She was moderating a practice duel, which she thought would give her a new perspective of the sport. In part, it was also because the endless studying had her bored and agitated out of her mind. ---She had never moderated a duel before, but that was nobody's business. She just had to keep her head high and call out words of encouragement or amusement to the duelists on the piste, and she was sure everyone would have a wonderful day. ---Today's duel consisted of three first years and a second year, all known to her except Mikaela, whom she seemed to keep running into. Guinevere was dressed as usual, no frills or extra clothing that would restrict her movement. Who knew what crazy, lopsided spells the kids would throw? She was certainly not seeking to be hit, today of all days. She had been here quite often the last couple of days. Although for various reasons. Today she wasn't moding a duel. No she was participating in one. She did enjoy whenever she got the chance to duel regardless if it was official or unofficial. There was a certain thrill she got out of it.
Today her duelling partner was Avis, a fellow Ravenclaw and a member of the quidditch team. Honestly what was with Fawkes and duelling with members of the quidditch team? She wasn't complaining but it was a strange coincidence. Anyways she looked to see who the opposing team was.
There was a gryffindor girl she didn't quite recognise. She looked familiar tho. Perhaps Fawkes had seen her around? She appeared to be a first year. Now the other girl was most definitely know to her. Very well infact. The Ravenclaw girl was none other than her roommate Mikaela. Fawkes was a bit apprehensive about this. She didn't want to injure someone she considered to be a good friend. But at the same time this was a duel they had to duel each other. Perhaps she should give her some frogs afterwards as an apology.
Fawkes got ready to begin the duel, taking her stance with a deep breath.

Avis stood on the piste, wand in hand. She wasn’t exactly sure how she’d gotten roped into the second duel she’d ever participated in but here she was, not a familiar face in sight.
Well, that wasn’t entirely true. She recognized her fellow Ravenclaws from around the common room. Dorm mates she believed. But the Gryffindor she hadn’t seen before and the older Slytherin girl moderating was a relatively new face, despite her invitation to the duel.
Avis gave everyone a quick smile in greeting and mumbled an introduction to her partner, who also seemed to be connecting names with faces.
“Avis, by the way. Seen you around the tower,” she mentioned, absentmindedly studying their opponents as she spoke. First years. Which didn’t mean anything truly in comparison to the Ravenclaw herself. She may have a few more spells up her sleeve but Avis’ forte was Quidditch. In fact, the only reason she agreed to this duel was because the hype from winning the Cup was quickly dying and Avis, frankly, was bored. She was a novice duelist at best, despite having a year advantage on the other girls and tended to let her emotions get the better of her but perhaps this time she could practice some calm collectiveness. She rolled her shoulders as Guinevere made a few opening remarks. Here goes nothing…

This time, Guinevere, the Slytherin girl, was moderating. Well, it seemed to be even funnier that way. The thing is that I was paired up with some Gryffindor girl, and I had never interacted with her before. My rival now was...
Fawkes. My roommate. Great.
I just waved my hand awkwardly at her. Please, don't hate me.
So many duels had me reconsidering all my life choices. Specifically, the one I made by signing up for the Ravenclaw duelling team. I mean, I was still on the waitlist, but what if I got accepted? This was going to be my life from now on?
Yes. And I'm looking forward to it. There was something in casting the spells and the vibes of the magic that just felt right. The adrenaline in your veins when you avoid a spell last second is something you can never compare.
So I lifted up my wand, ready to attack, taking a deep breath and focusing only in this moment.

Well, it was a good thing she at least evaded Fawkes's Curse of the Bogies. ---The rest of the duelists all chose different spells to attempt, and all were successful. Fawkes was not able to hit her target, but her casting was good. Laasya had darted out of the way in the nick of time, easily evading the spell, which instead shot towards one of the back walls. ---Aww, so close..." she commented. Inwardly, Guinevere was grateful, for she did not wish to be in charge of any students violently spewing snot and sickness around the piste. ---Both Mikaela and Avis found success in their spells. The former executed a classic flipendo to knock Fawkes a few steps back. Across the piste, Avis's tarantallegra caused Mikaela to abruptly dance a Spanish tango. Guinevere turned away to respectfully cough. ---"Alright, first round looks good! Let's get to the next, shall we?" |

However much to her annoyance, it missed. She stared at her wand and shook it a few times. What's wrong with you stupid thing!? She mumbled, still glaring.
She lookes up to see even though she had missed her spell, Avis had very much hit hers. Mikaela was now doing the spanish tango? Of all things- nevermind. The point was the spell had hit it's target. Before she could do anything else, she felt herself be forced a few steps back.
She coughed and looked around for a second before she realised. Ah. She had been hit with Flipendo. Wasn't the first time she had been hit with the spell but it was still painful nevertheless. She brushed it off and looked back to see who had hit the spell towards her.
The gryffindor was still. Except for dodging the spell Fawkes sent her way, she had done nothing else this round. So that meant the spell had been casted by Mikaela. Well Fawkes herself was the easier target so she couldn't fault her for targeting her over Avis but it still hurt. Both physically and mentally. She looked at her opponents with this twinkle in her eye. Now the duel was gonna really pick up. She aimed ready to cast.

Avis put her wand arm down and stared in amused interest at the precise movements being performed by her opponent after her Tarantellegra hit home. She had no idea what sort of dance was being displayed of course. Perhaps some sort of Latin ensemble? But it was entertaining to say the least. Avis stifled a chuckle.
Perhaps dueling could be as fun as Quidditch…
The Ravenclaw cast an empathetic glance at her teammate after her Flipendo missed narrowly. She watched as the girl stared daggers at her wand for a moment and Avis was distracted long enough to miss the spell shot directly towards Fawkes.
“Oi, watch-“ Avis started, but it was too late. She was already stumbling backwards after impact. The Ravenclaw winced.
“Sorry…” the girl apologized. She needed to be more vigilant. Avis could land one or two spells on her own but there was no way she’d win any duel by herself. Well, perhaps if the other team kept up their act of doing bare minimum. Hopefully the rest of the duel would be as breezy as the first round. After all, there was no way a Bludger hurt worse than a well placed spell.
With that in mind, the girl adjusted her stance, ready for the next rally of spells to cross the piste.

| --- | ---And then... the action petered out into a one-sided duel. Two sided, maybe, if you counted a certain Fawkes Chaos seemingly aiming at herself. The slightly bemused moderator supposed that she felt it would make up for the lack of energy, or rather participation from the opposing team, and decided not to question it except for a small furrow of her brows. "Careful there, you might need to check if you've held your wand backwards..." ---The next point of action that went down was Avis's second casting of the Dancing Feet Spell at Mikaela. The poor girl couldn't catch a break, switching to an Irish jig just as the tango wore off. Maybe it was the reason that no spells would come from her and Laasya's side of the piste this time. Dancing definitely took a lot of effort and breath out of a person. ---For now, at least, it seemed that there wasn't much to do, so Guinevere just shuffled around on her feet a bit, thinking about what she would do after the duel concluded. |

Cause what do you mean it's either missed her spells or in the current case, caused it to backfire? Yep. Her Flipendo had backfired. She felt herself be knocked back again and she look at her wand again. Just what vendetta did it have against her? The wand was supposed to choose the wizard. So why did it never work with her? Why did it always do this.
The one plus side she supposed was that neither of her opponents had made an effort to make a move. Both Mikaela and the Gryffindor girl remained still not bothering to even attempt to dodge any attacks she and Avis may have sent at them. Which certainly was bold. But definitely didn't work in their favour. Well why would it? Not doing anything certainly doesn't help one win a duel after all.
Unlike her, Avis had managed to hit her Tarantallegra right at Mikaela. Just as she stopped doing the spanish tango she began to do the Irish gig. It was honestly quite amusing to say the least tho. Tarantallegra was always an entertaining spell to watch in action. She looked back at her opponents again and raised her wand ready to attempt to hit them.

The wand situation for her partner unfortunately seemed to be getting worse, Avis thought as she watched Fawkes fly backwards in a blast of red light. The girl winced, but wasted no time in letting off yet another Dancing Feet Spell. The cast hit home once again and the Ravenclaw watched as the girl across from her promptly switched from whatever sort of dance she'd been vigorously performing previously, to a familiar Irish jig that her brother Will liked to break into every so often to annoy their Mam at home.
Avis would have been quite amused normally, but at the moment she was just flat out confused. Her opponent had made no move to dodge or cast a defensive spell. Instead, she seemed to have accepted that she'd be dancing for the rest of the duel, however long that might last. Avis suspected that if this kept up, it wouldn't go on for much longer.
As Fawkes picked herself back up from the backfire, Avis offered her an encouraging smile. "Next one will hit for sure!" she said in a friendly tone. That being said, the Ravenclaw turned back towards her vulnerable opponents with a quizzical expression. She wasn't going to complain about not having to dodge spells left and right but she had joined this duelling hoping for at least a bit of competition.
She glanced over at Guinevere and sighed. Even the moderator looked bored. Ah well, it was time to wrap this up in style then.
