General The Hufflepuff Table 2019-2020

Adventuring with @Clifton Troublefield, @Alina Rosier, @Lindsey Springhall, @Annie Morgan, and @Aurelia Yang

Two more girls arrived at the table, one introducing herself as Annie and saying that she was a prefect. Alexa had met a prefect on the train, and understood that they were students with more responsibilities than the average student. She seemed nice, and she made sure to include the girl Aurelia, whom Alexa had just noticed was sitting near them. Gosh, there were so many people!

Annie and Aurelia spoke for a bit about homesickness, and Alexa suddenly felt a pang of it herself. All these people she didn’t know, all these new things, were very overwhelming to take in all at once. She mostly found herself sitting quietly and observing.

Lindsay talked about her family, some of them being in France. “I don’t have much of an extended family myself,” Alexa chimed in, feeling braver. “My mom has a sister who lives in England. I’m Scottish myself,” she said with a little pride. But then she thought, of course everyone knows your Scottish, silly. They can hear your accent! Oh well, it didn’t hurt to say it. She was getting more comfortable talking.

She saw Clifton whisper something to Alina and wondered what they were talking about, as Alina had looked unhappy briefly. She thought about asking if she was okay, but didn’t want to intrude. Maybe when they had a private moment later she could ask.

Clifton mentioned exploring Hogwarts, and Alina joked about not being the adventuring type, though to Alexa it was obvious she was. Here was a bold, confident girl, if ever she had seen one! She admired that, and smiled warmly at Alina. Hopefully they could be friends.

“I would love to go exploring!” Alexa said, excitement creeping into her voice. “Maybe after we get settled in for tonight, we could go tomorrow? Who wants to go?”

Annie nodded her head in understanding as the girl, who introduced herself as Aurelia explained her homesickness to her. She glanced around the giant dinning hall seeing other older students interact with younger students who were either very excited or nervous. "Trust me, homesickness is going to be the last thing you'll be worrying about. This castle is giant and finding classes will be pretty fun for the first couple of days, you will know this place inside and out by how many times you get lost."

She gave a small laugh at the thought but then followed it quickly back up with a less joking tone. "But hey, sometimes getting lost allows your mind to wander and be free from worries, or you start panicking but if that happens just try to remain calm.. teachers are pretty forgiving on the first couple of days." The brunette nodded her head but then got caught off guard when Aurelia mentioned how pretty her eyes were. The Prefect blushed at the compliment, slightly from embarrassment.

The girl hadn't given much thought to her blue-green eyes but she felt happy at the other girl for mentioning them. "Oh, ah thank you. My name's Annie Morgan by the way, I must've forgotten to introduce myself.. My bad!" Annie got flustered due to forgetting something so simple and just jumping straight into conversation.

Her ears perked at the mention of exploring the castle and a small grin spread across her face. She turned to the boy who had mentioned it and kinda gave him a "oh are you going to be troublesome?" look. Well- there are places off limits for first years and all students in general so as long as you travel in a group, don't get lost, miss classes or stay out past the 10pm mark then you are fine."

Annie nodded to another girl sat beside the boy who mentioned the idea of exploring as well, that is after they get settled in. "Oh yes, after dinner we will be heading up to the common room and dormitories. I'll take the girl's to theirs of course and one of the male prefects, probably Jack or Quinn to your's. The dormitories are actually very nice quality, you'll sleep like a boulder tonight hopefully." She also heard a remark about other houses hopefully joining them on the adventure from another girl at the table. "It depends, but just remember, none of the houses are bad or evil even if people say that." Annie was referring mainly to Slytherin, which she had a few good reputations and friendships with some of them.

She glanced up at the sky expecting to see owls flying in any minute but she forgot that it was the first day of school. The girl sighed, missing her owl who had been sent to her parents to let her know of her safe arrival. "Tomorrow you will be in for a treat at breakfast, especially if any of you receive letters." The Prefect chuckled and went back to her food, which had now flipped to desserts signaling the later part of the meal before each house would go their separate way. Lucky for Hufflepuff, they were only on the First Floor so it wasn't too many stairs for them and their full bellies.

"Oh, ah thank you. My name's Annie Morgan by the way, I must've forgotten to introduce myself.. My bad!"

Aurelia was excited to have met someone who seemed to know her way around, and felt so comforted by the fact that now she had someone she could rely on if she needed any help. Before she got a chance to say anything, she heard a boy with dirty-blonde hair speak.

"We were actually talking about exploring the castle sometime. You think any kids from the other houses would want to join?

That was her cue. “That sounds like a great idea!” chirped Aurelia, hoping she hadn’t spoken too late.

The idea of exploring a castle, let alone the castle that she was going to be attending, was just unbelievable. The reality of attending a magical school hadn’t sunk in yet for it was too early. Perhaps soon… She had read about castles in books, but had never actually been in one. And she knew. Oh, she knew. Things in books were never as accurate as actually experiencing them. They always sounded so magical, and it felt like the place where dreams came true.

She was giddy with excitement while she listened to the group talk amongst themselves, picking up things here and there. A girl she had not met yet mentioning to another that she was Scottish, in a beautiful Scottish accent. It was captivating.

"Well- there are places off limits for first years and all students in general so as long as you travel in a group, don't get lost, miss classes or stay out past the 10pm mark then you are fine.” cautioned Annie. At that moment, Aurelia noticed the shiny Prefect badge on her uniform.

"What’s that badge for?” Aurelia asked inquisitively, indicating that she was asking about the badge on her uniform. It was kind of in the shape of a yellow shield with gold borders. There was a matching gold ribbon curling around it with the word “Prefect" on it. What’s a prefect? she wondered. She paused for Annie’s reply.

Um, hi.” The voice seemed to come from the girl with the long, straight golden-brown hair. Aurelia turned to face the girl. "May I know where are you from? You looked like from China, Korea, or Japan. My grandmother’s a Chinese.

Oh, hi! Um… my appa—oh uh I mean my dad, is English, and my mum is Korean-Chinese. So I’m actually kind of a mix of both.” For a brief moment, Aurelia paused as if she had finished talking, but then continued. “Oh my mistake, um my name’s Aurelia, it’s nice to meet you!

Aeri sat down. The Hufflepuffs who came before her were laughing and talking. This is too overwhelming, she thought to herself. The plates on the table looked shiny and elegant, unlike the usual ceramics she was used to at home. She looked down at her empty plate, seeing streaks of yellow– reflections of the Hufflepuff banners right above their long table.

She glanced at the student to her right. He looked just as shy as she was. He was silent, observant, and probably also feeling overwhelmed by the cheerfulness of the people around them. At least I'm not alone. We can be silent together.

Aeri took a portion of everything from the platters of food within the direct proximity of her small arms. Everything tasted so good! She almost forgot what her mother's cooking tasted like. She noticed that her goblet was empty, and the pitcher of water (or maybe juice?) was too far from her reach. She wondered if this was the chance to start a conversation with the silent guy seated next to her, or if she should just finish the meal and ignore her thirst.

She realized she was staring way too long at her seatmate, and he had already noticed. His face resembled confusion, with a slight hint of concern. And he finally asked, "Can I get you anything?"

Tallis was overwhelmed to say the least, everyone at the table already seemed to have buddied up, they where so cheerful and upbeat. Tallis decided to sit away from the others, she didn't want to bother anyone. She saw the food that lined the table and the sparkling silver platters sent sparkles into every direction. She had never eaten much so she grabbed a piece of bread from one of the many platters of food and started to pick at it. She looked around at her fellow Hufflepuffs, observing each of them, like she usually did, she still questioned how on earth she could have been placed with such cheerful looking people. Her parents would have fit right in they were always so cheerful, she how the other hand was like a little black cloud that people want to get rid but can't. She decided to distract herself from these thoughts and looked around the great hall. It was beautiful, full of floating candles and paintings. She looked up at the room and was amazed by the night sky of stars that twinkled down on them. It was odd to think that from her view that they were small like beetles but to the stars they were the beetles. She sighed and looked around her once again, wondering if maybe there was someone like her in the crowd of talking and laughing people. She decided to forget those thoughts and focused on the piece of bread she had been working on.

After Sam got sorted, she looked over at the Hufflepuff table and found an area that no one was sitting at. She sat down and grabbed some food and tried to eat and even though she wanted to meet people, she didn't want to make things awkward and not be able to hold a conversation. Sam remembered that she had her satchel and decided to read while she ate and to try and pass the time.

She forgot what book she had and when she pulled it out it was titled, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. She decided to start the book from the beginning because she hadn't read it in awhile. As she was reading she could hear how everyone else was getting along with each other and no matter how hard she tried to bury herself in a book, she still wished that she wasn't so anti-social and scared to talk to other people.

There was a group of Slytherin's behind her. Probably older students she thought as she could hear them talking. She heard them say things like "ew. Who dyes their hair blue?" and "oh my gosh a bookworm." Sam kept her head down and continued reading and didn't care about what they were saying about her even though they were laughing after every remark that was being made.

Silver couldn't believe it. He was here at Hogwarts, at last. And, he had been sorted into a House, unlike he feared would happen. Hufflepuff wasn't bad; everyone was friendly, at least. He hoped he would learn to belong here eventually. That is, if he didn't belong already.

He sat down next to a girl who had her head buried in a book. Surprisingly, to him at least; weren't bookworms supposed to go into Ravenclaw? Then he heard what the Slytherins were saying behind them. Silver was mad; how dare they make fun of a 1st year; nevermind that he was also a first year!

He turned around and said loudly, "I hope snakes know that badgers eat them; it would be a shame if they got eaten." Hopefully that would shut them up.

"Ooohoo, a badger with bite!" One of them cooed mockingly.

"Yeah, you better watch out, I'll eat you," Silver retorted. He nudged the girl next to him, who still had her nose in her book. "Hey, don't listen to them; they're a bunch of bullies. I'll be your friend if you want? I like books too, but mostly I like to play pranks on people. How about it?"

Every few minutes or so, Sam would stop reading and watch the new young witches and wizards get sorted. She could tell that some of them were nervous about being here. What's there to be nervous about? It's not like there are Dementors and Giant Spiders out there waiting to kill us. Sam Chuckled at her own sarcasm and wen back to reading.

She noticed another first-year come up to her. When he sat down next to her she got nervous and ignored him. She continued reading. He had noticed that some of the Slytherins behind us were talking bad about her and he said some stuff to the Slytherins which put a tiny grin on her face.

The boy nudged her. "Hey, don't listen to them; they're a bunch of bullies. I'll be your friend if you want? I like books too, but mostly I like to play pranks on people. How about it?" Sam put her bookmark in her book and sat it on the table. She turned her body towards the boy. "I wouldn't mind being friends." Sam smiled at the boy and quickly looked away. She started getting nervous and started staring at her food and then she remembered the boy saying something about pranks. Sam looked back at the boy. "So what kind of pranks are you into?" While waiting for the boys response, she opened back up her book and continued reading.
