After a hectic morning filled with classes and tons of homework, one would love to have something to do that was fun and different- a new experience; and that's what I craved. As if on cue, I spotted a poster in the Corridor, all colourful and cheerful it was indeed. Come make a float for the Pride Parade this weekend! Boathouse, 3 p.m. Saturday. Snacks and materials provided. Ooo, a parade! How exciting, and it isn't just a normal parade, it's a Boat Parade for Pride month. This sounds great, I should definitely participate.

I was so excited, I already started visualising ideas for the boat. I was eager about this first time experience of mine. I'd only seen parades before, I was never part of one. The only problem was that I didn't have a partener for this, making a float all on my own, that could be quite difficult and time taking; having a partener would ease things. That was when a girl called out to me, "Hi there! I can tell that you seem interested in this event. Should we team up and build a float?" Oh wow, someone's offering to work together, looks like I don't need to look for a partner after all. I replied as I nodded, "Heyy, I'd love to team up."

The both of us then headed to the boathouse. There were a bunch of students who'd arrived before us, and had already started working on their floats. The parade hadn't even started, but the place was so lively. And all that delicious food in all the colours of the rainbow, ohh I just had to cherish them. I think my partener couldn't wait either. I could just see the glint of awe in her eyes. I mean, who wouldn't after looking at all this.

Anyways, she suggested we build a float and paint it rainbow and decorate it; an idea to which I agreed. We started our work by choosing a canoe and gathering up the supplies around us. It was quite exquisite if you ask me. Besides the basic materials required to build a float- like wood, there was a wide selection of decorations. Flags in different shapes and designs, balloons, glitter, and what-not. It seemed magical.

We worked hard our float till the point where we were exhausted. The girl had decided to paint the canoe manually, not that I mind. I had experience doing things the muggle way, given that my dad was a muggle. I always had a lot of fun with him. Even though muggles may not seem so extravagant on comparison to wizards, they were pretty cool themselves. I helped the girl paint the float, then we proceeded to decorate it. We added heart-shaped rainbow flags, colorful balloons, and at last to top it all of, I decided to sprinkle some glitter over it. It was the perfect float. I loved it.

To reward ourselves for the hardworking we'd put in, we went to the snacks table to treat us. Finally! I can't wait to savour these scrumptious looking dishes. I can almost taste them. There was a wide range of snacks and pastries to choose from. I couldn't decide which one to taste first. Hmm... what should I have first, the raspberry empire biscuits, or the scones, perhaps some fruit. My eyes then landed on the chocolate dipped pretzels and strawberry rolls. These look perfect to start with. I took a bite and savoured the wonderful taste that lingered on my tastebuds. I said to the girl who'd picked up a lavender macaroon, "Mmm... this is delicious, you should try some too."

She said, "So… we have been working for so long and yet we still don’t know each other. I’m Winter, a Slytherin, what about you?” That was quite true, we hadn't gotten to know each other yet, I was infact, quite eager to know her. I replied, ""I'm Avery, a Gryffindor. I had a lot of fun today. If the preparations were this fun, I bet the actual parade would be wondrous. I can't wait. Is this your first time being a part of a parade?"

Fawkes looked up at the other members in the group. She smiled at them as they introduced themselves. The Gryffindor girl who had just arrived, Rosaline. Fawkes had seen her quite often around the place. She waved her hand before responding. I'm Fawkes Chaos. Ravenclaw student. It's nice to meet you!

At the mention of a plan Fawkes kinda just glanced at Henry. She wasn't sure what to do right now. Maybe they could put up the flags first? Decorating the boat after the flags were up would be the easiest thing to do. That's when the last of their group mates came up as well. She had seen him about the common room.

Mentions of painting the flags were made. She pondered it for a moment. It could work. But then they had to have a steady hand for this so that the colours didn't bleed. I'm honestly not sure about what to do. I'm cool with anything! She had this nervous smile on her face as she held up both hands with a thumbs up.

Glitter is always fun! Imagine how the water will look after the floats. So shimmery and pretty. Like the night sky. Her eyes were shinning now. Anything about the night sky or reminded her of it was a topic she could spend hours discussing about.

Though he might've only stopped at vaguely noting the habit with her fingers, the crushed roses were… entirely different. Hanako - admittedly paid as much hyper focused attention on Eun-ji at this moment more than any other moment in their life. Scanning with a sheer desperation for any sort of reaction, while he did his best not to create a whole story for why that happened. Easier said than done. The glimmer of excitement he felt before he could hide while he expressed his want to someone - dwindled. Just as fast as Eun-ji had time to crush the rose, was how fast he felt his own chest tighten. When directly looked back, the exposure of what he held so closely now bared in front of Eun-ji felt all too real. Just as real as the impending sense of rejection that crawled up in him like venom.

Venom. Uh oh.

Hanako faltered, taking his eyes of the ravenclaw and towards his hands, unclenching them forcefully.

Calm down. Breathe.

" I know that's bull"

Well. That came out less aggresive than it sounded in his head. Was breathing working? It had the touch of gentleness, like coming to a sad realisation.

" I… sorry. That came out… wrong. I meant.. well- theres no delicate way to put it. I think that's bull." He hoped the ache in him didn't translate too vulnerably through his voice, but his hand had already acted first. Firmly grasping the hand that was just now crushing the rose, trying to open it up - attempting to prevent her from crushing it again.

" C-c'mon .. Precious.. I .. felt like - well no I .. know .. that we're just similar enough. That's why we worked out so well before. Sure we never talked about it all that well before but don't you think I'd recognize running away when I see it?", he quizzed, deciding the gamble was worth. Leading to a more panicked tone than he anticipated which resulted in a nervous laugh afterwards. " Thats more or less what I'd say. Don't tell me after all this time you're saying that's all I'm worth to you in the end? A Distraction?". There was a harsh pained sharpness to his last word, intensified with the way he had leaned closer to her despite the rim of the boat and some flowers between them. Like it was no longer sufficient to look from afar.

“I know that's bull.” The words landed like a stone into still water, making all of Eun-ji’s thoughts scatter in the wind. What? No. That wasn’t how this was supposed to go. Sure, she had been a tad less cruel than she could have been but she was certain that much was still enough when it came to Hana. Avoidance was a language both of them spoke fluently and he was arguably the more eager one when it came to tactical retreats. The witch only turned into a coward when it truly mattered. Hana? He was a skittish creature and Eun-ji always believed they would have never made it this far had she not recognized that as quickly as she did. She had counted on that very knowledge. So why was he still here? Why was he pushing back instead of leaving? And why did he sound almost...gentle doing it?

The young witch found herself at loss for words while the rogue continued talking. She only snapped herself out of it when his hand eventually found hers. Only then did she finally notice the damage she had done to the poor rose and her own hand. Sloppy. Embarrassingly so. Since when did she lose control in ways anyone could see? Well…since Hana apparently. What now then? How was he going to believe any more lies thrown at him when she revealed her cards so carelessly? For a moment, Eun-ji's fingers clutched around the ruined flower even tighter…like a one last useless act of defiance. Then she opened her hand. There wasn’t much to save.

“If you know then you should done what I always did for you.” The witch countered quietly. “You should have looked away.” She pointed out, lowering her voice even further. “Not talking about it was precisely why we’ve been working so well.” He didn’t want to pretend anymore? Fine. If lies could no longer succeed, the truth might just do the trick. Because that’s how it was. Every time Eun-ji saw Hana searching for a way out, she gracefully offered an opening. No questions asked. Yet now, when she needed the same mercy the most, here he was…blocking her exit with a startling flash of stubbornness. And, as if that wasn’t enough, he had the audacity to look as if her words wounded him, when in fact, the opposite should have been true. A “distraction” in her situation, was something she considered most precious. Admittedly, there was no way Hana could understand that and she was not about to explain.

When, the boy leaned closer after finishing his speech, Eun-ji didn’t lean back. She stayed her ground, matching his stride. Stubbornness answered with stubbornness. Once again proving that they were indeed more similar than anyone might think. “It doesn’t matter what you are to me.” She hissed his way, for the first time truly struggling to stay composed and keep her emotions on a leash. Because he didn’t know the extent of her feelings for him, and suddenly she found it most unfair. Why did he get to be the victim in this scenario, when it was her heart that was currently bleeding?

“You cannot afford me.” The counter argument came out surprisingly easy. The Hunts had been treating her like a commodity for so long she had finally stopped hearing the insult in it. The Ravenclaw couldn’t really explain what she meant by it but she figured it would get the message across either way. Whether the boy took it as a dig at him or a warning that it actually was, didn’t matter. Or perhaps…the insult would be better. Those tended to be far more effective. And I cannot afford you either. The confession pressed against her lips like a secret desperate to ruin everything. Eun-ji swallowed it before it could.

Hands freed from the food plate. Rosaline kept smiling as she listened to Henry's and Fawkes’ introduction of themselves. She now recalled that she might have seen them around the campus and classes, but they hadn’t met each other properly before. “It’s a pleasure to meet you guys. I can tell today will be fun.” Rosaline grinned.

Henry took a shortbread and thanked her for that. He seemed to enjoy it. Rosaline mused for a second whether she should have one too. Then her stomach grumbled. It was a sign to eat some food. She leaned forward and picked one, biting it carefully. It was always a treat to have a biscuit in the morning, or afternoon, or evening. Every time could be biscuit time. Although it tasted a bit dryer than usual because she didn’t bring water or tea with her. After finishing the blueberry biscuit, she drew her handkerchief out and dabbed it on her lips in case there were any crumbs left.

Then she examined the ship they had built right now. The next step should be picking colors for the boat, she supposed. As she contemplated, she noticed a familiar black-haired boy appear at the corner of her eyes. Leo. The boy seemed well-prepared, bringing an armful of supplies. “Hey, Leo.” She replied to his greeting with a wide grin.

What was their plan? She didn’t have any concrete idea now. Henry’s suggestion sounded appealing. Rosaline nodded. “Yeah, that looks good to me. It will be so pretty after we paint it and sprinkle those glitters.” Rosaline chuckled at Fawkes’ remark about glitters floating on the river after the pride.

Then she grabbed a fresh and clean brush scattered on the ground, glancing over her groupmates. She asked, “Where should we paint first?” Although she knew very well that they could simply cast a color-changing spell to achieve the same effect, they seemed to have fun doing this in a Muggle way. She would like to play along. Plus, she was having fun too.

" Hahah.. Sorry. I'm not that kind anymore. Not enough to look away anymore". Even as the words whispered out of his lips, there was a raw apology in his voice. He was well aware this would hurt. Eun-ji and him worked so well together because they were the type to look away. They were meticulous with what they shown and expressed. Measured and calculated. How they show up just enough for one another. Sure, they challenged that line before but he was well aware what he was doing now was against everything they agreed together. Burning a bridge they build together, in an attempt to show how flimsy it was. Worst case scenario she would only see it as this: a bridge being burnt.

And just like Hanako, she responds with a torch of her own. Better to burn a bridge coldly than looked like it ever effected you, huh - Eun-ji? Even if he thought so - it hurt. It hurt so much his grip on her hand faltered and he leaned away as if her words burned him.

Even so, he stayed.

" Liar "

His counter argument was just as easy as hers. Determined, through gritted teeth.

" Of course it matters. It matters so much and thats why we're in this shitty arrangement in the first place. And why its so important that we maintain just enough distance isn't it? 'Cannot afford me'? Try me. Very convenient isn't it? Pulling a word like that after you're the same person that told me love isn't a luxury you can't afford. Something that cost you, and its you that cannot afford to pay the price that was set for? I remember" He hissed, the words they exchanged at the Gala of Mysteries suddenly becoming all too real once more when brought up to the surface again. " I'm not asking for us to get married or something, Eun-ji. I'm saying all this cause I know that you are important enough to me that I don't want to pretend I don't want to willingly make plans with you. Hanging out? Trips to cafes? We're wizards for god's sake, traveling here and there whenever shouldn't be a problem. I still want to be part of your life even after graduation! You can give me whatever excuse to convince me otherwise, I'd just be very careful with what you say to me of all people. Who knows exactly how effective this method is. So tell me, Eun-ji. Why shouldn't we start being friends? "

Ah. There it was. She was still choosing her words carefully but even then, Hana was clearly caught off guard by them. No. Not caught off guard. He was hurt. That much was evident from his body language alone and yet…he didn’t leave. That was the most peculiar thing. Usually, it would take much less than this for Hana to became all prickly and storm off but this time, he chose to stay. For some reason, today of all days, the Slytherin suddenly decided to latch on and say exactly what was on his mind. Eun-ji had to admit, it was remarkably difficult adjusting to this new side of him. Perhaps that's why it wasn’t all that hard for him to make her lose composure here and there.

“You do?” The question escaped her lips before she could stop it. Eun-ji gritted her teeth in frustration. Truthfully, she didn’t think he’d remember. In fact, she counted on it. Her words back then carried a deep meaning but as someone who didn’t know the story behind it, Hana had no reason to hold onto them for so long. It would seem she underestimated him. “Doesn’t matter…” The witch tried to salvage the situation to the best of her ability. “Those statements are not mutually exclusive.” That much was true although it did not change his point nor did it bring her closer to winning the argument and she was beginning to run out of weapons. Being moderately curt with him clearly hadn’t worked but Eun-ji couldn’t even imagine lashing out full force. Hana was never meant to be on a receiving end of her venom. Which only left honesty. Well…something resembling it at very least.

The Ravenclaw chuckled but it was a sound entirely devoid of humor. “Fine, you want the truth?” She almost laughed again at his comment about marriage. Of course, she knew he wasn’t asking to marry her. The idea was so absurd it didn’t even deserve a reaction. Eun-ji could hardly imagine him liking her much less wanting to bind himself to her for life. Besides, she already came to understand what her destiny would be in that regard. If she ever got married, it would be to some pristine pureblood boy who’d never made her heart flutter the way Hana could. Life partner chosen because his family was respectable and his blood was clean. A stranger in her own home but the safest solution nonetheless.

“I liked you here. In my little bubble, where I could ignore everything else. It was fun and easy.” Not always easy of course. Not since she realized her feelings for him. Once that happened, Hana gained the ability to hurt her deeply and in a ways he’d never understand. Careless words from anyone else could be easily brushed off. When they came from him? They felt like a sharp teeth sinking deep into her heart. “But my world outside is nothing like that bubble and I don’t want you in it. You don't belong there.” There. She said it. It tasted bitter on her tongue, even more so because she wasn’t lying. Not entirely anyway. The dreamer buried somewhere inside of her still yearned to keep the boy close, wanted to pretend that wanting something badly enough would keep it safe. But that part of her no longer held any real power over her choices because she was naive and couldn’t protect anyone.

Eun-ji gave her opponent a moment of silence for her words to properly settle into his chaotic mind. Was he hurt to the point of finally giving up on her? The answer was most likely yes. She should have been relived by the thought…instead, something inside her twisted painfully. Eun-ji had guessed he wouldn’t be so hurt if she explained what her world actually looked like but she had no desire to do that. She could never tell him, let alone show him. Why did she have to suffer such humiliation when she already knew how their story would end?

A few more seconds of silence then quieter, like it was costing her everything she had to say the next thing aloud. Which it absolutely did. “You are a coward, Hana.” Her voice cracked a little at the insult but she didn’t look away. The young rogue appeared awfully brave right now but it was easy to be brave when you were oblivious to the danger. “You don’t sound like one right now but you are. Look at you. Couple harsh words and you already recoil as if I threw incendio your way.” Her gaze flickered toward the space he had put between. If he couldn’t handle even that much, how was he going to survive a single conversation with her grandparents? The questions that were not really questions. The scrutiny. The two of them observed weaknesses the way other people observed weather. “That attitude didn’t matter here but it does outside. You don’t like complicated but everything around me is.” That was as much as she was willing to give. “I can’t fit cowards into my life and I can’t separate you from it either.”

That was the heart of it. Even if she went out of her way to make sure their paths didn’t cross, her grandfather would eventually find out. He always did with things that mattered to her. That man was always watching and analyzing from the shadows like a hungry vulture. Sure, Eun-ji could give it a try and see how things turned out but could her heart still handle it? After losing so many people, did she want to invite another one into her life just to watch him run for the hills once he found out what being part of the Hunt family truly meant for her? Even her parents couldn’t handle the pressure so why should she believe Hana could? Hearing him say that he cared enough to not want to lose touch after graduation, made her heart tingle but it wasn’t enough. Not this time.
