With each step, Kaitlyn exited the Hospital Wing into the corridors. If she had to admit, she enjoyed her healer internship. Of course, she could be biased. But it was nice to have such an experience. As a third year, she sadly didn’t know many spells … or potions for that matter … that could help much with healing, or at least most of them could not help with a wide variety of healing applications. Yet, bandages could help with some things, at least.
This meant that the teenage Slytherin student was not able to help other students often … if at all. As such, she was mostly watching. Watching certainly had its place, but she vastly preferred actually being able to help. As a young muggleborn witch, she was glad to have the opportunity to be in the room, and get a first-hand look at what healing looked like in the magical community. Helping or not, she was still observed during the internship … not that she minded that much.
Her low heels collided with the ground as she gracefully made her way to the library … which was one of her favorite locations at Hogwarts (with the greenhouse taking the number one spot, thanks to her love of plants). As it was the middle of the year, she could feel the coursework becoming harder. Certainly, as a third year, that was bound to happen the longer she spent in Hogwarts. Plus, there was also the simple fact that the OWL exams would come quickly during her fifth year. With each passing day, there was less time left before those exams.
The teenage prefect wanted to take some time to complete some homework during some free time during her day. She was often very busy. Her prefect duties … and her desire to be a role model … took up a lot of her time. But, there were also her classes, homework assignments, broom racing … both games and practice, her healing internship, her astronomy internship, and the clubs that she participated in. Plus, her mist hopper bunny, honking daffodils, and dittany … all of which were safely kept in her dorm … were also big parts of her life. Not to mention, she would squeeze time to practice her hobbies, as well.
Kaitlyn was often a pretty busy snake. That just meant that she needed to practice good time management. And organization skills. Or, just to merely get lucky with her days. Luck was a fickle attribute, and one that she didn’t often put much faith in. After all, she preferred having some sense of control over what was happening within her life.
With a graceful twirl, Kaitlyn slipped into the library with her enchanted satchel bouncing against her leg, near the hem of her skirt. A smile crossed her lips, as her blue eyes took in the plethora of tombs on the shelves. She always loved libraries, back when she was a muggle and continuously now as a muggleborn witch. Her footsteps were slightly muffled now that she was in the library, but that wouldn’t change her gracefulness.
Kaitlyn immediately headed to her favorite table. Just as she plopped her satchel on a chair, her brow furrowed as she noticed a piece of parchment lying on top of it. Her eyebrow arched at its sight, and she glanced quickly around, not noticing anyone nearby to lay claim to the assignment. ‘It doesn’t feel right to just read … but, ugh … it may help to find its owner. Just a peek,’ she reasoned, wincing at how easy it was to justify an invasion of privacy.
It took her a mere few seconds to recognize that this homework assignment was one that she completed … last week. So, a third-year assignment. More importantly, Kaitlyn recognized the handwriting. To be quite fair, she wasn’t interested in watching her classmates to see how their penmanship differed from hers (and, to be frank, there was no reason to follow through with such a comparison). Yet, after sharing classes now for three years, she had a pretty good hunch. She pried her eyes away from the assignment, holding it protectively, now looking around to see if she could find the Ravenclaw girl this assignment belonged to.Word Count: 717 words

“Ah—atishoo!”
Brookline shook her head violently and the palm of her hand rubbed against her itchy nose. The Welsh Ravenclaw was on her hands and knees, searching for that darned assignment. She had grabbed her Enchanted Satchel before classes started, figuring that her homework was tucked inside. As Brookline was digging through her satchel, during Charms, she realized that she had either left her late paper somewhere in her dorm or lost.
At the moment, she was messing with her blankets and opening her drawers to make sure that her quite overdue homework assignment wasn’t hiding. The third year sneezed again, and flopped on her stomach to glance under her bed. There were dust bunnies and other lost items underneath the navy bed. No homework. Not quite surprising.
The ice-cold stone floor felt chilly pressed against her abdomen, and Brookline did her best to stand up, but the footboard had other plans. Her skull connected with the slats of the bed, and caused a metallic thud. She fell back, her shoulders slamming into the paved floor.
“Goddamn it!” Brookline hissed, her head pounding. She bit her lip and rubbed the underside of her head with her hand.
When Brookline sat up, she winced, along with hot tears coming to her eyes. Shit shit shit shit. Her brain stung, and she wanted to scream. Cursing again, the Quinn hopped up, and snagged her satchel. Despite the devious ringing in her head, perhaps her paper was forgotten in the library.
Slithering down five floors, the racer took a right on the ground floor. Merlin’s white beard, that shit hurt. Brookline squeezed shut her eyes as she tried to pin-point the exact spot where she had hurdled into the bed frame. Instead of finding a tender location on her head, the brunette realized that the stunning pain radiated all over.
Cracking her eyes open at the right moment, Brookline saw a messy blur of beige and white before she crashed into a statue near the Great Hall. An ugly grimace twisted her fair face and uttered a not-so-lovely, colourful word. Peeling herself off the tiled ground, Brookline exhaled and managed to sneeze once again. Then again. And—can you guess it—again. A glorious triple sneeze.
God. What is wrong with me? Brookline thought as she surveyed herself, making sure nothing else was broken. She was already broken as it was. Quite broken inside in big and small cracks.
After noticing sheer pain blooming in her knee, Brookline carried on to the library. The library made sense if the assignment was there; the Welsh girl was studying late last night in the room. The paper probably slipped out of her Enchanted Satchel. Yeah, that was most likely where her missing homework was. At least, she rightly hoped!
And what will you do if it’s not in there?
Brookline had to think about that. She actually wasn’t quite sure. Would she redo it or simply let the professor know that she had lost the homework somewhere? God, no! That wouldn’t work. The assignment was already tardy as it is. There was absolutely no way that a professor would ever fall for that. If Brookline knew something, she knew that Hogwarts’ precious professors would never take that kind of petty shit. She also knew that even she wouldn’t stoop to that lowly level. Why would she? She didn’t even like speaking to others first.
Ducking inside the library, the girl stayed low. She really didn’t favour “chatting”, today. Brookline had already gone though her fair share of talking today.
Then that’s when she saw a Slytherin, looking for someone. Shit! Even if the other witch wasn’t looking for her, the Ravenclaw still didn’t prefer to be looked at in this condition. Skull, body, and pride bruised. Brookline was, indeed, deadly surprised that she didn’t hear evil sniggering when she flopped to her butt when she rammed into a simple statue. There was always giggling. Always whispers. Always shadows. Always voices. At least, Brookline didn’t hear it. Perhaps the loud pulsing from her head vibrated in her ears too long and too loud.
Perhaps.
Brookline raced behind a bookshelf hopefully before the Snake could catch a glimpse of her. At first, she scanned the spines of tomes before she dared to glance up again. If the girl should come over, then the young Quinn would seem busy. Akin to cowardly prey, the girl who used to be a bright and happy Ravenclaw simply hid and ran away from potential friends. And Brookline herself didn’t quite know the answer.
A moment or two ticked past. The brunette peeked from the shelf, watching the Snake. It was Kaitlyn! Brookline’s friend. And Kaitlyn was holding a piece of paper—
It could be your homework! The small positive part of Brookline’s rang out.
No, for sure it isn’t, Brookline tensed.
Even if it isn’t, you could still catch up with Kaitlyn!
Exhaling, the blue-eyed girl went back to scanning the book titles. Hopefully Kaitlyn would have already passed by the time Brookline came out again. Why did she have to be like this? Did she have to coward and conceal herself every time she saw someone she knew? If anything, she was being such a scaredy-cat. And Brookline knew that her former self would despise that she had crouched this far from the light. The Ravenclaw used to be so outgoing and so full of light, full of giggles and academic thoughts. Now she hides in her room and her thoughts were accursed with dark shadows and villainous voices.
Brookline reached for a novel, and took the book off its home on the library shelf. The title was incredibly dusty so she brushes the grime off with her fingers. Grime filled the air and tickled her nose. Oh shit! She gave her it all, yet, another powerful sneeze rang out. Vibrating extremely loud into the dead-quiet room.
Brookline Isabella Quinn is now exposed to the whole ding dang library. Great going, nose.
Oh no. This is simply fantastic.

Despite her positive diagnosis, Kaitlyn was not in a specific rush to find the Ravenclaw. To be completely clear, if she had lost a homework assignment, she’d be completely upset (and would practically tear the castle apart just to find it … and that would completely disregard the fact that she was a prefect). While she was far from perfect, her organization seemed pretty decent. Well, decent enough, at any rate.
To be quite fair, Kaitlyn wasn’t the type of girl looking to pick a fight at … really any opportunity. She wasn’t a fan of arguments, either. As such, it should come as no surprise what her philosophy was regarding her prefect duties. She wasn’t nitpicky about the rules. Rather, she ignored most breaks unless there was actual danger involved or any other serious issue. Like bullying. And, for that matter, she had a sweet spot for muggleborns, which made sense as she was a muggleborn.
Even with her lackadaisical approach to upholding rules, Kaitlyn was still a rule-follower (for the most part … even she had rules she routinely ignored for herself). In this case, however, she had her mind set on finding the truthful owner of this homework assignment. Not only was it the right thing to do, but it would also give her an excuse to interact with this girl (gasp, a shocking observation. Yet, she was still very much quiet and shy. She was, thankfully, no longer a stutterer … and not as absymal with conversations).
While Kaitlyn would welcome the quiet, based on her introverted nature, she also was well aware that she needed to be a better classmate (and this, coincidentally, had nothing to do with being a prefect). She didn’t want to simply exist in the background as an afterthought. The girl everyone would simply pass over. Way too blasé and reserved. Someone to ignore and not pay attention to. Maybe even too posh to converse with others. No, no, no. Those were not her intentions at all. She wanted to be someone her fellow third years could be comfortable talking to.
While she didn’t want to seem too posh to her classmates, Kaitlyn was well aware of how she moved throughout Hogwarts. Having had dance practice while in her muggle school, St. Ann’s all-girls boarding school, her every movement was tinged in elegance and grace. It was very easy for her to pirouette in the corridors. Frankly, she didn’t mind admitting to that. Although let’s be real for a moment … with all the students at Hogwarts in the halls, navigation could get dicey. A pirouette in a crowded corridor could spell disaster in a heartbeat. So, she was unable to be even more graceful (plus, don’t tempt her).
Squashing the desire to pirouette … at least for now … Kaitlyn continued her search. Just a simple check down each aisle. A glance at the tables, study spaces, and other locations around the library. She wasn’t exactly eagle-eyed it … but she certainly knew the witch whom she was searching for: a brunette-haired Ravenclaw in her year. Nevertheless, she wasn’t able to spot the witch. Of course, there was the simple fact that there was almost a near constant movement of students walking around the library. Entering and exiting. Obtaining books. Returning books. Checking out books. No matter what, she couldn’t possibly keep an eye on every corner of the library.
A small frown crossed Kait’s lips. ‘Aw, I wanted to talk to her today … and not just to return this homework. Ah, there isn’t really much that I could do. I guess I can try to search the castle … or hang around the Ravenclaw tower. Could I even attempt to enter as a prefect? Probably not. And, honestly, it probably wouldn’t be worth my attempting, anyway. I’d rather not get in trouble, even if it is to help someone else. I’ll hold on to it for now. If I don’t see her in the meantime, I could always return it tomorrow in class.’
Even without being a prefect, Kaitlyn liked to think that she was a trustworthy witch. At least, someone who could be trusted to do the right thing. Like in this case with returning a homework assignment … even if it was an older assignment. She had absolutely no desire to cheat or do anything of that nature. This was a simple return, in her opinion. Simple enough, anyway, when you would have to wait until the next day to do so.
Kait gently spun on her heel with her brow furrowed. She headed back to her table, with the homework in question clutched carefully in her hands … almost as if she was holding some rare artifact (or touching a sensitive plant from the greenhouse). Before she could return to her table, however, she heard a sneeze. A powerful sneeze. Coming from one of the bookshelves. Hadn’t she searched that area before? Books didn’t just randomly sneeze (although that did sound like something a magical book could do, but she was unaware of any that actually did so).
‘Wait … didn’t that sneeze sound familiar?’
With an extra step to the table, Kaitlyn rummaged through her satchel momentarily to unearth a handkerchief. She always tried to be prepared. Tried being the keyword in that sentence. Hopefully, she could provide even just a small act of comfort. Gingerly clutching the homework and handkerchief now, she headed over to the sneezing bookshelf.
Upon rounding the corner, Kaitlyn smiled kindly when she saw Brookline. The teenage Snake took a step toward the Ravenclaw and offered the handkerchief to her. “Hey, Brook,” she greeted her quietly.Word Count: 947 words
