steam, clicking shoes, and chattering voices filled seraphina’s senses as she and her family shuffled through king’s cross station and approached the divider between platform’s 9 and 10. seraphina was bubbling over with excitement, each stride she made bringing her closer to her goal of becoming an incredible witch like her older sister evangeline.

evangeline started her journey at hogwarts 4 years prior, each summer returning home with marvelous stories about quidditch matches, talking portraits, and sweets that could make you breathe fire. throughout those 4 years, seraphina eagerly awaited her eleventh birthday and her acceptance letter to fly through the mail. the day that it arrived, (july 15th, she would never forget) she was so overwhelmed with excitement that she knocked over her breakfast racing to the front door and sobbed.

smiling brightly at her recollection, she looked over at evangeline, who strode toward the platform divider with a quiet yet palpable confidence. she paused to wrap her parents in a tight hug, offering one last cheerful wave over her shoulder. “see you on the other side,” evangeline grinned, giving her sister a wink before breaking into a run and disappearing through the divider. it was only when seraphina looked away when she noticed she was gripping the trolley for dear life, knuckles turning white.

as excited as seraphina was, she was also undeniably nervous. the questions had been swirling around her mind for weeks, growing deafening loud as she stared down the platform divider.“obviously evangeline told me loads, but what is hogwarts really like? what if i don’t like the house i’m in? what if i’m put in slytherin? is slytherin really as bad as students say, anyway?” she knew the castle from evangeline's stories but stories could only prepare someone so much. soon, she would have to navigate it all on her own.

when the uncertainty became too much, she turned to her parents, voicing her concerns. her mother celestine smiled knowingly.

"when i first went to hogwarts, i worried about exactly the same thing, honey," she admitted with a laugh. "however, i was sorted into hufflepuff, and i couldn't imagine it being any other way. the sorting hat is not trying to test you, sweetheart. it sees things about you that you haven't discovered yet and chooses the place where you'll have the best chance to grow. no matter which house you end up in, it'll be where you're meant to be." even her father rowan, despite having no magical family lineage, gently reassured her,"your house won't decide who you are, sera. that's up to you. what matters is that you stay curious, work hard, and be kind to people. everything else will fall into place."

seraphina ran and embraced her parents tightly. “goodbye, i’ll write to you all lots,” she said, quickly swallowing to suppress the lump forming in her throat. she turned around, wheeling her cart forward and positioning herself a few feet from the divider. she took one last look at her family. rowan gave her an encouraging nod and celestine smiled with quiet pride. she gripping the trolley with both hands and closed her eyes. taking a big deep breath, seraphina walked straight toward the divider, her pace quickening with each step. she braced herself before gliding smoothly through the wall and onto platform 9 ¾.

on the other side stood evangeline, enthusiastically waving her arms beside the brilliant scarlet hogwarts express train sitting on the platform. at that moment, all of seraphina’s worries melted away and were replaced with impenetrable excitement. She sprinted over to her sister, and together they boarded the train.
