Corrine loved Hogwarts. She truly did. Between the wonders of the Wizarding World, the fact that magic existed, the classes that kept her rapt attention at all times and the people she’s met by far, the girl found that there was little to no reason to love Hogwarts. No doubt that within the few years that she’ll be here, this place will become nothing short of a second home. It might already be on its way, even.

However, much like back home, any day in Hogwarts could easily become a hiccup in her journey. Like today, for example. Thursday morning started out fine, with Corrine having gotten a decent amount of sleep the night before. It wasn’t until halfway through her first class that she remembered exactly how she fell asleep.. right on top of her homework pile, which unsurprisingly still incomplete.

By the time she reached Transfiguration, her third class of the day, her eyes were red and teary. Overstimulation, stress and everything in between washed over her in tsunami-like waves, ruining what she thought was going to be a good day. What’s worse was that her seatmates could obviously see her shaking shoulders while she held her cries in as best as she could; her only saving grace from being noticed by her professor was the fact that she had sat somewhere in the back. A few of them would glance back at her in mild concern, some looked confused, and others had rolled their eyes. To Corrine, it didn’t really matter in what way they looked at her. It only mattered that they were looking.

It seemed that even now, a whole month after arriving at Hogwarts, she still hadn’t changed for the better.

How weak, Corrine thought bitterly as she rushed out of the Transfiguration classroom. In her rush to simply escape the attention, she inadvertently turned the corner and straight into one of the busiest corridors she’d seen—typically one that she knew to avoid—immediately crashing into somebody else. Ignoring the way the other student had glared and grumbled, she immediately got up with a meek apology before rushing away without a glance.

There was a strange stinging sensation on her knees, and her stomach was complaining loudly due to hunger. I can’t go to the Great Hall like this, she thought desperately, turning into another sharp corner. She let her feet and desperation lead the way, and before she knew it, she found herself in the owlery.

Home, she choked out a sob. I want home. I want Dad. I want Pops. I want my Nana. Her hands trembled as she reached for whatever parchment she had in her bag. Leaning on the wall of the owlery and ignoring the way some of the owls stared, she began to pour her soul out into her writing. The blurriness actually prevented her from seeing whatever scribbles she wrote, and there’s no doubt it likely looked like chicken scratch, but she continued without a care.

“Caramel!” The girl cried out hysterically, the letter she had messily finished crumpled in her hand. “Please, get this to Nana. Dad, or even Pops. To anybody.” Her owl flew down from the loudest screech Corrine had heard from him yet, landing on the nearest post close to her. His grumpy demeanor was nowhere to be seen as he squawked insistently, nipping at her hands when she reached out. It didn’t take a genius to realize that the owl was refusing to do as she asked because of his worry.

But right now? Corrine really needed her family.. and they were far, far from here.

“Caramel, please.” She shook her head, trying to hand the crumpled paper to him. “Please. Just take it. Please!”

The lulling coos of resting owls. The light scratch and swirl of the tip of an ink-dipped quill against fresh parchment. The sweet hum of maltose candy on his tongue. The light brushing of mid-day winds over his hair and cheeks. Sensations that, in this quiet place, now represent “peace”. Not emptiness, not mundanity, but peace. That, in itself, was strange. It was strange that letter writing could feel so calming, because it hadn't been so long ago. Writing letters used to be an exhausting ordeal. Back when they were unspoken laments and frustrations scrawled and poured into sheets of crumpled parchment, when ink often stained his skin and the quill would inscribe its unsung requiem for hours on end. Perhaps it was the long-yearned taste of freedom, or the notion that someone far from here still thought of him, but letter writing was now so, so much more different. The pleasant buzz of quiet enveloped him like a blanket, far gentler compared to the stale, static silence that drowned him at the estate. It was… nice.

Erast hummed in contentment, gently petting a tawny owl that had come to nudge at the envelopes in his hand. One was addressed to the oldest of his younger sisters, Peixian, who had been complaining of his absence and her missing his stories by the fireplace. He huffed fondly, coaxing the tawny owl into accepting his letters for the owl treat in his palm. If only that were true. His sisters would yearn or want for nothing if the clan had anything to say about it. He himself would implore his governess to ensure it, if it came down to it. The other letter was for his governess, who had, in sending countless chiding letters about the importance of maintaining her studies, seemed to fret more than she let on over his first months alone. It must be strange, being such a reputable governess and sending a ward into a world that had no place for him. That thought churned uncomfortably in his chest.

The curious owl pecked at his envelopes, but this time, Erast nudged it away gently with another treat. He would rewrite these letters another time. Just as he tidied up and got ready to head back into the Great Hall for a quick meal, a girl dashed into the Owlery in a frenzy. He startled, stepping aside in alarm. It didn't seem like she noticed him at all as the sound of frantic scribbling on parchment filled the air, and the brunet felt obliged to look away from the scene to give her privacy. For a moment, Erast pondered slipping out before he was discovered and scolded for intruding on this private moment. After all, meddling was the master killer of fools, and his governess raised no fool.

A silent step inched towards the doorway. Then came the frantic tears. Tearful, unfiltered pleas for her owl to reach her family filled the Owlery. Erast froze. The brunette’s owl screeched and squawked at its owner, concerned beneath its stubborn insistence. The letters in his robes burned with a vengeance, and his chest tightened. The sobs rung in his ears, dragging up wisps of a past that he had been burying. Memories of a childhood that yearned for the moments where expectant, tear-filled eyes of sisters will be directed his way, for those short moments where life had a purpose. If Erast had left then, he might have succeeded with a merely dented conscience. Instead, he made the fatal mistake of looking at the girl.

Hazel eyes shimmered with tears that trailed down flushed cheeks, and clenched in shaking hands the letter that was written in that earlier frenzy. For a second, it was no longer a stranger he saw, but a far more familiar girl that he had left behind.

“Hey, hey, it's okay,” The reassurance slipped off his tongue, voice smooth as velvet. Before his rational mind could pull him back, a hand went to pat gently at her hands where they crumpled her letter.

“I’m sure he'll help you deliver your letter in just a minute. He just needs a little push.” Erast retrieved a few pieces of owl treats from his pocket, and gingerly offered it in front of the grumpy owl with a coaxing hum – Caramel, he remembered her calling it. He opened his palm just in case the girl wanted to take one too.

“Owls seem to be quite sensitive. Caramel probably wants to make sure you're okay,” He glanced at the girl’s expression, his lips instinctively curled in a gentle, encouraging smile. Slowly, he reached to help straighten the crumpled envelope in her hands, making sure his movements are light enough that she can see his hand or choose to pull away. As he did it, awareness crashed over him. What was he doing? His shoulders tensed, his fingers faltered.

“I'm sure that letter will reach your family safely. Your owl seems to like you, so it'll do a good job,” Erast's hands tucked themselves back, the awkwardness making him fidget with the letters tucked in his pockets. In his nervousness, his accent coated his words heavily, and English felt cloying on his tongue.

“Sorry, I can… get going, if you're both okay,” Erast’s eyes subconsciously turned away, embarrassed at his intrusion on the other's privacy and moment of distress hitting him.

Before she could wail any further, a voice startled her out of it partly. In her distraught state, she couldn’t even properly process the stranger’s words. All that stuck out to her was the slow, patient tone that the stranger held, calming her slightly. Reassurance dripped from the student’s words like honey, sweet and genuine, followed by a gentle touch delivered to her hand.

Unconsciously, Corrine sniffled and took a deep, shaky breath. The hand that had been patted, the very one holding the crumpled letter, loosened its hold. A few deep cycles later, she’s considerably calmer, at least enough to finally look at the student in front of her properly. To her surprise, it was actually a boy who was taller than she was by quite a bit. At first glance, his brown eyes seemed cold and uncaring, but clearly his actions contradicted that, considering he had stepped forward in concern to check in on her tearful self. It’s not like anybody around her had that obligation to step forward and provide comfort; most others would’ve just minded their own business, and Corrine wouldn’t have shamed them for it.

But this boy did.

In a way, he reminded her of Paul, though they were vastly different. Paul radiated sunlight at every turn, faintly reminiscent of the summer season. This one seemed more like winter in her eyes, from what little she could see. Not exactly the unwelcoming cold, but more so the pleasant chill that lets you appreciate an open fire some more. The very kind that let you bundle up and allowed you to stay inside your home.

Quietly, the boy in front of her offered Caramel a few treats. For a moment, he also led an open palm of treats towards her, seemingly in offering, but she’s too dazed to respond. He doesn’t seem to take offense, only moving on to continue murmuring. Something about Caramel likely just being concerned, hence him refusing to fly off as per her request. Sparing a glance to him, the owl in question was still quite visibly distressed, with his feathers still ruffled. He quietly landed on her shoulder, nuzzling his beak into her cheek in comfort.

Her heart melted at the action. Caramel’s so sweet, she thought as she relaxed a bit further, reaching a shaky hand out to hover over the owl’s head. As she did, she let the boy gently pull the crumpled letter out of her hand, since he had reached out to uncrumple it. His smile provided her great comfort, and it isn’t long before her sniffles dwindle into the faintest volume.

The boy eventually awkwardly stepped back, seemingly embarrassed by his actions. Corrine knew that he meant well, so she shook her head. “..It’s okay.” The girl mumbled, rubbing her eyes to remove what little of the tears remained. “I’m okay. Thank you for helping me.”

His presence brought her calmness. Was it selfish for her to want the boy to stick around? Maybe make a potential friend?

Strange. That was the word to describe the situation that Erast had landed himself in on what was supposed to be a peaceful escape from the world beyond this spiralling tower. With a hand-straightened envelope in hand, and the affectionate exchange between owl and owner happening before him, the brunet felt sorely out of place, as if he had intruded on a private moment once again. Though, the feeling would not be unfamiliar to him. He often found himself in such a position, where he stood as an outlier and served as little but an awkward intruder till he was needed once more. Experience had earned him patience, accumulated over the years and strengthened enough to keep him rooted where he stood. The sweet interaction made the letters hidden away in his sleeves burn. He fidgeted slightly to shift the small weight deeper into his robes.

“That’s good to hear. It has been quite difficult for everyone, since it’s only our first month at school,” Erast waved his hand in calming dismissal of the thanks. Reassurance rolled off his tongue like warmed butter, a second nature to him. “We first-years have to help each other.”

Handing back the letter, he smiled once more, “Shall we try again? Dinner will last long enough for us to return before it’s over. I have more paper and ink if you’d like to write another one too.” He turned around to look at his previous, claimed spot, only to sigh when he saw a pair of barn owls in it preening and gnawing on what he could only identify to be a rodent jerky. Oh dear. Nervously chuckling, “I’ll… clean a spot first if you plan to, of course. Haha…”

Upon meeting the girl’s eyes again, Erast startled slightly. “Ah, oh no… I forgot to introduce myself again,” He fumbled slightly to extend a hand to the girl, “I am Erast Y-... Yes, Erast. Nice to meet you.” His tongue resisted the sound of his family name, and he swallowed it down with a mask of sunny friendliness. Unfamiliar with the motion, his hand wavered strangely in the air for a bit.

Corrine found herself wincing at his words, considering it to be the greatest understatement she’s heard yet this year. Things started out well when she arrived at Hogwarts; she made friends for the first time in her life, even growing to like the professors and the paintings that talked to her in the halls. However, it wasn’t long before the unfamiliarity reared its head and posed a massive issue.

Meeting new people meant new friends, but it also meant having to deal with navigating around people you don’t know whatsoever. Being stuck in a magical new world with strange mechanics meant having to learn everything bit by bit through experience, and that wasn’t even considering the fact that Hogwarts was practically alive! Everything was new, new, new.

No sign of home was here.

A wave of homesickness washed over her once again, and she took a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself down. At the very least, she’s thankful that most of the people she's met have been nothing short of sweet, much like this other first-year in front of her.

Speaking of him, the boy had reached out to hand her back the crumpled paper, which she took back with pursed lips. It’s not long before she realized that, actually, she didn’t want to send this letter to her family, much less to her father. It was far too distressed, and it would no doubt worry him enough to make him buy the nearest flight ticket and train ticket just to take her home. As much as Corrine did miss home, it’s not like she wanted to give up Hogwarts either. Certainly not.

“Thank you,” Corrine murmured meekly, trying to smooth out the folds that had been left behind. Even if she wasn’t going to send this specific letter, she still wanted to save it since it had her raw, unfiltered feelings. It might help in writing a second letter, preferably one that didn’t scream “Please take me home! I’m in absolute distress!” to her worrywart father.

“I’ll write a new one.” she nodded with a sniffle, looking up at him fully this time. Seemingly, that startled the boy into doing an introduction, as he had reached a hand out after giving his name.

Corrine wiped her sweaty hands on her robes, feeling awkward. Then, once ensuring that they were fully dry, she gingerly reached one of them out to shake his outstretched one. “My name is Corrine,” she said, unable to fully keep her gaze on him as an embarrassed flush crept up her neck.

A part of her wished that Erast would completely forget the image of him crying her eyes out in distress, but she doubted that was possible since it was just their first meeting.

How mortifying, she groaned internally.

Strange emotions seeped into Erast's awareness at the brunette's contemplative gaze at the crumpled envelope. A small part of him wondered if he himself had ever looked like that in his own quiet moments, tearful whilst clutching a letter inked with misery. He, too, kept a collection of heartfelt letters, all creased with their papers stiffened beyond recognition by liquid salt and unfortunate ink splatters. He understood.

“Lovely idea,” was the boy's supportive reply to the girl's decision to rewrite the letter, his smile steady as before. Erast went to sweep away the dusty stray feathers and unknown, brittle chunks where he had been to give the girl some room to do so. He had been ready to retract his hand, but was surprised when he turned to witness the brunette's awkward action of dry-patting her hands to shake his own. The boy would be a liar if he said that this strange girl wasn't oddly endearing despite how their interaction had begun.

“Always nice to meet fellow students,” Erast nodded, his gaze the image of mellow friendliness. He gave her hand exactly two steady, polite shakes before retracting, a smile never leaving his lips.

Glancing at the dimming skies beyond the tower, Erast would turn to Corrine with a nod towards the staircase once she had posted her newest letter back to her family.

“I suppose we're both long due for dinner. Walk with me, Corrine?”
