Class Project PV Angelo Angelov

When Evelyn first stepped onto the grounds of Hogwarts, she expected everything to be…well, magical. And for the most part, it was. The grounds were beautiful, the students were amazing, and the creatures were adorable. She thought learning magic would be the best part of it all.

So she did not expect for Charms -where she learned all the magic!- to be so…boring. At first, it was amazing! The classroom was big and had an enchanted vibe to it. Her classmates were great and she already made friends with half of the students by the end of her second week. But turns out learning magic is just as boring as learning math. In the mind of Evelyn, you should just need to learn the spell and the wand movements, practice a bit, and be done!

Evelyn stared at her notes, sighing. There is no need for notes in Charms…The lesson was a blur to her. However, once she heard the announcement about a group project, she perked up. Her Charms class rarely got to choose their partners for projects, so she had long abandoned her hope for going straight to her friends. But chosen partners were no problem for an extrovert like her. She made friends as easily as breathing. She watched the board eagerly, watching the quill magically write down names. Soon, hers appeared next to a name she didn’t recognize: Angelo Angelov.

Angelo turned his wand over in his hands idly, occasionally pausing to let his fingers rub over a familiar bump in the wood. He was a little absent-minded as the Charms professor droned on about the lesson, but paid just enough attention to pick up at least the basic idea. Incantations, wand movements, that sort. All he needed to do was get through class now and fill in the missing information afterwards. It would be easier for him to work in the comfort of his common room.

Just when he thought he had his day figured out, his planning was interrupted as he heard the professor instruct everyone to group up into pairs. He straightened up, his eyes sharpening. He hastily looked over the room before spotting a quill scribble away at the board. He found his own name, then his eyes darted to the one next to it: Evelyn Summerfield. Had he met Evelyn before? It didn't ring any bells, but maybe something would come to mind when seeing faces.

The other students slowly began to sort themselves into their own pairs, and eventually, his eyes landed on who he thought to be Evelyn. He stood up from his seat and crossed the room to sit beside the girl. "You're Evelyn Summerfield, right?" he asked, hoping he didn't sit beside the wrong person.

Evelyn looked up from her notes. This must be my partner. She put her quill down and gave him a once over. He was a couple inches shorter and had a quiet aura around him, like he didn’t want to be here. The very opposite of herself. Maybe that’s why Evelyn was just noticing him now.

“Yep. That makes you..” Evelyn trailed off. She glanced at the board as discreetly as she could before continuing. “That makes you Angelo Angelov?” She smiled brightly. Did I pronounce that right? That would be super embarrassing if I didn’t..

“Were you listening to the lesson?” Evelyn asked before he could answer her question. “I wasn’t. It just gets so boring, you know? I wonder if it’s the wizard version of math class. Speaking of math, I was so surprised to see that wizards don’t have a math class! I hate math, but my mum always says it’s important. My dad was a full wizard. A, um, Pureblood, so he probably never learned much math either. It’s kinda obvious because he’s a little crazy.” Evelyn shut her mouth, realizing a bit too late it probably wasn’t smart to imply wizards aren’t too smart in front of someone who might be a Pureblood.

“But, um, anyway…you were listening, right?” Evelyn smiled and laughed, hoping she could divert the attention away from her ‘trash talk’.

"Yeah, I was listening..." Angelo started. "Sort of." He didn't want Evelyn to be dependent on him for any information on the lesson, aware that he definitely didn't know as much as he should've at the moment. He deflated slightly, looking down at the neglected piece of parchment that was supposed to be his notes for the lesson. "I think we may need to touch up on some info in the library," he said, quietly. He didn't mind the atmosphere of the library. It was quiet and had plenty of room, but it couldn't beat a spot by the fireplace or even being in bed.

It was a small comfort to Angelo knowing that Evelyn wasn't really paying attention either. Although Evelyn struck him as a super quick talker, he was glad that they were at least on the same page knowledge-wise. From what she said too, it looked like she also had some normal upbringing. Or Muggle upbringing, in wizarding terms. The idea of him having to nod cluelessly to someone who paid proper attention just didn't sit right with him; he hated being a stick in the mud. Although he could admit it was contradictory of him to not want to be a drag--he wasn't listening much after all--he told himself it was only going to happen once. Maybe next class he would pay more attention. And, he was planning to work alone after class. That showed something, right?

"You think Charms is like math class?" Angelo asked, not catching the resemblance. It felt more like English to him, with the incantations having pronunciation aspects to it. Etymology was also language related, sometimes that showed up in his English classes. He was about to share his opinion on the lack of math classes at Hogwarts, but he quickly chided himself. They should at least get started on the project, considering he was already slightly behind on the lesson. He shifted in his seat, his posture straightening. "Never mind. Uh, can you just tell me what we're supposed to do for the assignment? The lesson's fine, I know enough about the lesson. I mean the assignment," he said, over clarifying the fact that he listened to the lesson.
