Apollo's name is cognate with the Greek verb apollesthai. By crying out "Apollon emos", Cassandra can designate the god as "my Apollo" and "my destroyer" at the same time in the same words. (your throat is raw from screaming to a god who isn't listening)
They say patience is a virtue. But what if there is no destination in sight that one can wait for?

They say curiosity kills the cat. But what if it is the only way the cat will stay alive?

They say blessings come in disguise. But the blessing did not come, and so it is the sunchild who is disguised, seeking the blessing herself.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Lyanna Oak did not want cake.

She only wanted her mother back.

And maybe, if the fates allowed it, sleep.

Not just a good night once in a blue moon. Real, uninterrupted sleep.

Was that asking too much?

The sunchild tossed and turned in her bed, eyes scrunched against her pillow as she tried to wish away the miserable thoughts that plagued her mind. If the world stopped spinning, she would still be left with these very same daunting prospects and insomnia. One might deem it strange, that grief disappeared as slowly as a leaf falling from a tree, oh so high up. The taller the tree, the more hurt can be inflicted on it and the longer it takes for the leaf to hit the ground. A seedling, however, may not yet have leaves at all, having no slack and simply perishing from the initial blow.

Lyanna was strong, but she had a fatal flaw that would always leave scars. In many ways, this attribute could be used for good, to feel compassion and ever so much joy, and to help people whenever given the chance to. But when in pain, when others were in pain, the entire world seemed to melt before her eyes, glass shattering all around her in a room of mirrors, the pillars to her happiness crumbling to the ground

The trait in question is the ability to feel, truly and oh so much more profoundly than most.

It was both a blessing and a curse.

An eye for an eye.

But an eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind.

Will this be her fate? Or will the sunchild break loose from these chains?

Only a few months ago had a certain @Archer Duncan disclosed a priceless solution to the lack of dreams throughout the night, eyes remaining wide-open, starlight reflecting off the tears trickling down her moon-touched cheeks. Children are told by their parents that if you lay in bed long enough, you will eventually fall asleep. For many young souls that may prove to be true, but Lyanna was not one of them. Maybe after hours she would manage to doze off into a nightmare, but tell me, oh muse, is that truly better than staying awake?

This ingenious solution proved no simpler than sneaking a few ingredients on the way out of the dungeons, a potion awaiting to be brewed in a certain sunchild’s cauldron. It had started small, a drink here and there when the night became too unbearable– but the effects were so potent, it was difficult to keep her hands away from the vials she had stored the first brew in, now that it had been made. After all, the intentions were good, and oh how easy it was to convince herself to take just one more dose at 2am on yet another sleepless night.

The potion was labeled Dreamless Sleep.

If one does not dream, what happens to them? Is that what death feels like, painless but hollow; void of both joy and sorrow; tears from neither hurt nor happiness; no past to hide from, no future to look forward to?

If one does not dream, how do they feel the scorching heat of the sun, the bitter cold on a mid-winter day, the emotion of writing a paragraph for a character that does not even truly exist outside of their heart of hearts and the wiping of tears along with it?

If one does not dream, one cannot live, truly.

But to live, one must begin with survival. And despite the numbness in her soul, Lyanna Oak could continue to survive with such desolation and anguish buried so deeply in her soul.

It all started with a will as strong as steel, a mind that when set would not turn back. Departing her dormitory without a sound, the carpeted floor beneath her muffling her footsteps, the sunchild entered curfewed territory. Now away from the safe haven of her warm bed, there were only two goals clouding the front of her mind.

Steal the ingredients.
Don’t get caught.

Lyanna did not fear the darkness that enveloped her; walking through the corridors at night was not a new experience for the young teenager. On most occasions, however, it was the front doors that greeted her at such a late hour, her lungs taking in the fresh air, a way to finally breathe once more. This was different. Deeper and deeper into the depths of the underground chambers of the castle did she go, until the potions classroom was in sight.

Entering, the storeroom itself was naturally latched, but Lyanna was prepared for such, having brought with her a specially crafted artifact known as a Locksmith’s Knife. The lock clicked as the door swung open, scents of many different origins wafted into her nostrils, slightly dizzying as she took it all in. The vast collection of powders and aromas looked different without the candles dispersing light throughout the room, almost as if ready to be brewed by moonlight.

Quickly reading the tags and searching for the ingredients she needed, the sunchild could only hope professor Arasmalaya was a heavy sleeper.

It may not have been wise to break curfew, but Lyanna did not question her decision, as she carefully added the ingredients to specially designed pockets on the inside of her trenchcoat.

All’s well that ends well.

But what the sunchild hadn’t expected, was the soul destined to enter the stage next.

𝕴t’s funny what ideas the desperate, idle mind can conjure to pull itself out of jeopardy. They say fantasies of self-destruction are an ironic survival protocol; the brain searching for an easy way out of the pain. Valour was a logician well-versed in lateral thinking and shooting herself in the foot. It was only natural she came to this conclusion sooner or later.

See, calming draughts had started to lose their analgesic efficacy on the girl, given how much she’d used them over the past weeks to ease her nightmarish hallucinations that had bled into the daytime now too. She started to turn to more extreme alternatives. Of course, there was the Potion of Dreamless Sleep, though this would not aid with these puppets of fiction that lingered in the corners of her vision while she was awake. They needed something more potent than that. Perhaps a factory reset of sorts. Valour scoured the library into the small hours of the morning, flipping through reams of papers on unconventional uses of dangerous potions. She’d read of talented researchers in magical maladies delving into dreams for days at a time, battling them from the inside out. Finding the wound from within before waking to heal it. A Draught of Living Death, followed by the Wiggenweld Potion. If monitored well, it might fix her sleep deprivation in one fell swoop – then she could take the Potion of Dreamless Sleep for nights to come, maintaining her sanity a little longer. Dr Ubbly’s Oblivious Unction would be the next step to deal with those pesky residual visions and then hopefully, Valour finally have some answers to what was haunting her so doggedly in the recesses of her subconscious.

Of course, these potions were heavily guarded due to their lethal potential, as were its ingredients, many of which were saved only for the most senior students of the school. Ever filled with egotistical confidence, Valour figured the potion could not be so beyond her own academic talents. It would simply take quite the expedition to the Dungeons to retrieve all that she needed to brew them herself. Glancing at her clock she noted the time as she scrawled her ‘shopping list’ of exotic ingredients; it was the witching hour. She must look dreadful at this point, hair strewn wildly with a faraway look in her foggy eyes to match. This all had to end, and soon – one way or another. A guilty worm of a thought whispered. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if I didn’t wake up. Tell no one of my plans and not even bother with the Wiggenweld Potion. It would be as simple as—

With a sharp strike, she slapped herself clean across the cheek. A dark, angry patch of red formed on her cheek as Valour composed herself. She was many things, a paradoxical girl of cursed birth and tenacious ambition. Indomitable and undaunting, death would not be the first she surrendered to. Besides, she enjoyed her dalliances with the creature much more than letting it win so easily. First, she’d worry about brewing the damn potion before her imagination dug its claws into the possible aftermath.

Armed with her wand and her never-ending satchel, Valour crept from her dormitory just down the hallway from the Potions Classroom. They lurked in the shadows, slithering away from the light that might expose them. They prepared themself to cast Alohomora on the door, but were startled to find the door innocently ajar. It could have been a draft, or an inattentive professor failing to lock up for the night. Val knew better than to lower her guard; it could easily be a prefect on patrol. A delightful thought – a fellow thief. They rose their wand, ready to vanish if need be.

Approaching the iron-clad door, Valour hesitated at the sound of glass bottles clinking softly, hurried and sporadic like half-remembered music. The intruder’s movements were hasty, short puffs of breath implying panic as they filled their pockets. Their darkened lips gave a twitch. How fun. Terrible ideas brewed before the girl’s non-existent better judgement could intervene. She cleared her throat with a definitive footstep, breaking the silence between them.

Immobulus.Wand stabbing the air at her company, the shrouded thief stood frozen in place. Hand half reaching for another vial while her chin tilted slightly towards the door, eyes widened with fear. She made a beautiful specimen, Valour thought as she entered the classroom and circled her. A girl this beautiful should be admired – especially when she was audacious enough to steal from right under Professor Arasmalaya's nose. The witch grinned as her gaze fell on the soft parting of the girl’s lips and their rosy hue, silently gasping at their trespass. Her honey-brown locks fell over her face and Val dared to reach up and tuck the tendrils behind her ear before peering into her bag. Ingredients for… she knew this combination, memorised from scanning pages upon it mere hours before. A fellow revenant of the night. Unfamiliar and presumably older than Valour, she might come in handy.

Finite Incantatem. Valour drawled the spell with a lazy flick of her wand, cat-eyes watching as the girl stuttered to life. Terribly sorry about that. Dreamless Sleep, huh? Either you’re just having a bad week… She wet her lips with an imperceptible smile, Or you’re about to become very useful to me. Turning to the cabinet full of possibilities, they kissed their teeth in thought before dropping an extra vial into her partner’s bag and placing one from her bag back onto the shelf. One problem – you’re not thinking big enough. If we’re going to risk expulsion, let’s at least do it right.
