Once the students settled in their bases, Naiane leaned against the balcony of the observation tower. Her gaze swept over the perimeter before settling on the first zone.

Home base was often the safest place one could be. Unfortunately for the Spider Monkeys, that was certainly not the case. Unbeknownst to them, a small jaguar had silently crept into their side of the jungle. While stalking the four students, its ears perked up as it listened and waited for the perfect moment to strike. An unsuspecting Dahlia soon had her back turned to the hidden predator, providing it with an opportunity to leap out from the shrub and claw at her arm. Whether it was of her own volition or at the urging of her allies; she quickly fled the scene. Its attention then turned to Ophelia before it lunged forwards. Though she was swift enough to move away, the jaguar was quicker and scraped her ankle before she could run away. It paid no mind to those who escaped and suddenly pounced on Sir Humphrey D’Ogwarts III (NPC)
, leaving a nasty cut on their leg before they ran off in the same direction as the others.

And then there were two.

The Jaguar slowed its steps before staring Dido and Jada down as though it were taunting them. After several back and forths, it quietly retreated back into the shrubs with glint in its eyes that seemingly threatened its return. It was difficult to tell from the current angle, but perhaps one of them was bold enough to meet its gaze. Or perhaps they were too terrified to perform any sudden movements. Either way they were left unscathed, this time. Despite the close call, the two survivors remained exactly where they were. Better the devil they knew than the devil they didn’t, right? Jada scanned her surroundings, eyeing the large trees with roots creeping out of the ground and the vine-like plants that laid out a path. Catching her off guard again would not be an easy task. Dido, on the other hand, chose a practical approach and quickly began laying a trap. Although it took her some time, it was well-built and earned a firm nod of approval from Naiane who noted her exceptional skills.

Naiane then turned her attention to those who slipped away long before the jaguar arrived. Whilst they began wading through the river, any semblance of peace they had was quickly broken by the trio frantically running towards them and splashing about in the water as they drew near. Some graced them with their attention, while others seemingly paid them no mind. Either way, no one noticed the massive serpent resting on the riverbank they neared until it was too late. The flicker of its tail drew their attention first. With a decisive strike, it immobilised Tina. After she fell to the ground, it then pulled Salim into a constraint but released him once a particular parselmouth caught its attention. Sure enough, it stared at Tes; assessing whether she was a threat. The verdict seemed clear as it hissed a warning only she understood: “Sssstay away…” Whatever Tes’ response was, the serpent evidently did not approve. With no warning, it wrapped her in a sudden embrace she likely did not care for before releasing her near Salim. Although their bones would survive the ordeal, it would certainly take them a moment to recover. For now, all they could do was lay on the river bank.

Dahlia, Ophelia and Sir Humphrey D’Ogwarts III (NPC) were already on high alert after their previous scare and swiftly reacted to chaos. Naiane could not fully discern what they were doing without binoculars, but it almost seemed like someone was bold enough to try scaring the serpent off while another had fallen back immediately. Whatever it was they did, it certainly saved their skin, for the agitated anaconda soon slithered away into the depths of the jungle while hissing like a grumpy old man mumbling about shooing some darn kids off their lawn. Not all hope was lost for these three.

Meanwhile, the Sloths were fortunate enough to have none of the deadly wildlife pursuing – this time. Branches from crooked trees obstructed their path whilst they navigated the thick forest. The vibrant flora blooming from dense foliages seemed incredibly beautiful, until they slowly began closing up as though they were overcome with sense of foreboding. Shortly after, the sky opened up and unleashed a torrential rain that quickly began flooding the forest and drenching unsuspecting Sloths. The weather proved to be as unpredictable as the creatures lurking within the forest. Hearing each other over the heavy downpour was difficult, but not impossible. Fawkes quickly discovered how treacherous the terrain was when she slipped and wound up stuck between some intersecting branches. Henry followed suit and became entangled in some of the dense flora. A pitiful sight, but there was no sorrow to spare; both needed some time to wriggle their way out of that. Olivia and Avery, however, were fortunate enough to maintain their balance. They were likely nimble enough to withstand the barrage of water or clever enough to hold onto a sturdy branch.

The Sloths who remained at their base soon realised that something was amiss. A thick, disorientating mist slowly obscured their vision until the most they could make out was the silhouette of their hand if raised in front of them. As the mist permeated their base, it looked like a cloud was engulfing them. As the visibility dropped, Lauren remained aware of the trench’s steep descent and felt the uneven roots she planted her shoes on. Something in that likely grounded her; allowing her to grab ahold of herself. Danielle also caught herself, but the others were not so fortunate. Denise and Denisse shared more than just a similar name; they shared a similar fate. Staring into the ghostly pale abyss left them feeling incredibly dizzy. It would not take much for either of them to stumble. However, that alone was not enough to interfere with their resolve.

Lauren refused to let the low visibility leave her vulnerable and began using her other senses to decipher her surroundings. She could easily trace her fingers over the vines, how each had a distinct pattern that told her where she was relative to the last cluster. She could also notice how the air grew colder when she was closer to the center of the trench, but warmer if she wandered up the steep slope. Meanwhile, Denisse tried lightening the mood with a silly remark and earned a hearty response from Denise, who was bold enough to try handling a trap despite the conditions. Despite the risks, her handiwork was beautiful and the risk paid off.

As was foretold, the jungle was incredibly ruthless. Neither the Spider Monkeys nor Sloths were spared from its wrath. Some overcame hardships whilst others were holding on for dear life whilst trying to weather the storm. This, however, was only the beginning. Naiane quietly wondered what trials the jungle would bestow upon them next.

HOW TO PLAY

The game ends when either team successfully retrieved the other teams flag to their base. Team Spider Monkey will be starting the game in Zone 1 and Team Sloth will be in Zone 4 at the opposite end of the arena. There will be at most 10 rounds, each requiring a post of 200+ words. Please make sure you include your character's stats in your post.

During the first round only, each team must state which zone their flag is hidden in to the thread moderator. You may chose to hide the flag in any of the 4 zones. The flag remains in that zone unless successfully discovered or moved through gameplay mechanics. Do not reveal in game where the flag is located.

Each round, everyone in the team must make at least one action from the Capture the Flag actions list, unless they are unable to act due to a status effect or restriction. These actions are zone dependent. The team scores points by making successful flag actions or interceptive actions towards a flag carrier. Please note that players may only move between adjacent zones and cannot skip zones while travelling.

At the conclusion of each round, the zone state map will be updated to reflect all player locations. Players may only target characters who are in the same zone as them at the end of the previous round. If a target moves out of the zone during the following movement phase, the action automatically fails, with the exception of Flag Intercept and non-magical support actions that include a chase mechanic. When performing these actions, the player automatically follows the target into the destination zone as part of the interaction.

If the action fails while chasing, the pursuing player is left behind in the original zone while the target successfully gains distance.

It was finally the day of the event. The reason they had come all this way in the first place. And now, they were going to win it. Well at least I hoped so. My team was made up of a good mix of people; older and younger students from all schools, though most were from Hogwarts. The whistle blew and the game began. They were deep inside of the forest, surrounded by the wilderness. The other team was nowhere in sight, instead they set out in pairs and threes. Some went searching, others stayed to guard their own flag. It was just my luck to have been placed with Dido. Ugh, the girl would probably start crying for her parents as soon at she got a little cut. ”And so we meet again.” I told her, flashing a tight smile. I rolled her eyes at the girl, an outlet for my frustration, and was about to turn to scan the dense foliage for any stray people looking for our flag. A small cry turned my attention. A jaguar. It was kind of beautiful and I wished I could keep it if only it wasn’t trying to kill us. It lunged towards Ophelia, a girl she knew from that quidditch game they’d played. Nobody was seriously injured other than Lex. And then it turned to them. She and Dido stood unmoving as the animal watched them. I admired it, a small smile curling on my lips, it’s fur gleamed silkily in the afternoon sun, it’s pointed canines sharp and ready to tear meat off bone. Perhaps one day when she grew older she would get one for herself… The jaguar moved on, it was as if it hadn’t been interested in us, as if we were too boring. Oh well, at least they could get back on task… I guess?

Denise stood nervously; she wasn't used to such thick jungles and considered herself a mountain girl, a girl who could hike a million mountains. It was foggy, and she stood nervously, and the worst part was that she was not able to see a single person.

A mist, more like a thick, engulfing fog, swamped everyone as they left to find the flag elsewhere. She didn't really know what would happen, but decided to do her best. She looked at a girl with blonde hair, and another girl, on closer inspection, was Lauren Vanes, and the other Denisse De Vera. Well, despite different spellings, Denise and Denisse sounded identical phonetically, and both were in the same house, so she was used to being mixed up at times.

She hovered closer to De Vera; well, it was terrifying being alone. De Vera, perhaps trying to lighten the mood, remarked, “If a giant spider jumps out, I’ll just throw Henry at it. He looks bite-sized enough to buy us a head start.”

Denise had to laugh, as her remark was entirely true. Holbrook seemed like the type to easily run and hide, with a fast and evasive maneuver. "I agree, and perhaps we should throw a sneezing spell as well so it's confused."

The irony of the statement is that De Vera cast a sneezing spell on Winter Angelo during a prank war in the library, causing chaos to unfold. Perhaps due to a bit of solidarity due to being with De Vera, she felt a bit more confident, sort of, as she set her trap. With much care and deliberation, she finished, feeling rather proud as well.

As soon as they were given the signal to start, Fawkes moved forward into the next zone along with Henry, Olivia and Avery. The forest was beautiful. Dark and a bit scary, but beautiful! She walked along what seemed to be some semblance of a pathway across to the next area. She looked around hoping to not bump into any wild animals while they were here.

All of the sudden it started raining. And it wasn't the light drizzles they were used to. No. It was a full on downpour. Her clothes were soaked instantly. Bleh. The water was falling onto her glasses and hindering her vision badly. She took them off and tried to clean them but almost instantly they were covered in water drops once again. She sighed and pocketed them instead. Was better to have blurrier vision and still be able to see something rather than to have a bunch of water droplets covering her eyes.

Well as the rain got worse she couldn't see what was in front of her and ended up slipping in some mud and fell into some tangled up branches. As she tried to get out, she could feel them making cuts in her arm. She couldn't force her way out. She would have to take it slowly if she wanted to come out of this unharmed.

Dido didn’t move when the game began.

Or, at the very least, she didn’t move instantly. Instead, her gaze fixed itself just a few metres to the left of Tina, determined to keep track of where the girl was and where Dido, respectively, would not be. Compared to the flashing turmoil in her own head, the Ravenclaw seemed to have a plan as Dido noticed her racing off into the second zone, followed swiftly by the footsteps of what Dido could only assume were most of the other members of her team. Counting the number of feet which passed her and looking up to see the students remaining, Dido realised that, somehow, her team only had seven players! Or, rather, she believed that right up until she saw a quite short boy, who looked to be roughly Dido’s own age, standing near the second zone, seemingly uninterested in the game’s beginning.

So, gritting her teeth, Dido instead crouched down on the ground and searched for something to do. Preferably something that was vaguely useful. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of a small bundle of thin vines and, inspired by the many, many Indiana Jones movies her mum had made her watch, she quickly set about setting up a simple tripwire trap. Her hands moved deftly, the shaking having stopped in wake of her concentration, and, within a few seconds, Dido was completely absorbed in the work rather than any of the people around her. Which was odd.

Perhaps this break in Dido’s character would backfire when, to her later horror, she didn’t even notice the jaguar which had entered the area until it lunged and attacked Dahlia, the seeker from Dido’s quidditch game. In shock, Dido immediately yelped and looked straight towards the nearest observation tower, expecting assistance. However, when it eventually became clear that no help was going to come from the girl Dido could just about make out, she turned slowly towards the fearsome feline. It was seemingly contented with scaring three of Dido’s teammates as, instead of chasing them, it had similarly turned towards the two girls.

In pure terror, Dido would instinctively reach out to clutch the material of Jada’s shirt/outfit, hands still too driven by adrenaline to shake. No matter how Jada reacted, Dido pulled her hand back, balling it into a fist by her side as she reddened in embarrassment.

To her immense relief, with one last fear-inducing blink, the jaguar left and Dido fell to her knees, too shaken to make more traps or even think about anything concrete for a few moments.
