Whispers from the Owlery

Ever since Haeli had arrived at Hogwarts, she had wanted to explore every hidden nook and cranny of the massive castle. While she had discovered some truly incredible spots during her wandering, the one place she continuously came back to was the Owlery. She found herself walking up the cold, spiral stone staircase multiple times a day. She came here for absolutely everything. Haeli loved hanging out with the majestic birds, but she also loved the pure, uninterrupted serenity of the tower.

Once she reached the top of the stairs, a perfect rectangular opening in the stone bricks revealed the breathtaking scenery of the Hogwarts grounds. Looking out, Haeli could see the bustling Courtyard, the shimmering waters of the Great Lake, the dark, mysterious edge of the Forbidden Forest, and the glass roofs of the Herbology greenhouses. She could see literally everything from up here. Dozens of owls perched along the high rafters, shifting comfortably and softly rustling their feathers. The Owlery had quickly become her ultimate sanctuary for reading, finishing her heavy homework load, writing letters, or just sitting quietly and thinking. Up here, the soothing hooting of the birds blended perfectly with the distant, lively roar of students walking the grounds down below.

Today, Haeli’s boots clicked against the stone steps as she carried a tightly rolled letter in her hand. Her mission was to recruit a reliable owl to safely deliver this message to her grandmother. She missed her grandmother so much since the term started. Haeli was always writing to her to make sure she was okay, but her grandmother hadn't quite figured out the wizarding post system yet. She had only managed to send Haeli one single reply, despite what felt like the millions of letters Haeli had sent her way.

Because of that, this specific letter was a bit of an instruction manual. Haeli had written out detailed steps explaining how to give the owl a treat, how to make it stay while she scribbled a quick response, and exactly how to tie the note with a piece of string onto the bird's bony leg before sending it back to Hogwarts. A ball of anxiety knotted Haeli’s stomach as she stepped onto the top landing; it had been almost three weeks since she last heard from her. She was absolutely dying to know how her grandmother was doing, and she desperately needed all the details about how the animals were faring back on the farm.

Approaching a gentle, snow-white barn owl perched near the ledge, Haeli extended her hand and offered a small treat from her robes. The bird blinked its dark eyes intelligently, letting out a soft click before accepting the rolled parchment. "Please take care of her," Haeli whispered, gently stroking its soft feathers as she secured the letter. With a powerful flap of its wings, the owl launched out of the rectangular window and into the open sky. Haeli leaned against the stone ledge, watching its white silhouette grow smaller against the horizon, sending all her love and anticipation with it into the clouds.
