Empty Space Locked

SAPPHIRE RIDDLE LOVED THE LARGE, EMPTY SPACE THAT WAS THE BALLROOM AFTER CURFEW. It was quiet and peaceful, as opposed to what she normally saw on two counts. One was when it was before curfew and people swarmed the entire castle. Two was that everyone was always so loud, no matter where you were in the castle.

She also enjoyed the piano in the room, but she couldn’t very well play it now, given that it was 2 a.m. and students weren’t allowed out of bed. She let out a huff of exasperation. She still enjoyed though, and she quite likes the view of the moon out the window.

It was also the one place and time that she felt able to think. It was nicely lit, large enough that she could pace without running into things, and most importantly, it was empty. She could mutter to herself and get lost inside her own head as much as she wanted, unless of course someone found her.

So that was exactly what she did. Back and forth across the vast stretch of marble floor, she walked. As she walked, she talked to herself about her odd premonitions. So far, they only seem to present themselves when you’re in danger, and it’s not the “normal” way. It may even be less of premonitions and more of a heightened survival instinct. But like, extremely heightened. She paused. “But then again,” she said in a normal volume, “Isn’t that the same as a premonition? I mean, first I get the feeling of something happening, then my body moves itself out of the way.

Of course, it could be possession, she thought, then laughed darkly at her thoughts. Though the noise normally didn’t sound right to her ears, it sounded more fitting now, given the thought it had occurred along with.

But if it is possession, why the hell would it be helping me? Unless my contribution would help in its master plan to take over the world.” She couldn’t help laughing again at her inane idea. “Right. Like a measly, undernourished 13-year-old would be any help in a plot for world domination,” she mocked. And now she was mocking herself. She was trying to stop insanity from creeping further into her mind, yet here she was, having an entire conversation with herself. She was mocking herself, for Ghezen’s* sake! She wasn’t helping!

She continued muttering, moving from the topic of premonitions and possession to the release date of the next Wings of Fire book. While she’d been at Hogwarts, she’d been missing quite a few releases. It baffles her how Tui** could write so quickly.

She sighed. “I wish I could order books while at Hogwarts and have them mailed to me,” she muttered. She probably could, but she hadn’t figured out how yet.

I’m just stuck here without my new releases, I’m afraid.
