Juah Koskela / first year / Slytherin

On 9th January 2014, a particularily cold winter morning in Finland, a boy was born to a pure-blood wizard named George, a rich half-german, half-english man who had spent most of his time in England, and a young finnish half-blood mother called Satu. When the two had married, they had agreed to move to Finland and settled down in a nice little cottage. There, Juah lived surrounded by nature and the loving finnish part of his family. His childhood was perfect and a dream of anyone, as he had a bunch of wizard friends his age growing up beside him because of how secluded their neighborhood was, without muggles except for his grandmother who had married a half-blood and had given birth to Satu.
A lake could be found near the house as well as a huge forest in which the children used to play. During winters, they would grab their sleighs and enjoy the snowy and cold weather by building snowmen and throwing snowballs. The summers were spent on swimming in the lakes, discovering said forest and playing tricks on the neighborhood. Overall, there was always something to do, to laugh about, and it was extremely peaceful and safe from being discovered as wizards due to the secludedness.
This was his life until he turned six. Suddenly, his father began to panic about his boy's first instance of magic taking place soon. As he had went to Hogwarts himself, he had always pushed Satu to move with him back to England because he wanted Juah to visit Hogwarts as well but he never managed to convince his wife to go along with it earlier. They shared different opinions regarding the topic. Satu adored Finland with her entire heart and Juah had a great life there. Plus, the woman had far too many responsibilities and family there to just leave it behind. This caused a dispute between the family and made George move back to England with Juah on his own after explaining the situation to him. Juah was anything but happy to lose his friends but reluctantly gave in when he saw how important this was to his father.
When they arrived in England, George showed Juah around in the mansion he owned. It was not anywhere near what Juah was used to from his cottage in Finland and he felt deeply uncomfortable living there. Eventually, George gave in and was willing to move to Ledbury and buy a small yet cozy old house on the countryside to satisfy and calm his son, who, after all, had also compromised for his father, so it was only fair to meet halfway. The family stayed in contact through owls and Satu would visit them regularily and as often as she could.
His father had to take Juah back to the mansion sometimes in order to have meetings there with old friends and contacts from the wizard world. George was too vain to invite anyone to to their small house in Ledbury and insisted on keeping up the appearances and air of importance and affluency. Since he could not simply leave Juah home alone, he dragged him along, where he spent the days in the massive library of the mansion or attending the meetings with boredom, clothed in expensive suits. He learnt to cherish arts and literature as distraction but was acquainted with the adult way of life every now and then before returning to Ledbury. While a part of his mind was fond of the luxurious lifestyle and he grew less and less disgusted by money he hadn't had any use for, his heart was still somewhere stuck in the seasons, forests, nature and calm of Finland, leaving him with a yearning for his home country and mother whenever he was in the mansion, or even at Ledbury, where he spent most of his time.
After his First Instance of Magic, George saw no reason to keep his son tied to England, so Juah would move constantly between Finland and England to spend time with both his parents equally and connect with both cultures that had become part of his identity. Since his mother speaks Finnish fluently and English only with a very grave accent, Juah learned both English and Finnish very well.

His FIOM occured in England, shortly after he had turned eight. It happened during an overheard argument between his parents when his mother came to visit them, during which Juah was awfully scared that his parents might divorce over a simple topic as how much longer Satu could stay before having to return home to Finland again. This was a silly thought because the two really love each other even when not always the same opinion, but it spooked him enough to burst a lightbulb in the room they were talking in. The parents were surprised and turned around, finding Juah in the entrance looking at them with big eyes. George figured out that this must have been Juah's first instance of magic and was excited about it before they both comforted their son and assured him that everything was all right.

Juah has the tpical finnish hair and skin. He's blonde and gets sunburnt quickly. His hair falls in soft layers and has a cool undertone. In the middle of his face there's his nose that is small and round. He blushes easily and cannot handle heat well. Something that doesn't really allign with his finnish roots is the fact that his eyes are almond shaped but of a brown colour, and not a particularily light one either. The trait comes from his British family. He's a lean 12 year old and around 154cm tall.

The boy generally believes that a person's first impression relies heavily on the way they present themselves. He likes to pay a lot of attention to his clothes and sense of fashion, making sure the colours match each other and that there are enough accessories. His favourite colour is dark red, so he usually wears at least one item of clothing in that colour or his clean dark red converse.

THE PHILOSOPHER IN HIM

For a twelve year old, Juah is surprisingly educated and sophististicated due to his father. He values knowledge and the history of art, poetry, old records, pottery, fashion, literature and philosophy. Late nights spend under the stars talking about insecurities, problems and what the world could be like if humans weren't so stupid, wondering if aliens exist and discussing whether chocolate or vanilla is the better ice-cream flavour are the definition of a friendship with the finnish boy.

THE CHARMER IN HIM

He's very adapt in social situations and good with people but not overly extroverted, more of an ambivert. When it suits him, hell start conversations and kepps them going, but he doesn't necessarily feel the need for breaking every silence and spending every second of his life around others. Polite gestures, a smile that doesn't reach the eyes, never hostile or shouting. A certain calmness and gentleness surrounds him that also hugs the people interacting with him. According to him, people don't get far with pointless choleric point of views. He's open for friendships and conversations and offers help immediately when asked. Overall, people come to him easily. His observant nature might add to that, but he's not awkward either and has a good sense of humor that consists of irony and notices what people like and dislike.

THE FINNISH IN HIM

Juah identifies himself mostly as finnish. Since he was born there and prefers the language and culture over the British one, he struggles a lot with his current residence in Ledbury. When he moved, he felt out of place and started to define his personality as finnish. If someone were to ask the boy when he was still younger and shortly after they had moved about his character traits, he would've confidently responded with: 'I'm finnish.'

Finnish people are often described as more reserved, indredibly direct and honest, respectful of boundaries, loyal, reliable and steadfast. While Juah most certainly can carry social interactions when he has to, he comes across as disciplined, in control of his feelings and not overly emotional when you first meet him. He sort of plays into the stereotypes of loyalty and reliability, because as a friend, people have him by their side for life. Only a really dumb mistake can make someone ruin their chances with him, but he doesn't hold grudges, so it's easy to make ammends if the person is truly sorry and wants to change. If not, Juah knows his own worth and moves on. He holds a lot of appreciation for mother nature, is grateful for what he has and not greedy, forgiving and modest. Just because his father is rich and well-known, it doesn't mean that he should carry that pride as well. He doesn't believe in inherited fame but rather in merit and equality of all. There's no better or worse blood-status, family name or personality, the only thing that counts is the goals a person is trying to achieve and that they're trying their best to make the most of their time.

THE SLYTHERIN IN HIM

Of course there's reasons for Juah ending up, out of all houses, in Slytherin. For once, he's incredibly ambitious and works hard to achieve what he wants. He's quick to adapt to new situations and people, reading them like an open book to maximize the potential of a successful interaction. His awful honesty can make him rude from time to time, and he works well with what he has at hand and isn't picky. A lot of thoughts are put into each of his words and how he says what he wants to, and he strictly follows the code: 'think before you act'. While he understands people who don't, rushing into situations has never promised lots of gain and usually just brings more trouble, while careful planning can prevent things from going wrong. Once he's made up his mind on something, it's difficult to stop him from going through with it. His personal ideology is also very steady but he's open to listen to other's thoughts respectfully. He values academic success but also wants to make his father proud of him.

THE DISTANCE IN HIM

Due to his childhood, Juah has one major problem. While he knows what he's fighting for and what he values above all else, he feels like he has to have one steady point in life. This can make him incredibly narrow-minded in points of changing his opinion. He's also careful of calling people his friend and likes to keep a proper distance at first, at least emotionally. Not because he's cold, but he's still reminded of his friends in Finland that he's mostly lost contact with as he changed residence. Only when he visited Finland he saw them again, but it obviously wasn't the same familiar friendship any longer while they had all grown closer without him. He almost felt like a bit of a stranger, and even if he managed to rebuild the connection, he had to return to Ledbury eventually each time, causing the cycle of hurt and loss of contact to repeat like a vicious circle. He feels stuck with distance and craves to build deep and meaningful friendships he's too scared to lose. Plus, he tries to avoid fights with people because a part of him still believes that his mother and father are unhappy and that their love will eventually cave in to their disagreements. Especially with his parents, he's cautious to state his own opinion to not drive a dwell between them and to not seem like he loves one of them more. In friendships, this people pleasing tendency doesn't manifest, rather the opposite. There, he says everything he doesn't dare to at home and likes to see harsh truths as a test for loyalty and how steadfast the bond actually is.
