Whispers on the Water

The lake was so still it looked more like polished glass than water, reflecting the towering mountains and endless line of pine trees surrounding its shores. A gentle breeze skimmed across its surface, carrying the fresh scent of fresh earth and cedar as Maddison wandered along the shoreline lazily, letting the smooth stones crunch under my trainers.
Up a bit further ahead, she spotted a tall guy crouched near the waters edge with a handful of stones. Silently, he threw one, skimming it across the lake's surface, watching it bounce before sinking beneath the ripples, breaking the glass like illusion.
''Impressive'' she said, genuinely impressed, picking up a stone herself before trying, watching it barely bounce once before sinking beneath the surface. ''Oh come on! Seriously!'' she groaned.
The sound of skimming stones bouncing across the lake's surface blended in with the sound of birdsong and the breeze, almost like a soundtrack to nature itself.
''I'm Maddison, a first year slytherin'' she said smiling. ''And i swear i have more talent in other sports, just maybe not skimming stones'' she laughs, shocked by her own lack of skill in that particular area.
''You must do this often to be this good at it''

Clark was crouching infront of the shore, watching the invisible line, where the stoney beach went over into the cold but clear water of the Great Lake, that was expanding right in front of them. Without saying much more, his hand sifted through the smooth stones scattered beneath his feet until he found one that almost was perfectly flat. It had a light weight, and a perfect oval shape, and it just felt like the right one, when he went over the smooth surface with his thumb.
“This one works better.“, he said quietly to the girl beside him. He had noticed her, when she also tried, but failed to skip a stone over the water surface. “The flatter the stone the easier it is to keep it balamced while it spins and skim.“, Clark continued to explain, before he went quiet again for some time.
Only after a period of quietness overcame them both, after the Girl, named Maddison had introduced herself, he realised she was waiting. Waiting for an answer of him.
“I am…Clark.“, he said.
A small pause followed.
“Also a first year…like you.“
With only two small sentences his introduction to Maddison had ended, and Clark didn‘t feel the urge to add anything more, because what was there left to add?
When Maddison than asked him if he came to the Lake quite often, he let his eyes wander over the water, that reflected the surroundings that were nearby, their picture only disturbed by an occasional wave.
“Well yes I do…It‘s a lot quieter here than in the castle..“, he admitted, while his thumb continued his strokes over the stone he was holding, trying to ground himself, while also trying to keep himself calm, because he felt his hands getting sweatier, and how his heart hammered a bit more quicker now.
After a long moment of just starring out into the nature, he focussed himself back onto the conversation between him and Maddison.
“If you like…I can teach you how to skim those stones.“

Her smile softened as Clark introduced himself. He wasn't particularly talkative but she really didn't mind. There was something comforting about someone who didn't feel the need to fill every silence. Out here, surrounded by the gentle lapping of the lake and the whispering breeze through the trees, quiet felt natural.
''Nice to meet you properly, Clark" she replied warmly.
Glancing down at the stone in her own hand, she compared it to the one in his. It quickly became rather obvious why hers had sunk without so much as a second bounce.
"So that was my mistake. Just picking up the first stone I saw." she laughed quietly.
As he offered to teach her, she looked back at him, surprised by the invitation. He seemed shy, almost hesitant and yet he'd still offered to help.
"I'd like that." she answered with a genuine smile.
Maddison crouched down beside him again, this time sifting through the stones carefully, before picking a smooth flat one after a few moments. ''What about this one? Is it more suitable?'' she asked, holding it out to him before looking toward the shimmering lake.
"I have an awful feeling i'll still be dreadful at it" she admitted with a quiet laugh, "but i suppose practice makes progress, and everyone has to start somewhere."
She stood, ready to give it another go, hopeful that this attempt might redeem her poor performances perviously.
