Happy birthday.
I initially considered writing something incredibly profound, though I remembered you still have to read, so I decided I'd spare us both the embarrassment. This is my first time sending a birthday letter so don't make fun of me for it or else I will blast you to high hell.

We don't talk much, but cheers to you for surviving another year in this hell hole of a school, which is a rather remarkable achievement considering the time you willingly spend around duelists older than you. I suppose that also means congratulations on finishing your first year here (makes your captain status sound tougher, hm?).

Though you're young, I'm proud to stand beside you. Well, actually, usually beside you. Occasionally behind you. And sometimes very far away whilst dueling, though you get the picture. You're a nice kid from what I've seen.

You'll learn a lot from your years here, especially from being beaten up in duels.

Again, happy birthday kiddo. No, I will never call you by your name.

P.S. Don't be too scared to approach me or Mahlioz, the other senior. Weirdly enough, the two are the oldest in the team now despite myself making fun of the old men who've graduated. Hopefully, you youngins won't do the same to us. In my defense, the particular 7th year was very bullyable.

[Rather indicative of Cassius’ love of cute letter sets and lack of individuals to send them to, the thank-you letter received back is contained in a cream envelope with orange trim and patterns. The paper, not parchment, is similarly printed with little teddy bears, of which Cassius has drawn little stars around them.

Lacking enough information to fill out a full Muggle-style address line on the front, he's written out “To: Ara Villa, From: Cassius Hirano :)” in black fountain ink. The whole envelope, slightly crumpled from the owl’s claws, is closed with a round yellow sticker.

The response is prompt, but very neatly written.]

Dear Ara,

Thank you so much!! It really means a lot that you've taken the time to write to me, and, for a first birthday letter, I think that you've done rather well. Though I wonder if I'd given the impression otherwise, I wouldn't dream of making fun of you when you've been so nice this entire year.

It's been an honour being captain alongside you. Though we haven't spoken much, this year has nonetheless been super fun and interesting, and part of that has been because of the duel team. I've really learned a lot with the Vipers, and, wherever we stand, on the piste or off it, you’ve been a great inspiration in leading us. I didn't know the first thing about duelling, but the learning curve isn't terrible with so much support.

Either way, thank you again, not just for your letter but for all of your help this year, direct and indirect. I'm wishing you a good summer, and even greater successes for when we get back into the school year!!
