CICTF Piranha vs. Catfish

Ethan had kicked around soccer balls since he was small — muddy fields with his uncle, running until his legs burned. It's not like the game has held a special place in Ethan's heart (unlike Quidditch) but it's a pastime that has been a constant presence since his youth. The game 'Capture the Flag,' however, was entirely new. The rules have been explained succinctly enough that even a child could understand it: find the opposing team's flag, return it to your own base, win the game. A straightforward and easy-to-follow set of instructions. Yet, this concept is made far more difficult by the fact that Ethan is playing this new game for the first time. Still, he's trying to remain optimistic. Yes, he's flown around on a broom and narrowly avoided bludgers. So it can't be too different, can it? Plus, he's athletic and in shape. If all fails, his athleticism should be more than enough to compensate... surely.

As he's deep in thought, his attention is suddenly stolen by the two recognisable figures a few feet ahead of him — his fellow Quidditch team members, @Pax Zhang and @Harlan Montgomery. At least he won't be venturing into this unfamiliar territory completely alone. “HEY GUYS!” He jogs over to them. “Fancy seeing you here! Are you playing too?”

CICTF Piranha vs. Catfish
Louca had hit the end of the year and was ready for more adventure. So, when the trip to Castelobruxo had come up, he couldn’t resist signing up. While travel in North America had been frequent with his parents, they had made a concerted effort to return to New Orleans every year before summer, so he would consistently go back to the same area. That wasn’t entirely what Louca would have preferred, but he just shrugged and did what he could to help out and alleviate his boredom. This would be his first true international trip, and he was impatient to explore.

That being said, a good game was not something he could pass up. He really did not regret the decision when he followed the group into the rainforest. Louca was practically bouncing as he grinned in glee, ready to tackle the competition. That might be literal, but time would tell. He wasn’t against doing anything to win. And he knew quite a few slight of hand tricks, or just tricks in general that he had either learned from his parents or figured out on his own. So that meant his team could not lose. Or so his confidence told him.

Louca headed towards his team, looking toward the person who first spoke. “I mean if we don’t win, it won’t be from lack of talent or lack of trying. We’ve got this I’m sure!” He looked around, trying to figure out at a glance where he would best fit, and where he could be the most use. It seemed like he was in good company given the other comments, though he had to admit the comments from the girl about hiding bodies might have been a little far for him. Louca wasn’t sure if he should step away in case he became one of those bodies, or be confident that their enemies would feel her wrath.

Romélie can do no wrong. At least, that's what the girl grew up believing. However, signing her name on the list of students volunteering to visit Castelobruxo might've been the first mistake she'd ever made. The second being signing up for the game of capture the flag.

Now, she found herself trudging through the humid rainforest, not entirely sure how her body was even still properly functioning under the suffocating heat that the place offered. She was sure she had even stopped breathing for a moment, for whatever she was inhaling did not resemble air, but felt more like hellfire pouring into her lungs. Had she died already? To make matters worse, she was already rationing the water in her third and last bottle, taking only the smallest sips, thinking to herself how she really should've packed another one.

The other students seemed to be unfazed by the weather conditions, Rome, on the other hand, was mostly used to the snowy mountains and crisp, dry air. If anything, it reminded her of her time at Tenusa. Still, this was much worse—it felt like someone had trapped her inside a greenhouse and forgotten to let her out. She made a mental note to herself: poor life choices, strike one.

Coming to a still, Romélie took a seat on one of the fallen tree trunks as the handsome headmaster of this forsaken place started blabbing on about the rules of the game. She didn't catch much, more preoccupied with scanning the crowd for an unattended, unopened water bottle she could steal.

Instead, her eyes landed on something—or rather, someone.

Her toy.

Harlan fucking Montgomery was here.

Rome's face split into a smirk as she kept her gaze on her target. Then suddenly, she was on her feet, showing way more enthusiasm than she had before—just as the crowd dispersed and the headmaster approached her team. Harlan seemed to be in it too, and if anything, it made her grin widen, resembling that of a Cheshire cat.

She sent him a cheeky wink before scanning the faces of her teammates. Unknown. Older—some by a year, others seemed to be on the verge of graduating. Reliable? Only time will tell.

"Bonjour, comrades," she addressed them, smiling dazzingly as she dropped her sunglasses from her hairline down to her nose, as they already started moving towards their base.

She fell in step beside two Hogwarts students—one whose mind was already plagued with doubts, and they decided to express it out loud, and the other who Rome had caught earlier mentioning that the grounds would make a perfect place to hide a body. A crazy thing to say; still, the girl piqued Rome's interest. So much in fact, that Harlan lay forgotten in the back of her mind for a moment.

"Yeah, I'm on your team. We're most definitely winning this," she told the Asian student casually. With that, Rome glanced around at the rest of the team. "I'll be available for autographs and pictures after lunch if anyone's interested." A beat. "And if you have any water bottles with you, I can keep them safe during the game"

━━ summary, this thread is happening on JUNE 26TH, 2026 in the MORNING with THE CATFISH CREW / wc: 243.

Catfish was a crazy thing to be referred to as, but Harlan decided that he wouldn't let the thought of a Piranha devouring its prey to be a foreshadowing on what was about to happen. It was fairly amusing to see how many Gryffindor Students had been on the team. " Not the Gryffindor Quidditch Team just taking on like half of the spots. " A slight chuckle as he nodded towards @Ethan Smith and @Pax Zhang. " Now you get to see how good I am with a wand too. " His broom racing debut was awfully embarrassing but he had gotten his life together since that miserable display — at least, he had hoped.

The others he had seen in some way but a few of the International students were a surprise, especially when Romelie appeared. How surprising. " I never took you as a competitor, De Brissac. " And to be fair, he still hadn't and thought she might be dead weight in something like this. Despite overhearing how she did in Hockey, this was a whole different league of competition. At least she was nice to look at.

" If you don't try your damndest to win, I will have your heads. " His words started with orders to Rome but he scanned the entire team for full effect. Harlan loved competition and wanted to demolish their foes, hoping that annoying Ravenclaw Seeker had been on the other side of the forest. Harlan, specifically, had some spells ready to embarrass her before graduation.

Capture the Flag was a rather unfamiliar activity for Maxi, but he supposed he had a basic understanding of the rules after it was announced. A bit complicated indeed, but he hoped that he would not do anything wrong. Final official activity of his school days, and his goal was not only survival, but victory.

While he signed this up with @Gellert Schroeder, whom he now had the audacity to address as his boyfriend, they apparently forgot to state that they would prefer to be assigned together. Okay, at least it slipped Maxi's mind; maybe Gellert was actually intrigued by being on different teams. Anyway, he felt a bit disappointed - not that he wanted to hold hands forever like some naïve kids who could barely understand what a relationship meant; it was that this was probably the last time they seventh year oldies from different schools could have the chance to be on the same team. Maxi was horrified when he found out that his boyfriend was not merely on a random other team, but the opposite one - well. Fate, perhaps. They would probably meet somewhere in the middle, hopefully, and he did wish that he wouldn't be biased when it did happen.

Nevertheless, he was not going to meet Gellert in person anytime soon, and he still craved for victory. Maxi lined up with his own team, feeling a little reassured to find quite a few familiar faces. He grinned at fellow schoolmates @Quentin Gagné and @Axel Brooks, and a merry "Bonjour!" would be his greeting. They were just fleeting faces on campus for Maxi, him being older than them and on a different sports team, but they looked reliable enough. Honestly, he would already trust them just for the fact that they were from Beauxbatons. He had a longer history with @Rose Moon, having met her at a notorious - he felt sorry for using the word, but still - Hogwarts ball in their third year. Gosh, that was so long ago. It seemed that they just had that mysterious ability to come across each other during large international events after all these years, and in fact, he had just chanced upon her during the Koldovstoretz event in February. "Fancy seeing you again, Rose." He would offer her a warm smile. She was very competent and quick in action, and Maxi was glad to have her on the same team.

Giving the rest of the Piranhas wide smiles, he listened to their pep talks attentively, nodding as the team carried on. "Allez les Piranhas!" He chuckled as Rose asked him about the French version of "Let's go Piranhas". Piranha was a fine name, which was delightful indeed. "We'll win this together."

Gellert smiles as he looks upon his teammates and searches for Maxi. He always searches for Maxi whenever he knows him to be in the same room or area. It is involuntary at this point. He hopes he will continue to search for his boyfriend, petit ami, and love him in every way. Gellert smiles at the thought as he looked at green rainforest, the clear sky, and the ground beneath his feet. It was a beautiful day, his surroundings reminding him, unexpectedly, of the wand tree farm his family was proud owners of for a century. Maxi and he and signed up together. Gellert because of his tendency to want to repeat the dramatic circumstances of literary fiction as fun, and its conduciveness to flirting with your lover and enemy. He would, of course, attempt to aid his team to victory as best as he could, but he would not mind losing or winning. This was of course his mindset about a lot of things these days, as he found himself close to graduation. None of his teammates were familiar personally to Gellert, though he may have heard of Vale or Pax in the Quidditch world. He takes a deep breath in, using the strong atmosphere as an encourager and puts his focus on the capture flag game.

This event is part of the Castelobruxo International Capture the Flag event
26TH OF JUNE, 2026 IN THE JUNGLE ARENA
MODERATION — ROUND ONE.
The teams were sent off their bases, and the Headmaster claimed his observation spot in a nearby tower. Since it would take a while for the teams to hide their flags, he calmly strolled through the familiar jungle until he reached the ladder. However, even to him, the nature could be unpredictable. From there, he got a birds-eye view of the different zones and the environmental obstacles that rolled in over the parts of the jungle seemingly at random. He was largely left unaffected himself regardless of what would happen in the arena. It was worth mentioning that Santiago had high expectations for this lot, being older and, hopefully, wiser.

Casually, he leaned over the edge of the observation spot, observing team Piranha in zone one, or what was left of them once the majority had headed to zone two. The youngest player, @Axel Brooks had been pulled in from the lower years on a whim, and Santi wondered if it had been a mistake to entrust him to manage the tougher competition; the boy looked horrified. Entrusted to be accompanied by @Quentin Gagné, perhaps for emotional support, which Santiago was inclined to agree might be necessary, the two of them remained by base. The jungle's unpredictable movement quickly changed the stakes when a heatwave drove in over zone one. Heat rippled in the air between him and the arena. One of the milder sorts, though he could only assume, seeing both boys seemed unfazed by the heat.

That said, whether the heatwave had anything to do with it or not, Axel attempted to crack a joke at his older counterpart, who was busy trying to configure some kind of trap. It was difficult to say what kind of trap it was supposed to be, but the ill-timed joke, perhaps due to nerves, distracted the Frenchman from properly executing his one assigned task. Disappointingly, the boy gave up before his attempt had amounted to anything substantial.

In the next zone, the rest of team Piranha encountered far more comfortable temperatures from the waterfall cooling the air, but they would regret not being on their high guard. Just because the weather was agreeable at the moment, did not mean that other creatures wouldn't take the opportunity to try to steer them off course. The lagoon beneath the waterfall, connecting to one of the jungle rivers, invited for sea-born creatures to come close to the players attempting to cross. The older students didn't seem to notice the Iara lurking in the waters, until @Linda Ramirez and @Reyna Evergreen was suddenly venturing deeper in, seemingly transfixed by something in the water. Even Santi was alarmed, wondering if he ought to step in if no one else noticed. Luckily, the younger girls were not alone, and with @Rose Moon's quick thinking, they managed to scare the river seductress off, sparing their two younger teammates from unpleasant consequences.

The Catfish team was an interesting bunch, showcasing more brawl than brains. @Romélie de Brissac, like Axel, was pulled from the lower bracket, but compared to him, she appeared to have the time of he life teasing the older boys. The enormous anaconda attacking the players in zone three didn't intimidate the cocky mixture of Hogwarts and Beauxbatons students. He would have been concerned for their safety if it hadn't turned out in their favor. The Headmaster hadn't expected the sheer bloodlust in these children. It wouldn't have surprised him if @Romélie de Brissac and @Vale Ashwood would have tried to jump the snake for the hell of it. Only @Pax Zhang fell victim to the Anacondas constraints, immobilizing her for the next round to come, but with no shortage of impulsive Catfish itching for a fight, @Harlan Montgomery ran to her aid to fight the snake off of her.

Well, that was an intense unfolding, Santi thought with a deep sigh, before turning to observe the last zone. By base, a group of monkeys tried to snatch the wands of the players, but the athletic boys put their hard-earned muscles to use, for once, and fought them off without trouble. In time, the capuchin monkeys gave up and resorted to lounge in the trees, not bothering them anymore. @Marshal Mozor had by accident avoided the snake attack by staying behind, though he came to no more use for the rest of the round. What a shame.

After warding off the monkeys, @Gellert Schroeder made a decent attempt at a trap, but having his romantic partner on the opposite team would prove the be an obstacle too hard to overcome. A few tweaks short of acceptable, he was distracted from completing it properly. Another sigh of exasperation escaped the Headmaster to the point where he had to look away for a moment. The incompetence of some would never cease to amaze him. Meanwhile, Santiago held little hope for the Gryffindor jock, who seemed to have made more gym progress than academic. Against all odds, @Ethan Smith completed a full-fledged flag search, and while it had been stupid to assume the opponents would hide their flag in the other teams base, at least he could now confidently report that the flag was not hidden in zone four.

It was a start.

HOW TO PLAY

The game ends when either team successfully retrieved the other teams flag to their base. Team Piranah will be starting the game in Zone 1 and Team Catfish will be in Zone 4 at the opposite end of the arena. There will be at most 10 rounds, each requiring a post of 200+ words. Please make sure you include your character's stats in your post.

During the first round only, each team must state which zone their flag is hidden in to the thread moderator. You may chose to hide the flag in any of the 4 zones. The flag remains in that zone unless successfully discovered or moved through gameplay mechanics. Do not reveal in game where the flag is located.

Each round, everyone in the team must make at least one action from the Capture the Flag actions list, unless they are unable to act due to a status effect or restriction. These actions are zone dependent. The team scores points by making successful flag actions or interceptive actions towards a flag carrier. Please note that players may only move between adjacent zones and cannot skip zones while travelling.

At the conclusion of each round, the zone state map will be updated to reflect all player locations. Players may only target characters who are in the same zone as them at the end of the previous round. If a target moves out of the zone during the following movement phase, the action automatically fails, with the exception of Flag Intercept and non-magical support actions that include a chase mechanic. When performing these actions, the player automatically follows the target into the destination zone as part of the interaction.

If the action fails while chasing, the pursuing player is left behind in the original zone while the target successfully gains distance.

Rules regarding roll resolution, action priority, and other game mechanics can be found HERE.

At least one member of the team must owl the entire teams' action list to @Santiago Peralta before the posting deadline.

With a grin, Pax could feel the good energy radiating from their team as they joked and strategized, heading over to the start position. Once the game had begun, it only made sense for them to rush forwards and make as much progress as they could as they fought their way out of the trench.

"Come on Zhang," they muttered under their breath, hoping that their teammates wouldn't hear them with all the noise and rustling as they charged through the terrain. "You're not just a quidditch buff, you're a full-fledged athlete. You got this."

However, as they entered even deeper jungle, and thicker trees, Pax's lack of perception would fail them. Daring to venture slightly off the path the rest of their teammates had forged, it was only too late as they felt a cool snakeskin curling round their legs, basically tripping them up as they nearly face-planted onto the ground. At this point, the team could definitely hear them cursing out pretty much everything that they could see as they battled fruitlessly against the giant snake.

With a large sigh, they did their best to retrain their mind on the positives. They'd had the experience from quidditch, at least. "Stick to the plan guys!" They called out to the rest of their team. "I'll work something out!" Gripping at the snake, they had to fight to detangle themselves from its grasp.

As Vale ran into what was 'zone 3', she efficiently dodged a giant snake. But she watched as one of her allies wasn't so fortunate. Pax Zhang. At least the snake was lucky enough not to grab her.

She sighed, tapping her black nails against her arms in observance. "Plans. Plans. Plans never go the way you want." Vale looked all over her person, searching for anything close to being helpful. "You know. I am starting to like this place. Everywhere I look, something seems capable of killing you. You think they're open to transfer students next year?" Vale finally went to attempt to work at the snake for Pax Zhang. Even with her eagerness for murder and death, at least she's somewhat willing to prevent it at a point...usually.

Vale soon stopped, and looking to her allied teammates. "Well, don't just stand there. More people tugging at this poor thing will get it off. Maybe we can even use it to eat a corpse once we're done here!" She turned cheerful at the prospects, only to stop again. "Ya'll hear that?" Vale made a sharp-toothed smile, swearing upon hearing the sound of rushing feet arriving towards the team. "I hear our victims approaching. We didn't even have to hunt them! She crackled, forgetting all about Pax Zhang not long after, abandoning them to an unknown fate. "Let's destroy them, nice and slowly, and very, very painfully."

Louca had no problem with being one of the ones racing forward. His skills and personality definitely supported it, and he kept his eyes on the lookout. What he had not been expecting was the cursing he could hear from one of his teammates. He didn't look around, especially not when the person's voice urged them on, figuring it might have been a pit or some sort of trap. It did nothing to make Louca more cautious, excitement coursing through his veins.

Though he forced himself to stop and turn back around once he heard that rather interesting voice calling out to help get something off. He had to admit, he hoped it was something mostly tame, not a jaguar or something like that. Even for a magical school that seemed a little too crazy. While there was no jaguar, there was a large snake, and he had to say he wasn't a huge fan. "Ummmm.....how exactly do we expect to tug that off? Shouldn't we you know, use a spell or something?" He just really didn't want to touch the thing. Even when the snakes were smaller, he wasn't a huge fan. The bayou was home to several types of snakes, and he could never keep which were venomous, so he chose to make sure he never got too close if possible.
