Letters
XXXThe school year was drawing to a close, and Akari was looking forward to going home and reuniting with his parents. Hopefully this summer would be less stressful than the last! He was reviewing his notes on the Calming Draught out of boredom. Hikari wasn't in the dormitory at the moment... But imagine his surprise when a tawny brown owl swooped through the window and the letter it held was not addressed to him, but to 'Dad.'

XXXAkari didn't know a lot of things, but he did know he was not a father. He read the letter, a nagging voice in the back of his mind scolding him for reading mail that wasn't meant for him. Oh, this is a Hogwarts student. A few other things stuck out to him, like the fact that the intended receiver was prone to setting things on fire. Hey, I've done that a few times. He had not a clue about these people, Rue and Amelia and Lumi and Stelle. Feed Lumi-? He looked at the brown owl, who was staring at him expectantly. "Are you Lumi?" Akari inquired. He had run out of owl treats, considering they were going home in just a few days. "I'm sorry, I don't have anything for you. Please don't bite me."

XXXThe letter was rampant with many different emotions, which he supposed was unavoidable for a letter of this length. He hesitated for a moment before picking a fresh sheet of parchment and beginning to pen a response. The very least he could do was return this letter to the sender so that it could actually get to Pam's father. And maybe he could comment a few of thoughts...? Although Akari knew this was a Hogwarts student, he was a bit tentative to sign his full name. He settled for just his given name. It wasn't too unusual, right? He also wasn't super sure on some of that grammar, especially as the sentences stretched longer, but... good enough? He sent it off with the brown owl, who seemed happy to receive it and not at all fussy.
XXXPam,

XXXI do believe your letter has been delivered to the wrong person. It is enclosed alongside this one, since you probably want to make sure it gets to your father properly. Don't worry, Lumi was perfectly pleasant.

XXXI would also like to apologise for my intrusion, as I read the whole thing out of curiousity, but rest assured that your information is not going anywhere. You might also be wondering who I am. My name is Akari, and I attend Mahoutokoro, the magical school in Japan. I am not in a position to comment on your life, especially since none of it was intended for me, but I would like to offer a bit of comfort. Life gets hard sometimes, and friends come and go, but it's always the time you spent with them that is important in the end.

XXXBest Wishes,

Dad,
Hi.
I was gonna write yesterday, but then I forgot. In my defense, Hogwarts keeps throwing things at me. It's also been raining a whole bunch here...

How's work? Did you set anything on fire? Nevermind don't answer that, I know you haven't.

Things are fine here. Rue is being very... Rue. Don't tell her I said so but she definitely hates her hair and the feeling is very mutual. swear half the things that happen around me somehow end up involving her. We were talking the other day and I ended up laughing so hard my stomach hurt. I'm pretty sure she'd take that as a compliment.

I'm doing justice to the Wizarding Camera you got me- although you'll have to wait for them pictures because there's absolutely nothing decent in there--

By which I mean I'm practicing- I promise.

I miss Amelia, though. It's weird not seeing her around. You know when someone's always there and then suddenly they aren't? It's like that.

Oh, and Lumi is being absolutely impossible lately. I don't know what's gotten into her. Maybe she's secretly training for a championship in whining. She keeps complaining about anything and everything, including my very existence!

Please feed her. She likes you better than me anywhere. I do hope she doesn't bite you though...

Classes are classes. Some are fun. Some are trying very hard not to be fun. Guess which category homework falls into.

I miss home sometimes. Not enough that I want to leave Hogwarts, obviously, but enough that I wish I could just apparate into the kitchen for ten minutes and steal food before coming back.

You're gonna tell me off about that aren't you?

Ohh important, I got wet in the rain sometime last month.

Yes, so, I know what you're thinking. Why did I take so long to tell you? Why did I do that? Am I sick? So I forgot to say so in the last letters of mine. And I'm alright I promise. Stelle joined me, and we had fun... honestly. I was rather surprised to see her out in a pouring thunderstorm but well.

Anyway, write back soon. Tell me what's going on at home because I feel like I know more about everyone at Hogwarts than I do about my own father right now.

Love you.

Pam

P.S. If anyone tells you I've become responsible, they're lying.

Speech Thoughts

There were very few things capable of reducing Pam to a state of complete and utter discombobulation.

Accidentally sending one of the most personal letters she'd ever written to a complete stranger was, apparently, one of them.

The owl was unfamiliar.

That, in itself, should have been enough to make Pam pause. Prepare herself.

But no.

The embarrassment had been too huge to keep in.

So Pam had taken to crashing out on her bed and cursing loudly at herself, wishing, oh wishing, she could she could somehow turn back time and prevent the whole incident from ever occurring.

Fire, loyal to his namesake, had played an important part in fanning the flames of Pam's emotional meltdown.

Ilie had been much more understanding.

He was all that had stopped Pam from setting Fire on fire.

That's a terrible pun.

She would later wonder how the situation had come to be in the first place.

For a while, Pam entertained several theories.

Lumi had developed a rebellious streak and had sold her letter to the barn owl for owl treats.

The Ministry had launched an investigation into her mail.

The universe simply hated her.

Eventually, however, one explanation proved annoyingly reasonable.

She and Eonaria had crashed into one another in the Owlery. Letters had gone flying. Somewhere in the ensuing chaos, two envelopes had found the wrong owners.

You have got to be kidding me right now.

Unless, of course, her letter had grown legs of its own and had walked itself to the Owlery and that specific barn owl.

That too, was highly plausible.

Eventually, she'd been able to get herself to read the letter sent by the stranger without being overloaded by the urge to melt into her bed or evaporate from existence.

Akari, whoever that was, was too damn nice.

Pam would've much preferred righteous indignation. A strongly worded reply. A Howler. Public humiliation. Something. Anything, anything else.

Why, for the love of chocolate, was he so normal about the disaster of a letter Pam had accidentally sent him, especially after reading the whole thing?!

Had he actually read it?

Did he understand anything at all?

That's not important right now—

"I can't do this." Pam groaned, crumpling up her third written piece of paper and tossing it into the dustbin. "How do you reply to a letter of this kind."

The answer, unfortunately, did not drop out of the sky.
Akari,

Hi.

Um.

First of all, I'm extremely sorry about... well... everything that just happened.

I don't normally mail my thoughts to random strangers across the world I swear. This is a very one-time occurrence.

I wasn't quite sure how to reply to you. I wrote a few versions before this one, lost count after the third though. So, um.... yeah.

I hope I haven't... completely ruined your impression of international post.

One quick correction though— that wasn't Lumi. I'm not sure if the owl that delivered my letter to you was the one that brought yours back to me, but in either case, Lumi didn't deliver mine to you last time. The snowy owl that's delivering this one is Lumi.

The flight to Japan might be a bit tiring for her, so she'll likely be hanging around for a while. Please feed her a bit.

Also steer clear of her beak. At her current mindset there's a 89.2% probability that she won't bite you but she never actually listens to me so I can't promise you that my several warnings of being a nice fluffy courier will actually be heeded.

...maybe I should've started with that.

As for what you said... Thank you.

I don't think anyone has ever described my situation quite like that before and I'm not sure I entirely believe it yet, but... I think I needed to hear it anyway.

Yours truly,
Pam

XXXA gorgeous white owl fluttered through his window, landed on his desk, preened... and then bit at him when he reached for the letter tied to her leg. Akari drew in a quick breath, yanking his hand away. Oh. Thankfully, her beak hadn't actually snagged on skin, just brushed by dangerously close. It took a few moments of figuring out the best way to separate the letter from the owl without getting nipped at.

XXX"Do you bite your owner too?" he scolded the owl softly once he finally wrangled the envelope off. "Be nice." He unfolded the parchment inside, scanning its contents.

XXXOh, this one's Lumi.

XXXHis unfinished letter sat on his desk for the next day or two. He hadn't written much in his first letter, but now that Pam at least sort of seemed interested in talking to him, even if half of it was apologies, Akari found more questions popping up in his mind.
XXXPam,

XXXI see now what you mean. Lumi is a very finicky owl. I didn't get bitten, but not for her lack of trying. I fed her, so hopefully she'll be nicer to you when she returns.

XXXIt would take a lot more than one misdelivered letter to make me lose faith in international post. Different owls have different habits, and mistakes happen. Most of my correspondence over borders has gone quite well. There's no need to apologise. I also think there are worse people the letter could have ended up with, so perhaps we are more fortunate than we realise.

XXXYou are very welcome. I'm no philosopher, but spreading a little learned comfort is always nice.

XXXYou spoke of wanting to Apparate into the kitchens earlier. Are Hogwarts students not usually allowed in the kitchens? And I was under the impression that Apparition on school grounds isn't possible at any of the wizarding schools. What kind of food would you like to eat?

XXXBest Wishes,

The boy's next letter was surprisingly not-awkward and Pam would be eternally grateful to him for that.

But

"Did you seriously try to bite him?" Pam groaned burying her head in her arms as she spoke to the owl in front of her.

Lumi couldn't have been any bothered about her human ruffling her feathers and preening herself without a care in the world.

Pam finally found herself slightly worried about the owl. She had been restless and snappier than normal, to the point that she'd ended up injuring Pam a few days ago. Still, Lumi had seemed calmer since she'd got back from Mahoutokoro, so perhaps she was getting better.

Still, Pam didn't like not knowing what was going on with her only pet.

The letter remained buried inside one of her books as she got busy with everything that came with returning home to her dadl. Pam had decided against summer camp this time around, opting to use the opportunity to stay with her father.

It was kinda hard to enjoy summer camp when one spent much of it feeling homesick.
Akari,

This is a bit overdue, but I hope you haven't been waiting too long for it. I've been caught up in things since I got home for the break.

Does Mahoutokoro have it's break around this time too?

Lumi seems much better now. She didn't try to bite me much and she seems to be in a good mood too. Or maybe she's just bring behaved around my father, that's possible.

To answer your questions, no, it's not possible to apparate in here. Is it the same at Mahoutokoro?

I said that because occasionally, I'm too lazy to get off the bed and walk myself to the kitchens.

As for what kind of food... Mostly chocolate. Hogwarts lunch breaks have really good food but there's never enough chocolate, atleast for me.

Do you like chocolate?

Yours truly,
Pam

P.S. Do you like blueberry tarts? I'm gonna make some soon.

XXXThere is a term, one that has never entered his line of thoughts before: baking buddies.

XXXOf course, after receiving Pam's most recent letter, where Lumi seemed to tolerate him a bit better, Akari set off to bake the best assortment of chocolatey goods he could find in the many cookbooks his mother loved to store. It might have taken him almost the entire day, with another good chunk spent cleaning up the flour explosion and sugar spills, but it was very entertaining. His father had asked him what caused this sudden urge to bake, and Akari simply replied that it was all on a whim. Speaking of which, they were running out of vanilla extract...

XXXHe carefully packaged the baked goods together so that they were not at risk of tearing through the paper bag or getting nibbled-- chocolate was highly toxic to owls-- and sent Lumi off with another handful of treats. She was rather delightful when she wasn't pecking at him. Peanut butter & dark chocolate chip cookies, chocolate macarons (those had taken more than a few attempts), caramel fudge brownies (he hadn't even known they had caramel in the house until he looked), pain au chocolat, a bundt cake with melted marshmallow as frosting (yes, he let it harden before sending it off), and a square chocolate tart with raspberry filling. A selection of six.

XXXAkari thought he might be sick of chocolate by now. Oh, well. He'd get over it. His family now had a dessert supply lasting for a week or three. Thankfully his mother absolutely adored chocolate. Why else would they have all those recipes in the house--?
XXXPam,

XXXNo, it wasn't too long. Half of the excitement of reading letters is the amount of time one spends waiting for them to arrive. Blueberry tarts? They sound quite nice. I can't say I've tried one before. Let me know how the baking went.

XXXYes, I believe all the magical schools conclude around this time, and none of them allow Apparition on school grounds. Is the kitchen far from where you sleep? Do you dwell in one of the towers, perhaps?

XXXI do like chocolate, and seeing as how you are baking, I thought I'd send you some things I tried out. Did I rush to bake upon reading your letter? Maybe. :) I wasn't sure if you preferred dark or milk chocolate, so I sent a variety. My entire house is scented of chocolate now. I fear it will take a few days for it to air out.

Speech Thoughts

The Graham household had been in an uproar that morning.

Pam's shout had brought her father running up to her room, armed with a frying pan, to the sight of a plethora of brown sweets and goodies on the bed.

He blinked.

Then chided her lightly, "Don't open sweets on the bed. You'll be bitten by ants."

The blonde girl herself was in tears. "Papa?! I think Lumi stole sweets from somewhere!"

Her father looked from the suspicious mountain of desserts, to the indignant snowy owl perched proudly on the window ceiling, and then back to his daughter.

"Are you sure?"

"Look at this!" Pam gestured wildly at the bed."There are cookies, brownies, cake, macarons, is that a donut—?"

"It's a bundt cake." her father supplied helpfully.

"Right- I've never had one before- no, NO! Lumi, darling, don't eat that, that's toxic for you." She swept her hand at the owl that had hopped closer, attempting to shoo her from the bed. Lumi gave an indignant squawk and perched herself atop her wardrobe.

Pam glared after her pet, trying not to burst into tears as she looked at her father for help. "Why did you even steal that... what do I do now?"

"Sweetheart."

Pam stopped, glancing at her dad who had untied a piece of paper from the owl's leg.

"...Would you like to read the letter before accusing your owl of international pastry theft?"

"...Dad we need to bake more."

---

Five minutes later, Pam stood in the middle of the kitchen, arms crossed over each other, deep in thought. Her father leaned against the doorway, watching her with amusement. "So, how many tarts are you actually sending him?"

"Twenty."

"You don't have twenty."

"Everything I have-"

The girl crossed over the counter to her father. "I know you've only had one tart since I've been busy sending them to my friends. I'll make you tarts which are for you and you only I promise."

He laughed.

"I'm not worried about me."

"Help me please," She said dramatically, "You're the one with the overflowing creativity."

"Alright." he patted her head, "Let's get to work."
Akari,

So I may have freaked out thinking Lumi stole stuff when she got back laden with food packets and desserts. But jokes aside, everything tasted absolutely brilliant. I've never eaten a bundt cake before, so it was a very interesting experience. Do people normally ice it with marshmallows?

I think I liked the fudge brownies the most. I've always liked fudgy desserts and caramel is always amazing.

The packages contain four blueberry tarts. I did think about adding some more, but since you've said you've never had it before, I figured I should take into possibility that you may not like them. If you do like either, you'll likely be getting a lot more.

There are also four red velvet cupcakes, since giving only tarts felt a bit off.

Moving onto your questions, the kitchens... are not actually far at all— they're just across the corridor.... Now that you ask that, I get an idea of how lazy I am...

Yours truly,
Pam

XXXIt had been quite a surprise when he found a package of tarts and cupcakes waiting for him in his room. Despite his own gift of baked goods, Akari had genuinely not thought Pam might send him some of her blueberry tarts. How sweet! And what were those, red velvet cupcakes? He carefully bit into one. "This is really good," he mumbled aloud. Wait, why was he talking to himself? Did Pam talk to herself? Lumi gave him the side eye. Red velvet was probably his favourite cake flavour, if only for the fact that he couldn't really think of any other cake flavours. There was, what, vanilla and chocolate and... funfetti?

XXXFunfetti was a strange invention.

XXXAkari was a bit conflicted over Pam's letter. Not wanting to just walk across the corridor to the Kitchens was unexpected. Personally, he'd dash around Mahoutokoro's entire complex just to end up back where he started with a smile on his face. I'd make the trip to the Kitchens for her. It was an odd thought, but wouldn't he do that for any of his friends? Well, more specifically Hikari, but that aside...

XXXMore importantly, he didn't know how to respond to that. He had already written the word 'oh' without thinking, and he couldn't cross that out now. He had been trying to go along the lines of 'that's interesting,' but that felt mildly offensive. Akari sighed to himself before crossing out the new sentence. Should he just go get another piece of parchment?

XXX...nah. Hopefully Pam wouldn't think on it too hard.
XXXPam,

XXXI do suppose that is understandable. Is Lumi prone to stealing things? Is that something she has done before? I am very glad to hear you enjoyed them, it means all my retried attempts did not go to waste. ;) No, bundt cakes are usually topped with powdered sugar, but I ran out of that, and we had marshmallows, so I just melted some and used that instead. I'm glad to hear you liked them all!

XXXI'll keep that in mind. Brownies are a very classic chocolate treat. Thank you for the blueberry tarts and red velvet cupcakes! They were delicious. I think red velvet is my favourite cake flavour. The tarts were nice too, but I prefer the cupcakes. :)

XXXOh. That's I think it would be very pleasant to live so close to the kitchens. Perhaps it wouldn't feel so far if you recruited a friend to walk with you?

Summer had settled quietly over the Graham household. The windows had been thrown open to let the breeze wander through the house, carrying with it the distant chatter of neighbours and the occasional birdsong from the garden. Somewhere in the kitchen, something sizzled gently in a pan. Perched at the kitchen table with Lumi dozing on the back of her chair, Pam unfolded Akari's latest letter.

The first half disappeared beneath her eyes without much incident.

Then—

I think red velvet is my favourite cake flavour.

She stared at the sentence for another second before calling towards the kitchen, where her father was making their lunch, "Papa."

"Hm?"

"You win this one."

Silence.

"Win what, sorry?"

"The cupcakes, he liked them more."

There was a suspicious amount of satisfaction in the hum that followed. "I told you one dessert wasn't enough."

"Not fair!" Pam whined at absolutely nobody before continuing.

Her eyes drifted lower.

Perhaps it wouldn't feel so far if you recruited a friend to walk with you.

...

You know what, I'll come back to that sentence in a minute.

Eventually.

Probably.

For now, she turned her attention back to the beginning of the letter, reached for a fresh sheet of parchment, and set pen to paper.
Akari,

Well, Lumi is normally well behaved, but she does tend to do stuff just to spite me occasionally. So if you catch her stealing something, it's probably my fault.

I'm really glad you liked the cupcakes! Red velvet is a flavor I really love and make often, so I'm glad you enjoyed it too.

As for what you... suggested, I suspect the walk itself isn't the obstacle.

The social interaction beforehand is.

Tell me about Japan. Unfortunately, my very, very limited knowledge of Japan comes from all the anime and dramas I've binge-watched at a go, so... it's not a lot of trusted information. What's the place like?

I heard the summer camp this year was being held at Hogwarts. Do you plan to attend?
