Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
| E | ✧ ![]() banner by prat. ![]() It happened within a few seconds. Really, Esme had blinked, and suddenly everything was going wrong. Her spell, though it had formed, failed to hit Tatiana — even though the girl continued to stand still. Then, before she could even process the sheer humiliation of the miss, the cloud above them thundered, and in a flash of light, Livia was on the ground. Esme’s eyes widened. Her friend seemed far more fragile like this — as if she simply had far less stamina than the average person, and the constant failure and missing had exhausted her. Even the graceful movements couldn’t keep up with the storm cloud that Livia herself had conjured. A lump formed somewhere in Esme’s throat, her jaw dropping slightly. She wanted to rush towards Livia, help her up — though she knew it would have been foolish to do so. Standing there, frozen, Esme didn’t even notice Verity sling yet another Incendio her way: it hit her square in the shoulder, making her hiss slightly. The burn was unpleasant, but she should probably have been used to it after the last round and a half she spent with her robes inflamed, Esme thought, suppressing an eyeroll. She forced a deep breath, trying to focus on the remainder of the duel. Livia would be fine — no club sanctioned activity would lead to serious damage. Hopefully. All Esme could do was her best. ![]() action. as strategized. ✧✦✧ |

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
Lady Luck was a fickle mistress: just as the Slytherin team had been looking like they might win turn the match around after all, their own spell went off to remove one of their team members from the field…
Edward frowned softly as his flippendo had missed Livia, only to watch her fall silent to the miasma… dueling sure could be dangerous, no wonder it wasn’t allowed without proper moderators and with healers on stand-by…
He knew however that even now his fellow Hufflepuff weren’t completely in the clear yet, especially with their team leader having already taken a few knocks, he steeled his resolve and appeared for their next actions…

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
The following rounds after weren't perfect, but the storm cloud over Slytherin's head achieved exactly what Hufflepuff had been trying to do for the last few spell rounds. That is, they had finally taken out one of three Slytherins. Slowly, Vera reminded herself. As long as they kept putting even a little bit of pressure, they were still in this game.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
mentioning @--
They just couldn't find their footing. Cassius’ spell was easily dodged for the thousandth time, and though none came back his way, he couldn’t help but feel a bit humiliated. Mercy was out there in the stands, watching, likely waiting, only for them to continue losing ground. Someone—something, perhaps— out there was surely laughing at them. Karma, though he had little reason to think that they’d accrued much of it in their past few rounds, had a cruel sense of humour.
He was not laughing. It was difficult to, as the nasty effects of Curse of the Bogies finally faded from him and the cresting pressure lifted a little too late to do anything but watch, horrified, as Livia's own lightning struck her unconscious.
They'd hoped to weaponise Metelojinx. It'd be a passive threat—nothing so terrible as a well-aimed attack yet still scary enough to force Hufflepuff’s hand. Of course, Cassius had realised their accidental danger the moment that the storm clouds began looming over their own heads, but he hadn’t thought that it’d end up like this. His heart in his throat, Cassius stepped involuntarily towards her, but the moment that he’d turned to do so, Esme—caught similarly in a state of shock—took a burst of fire to the shoulder.
The flash of light and pain dealt to his teammate jolted his alarm into sharp relief. Duelling was a team sport, but not in the way many others were—Cassius couldn’t help feeling justified in fearing for his fellow Vipers, yet he couldn’t rush help either of them. There was the very real danger of being hit down himself with a well-aimed spell. He’d pored over the rules enough to know that Livia would be taken immediately to the Hospital Wing and cared for properly, but those on the piste couldn’t afford to lose hope even when facing terrible odds. It’d be disingenuous to their months of training and rather unfair to their fallen teammate if they stopped now. They couldn't just let her loss be in vain; No matter the outcome, it was enough to try, and try they would.

Yeah she was right it was wishful thinking. The Vipers luck did not turn around in fact. Esme made the smart choice of dodging any attacks instead of firing back. However it was all in vain as even though she was able to dodge the Rictumsempra from Verity, She was hit by Edward's Incendio. Being burnt so many times was definitely not for the young girl whatsoever. She had passed out. Her skin was burnt badly. Thankfully it would be fine for another round or two so Fawkes didn't have to go pull her out just yet. But still the pain from the heat must have been intense.
In other news Tatiana still did not do anything once again. She was just still. No spell was coming her way but nevertheless she should still do something instead of just standing there. Fawkes sighed. She was going to have to report this after the match.
Cassius atleast seemed to be having better luck. With Verity distracted by the fact Esme was down, Cassius was able to accurately hit her squarely in the chest knocking her back a bit. It wasn't enough to knock her out but it was a sizeable amount of damage tho.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
They'd finally done it. Three versus one now. Vera hadn't felt this comfortable in a duel since, what... Her first duel back in October last year? Funny to think that her first ever duel had been decent, then the second afterwards had come crashing down despite the hours of practice she'd put in. A learning slump, perhaps, because now she felt as if her previous efforts were finally paying off.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
Edward celebrated silently in his head as another Slytherin team-member went down, but he knew that he couldn’t celebrate too long they still had to finish the match and Verity was looking pretty roughed up…
Edward thusly turned his attention to the final remaining Slytherin, focusing his attention and mind on how he might bring this - his first official match - to a successful end.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
mentioning @--
To try, especially in such 'trying times', was sometimes to realise that they were fighting the uphill battle. It was unreasonable and more than a small part foolish, but too dignity-defying to stop now that they'd gotten somewhere. Cassius's Flipendo struck true, but so too, as terribly reliable as every other clash they'd had so far, did Hufflepuff's.
It all happened in a split-second, the moment that he'd realised they'd levelled their wands elsewhere. He had been passed over round after round, never in the great danger his teammates had of retaliation, but it simply seemed unfair that they'd choose Esme--injured Esme, Esme of much dedication and greater pride, Esme, who had forgone spellwork in favour of dodging and yet still faced a good strategist's cruelty.
A honed attention, a flick of the wrist, a burst of flame—!
"No!" He caught himself right as she fell, the cool, watery pass of his magic—normally so strange and comforting, now that he'd found a grasp upon it—suddenly cold-shocked in jolting terror. Cassius had censored himself the entire duel to match his teammates' stoic demeanors, but no unified front could help him now. Any moment now, she'd be taken away as Livia would, and he'd either have to accept the singular burden they'd left him with or buckle under it.
And yet, the match did not pause. Shouldn't it have, even for a moment? Had Cassius misremembered established custom, or would they not be afforded this moment of neutrality? A single glance, frantic as it was, revealed that their moderator remained neutrally in place, expectant, even as all three badgers refocused their attentions on him. Only two of them held real winning intent, but even one was enough to intimidate. Definitively cornered, the very last Viper left standing on the piste, Cassius couldn't help but feel trapped. If this had just been another duel and he an accustomed spectator, he could have admired Hufflepuff's thoroughness and nonchalant manner, but such ruthless habits weren't so commendable up close.
Cassius hadn't expected his first duel to be like this. No one did. He'd anticipated the risk of failure, as well as anyone could when realistically considering their future, but their practice shouldn't have led to such an easy defeat. With all of Hufflepuff still up and only him in Slytherin's place, it seemed to be imminent. This was... This was it, and any further action from him would only be for his teammates' sake.
And yet, weren't many of his actions for his teammates' sake, if only to say that he'd tried his hardest to think of them, or of anyone, until the end? Both Livia and Esme had not faltered once targeted, so why should he? He couldn't just forsake them by stopping now, not when they'd done their all to get to this point. Cassius tightened his grip on his wand, the pretty mayhaw white-knuckled, and tried to steady himself. Reclaim the anticipatory loss, and if Hufflepuff struck him down now, he'd at least be able to claim his first duel of the last stage's season as his own.

Despite being the only one left standing, Cassius looked determined to do his best. Fawkes admired his resolve. Anyone lesser may have panicked greatly if they were in the same position as him. But instead he stood his ground against the badgers. It seemed that the viper wasn't out of venom just yet.
The badgers of course were all aiming for Cassius. Well except for Tatiana. Once again she just stood there. Boring. Fawkes enjoyed the thrill of a duel. It was fast paced with constant spells back and forth. The fact Tatiana just stood there doing nothing made it much more boring.
Edward tried to cast Flipendo at the last viper. However the viper managed to slither his way out of the spell's way. But it was right back into Verity's well timed green sparks charm. The light was blinding even though she wasn't even in the direct path of the spell. Probably had something to do with how light reflected with her glasses.
Cassuis proceeded to cast Fumos. Were they trying to blind each other or their moderator?? Cause for the life of Lear's Discombobulated raccoons she couldn't fathom why the large amount of vision restriction spells. Well time to 'see' what this was going to result.

Hufflepuff vs Slytherin: Match 8
Perhaps it was not surprising at all that, considering their advantage, Hufflepuff pressed on. Strength in numbers, as the saying went. Hufflepuff could now direct more firepower at just one opponent rather than try chip away at everyone slowly. Only now, none of them could see anything. Vera huffed. Fog had been her specialty for the last season, and no one had thought to obscure her vision like this before. Slytherin wanted to give her a taste of her own medicine, it seemed. Fair. At least it affected all of them and not just some of them.
Action: as strategized
