you'd like. Skippyjon is very sweet, he won't bite." She smiled from the distance, speaking loud enough for the older student to hear but not enough to disturb the others in the clearing.

Skippy, as if he had heard her say it, stuck his tail straight up, sticking his brown little nose into the air promptly after. He swished his head about, then bounded towards the black cat with a mewl, his soft fur swishing as he bounded in the other felines direction. "Skip!" She hollered after, standing up and glaring at the Siamese.

As soon as the other girl's eyes found Lottie's, the Slytherin averted her gaze, a light blush painting across her cheeks. Nyx was none the wiser, kneading gently at the dry leaves below, the sound of crunching mixing discordantly with the cacophony of birds crying out from above. Lottie huffed, begrudgingly smoothing her hand down the feline's soft coat.

"Such trouble," she murmured, though a strange tint of fondness bled through her tone surprising her. She felt an odd pride at that, at the idea of being capable of such warmth. She allowed her slow smile to spread across her face. It was of course then that her small moment of respite from the little rascal's peculiarity was yanked from her grasp, and by none other than the cat she had compared Nyx to.

Nyx's head shot up at the sound of rustling grass and crunching leaves, as well the vigorous footsteps of a panicked young woman. Lottie immediately swept Nyx into her arms, standing up straight just before a small Siamese could pounce. Nyx blinked owlishly down at the lighter creature, paws planted firmly against Lottie's chest.

The other girl, not much younger than Lottie, was unfamiliar. She had brown hair, light and long, and wore the Hufflepuff emblem. That made sense. Lottie didn't have much notable experience with the other house, but she was well aware of their clumsiness. With a skeptical narrow of her eyes, Lottie held her cat closer.

"I'm guessing this feline is yours?"

Anything her cat wanted, it seemed he got. Whether Jrue wanted him to have it or not, it was always in his paw, or mouth, or path, his will was the way. She fixed her eyes on him as he sprinted through the grass, dashing over to the black cat at a speed she had never seen him move. His long limbs bounded with elegance, the path clear.
Leaving her lovely blanket behind, Jrue headed towards the cat, and the other girl, making her way over under the cover of the trees. Skip's tail swished excitedly through the air, his innocent feline instinct taking over as he eyed his new playmate. She stopped right in front of her cat, his hind quarters stuck into the air as he gazed at the girl's pet.

"I'm sorry-" she said, grabbing at the cat before he swatted at her hands quickly. He turned back around to his friend, a sweet purr rumbling it's way out of him. Her charming acquaintance plopped himself down into the grass, and she knelt down, scooping him into her arms before he could let out anything close to a yowl. He hung his paws over her hands in a surrendered manner, feet and tail splayed out in the green turf. The latter tapped softly on the ground, and he continued purring. Little patches of clover and stray dandelion furs were littered around in the patch of greenery, perfectly placed and particularly appropriate for the pretty location.

"Mine," she chuckled softly, "only as much as this school belongs to Headmaster Lear," Jrue scrunched up her nose. "To be honest, he's a brat. Still love him, though," She raised her eyebrows, the cat oblivious to the conversation and wholeheartedly focused on the black cat that was cradled in the other girls arms.

A soft smile was all Jrue relayed to the older girl, her cool grey eyes fixed on her face. She was very pretty, scarily so, almost. Jrue envied her soft nose and glossy skin. She was nothing if not pretty also, but this girl was just simply charming. She sat down fully in the grass now, the cat following as she embraced him fondly. She tucked her hair behind her shoulders, clearing her throat as she gazed at the victim of Skip's curiosity. "His name?" She gestured with Skip's paw, a mrow escaping him. The girl's pet was awfully adorable too, big eyes full of wonder to match her own.

Lottie held Nyx very firmly to her chest, a strange sense of protectiveness washing over her as she stared down at the foreign cat. She had recently been reading up on Magical Maladies, and was well-aware of the horrific diseases any creature could carry. Nyx's tail swung back and forth slowly, gently brushing against Lottie's sweater and getting caught in the fuzzy fabric. Lottie would worry about the cat hair later. Right now, she had this villainous new cat to deal with.

"It's fine," Lottie replied hesitantly, perplexed by the following statement. She did not understand why the girl would keep up with such trouble if she found the cat to be an annoyance. And then Lottie realized that she was in the same exact boat. She glanced down at the intolerant creature dangling from her arms, and hummed softly.

Offense took over any feelings of relation she had harbored before. She tightened her grip on the small cat in her arms, causing Nyx to squirm slightly. "Her name is Nyx." Her gaze subconsciously trailed back down to the cat in her arms. She didn't suppose she looked much like a boy. Her eyes were big and pretty, and her fur was as soft as cotton.

She huffed a bit. It was rather polite to continue a conversation, even if one had said something that offended you. Her sister had taught her that, though she also taught her that no one was worth her time until they could prove it. So, this girl would have to prove it. Possibly. "And I'm Lottie. You are?"

"Her name, sorry.." Jrue's eyes popped from the girl's face down to the feline in her hand. "Nyx... it suits her awfully well-" She chewed on her lower lip, patting the top of Skip's head and looking back up to Lottie. She had an aura about her, whimsical in a way that was magical. Like she had known this world, and known more of this world than Jrue could ever begin to know. Not that she wasn't magical, just less experienced. Lottie seemed like the kind to know all about the subject.

"You know, I don't believe I've ever met anyone named lottie before. Why, it's very lovely. Lovely Lottie-" She nodded at nothing in particular, tucking loose hair back. The sun had just start setting, the hot rays dappled by the trees and the clouds. It was a good thing it had, too. Jrue would've been so encapsulated by the conversation she wouldn't even have noticed the light. "I'm Jrue, but with a J. Kind of the same as Lottie.. but not-" She blinked softly, smiling with her mouth closed at the girl. She didn't speak for a moment, and looked down to her own cat now laying lazily in her arms.

It was as if he had forgotten all about the black cat near him. "This is Skippyjohn.. I call him Skip." She scratched the fur by his neck, and he let out a deep, but equally light purr that seemed to make the grass around him vibrate. "I'm sorry he jumped your dear pet. She is a much more refined lady than this little bugger-" She let out an airy laugh, knees starting to ache under her weight. She readjusted, sitting with her legs to her side.

She cleared her throat, looking back up at the girl. "I do apologize for intruding your lovely afternoon. I was just enjoying myself an afternoon snack. Classes are such droll activities, you know-" Jrue laughed again, Skip's tail swishing lazily back and forth, back and forth, pushing the grass out of the way and causing upset for a local ladybird and causing it to crawl up his arm. The cat didn't even notice the bug, lost in his own trance of sleep.

Lottie knew that Nyx was an excellent name for the feline. Dark as midnight and twice as mysterious, emanating a sort of enigmatic aura that still wasn't quite identifiable to the third year, even after so much time spent around Nyx. They were both mysteries to each other, and learning more by the day. Though Lottie was painfully aware that Nyx did not have the capacity for thoughts, she still wished there were some way to reach inside her brain and study what made her so... peculiar.

"It's not my real name," Lottie amended, thumb mindlessly scrubbing circles into the short fur at Nyx's forehead, "Lottie is short for Charlotte." It felt obvious, though maybe that was just Lottie's bitter mood finding anything it could to register as an annoyance. She took an even breath in, finally releasing Nyx to sit curiously by her leg. "I've never heard the name Jrue, either. It's not similar to Lottie at all."

A bit of sun had begun peaking over the mountain, shooting golden streaks across the grass where Nyx had begun to walk, peering cautiously over at the other girl and, by extension, her cat. Lottie watched this quiet interaction, noting the care Nyx took not to get too close. Strange, strange cat.

"You apologize a lot," Lottie said simply, receptive to the bluntness of her words but mostly uncaring. It was late enough that any semblance of control Lottie had over her tone was quickly fading. "It's really alright. Nyx is hardly refined. Just watchful."

It was very interesting, this girl's manner of speech. Not truly interesting, but she was blunt. She saw things how they were, and wanted other's to agree with her. Jrue liked it, she had to admit. In a world of suckups and liars, it was a nice addition. "Your blue is my cerulean-" Her shoulders shrugged, watching Skippy dig his nose into the short grass yet again. He was such an idiot. "Charlotte is also a beautiful name. I think I have a cousin named Charlotte. She does Muggle ballet professionally." Not that this girl would care.

"I'm named after my uncle. His name is Drew, spelled D-r-e-w, meanwhile I'm Jrue, J-r-u-e." The warmth of the sun made her covered skin hot. "My parents decided to get clever." She watched as Skippyjon eyed Nyx, his big blue eyes fixed on the inky feline across from him. Skippy dipped his head down into the grass now, gaze still transfixed on his new accomplice. The cat then reached a paw out slowly, flipping himself onto his back and staring up at the three girls now, tail curled. His eyes were even wider now. Who knew it was possible.

"You apologize a lot."

She did? Jrue was not aware of this. The girl's immediate instinct was to apologize, but she caught herself, not wanting to look the fool. She pressed her nose into the crease between her two knees, thinking before speaking again. "Do you know Mark Twain? He doesn't go to Hogwarts- he's long dead. A Muggle author- I reckon he was magical in some way, a squib probably. His work is very refined." She gave a nod, sitting in silence before starting once more. "Once he wrote- 'If animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow; but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much.' "

Jrue didn't say anything again for a moment. "I quite like that quote an awful lot. Nyx made me think of it. Skippyjon would still be a blundering fellow." With the tap of a finger on the cat's head, she smiled, blinking at Lottie, not in expectation, but in shared connection.
