𝔗he tables were set, the waiters were ready, and Cordelia and Lysander van Elst were nervous. They didn’t show it, but Emma knew. Twelve, almost thirteen years in their household had taught Emma their anxious ticks, many of which surfaced before events like these.
The annual summer Pureblood ball was a tradition that dated back centuries, back to the English witches and wizards of the 15th century, hosting a noble midnight feast where everyone ate and drank till sunrise.
The times have changed, and much less food is involved now, but the infamous midnight to sunrise ball has persisted every year without fail.
And this year, the van Elsts are hosting.
They had their own annual parties and galas they hosted annually, but the pressure of the summer ball was a lot on Emma’s parents.
Emma, her sister Adelaide (who would be starting at Hogwarts this coming autumn), and Lysander were standing in the entrance hall, their two resident irish wolfhounds, Caspian and Romulus, were circling excitedly.
Cordelia was fussing about the napkin-dragons placed on the tables to the staff, her uptight voice echoing against the high ceilings.
The family house elf, Clover, escaped the room with a wide-eyed gaze, away from Cordelia’s eyeline just in time. If she had stayed any longer the van Elst woman might have fussed about something else and gave it to the elf to fix.
Emma gave her a sympathetic look as the Clover retreated to her quarters, the work done for the day.
Cordelia finally came out to join the group, and smoothed her dress down. Apparently everything was acceptably in order now, and they were ready for guests.

The van Elst townhouse floorplan
THE PARLOUR ;
the parlour is airy and full of people. this is the main room of the party. lysander and cordelia are circling the guests, making chatter and seeing if people are having a good time. servers make rounds here.

THE LIBRARY ;
this is a room to go to if you need a bit of peace and quiet. but be careful, its also known for being a room frequented by quarrelling individuals who need space to argue.

THE BALLROOM ;
what is normally used as the dining room has lost its long table to become a ballroom. its another place filled with guests. servers make their rounds here. has a door that exits onto the grounds. (the grounds are another place you can go)

THE ATRIUM ;
humid and secluded, its filled with plants and flowers from cordelia and emma's garden.

OFF LIMITS ;
the kitchens and bedrooms are off limits. if someone catches you sneaking in, you'll be in trouble.

at the end of your thread, you can choose to move to a different room. i'll owl you with what you find in there (sorta like dnd ig)
if people are already there, (aka their thread takes place in there), i'll tell you, so acknowledge and interact with them as necessary.
let the drama begin!!!

A few weeks before school ended, my parents got a letter from the Van Elst; another pureblood family.
I knew their daughter- Emma. In fact, she was part of N.O.B.L.E- a very reputable name: Van Elst.

So as soon as I landed back in Nottingham, my parents instructed me to remember the date: 8th July.
And soon enough, we stood in front of the Van Elst Manor.
The moment we arrived, I already knew this wasn’t just a party. It never is, with families like ours.

The Van Elst manor loomed ahead, all polished stone and glowing windows. My father Gabriel Cadell stepped out first, offering my mother his hand as usual. I followed a second later, smoothing down my dress, my eyes already scanning everything.
I decided to bring Medusa with me, carefully placed in my purse.

We knocked and inside, it was exactly what I expected: grand.
I believe we were the first to arrive, I mean the Cadell were known to be precisely on time.
I stayed close to my parents for exactly as long as required.

“Be polite” my mother said under her breath

“I always am” I replied quietly, though we both knew that depended on the situation.

"You're representing the Cadell, don't forget that" my father added, though it was just for the sake of saying something
"I always do" I reassured

Then I saw her.
Emma.
Of course she’d be here. This was her house.
Then my father spoke up, "Gabriel Cadell" he greeted, offering a hand "and this is my wife, Alexandra Cadell and my daughter Tes Cadell" he continued as my mother offered a warm smile. I don't know why he kept saying our last name but I went along with it.
"I believe you both are the same age, am I right?" he asked, I nodded as a response

By the time I reached her to offer my hand, I greeted, “Van Elst” I said, my voice calm, "Nice seeing you outside of school"

I tilted my head slightly, studying her properly now.
My gaze drifted past her for a moment, toward the open rooms beyond: the ballroom, the parlour, the quiet promise of the library.

Then back to her, “So” I added, quieter this time, almost like an aside meant only for her, “Are we the first to arrive?”

Aelis’s parents always taught her to be at time. No stylish late entrances. Always on time. Today, wasn’t new. They even almost arrived too early, thanks to Aelis who “magically” forgot something. Her father knocked at the door, holding an expensive bottle of red wine.

She didn’t want to be there, normally she would fake being sick just to escape these balls. Ugh, just thinking about smiling and showing interest in boring matters made her want to sleep.

Her parents didn’t really talk to her since they learned she was in Slytherin. They still chatted about important matters, but for them… their daughter seems to be a ghost. Knowing they would act like that, she would’ve begged the sorting hat to place her in Ravenclaw, just to please her parents.

She remembers those whispers behind her back, when she walked home for the summer break… her grandmother disapproving glare and her cousins mockery. Her first year wasn’t the best but it wasn’t the worse.

When the house elf opened the door and letted them in, Aelis followed her parents, behind, head down and silent. That’s what her mother told her to be. “Only talk when asked to.” she said. It’s not like Aelis wanted to open her mouth this evening. When her parents dispersed in the crowd of the parlour, she decided to walk to the library, silent as a little mouse. Her heels clicked on the wooden floor and her blue dress rustling, these was the only sounds in the library.

People say I’m weird, I say I’m limited edition.

Avery was not expecting to be forced to a pureblood ball now that she was finally old enough to make her own decisions. Her red dress swayed against her legs as she walked in. Her silky yet wavy brown hair braided expertly into a braid crown with curls cascading down her back. Courtesy of her aunt who was a master at hair. Avery has always wondered why she had never had a daughter. She would be an amazing girl mom.

Dylan stood rigid beside her. His muscles tensed. He was not a happy camper like her when it came to pureblood events. The only good thing that had come out of the argument was that the adults had agreed to let their children go alone. Believing they were old enough to handle themselves and not disgrace their superior bloodlines.

Avery knew that if her mother knew who she was with, she would be done for. A disgrace for dating a muggle born, but Avery didn’t care. This was her life. Her choice. If some purebloods couldn’t handle that, it was their loss.

Shaking the thoughts from her mind, Avery nudged a stiff Dylan forward as she walked ahead to mingle with the already gathering crowd. This was going to be an interesting night.

Be the change you wish to see
in the world.

Nick Trudged Behind his grandparents as they lectured him on behaviour and how he was lucky to be allowed to come to such a prestigious event catching snippets of “get better posture young man”, “Stop Slouching” and “we’re so happy for you that you managed to come.”
Yeah like I had a choice he thought to himself but said
Yes, I understand. Yes I promise to be on best behaviour and not disgrace the family
When they entered the parlour he heard his grandfather loudly whisper to his grandmother
This place is horrible if we were hosting it we wouldn’t have this cheap riff-raff. I honestly hoped that this family would actually provide us with decent expensive stuff don’t you agree dear. his grandmother nodded saying
Yes Dear
After this Nick just stood there smiling being polite whilst he grandparents mingled for what felt like hours and he was starting to get bored soon he was just looking around and then he noticed his granddad go up to someone he didn’t recognised who was with that Cadell Girl who was a Slytherin in his year who was known for being a pureblood supremacist and I’ve seen better balls than this when I was younger I remeber one when the entire mansion and everything inside it was solid gold these balls have gone down in richness recently. After a while they moved to the ballroom

Unbothered eyes drifted away, avoiding whatever the two firmly adult were saying as they made their way toward the entrance. One was a lady in an emerald velvet dress. Another was a gentleman in a black tuxedo. “Behave like an Astor. No tricks. Then we’ll do as promised.” Two piercing eyes looked down at the girl. Those were the last words she heard before she followed them through the gates.

The invitation had never truly been an invitation. After the Howler… after everything that had happened during her first year… refusing was no longer an option. Her parents expected her presence, her manners, and another evening proving that the youngest Astor daughter still remembered how to behave among respectable pureblood families. Well, actually, they did not need her here. The Astors were here to build connections within the Ministry. Events like these suited her older sisters far better, the delightful twins, the family’s little angels. Yuck! She could almost hear them laughing pretending to enjoy people conversation. So, why bring her? The answer seemed obvious enough. It was a punishment, keeping her away from what she loved, away from the only place that she felt safe.

Skylar absentmindedly adjusted the necklace around her neck. It itched, and so did the dress. She wondered why she had even bothered wearing something so uncomfortable when she would rather be covered in soil than silk. She stood behind her father like an idiot as if someone who waited to be involved in the talk. What are we supposed to talk about anyway? Besides her cousin, she barely knew the other Astors’ connections. Her aunt was now traveling in Africa, not here to save the day. And her uncle, whom she had never ever seen, was in Azkaban. What a wonderful story to talk to people. Sigh…

While her parents seemed busy greeting people, she quietly sneaked away to find some corner to loosen this tight necklace, or somewhere she could breathe freely.

Galas, balls, events, anniversaries were all the same to Angel, just a different term under a different blanket. She was used to lavish things such as these, the event in which would be the first time, the whole Dayes family would be invited, was hosted by the Van Elsts. Who presumed are a pureblood family. The name also carried great weight to it. Reputable and perhaps that was due to how their status as a pureblood benefited them greatly.

In regards to her own family, yes it would have been appropriate to say they too carry a reputable name and public relations. The Dayes family were business oriented and were keen on the culinary industry. So she would not be shocked if her presence in the townhouse would turn heads. Her family was getting more comfortable with getting inside the radar it seems. Had a feeling a lot of her own pureblood relations would be arriving there as well. Of course. However, another thought came across her mind. Being in a room full of purebloods was a gamble. Knowing some purebloods, they had a odd way of thinking.

As her arrival became more clear, the townhouse was grand and elegant. The atrium had a diversity of different species of plants and scenery. It was truly beautiful. As she went in, she took a breath and prepared for what will take place in her stay from now on. She recognized Tes Cadell, as always the lass would always show up with a familiar face. Who knows if she'd see more familiar faces in the future. But her presence was like any other not anything worth noting at least just for a little while.

"Hello Ms.Van Elst, it's a pleasure for you to invite me here." she chipped in, it was always her job to introduce the family much herself. Angel did in her view, an elevator pitch to Emma as it was her first time seeing her in person, though she mused she might've seen her in the corridors or a few classes, especially in the Slytherin common room. Her tone and composure, ever poised.

"who's that chick that's rocking kicks? She's gotta be from outta town"

Dylan above all else was not thrilled to be at yet another pureblood ball. He had much better things to waste his time with instead of working hard to keep his family’s good name and having to tread lightly when it came to sensitive topics. The only reason he has said yes to coming was for Avery’s sake. She didn’t deserve to suffer alone.

“You sure this was a good idea?” Dylan muttered as Avery playfully slapped his arm. He followed her closely into the house where the ball was to happen. A huff of frustration as he stepped over the threshold. There was no going back now.

Avery had walked a bit ahead of him, so instead of following her, he had chosen to stalk the shadows like he always did. Scope out the scene. The only thing able to coax him out would be Avery, Summer, or marshmallows. Though none seemed to be present enough to bring him out of his brooding, so he would stay put unless someone did come along.

He watched as guests began entering, but thankfully he was paid little mind. He didn’t want to be bothered nor seen. Not for the time being at least. He would move. Eventually. When the time called for it or if Avery decided to explore another room. Then he would dutifully stick by her side like a proper gentleman cousin would do.

They arrived via carriage. Of course, they could have apparated but where would be the fun in that? Besides, the carriage was classier and the van Elst’s annual pureblood ball was the perfect event to show off at. As usual, her mother’s signature speech preceded their arrival “No inappropriate behavior and no funny business. Especially you, young lady. You are one and you will act like one.” Her mother was someone you couldn’t argue against, especially in situations like these. And so she pasted on a polite smile, straightened her back and prepared to spend the evening in the face of stuck up, spoiled pricks.

In that manner she entered the parlor. It was already beginning to fill with other rich pureblooded families and their kids. She lost track of her parents and Sasha the minute they had greeted the van Elst’s. She drifted around the room offering a polite ‘good evening’ and ‘How nice to see you again’ to any adults. Her aim was simply to find somebody her age who wasn’t an asshole, someone she could stick around with for the evening.

She found a group of girls already standing together and went to join them. Her heels clicked against the polished floor as she went, creating a steady rhythm. She would be pleasant. Just for tonight. She greeted them, “Good evening,” that was the very least expected of her, “Kira.” she said “Kira Orlova, my father is quite influential.” She was well aware that many of them disliked half-breeds, but Veela weren’t like the others. All they did was provide her with her pale complexion and a knack for getting her way. Either way, she was certain it wouldn’t come up and if it did, we’ll, she would find herself some better company.
