A Fated Meeting
The Magical Menagerie was a bustling centre of noise. There was all sorts of creatures hiding behind shelves and wandering around. The couple at the desk watched with kind eyes as students ran around, looking for their new friends. A couple of students pushed past Hex, pygmy puffs perched carefully in their hands. The girls beamed as they ran outside, over the moon with their purchase.
"Are you sure this is the right place for me?' Hex turned to brother who had decided to be the one to take her to Diagon Alley - against her mother's wishes. She was anxious that her mother was correct, perhaps she shouldn't be getting a pet now, maybe she should wait until a later date when she is older and more responsible.
"You getting cold feet?" her brother, Theo, laughed. "I'll leave you to it, have fun". With that he was outside the door and making his way, probably to buy a new broom. Hex suddenly felt very alone, there were so many options and she had no idea if the pet would even want to go home with her. She made herself small and huddled inside further. The owls were screeching loudly to her left. Theo had an owl, a large white one called Blizzard. She didn't really want to get the same pet as him, she wanted to be different. Carefully, she made her way over to the section with the cats.
The cats were wandering around, a lot of them sleeping but some of them playing. They didn't pay her much mind as she approached. Glancing at them, she saw cats of all different colours and sizes. Some of them were cuddled together and Hex knew she couldn't possibly separate them. The entire situation was beginning to get overwhelming and Hex stumbled back a few steps, ready to go and fetch her brother.
Suddenly, to her surprise, a small object hit her shoulder, followed by a very confused chirp. A small grey kitten had dug its claws in and stared at her with wide eyes.
"Oh I am so sorry, my dear" the shopkeeper moved around the counter to comfort Hex. "He has a habit of climbing places he shouldn't, and with his claws still growing he can't hold on for too long. It was a good job you were there to catch him!" the shopkeeper moved to take the cat of Hex's shoulder but she moved back just out of reach.
"Actually," she smiled to herself, "I would like to take him home with me". The shopkeeper beamed and even the cat looked mildly pleased with himself.
"Of course, dear. What will you call him?"
Looking at the kitten, his dark grey markings looking like fog in a storm. The name came to her in an instant, "Lighthouse"
