Potions class, yes potions wasn’t the best but Jay would rather be stuck in the dingy underground dungeons than upstairs in history listening to the professor talk about horrifyingly boring subjects about ancient civilizations and how they formed blah blah blah.

At least here Jay was actually doing something and not just listening, drawing and taking two percent of the notes she should be doing. The Professor was talking about how to each ingredient reacted with the others when she noticed it, there was a girl in the classroom who piqued her interest.

A Gryffindor with big green eyes and blonde hair was sitting near her in the classroom and surprisingly, Jay had never noticed her before.

Maybe she moved seats or something?

She wondered to herself before going back to focus on the lesson, drawing a layout of the classroom from her angle. She looked up, looked down, drew what she saw and this would repeat for a few minutes until she put down her pencil and used a quill to write her notes, look up at the board, look down at her notes and write.

This would continue for the next hour of class time until Jay either fell asleep or something else happened around her and she focused on that.

Well for some reason, today she had a feeling something would happen, but not around her this time.

Haeli hated the dungeons. The air down here was a miserable mix of cold and humid, which was an absolute disaster for her hair. She had just started using a new anti-frizz serum that promised miracles, but clearly, it was no match for Hogwarts castle underground physics. Every single time she stepped into this classroom, her hair expanded into a wild halo. It drove her crazy because she felt it made her look completely unkempt.

Shaking off the distraction, she suddenly realized she hadn't heard a word the Potions professor had said for the last five minutes. Worse, her parchment was completely blank. Haeli had to take notes; otherwise, absolutely nothing in this class made sense. Pushing her shoulders back, she sat up a little taller and readied her quill. She began scribbling down as much as she could manage, copying definitions and ingredient lists whether they seemed important or not. Surprisingly, once she actually paid attention, she found herself quite interested in Professor Asmaralaya’s lecture. She listened intently, trying her best to follow the complex magical theories, even if half of it didn't make a lick of sense.

Despite her sudden burst of academic focus, Haeli’s eyes eventually began to wander. A girl sitting just a few cauldrons away caught her attention. She wore the green-and-silver colors of Slytherin. Normally, Haeli prided herself on not judging a book by its cover, but something about this girl gave her an immediate, off-kilter feeling. Haeli felt a little guilty for it. The girl was probably perfectly nice and had done nothing wrong, but her demeanor just seemed entirely careless, from the slouch in her chair to the way she minded her own business. Haeli glanced up at the professor’s desk, then back down to her parchment, deciding to just let it go. If she simply ignored the girl and never spoke to her, everything would be completely fine. She would never have to worry about the careless Slytherin again.

For the rest of the hour, Haeli did exactly that. She minded her own business, letting her thoughts drift happily toward dinner and her friends. She also thought about the mountain of homework she had left sitting by her bedside table this morning. She really should have started it, but the morning sun had been too tempting, and she had opted for a walk to the Great Lake with one of her roommates instead. Now, it looked like she would have to pay the ultimate price. "One whole night of reading, and absolutely no sleep!" Haeli smiled sarcastically to herself at the thought.

That was when she felt it. A sudden, sharp tingle prickled at the back of her neck, creeping down her upper back. It wasn't the chill of the dungeons. It was a deep, intuitive warning. A heavy feeling settled in her gut that something terrible or chaotic was going to happen before the day was over. She wasn't sure exactly when or what, and the mystery drove her crazy. Mentally, she ran through a list of all her friends, trying to guess who might run into trouble. It never even occurred to her that the trouble might be looking for her. After all, the only things left on her schedule were a quiet dinner and a date with her textbooks.

The lesson dragged on and the murky atmosphere of the underground chamber was starting to get to Jay, her eyes grew heavier and heavier as she began to droop forwards.

Maybe just a little-

Suddenly someone dropped something, whether it was a cauldron, glass vials or scales Jay didn’t know, but it made her jump and woke her up, the previous ideas of tiredness vanished as the shock of the noise settled into her.

In the name of Hades… WHY!?

Jay thought angrily, her hair turning a teal colour as she stewed in her emotions. Now that she was more awake she could see out of the corner of her eye that the girl she had noticed, the one with the green eyes, was watching her, bored and annoyed that someone had woken her up, Jay scribbled something on a little piece of paper and flicked it down the table at her.

In the meantime Jay took more notes, writing down whatever was on the board had gotten her good enough marks last year so it was proven that her method of note taking actually worked.

She laughed quietly to herself as she thought about her roommates intense notes and homework assignments that Jay had found lying around earlier that morning when she had gotten up earlier.

Haeli couldn't force herself to pay attention any longer. She was trying, but the girl on the other side of the room rubbed her so entirely the wrong way that concentration became impossible. Even while staring straight ahead, Haeli could still see her out of the corner of her eye.

At the front of the room, Professor Asmaralaya droned on about the delicate nature of potion ingredients. He emphasized precision, warning that a microscopic error could ruin an entire brew. Having already read the chapter, boredom quickly claimed Haeli, and she let her mind wander.

Her subconscious betrayed her. Instead of daydreaming, her eyes drifted exactly where they shouldn't. Across the room, the girl who had entered with blonde hair now sported a vibrant shade of teal.

But how? There wasn't time to dye it, Haeli thought.

The idea of a mid-class dye job was absurd, and she stifled a laugh at her own ridiculous thought. If her hair had actually changed color, only one magical explanation made sense: she had to be a Metamorphmagus.

Lost in theory, Haeli didn't realize she was staring directly at her rival. Part of her didn't care, actively hoping the scrutiny caused discomfort. The rational part felt a sudden prick of guilt, hoping the girl hadn't noticed.

She had.

A tightly folded note slid across the table, halting directly in front of Haeli. She knew opening it would invite conflict. Yet, a dark, secret part of her craved a fight. Disregarding her house, her grades, and her friends, she unfolded the paper. Written in elegant cursive, the message read: Done staring? You have a problem?

Fury flooded Haeli's veins. A sudden heat rushed to her face, and she knew her cheeks were burning crimson. She hated letting this girl get under her skin, but the urge to lash out was overwhelming. She needed an outlet.

She forced herself to wait four agonizing minutes until the bell rang. As the classroom dissolved into a flurry of packing bags and shuffling feet, Haeli seized her moment. She marched across the room, stopping directly in front of the teal-haired girl.

Plastering a sugary, sarcastic smile across her face, she spoke. "Hi, I'm Haeli. I got your note, and I wanted you to know that I do, in fact, have a problem. I can't quite define it, but your little message just pushed my absolute last button. If I were you, I would run along. Don't speak to me, and don't even breathe in my direction again."

Haeli spun on her heel to walk away. Before she could take a second step, a tight grip clamped around her forearm. A thrill of satisfaction spiked through her anger. She had gotten exactly what she wanted.

Jay listened to Haeli go on about how for no reason at all she hated Jay. For no reason. How could someone do that? How!?

I guess it’s just me then… my dad hates me and so does everyone else around me I’m such a mean little bitch o just have to be rude and pushy with everyone around me don’t I? FOR FUCKS SAKE WHY CAN’T I JUST BE NICE!?!

Jay had grabbed ahold of Haeli’s arm in a mix of rage and emptiness without even realising it and quickly let go when she noticed what she was doing, a sick feeling of guilt settling down on her shoulders like a permanent rain cloud.

Was I… about to hit her? Was I? Oh gods what’s wrong with me?

The girl had done nothing wrong, she was just voicing her opinions, and even if they were rude Jay knew that it was true anyway. The cold and damp air of the dungeon seemed to sharpen around her and Jay gritted her teeth, pushing her nails hard into her skin so that little droplets of blood trailed down her fingers and fell to the floor.

It’s all my fault this girl hates me, she didn’t do anything wrong but why am I so worked up over it?! She’s just voicing her opinions but why do I care so much? And the fact I can’t even walk away from this tells me I’m selfish. I just want an outlet and I can’t take my emotions and feelings out on anyone

The damp air was still sharp and Jay was struggling to breathe and it was making her lightheaded and dizzy as the classroom spun and everything swayed slightly, she wasn’t thinking.

She wasn’t thinking.

She wasn’t thinking as she grabbed a bowl of whatever gross looking ingredients lay on the table and threw it at Haeli as hard as she could, aiming for her back.

See… don’t you see you’ll always be like this, rude, mean and always the one to act first, no wonder people hate you

As Haeli walked away, she felt a tight grip clamp around her forearm. A devilish smile tugged at her lips, matching the sudden spark of anticipation lighting up inside her. Even when the grip loosened and the girl let go, Haeli remained rooted to the spot. Her mind raced, questioning her own motives. Did she really want a confrontation? Did she want an enemy?

Before she could find an answer, a sudden, sharp shock radiated through her skull. A dull, massive ache immediately took hold, making her pulse throb painfully behind her eyes. Assuming the girl had just struck her with something heavy, Haeli’s caution completely vanished. The stinging pain replaced her hesitation with a surge of heat and pure adrenaline.

Whipping her head around so quickly that the room blurred, she snatched a thick book from the nearest desk. Her fingers dug hard into the cover, securing a solid grip. She wound her arms back and swung with all her might toward the girl's bicep. Using that momentum, Haeli followed through immediately. She clenched her fist, transferred her weight, and threw a heavy, decisive punch aimed right above the girl's right eye, feeling the solid impact of her knuckles connecting cleanly with her target.

Jay felt the impact hit her face, hard and solid, a real hit.

She stepped back for a second and paused, her head tilted backwards as she took deep breaths, quite heavily. Her chest getting tighter and tighter so that breathing felt like someone was stabbing her a thousand times over and over again.

Straightening up she paused, looking down at the desk behind her and thinking about tipping the steaming potion on the girl's head but restrained herself from doing so. She didn't know what was in that potion and if the students who made it had fucked up or not. Jay could kill someone doing that.

Whipping around to glare at the girl in front of her, she hissed through gritted teeth. "Wow, I have never met a witch who doesn't fight without her wand" Jay knew most wizards and witches preferred to fight with wands, not their hands. The wands gave them the upper advantage. Jay however preferred her fists over the piece of wood she kept in her bag or back pocket. It hadn't done a whole lot to help her recently and nor had anyone else.

If she brings out that damn wand then she's just a coward.

Jay thought angrily as she lunged out and slammed her foot into the girl’s stomach, sending her sprawling into the wall and hitting her back against it with a loud thud.

A twinge of guilt flared up in Jay but she pushed it aside and waited to see if the girl would go for another attack.

The class that day would be peaceful. That was what the professor had thought at first when he gave the lesson to the students as usual, until he noticed something unpleasant on the students' side. He ignored it since it didn't disturb the flow of the class, but still took a look, in case something had escalated.

Once the class ended, the Professor cleaned the remaining mess that the students were unable to clean, as usual. He was also about to prepare the materials for the next class. His eyes looked at the students, which made her senses become more aware than usual. He wondered why they were still in the class. He didn't mind them since he needed to finish his tasks as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, The Fate forbade him from having a nice, peaceful, and happy time that day. The Slytherin girl, whom he remembered as Miss Valkyrie, did something horrendous. He threw a bowl of ingredients to Miss Randall. The Professor could only palm his head. He really didn't want to get more work that day. He was tired enough.

If he wished that the Gryffindor would just report it to him and let it go, he would be disappointed. The girl, of course, retaliated with a similar kind of action. "Oh, the goodness, Fate," Lesmana whispered.

He walked swiftly towards them. In a calm and tired voice, he exclaimed, "Stop whatever you are doing!" He pulled Miss Valkyrie and stood between the students. He looked at them both with a disappointed look. A pause and void appeared between the three of them. "Now explain to me how this can happen. Both of you, start with Miss Valkyrie first. And no one can interrupt when the others are giving an explanation."

Jay heard the Professor shout before she was pulled away and he stood between the two of them and looked down at her, obviously disappointed but Jay couldn’t care less what he thought of her, yes he was her teacher but so what if he was disappointed in her? People often were anyways.

A small crowd had made their way around the three of them, as expected for a physical altercation in a classroom with a teacher present. Jay could hear them muttering and whispering, it reminded her all too well of those years in a muggle school, before she had come to Hogwarts when the older students would fight. Back then she was one of the wide eyed kids in the crowd.

Its like muggle school all over again, ugh that’s horrible

She thought bitterly, tapping her foot absentmindedly against the dungeon floor “Now explain to me how this can happen. Both of you, start with Miss Valkyrie first. And no one can interrupt when the others are giving an explanation.” She rolled her eyes as he said this, now this place really did remind her of a muggle school.

Now that she thought about it, the reason the whole thing started in the first place was because apparently, Haeli got weird vibes from Jay and got all bitchy about it. With a sigh, Jay explained in a monotone and unbothered tone. “Apparently, Haeli got weird vibes from me and then she said something along the lines of…” Jay had to think for a moment before she remembered what Haeli has said, it was a quick thing of the moment and Jay was half asleep “yeah, it was along the lines of: if I were you, I would run along. Don't speak to me, and don't even breathe in my direction again or something stupid like that.” Jay snorted, amused now that the tension had died down, for her at least.

“Oh and she did that because she was staring at me, I asked if she had a problem and then she got weird vibes” Jay shrugged, as if nothing odd had just happened. “I mean, I’m weird but I didn’t know there was a problem with her until she said there was one”

It also hasn’t just been Haeli, it had been months of squashing down her anger and then she had released it on the first person she could, Jay wasn’t proud of it but then again, Haeli had been quite rude anyway so Jay didn’t exactly feel bad about it.

“If you’re gonna give me detention you might as well, I don’t have anything else to do” she said, stifling a yawn as the adrenaline she had been running off dissipated and left her, tired and annoyed.

Her hair went from blonde to a sharp dark red as her annoyance grew and everything around her her became too much, the colours, temperature, smells all of it overwhelming her quickly as she stood there and waited for the Professor to reply to her statement, to give her detention, to expel her, anything.
