Percival wondered why he kept coming back to the lake. In all honesty, it wasn't hard to tell why. The Great Lake had become an area for him to relax.

Not many students came down to the lake, and if it did get crowded there was always enough room to move. The lake allowed for Percival to get the alone time he could not get with his nosy dormmates.

The thought of his dormmate's nosiness relit the fire deep inside of him. It wasn't long ago that his dormmates had gone as far as to spy on him in the bathroom. The thought of how he had spilled his guts to a mirror, only to be laughed at in the end only made the feeling worse.

Percival shook his head slightly in hopes of shaking off the growing anger and hurt that accompanied that memory. He thought back to the present as he walked along the dirt path of the trail. Around his right shoulder was his guitar.

The guitar had been Uncle Terrence's guitar, which had been given to him on his tenth birthday. After he had opened the carefully wrapped guitar, he had refused to put it down for hours afterward. The boy wanted to be able to play for his Uncle in the future. Impress him by how far he had come in his musical talent.

Though with every well-furnished talent, it only came with practice. Which is exactly what Percival was heading to do. The Great Lake provided enough space where he could practice freely. Even if he could only practice for thirty minutes before the evening dinner.

Percival sat down, careful not to sit on his guitar, below one of the many trees that sat near the shoreline. The lake was honestly beautiful in the daytime, though Percival decided he enjoyed it better at night.

With a small sigh, he reached for his guitar and began to lightly strum the guitar. After a couple of minutes passed, Percival moved on from practicing his chords.

Percival played an easy melody that he repeated over and over. He didn't know how he could move on from the chords he had created, and it resulted in him being caught at a standstill.

Like a broken record that couldn't get off a certain riff.

After a couple of rounds, Percival began to slightly hum. The boy got lost in his own world and didn't hear the other student approaching.

The hum turned to a close resemblance to gibberish as the boy sang along to the melody.

"Bah duh bah, Bah duh dah, Bah duh dah, Bah duh dah, Bah duh dah"

Percival eventually slowed down the beat of the melody and frowned to himself. It was difficult for someone to just sing the same melody over and over again.

He wanted to continue his little made-up song, but he had no clue how he should go about it.

It was a nice afternoon, the clouds hung low and covered the sky like a fluffy grey blanket and a pleasant breeze wafted through the air. It was neither cold nor warm and a rather common weather for the country. Alan was glad that it was not raining because it meant he could spend his afternoon outside so after he packed a small lunch box that consisted mainly of scones with jam that he had requested from the house elves for an afternoon snack, he made his way outside and over to where he would find the great lake.

The third year loved to spend his time there and was surprised when a melody, unfamiliar to him reached his senses and as he got closer he could make out a figure sitting by the lake with a guitar propped onto their lap. Involuntary his steps sped up in pace slightly as he made his way over to the kid he did not know, but perhaps soon would get to know. It reminded him of when he used to play the guitar or at least tried to, but he never continued because it required much more attention than he was willing to give just to play nice. But he still loved to listen along to music!

So once he approached the kid, he would wait for the other kid to take a break as he did not want to rudely interrupt the kid. When the boy with the guitar slowed down and would switch to only letting his fingers slide lightly over the strings of the guitar, Alan took the chance to make himself noticeable. "Hi, mind if I join you?" he would ask, lightly tripping over some of the syllables but sounding more or less smooth. Not that far away from them Tiger would be busy hunting a little butterfly around in the grass.

Percival had been leaning against the tree with his guitar resting in his lap.

The boy was the picture of calm and it was fairly clear he was enjoying the nice day.

Even though the sky was fairly grey, it did not hinder the signs that summer was here to most likely stay.

Percival's favorite part of Hogwarts, besides his dorm, was the Great Lake. Everything seemed so small in comparison.

He did not have to worry about schoolwork or have to keep up appearances. Percival could relax and practice guitar, and he appreciated that.

The boy did not realize when the older boy approached. Seeing how the boy had let his gaze drop back down to study the guitar.

Percival was puzzled on how to overcome his little writer's block. Though Percival was never one to dwell on a problem. No matter how large.

Instead of actually thinking about his little predicament, he ended up spending his time studying the grooves of the guitar.

The guitar was fairly old, having been his Uncle Terrence's guitar when he first came to Hogwarts.

Slight wear and tear showed that it had been well-loved by both his Uncle and himself.

Percival glanced up in surprise to see a boy standing only a few feet away from him.

He was a little surprised he had not noticed the boy approaching sooner.

"I don't mind." he said giving the boy a small nod of reaffirmation.

Percival noticed the other's cat, and it took all it had in him not to scowl at it. The boy flashed a proper pureblood smile before opening his mouth to speak.

"Nice cat." he said.

The boy held his guitar a little tighter in his hands as he felt the urge to fingerpick his guitar.

"My name's Percival Rainwood. What's yours?"
he asked in an attempt to get a conversation started.

Alan smiled at the kid and was glad when he heard from him that he did not mind Alan joining him. Surely it would be much nicer to enjoy a nice afternoon together with the chance of making a new acquaintance rather than spending it alone by a lake; even though that could be fun to every now and then and relaxing in its own way so Alan had been glad the other kid had chosen company over solitude in this situation.

He would give a short nod in return and sat down on the ground near to him before he let his gaze drift over the guitar which looked as if it had been in good use as it showed signs of such, it must have been older and Alan wondered if that meant the other kid had been playing for a while, possibly years. The comment about Tiger pulled him out of his thoughts and he blinked as if the re-orientate himself and his gaze snapped over to Tiger who had at this point given up the chase just to come closer to his owner and the stranger Alan was talking to. "Th-Thanks! His name is Tiger," he introduced the feline to the kid with the guitar and smiled slightly and only then realized, as the other kid introduced himself as Percival, that he had yet to tell him his own name and chuckled nervously before giving him a light smile.

"I'm Alan, Alan Vanes, nice t-to meet you Percival," he finally introduced himself and mentioned to the guitar. "You play a lot?" he wondered out loud and held up his hand as he caught Tiger spying on them, a sign which the cat instantly took as invitation to join them as he pitter-pattered his way over to them and finally nudged his head against the extended hand from Alan to receive some pets.

Percival gave the boy a small smile as the other took up residence near him.

He honestly did not know why he had agreed to let the kid join him. There was plenty of open area for the older teen to enjoy the nice day.

When he went to the lake, the boy was almost always by himself. Sure, he had invited a couple of others here and there. Though he mostly enjoyed just staring out into the murky waters.

Percival didn't mind the company though. It wasn't likely for his practice to go any further than it already had.

Percival glanced back towards the cat as it gave up on playing. The boy tensed slightly as the cat came fairly close.

It was interesting hating and being fearful of cats at the same time.

Some may say it is stupid and implausible. Anger and fear did not often mix together.

Usually one or the other.

Though Percival couldn't help what he felt, and in his own opinion he would place cats with rats any day.

Percival could not help but not smile genuinely at the cat's name. Tiger was certainly a funny name, especially compared to the real thing.

The boy nodded at the other's name.

"Nice to meet you too." he said.

His gaze followed Alan's gaze towards his guitar.

"Ah yeah I do. Do you play?" he asked giving the other a grin.

Talking about his guitar easily put the other in a good mood. A good enough move to ignore the cat that was now only a couple of feet away from him.

As Tiger got closer Alan noticed the sight tension, perhaps a feeling of unease in @Percival Rainwood and quickly picked up the feline to drape him over his lap so that the curious kitten would not get the chance to bother the other student. "You're not allergic t-to cats, are you?", he would ask the other kid just to be completely sure. If that was the case he could always send Tiger away even though the cat would certainly not be all too happy over such a change of attitude so Alan hoped that Percival would be fine enough with the feline being close by.

When the other kid asked him whether he played the third year halted for a moment, hesitating before finally shaking his head slightly. "I t-tried t-to learn it once, but it was nothing for me," he would explain before the other kid would be able to ask questions about why it took him so long to reply. Alan even had his guitar still, back in London as he would never give it away or anything. After all it had been a present from his cousin and was therefore somewhat a family heirloom. At least the third year would be sure that one day it could turn into a family heirloom even though it was not being used at the moment. But certainly there was not much of a difference since most accessory was not being used regularly either and still count as heirlooms.

"Since when do you play?" the third year would ask to keep the conversation going but also because it simply was a topic of interest to him to learn about a possible friend and acquaintance and what interests they had; like Ruka and his fire dancing or George with being smart and writing articles for the school newspaper.

Percival could not help but let out the small breath he had unknowingly held. Having the cat in the other's lap brought some of the tension he felt down. It wasn't the Bengal cat's fault. He knew he was being ridiculous. Yet he was not able to just shut off the underlying fear he held for the fluffy animals. "No I am not. Thanks for asking though." he said giving the other a small smile.

The boy nodded as the other answered his question. Albeit a tad bit late. Percival wondered what had caused the boy to pause before answering. Though since the two had just met, he resigned himself into letting it go. It was highly likely that the other just felt awkward about giving up the instrument. "Guitar is not for everyone. I'm sure you will find something." he said in a hopefully reassuring manner. The last thing he wanted to do was make the boy near him uncomfortable. Though Percival didn't exactly have the best track record when it came to these types of things.

Percival lightly picked at the guitar strings. Nothing definitive came to mind as he played. Just random notes that made an appearance as the boy moved his left arm randomly. This only lasted a couple of seconds before he stopped. He found it quite easy to get bored with the action.

The boy looked back up towards the older boy as the other decided to keep up the conversation. "I've played for a good couple of years now." he said with a grin. Percival had only picked up the guitar when he found out that his Uncle played. It had been a bonding moment between the two. With Percival learning all he knew from his father-figure.

Percival could remember the ecstatic feeling he had gotten when he had been given his Uncle's guitar. The thought brought a warm smile as he remembered. His gaze flicked back up towards Alan. Percival hadn't even realized that his gaze had strayed downward to where his guitar lay. "Would you like to play?" he offered.

Alan was happy to hear that Percival was not allergic to cats, it would make interaction with him a lot easier than it was, because he would not have to leave Tiger elsewhere or check whether his clothes had cat hairs on them. Not that he would mind if he actually had been allergic since it was not anything he could have changed, but it still made it easier in these circumstances. When the other kid began to talk about how guitar was not for everyone, Alan smiled softly at the other boy in some sort of silent agreement and gave a short nod. That certainly was true. "I have recently picked up an interest in flying, actually, even th-though it is still a little scary I am starting t-to like it!"

When Percival offered that he could play some, Alan's eyes lit up lightly, the green of his irises appearing to be a brighter hue of green. A minimal change, easily blamed on the sun hitting his face. "Can I?" he asked, following the others gaze towards the guitar. He had not played a guitar in about a year or so but he did remember a few chords. Perhaps he could play a little melody still.

Percival's eyes had been wondering from the boy to the scenery every so often as they spoke. He hoped he wouldn't come off rude. He usually came to the Great Lake to take in the scenery as he played, and he wasn't about to give up his small tradition. The boy's perked up slightly as the boy talked about the joys of flying. The topic was one that he himself also shared interest in, and his gaze quickly made its way back to Alan.

The boy nodded as the other talked about it being a little scary. It was a bit daunting at first to be so high above the ground. Held up only by a think wooden broom. Percival could still remember his very first broom lesson. The nervousness and excitement stuck fast to the memory. "Flying is pretty great. Sport wise do you like Broom Racing or Quidditch better?" he asked interested in what the boy would end up choosing. Percival already had a favorite, but he decided to wait on voicing his own opinion. As he wanted to not influence the other's answer.

Percival didn't notice the way the boy's eyes seemed a little brighter than usual. Though to anyone who knew Percival they would know that this was not an uncommon occurrence for the blond-haired boy. It wasn't uncommon for Percival to miss details large or small. He nodded as the other asked if he could actually play. "Yeah of course just make sure to be careful." he said giving the other grin.

"Though I have no doubts you will not." he added on quickly. It seemed like he could trust the boy with his guitar. He wouldn't have offered it to him if he had any doubts. Percival slipped the leather strap off of his shoulder. Cradling the guitar with his left hand on the neck and his right on the body. With care, Percival held the guitar up to the older boy waiting for him to grab it.

Hearing the question Alan gave a soft hum as he thought about it for a while. "I actually think that I would prefer broom racing, at least the classic version of it, because it is less likely to be hit by a bludger," the third year mentioned with a light chuckle as he glanced at the other kid, his eyes shining mischievously in a bright green that caught the sunlight within the iris. "What about you?" the third year would ask the other kid back with the same curiosity in his voice. He liked learning more about other people and he was sure that he had a lot to learn about this new kid in front of him. Alan had only met him once, well he had only met him today but he was sure that with a little bit of luck they could actually be friends because so far the impression the Gryffindor had of the other kid was quite positive. Alan would love to befriend him and get to know him so he was focusing on listening to the answer the other student had to offer to him. Alan did indeed prefer broom racing however as it did seem to be the less violent game in itself but knowing all of the other rules that came with it he actually was not all that sure of the two sports he preferred.

Alan smiled and nodded when the other boy handed him the guitar and asked him to be careful with it. "I promise," he would retort with a solemn nod, not exactly sure if he would ever do something that could be bad for a guitar but he knew what the other boy meant and gave a reassuring smile as he gently propped up the guitar onto his knee. Scrunching up his face slightly he would try to remember the things his cousin had thought him a year or so ago before the Gryffindor had given up on the instrument again but after a while he could at least remember the basic accords. He would force his face and mimic to soften again as he bent forwards ever so slightly to make sure to get a look at the guitar strings as he placed his fingers above them. After making sure that he had placed all of his fingers correctly he would let his hand glide over the guitar softly and listen to the harmonic noise that was to be heard right away, and like a child on christmas eve, the third year's eyes would widen in excitement and glee as his concentrated frown melted into a warm smile. "What other things could I play?", he wondered out loud, as he was not actually sure how he would proceed from this point.
