After a very long day with Taryn, Gloria was absolutely exhausted. With free rein they explored all of the magical shops throughly. They bought all of their school supplies and grabbed some ice cream as a quick snack. After about an hour Taryn's dad met up with us while we go get our wands. That was such a good day with all of the money spending and enjoying Diagon Ally in general. Upon entering the busy Leakey Caldron from the back we grabbed a quick snack from the bar and made our way up to our rooms. Taryn's dad showed us to our room and made sure we were completely comfortable. Oak is already in the room, waiting for us. She leaps gracefully onto the end of my bed and curls up in peace. "Are you guys ready for bed? Have you brushed your teeth?" Taryn's dad said. I gave a small nod because I couldn't muster the energy for commiting to anything bigger. "Well rest well you have a big day ahead of you tomorrow." I settled into bed, with Oak at my feet and Taryn in the bed next to mine, I was excited for the next day.

Taryn lay on her back, staring up at the ceiling. She had Duckie, her goose cuddly toy, in her arms.
The bed was comfortable, the room nice and cool, and yet the sleep wouldn’t come. Today had been a day full of new impressions. Shops, people, a brand-new wand. Taryn was dying to learn her first spell. It would be absolutely wicked to be able to do magic.
The lighting in the room had shifted from the golden glow of the setting sun to a gentle darkness now that twilight coloured the sky with soft blues and purples. It was peaceful. And so, naturally, Taryn’s mind decided this was the perfect moment to worry about tomorrow.
Tomorrow she’d go to Hogwarts. Her mother and sister would arrive at the Leaky Cauldron tomorrow morning so they would be able to wave her goodbye on platform 9¾, she would board the Hogwarts express for the first time, arrive at Hogwarts, and get sorted into one of the four houses. Into Hufflepuff, she hoped. Like her father during his time at Hogwarts. She had already gone over it in her mind multiple times, but kept wondering if she was truly ready. If there wasn’t anything else she could do to prepare herself.
Taryn’s trunk stood at the foot of her bed, fully packed now that it contained her brand-new books, robes and school supplies. It was just her nightgown and Duckie she’d add tomorrow. She might actually put Duckie in her satchel instead, as emotional support, together with the school robe she’d change into during the train ride and the linen pouch of money, from which she was allowed to buy pumpkin juice and something else from the trolley.
Perhaps it would be good to share a compartment with Gloria. It would make it all less scary, for sure.
Taryn turned over onto her side, but it didn’t help much. The sleep wouldn’t come.

‘Gloria?’ she whispered. ‘Are you still awake?’
She waited for a response. Then she continued, ‘Are you nervous about tomorrow?’

Gloria could not stop fidgeting. Gloria usually handled pressure well, by taking deep breaths, or trying to distract herself. But when she fidgets she is very stressed. Another one of her calming methods is to try to figure out exactly why she is so panicked. So she thought. And boy, she thought hard. Well lets see here. I am nervous to go to Hogwarts, but why exactly. I decide to make a mental list. What house I will be sorted into, will I make friends, what if I get a howler, what if I am bad at magic, what other people don't like me. That was her list. God, I am nervous. The next step is to think why those fears are not probable. Well lets see here...it does not really matter what house I will be sorted into, of course I will make friends there will be so many people there, why would I get a howler if I do nothing bad, it is very unlikely that I will be bad at magic because I am a witch, and why would not anyone like me.Then I heard a whisper from the other side of the darkening room. It was Taryn asking if I was nervous about tomorrow. Yeah I am... I actually just made an internal list of why I am nervous. What house I will be sorted into, will I make friends, what if I get a howler, what if I am bad at magic, what other people don't like me. What are nervous too?

Taryn smiled when Gloria mentioned her internal list of things she was nervous about. It appeared she hadn’t been the only one who had lain awake, plagued by thoughts.

She listened as Gloria shared her worries. Most of them Taryn had as well. The sorting ceremony, making friends… She’d have Gloria, of course, but one can’t go an entire year with only one person to talk to. And what if Gloria would be in a different house? There was no guaranteeing they’d have lessons together, and every time Taryn would be in her common room or dormitory, she’d be alone. Either way, it would be good to make some more friends. She couldn’t be with Gloria all the time after all, even if they did end up in the same house.
Upon hearing Gloria mention a Howler, Taryn raised her eyebrows. That was something Taryn herself was not worried about at all. Her parents would never send her a Howler, never. They were not the type to lecture their children, let alone yell at them through a letter. Taryn could remember only one time she’d seen one of them send a Howler. It had been her father who’d done it. At the time, he’d been in an argument with one of his brothers through owls. Positively furious, he’d left the house to buy a Howler at the nearest wizarding post office. Never before had Taryn seen him that angry. And he’d definitely never got that angry at her. No, a Howler she’d most likely not receive in her first year. She couldn’t even imagine what she’d have to do to piss her parents off like that.
It was a curious thought that Gloria’s parents would actually send her a Howler. Taryn didn’t really see them do it. But then again, she’d be the first to admit she didn’t actually know them all that well.

“Yeah… I’m nervous too,” Taryn murmured, nuzzling her face against Duckie. “For tomorrow, mostly. And then we’re going to live at Hogwarts for a year. That’s a long time, I’ve never been away from home that long…”
She was quiet for a moment.

“I hope we’ll be in the same house,” she said then. “I think that would be nice. And I’d like to be able to keep seeing Oak.”
She shifted again, turning over onto her back once more.

“Would your parents really send you a Howler?” she asked out of nowhere.
