Jay had found the diary later that afternoon, she had been in the library using her free session to study her spells for her charms homework when she had found it. A leatherbound diary with neat handwriting and Jay felt the need to return it.

I have been wondering around this castle for the last three hours. Where the fuck is this Stelle person?

Jay entered an unused classroom and was annoyed when she found it empty of any people. With a sigh, Jay sat on one of the tables and surveyed her surroundings. The classroom was dusty and had the evening light shining through the windows, casting everything in a warm golden glow. If Jay looked close enough she could see the dust rising and falling when they hit the patches of light.

I have to admit it's quite beautiful and peaceful here...

Jay absentmindedly changed the color of her hair to try and match the light amber of the sunlight, she often did that when she was at peace, change her appearance to match her surroundings. After about twenty minutes her hair was now a similar hue to the sunshine and was curly and frizzy, her skin was less pale and she had freckles scattered around her arms and face like stars, gifts from the sun herself. Jay snapped back to reality and noticed she still had to look for Stelle and give her the diary back.

She debated opening the diary and finding out more, maybe Jay could find a schedule in there and that could help her find this Stelle. Jay eventually came to a conclusion and opened the diary to a random page. She had to admit that this person had neat handwriting, it was really pretty too. Jay started reading the diary, there were many things in here but one thing that did catch her eye was one of the more older entries from about a month ago.

The entry was mainly about Stelle wanting to do a sort of makeover after a vacation with her grandmother where she had thought long and hard about how she wanted to change her hair, maybe straighten it, color a few streaks. Jay was interested, to say the least. As a Metamorphmagus she could change her appearance at will so she didn't have a problem with being able to make her hair purple and curly from blonde and straight but she had grown up in the muggle world as a very... bright person.

Learning to dye and style hair was essential for Jay, she had done her mum's hair and her best friends hair as well as her own, she dyed and bleached it a few times until she had settled on the pink and brown that she was planning on changing up soon, she wanted to bleach it all, doing that was like a blank slate for her, it represented a blank page, a new start for Jay.

She flicked a strand of her hair back and forth, she was gonna cut it too, maybe a bit messy here and there... Jay blew a strand out of her face and looked back down at the diary with a groan, she still had to find Stelle. Preparing her legs to scale the whole castle again she hopped off the desk.

Sitting by one of the high windows, her legs tucked into her skirt and an open book on her lap, she watched absently as the afternoon light spilled onto the stone floor. The late autumn sun had a particularly melancholic quality. It wasn't the bright, carefree light of summer, but something gentler, like a polite farewell before leaving. She had spent the last half hour trying to read the same paragraph. Her attention had been wandering down paths far more interesting than any academic text. She was thinking about her diary. Since returning from vacation, she hadn't seen it. Had she left it at her grandparents' house? If so, she had to pray her grandmother didn't find it; she didn't want to get a Howler at breakfast. She'd die of embarrassment before going through that. That was a perfectly reasonable thought. At least for her. She continued searching every corner of her mind. She couldn't have forgotten it; she clearly remembered putting it at the bottom of her bag. But had she taken it out? She could be in their common room, but she'd already looked there several times.

That's when she heard a noise. A brief sound. The scraping of shoes against the floor. Stelle looked up. For a moment, she thought the room was playing one of its usual tricks on her. The figure that had just appeared seemed to have been painted by the same golden light that flooded the classroom. The hair, illuminated by the sun, had exactly the shade of dry leaves as they begin to turn to gold. She didn't remember ever having seen that student before. And yet there was something striking about her. Not necessarily her appearance, although that too. It was more the way she seemed to observe the world, as if she were constantly searching for something. So, driven by that nagging curiosity that always stirred within her whenever she saw something unusual, she climbed down from the window to follow her.

The girl seemed ready to leave when their eyes finally met. Stelle smiled immediately. It was a habit she'd inherited from her mother and grandmother: to smile before asking questions. Smile before passing judgment, because the world already contained enough stern expressions.

"Oh," she said softly, resting the book she was carrying on her chest. "I think I found you before you found me." She observed her with genuine curiosity. Stelle's eyes widened slightly at the sight of her diary in the girl's arms. Not from concern, but rather from surprise. For a few seconds, she gazed at the notebook like someone reunited with an old, stray pet that had decided to embark on an adventure of its own.

"So there you were," she murmured, addressing the diary before the student. Then she let out a small laugh. "I've been looking for it since yesterday." And it was true. She had checked half the common room, two classrooms, and a ridiculous number of places where she could never have left it. She had even considered the possibility that the castle had kept it, and Hogwarts had a history of that. She turned her attention back to the girl. She didn't seem like a dangerous person. In fact, she looked slightly exhausted. Like someone who had walked countless corridors. Like someone who had completed an unexpectedly complicated mission. Gratitude immediately spread across Stelle's face.

"Thank you for finding it," she said with genuine warmth. "Well... I think it's mine. Can I read the first page?" She tilted her head slightly. The golden light continued to stream through the windows, enveloping the room in that suspended tranquility that existed for only a few minutes each afternoon. And, for the first time all day, Stelle felt she had stopped thinking about a thousand different things at once. Now she only wanted to know who that girl was, why she had spent so much time looking for her, and what stories were hidden in those eyes that seemed accustomed to changing as much as the color of the sky.

”I think I found you before you found me” A curious voice came from the window behind her and Jay immediately stopped her transformation leaving half her freckles behind.

The girl in front of her was quite beautiful, she looked celestial compared to Jay’s warm tones, her striking blue eyes stared from the window as she looked at the old diary in Jay’s hand. She looked at it affectionately, like someone who had been reunited with a good friend after years apart.

She didn’t seem upset or concerned that Jay was holding her book and had just read one of the pages, instead she looked slightly surprised and relieved that it was safe.

“Thank you for finding it” she smiled with kindness that reached her eyes, not many people did that when they saw Jay. “Well I think it’s mine. Can I read the first page?”

Jay paused, unsure of what to do first. She had no doubt that this was the Stelle Mims she had been ditched classes to look for all day. “You’re Stelle right? Stelle Mims?” she asked before handing the notebook over to her.

For some reason, now that Jay had found Stelle she quite missed looking for her. She had found quite a few places that were quite unique and unusual while scouring the castle. Jay felt as though her job wasn’t done just yet.

While she was thinking her appearance changed again, not even back to its normal form. Her hair blackened and straightened and her freckles sunk into her now pale skin while her eyes mimicked the blue of Stelle’s. Jay hated when that happened, whenever she accidentally copied someone’s appearance and couldn’t find the will to change it.

“You’re quite a hard person to find” Jay smirked “I thought the castle might have taken you or something” Jay stared at Stelle’s hair, it was quite curly and blonde.

Easy to dye, not so easy to straighten…

Jay shook her head slightly to dismiss the thoughts, she really liked altering hair, it was one of her passions. When she graduated she didn’t want to go into the ministry or anything to do with magic, she wanted to open a tattoo and hairdressing studio. That had been her dream ever since she was six and had dyed her hair for the first time.

Jay tilted her head slightly to look at the diary a bit closer, Stelle was clutching it like she had found an old friend. Jay was tempted to ask her about her hair and what she wanted to do with it but decided to do so later, Stelle might not react too well hearing that Jay had read the diary without permission.

Stelle remained motionless for a moment, as if time itself had gently folded back on itself to grant her a brief respite. Her fingers rested around the diary with an almost reverential delicacy, caressing the worn leather cover as the familiar weight of the notebook settled once more in her hands. It was curious how much one could miss such a small object. It wasn't simply bound paper; entire afternoons lived within its pages, thoughts written with the haste of someone afraid of forgetting an emotion before nightfall, small discoveries that seemed unimportant until time transformed them into memories. She let out a barely perceptible sigh, one of those born more of relief than weariness.

"Yes... it's mine." Her smile appeared slowly, warm and sincere, as she looked up at the girl. Gently, she opened the first page. Her name was written in that neat, round handwriting that had always amused her, because it contrasted so sharply with the chaos of thoughts hidden on the following pages. She closed the journal again and hugged it to her chest for barely a second, like someone greeting an old friend after a long separation. When Jay said her full name, Stelle inclined her head slightly.

"It's a pleasure, and... thank you for returning it." She extended her hand casually. Only then did she truly notice her. Not her uniform, nor the way she carried herself, but something much more subtle. Her appearance was changing. Not in a theatrical or flamboyant way, but as if the colors had decided to slowly slide across a still-damp canvas. For a moment, she thought the light of the setting sun was playing tricks on her. Then she realized it wasn't. Those eyes were remarkably like her own. She didn't feel fear, no, she felt a prickle charged with immense curiosity. Her eyes widened slightly as she contemplated the phenomenon with the same interest a child shows when watching the first snowfall of winter.

"Did you... do that?" The question slipped out before she could stop it. There was no accusation in her voice, only fascination.

"It's incredible..." She took just a step closer, careful not to invade Jay's personal space. The word came out slowly, almost savoring it. When Jay commented that it had been difficult to find her, Stelle let out an embarrassed giggle.

"I'm sorry..." She ran a hand through her hair and looked around the empty classroom. Golden light still streamed through the windows, turning the dust motes into tiny constellations suspended in the air. Everything seemed enveloped in that tranquility that only existed in rooms forgotten by the rest of the castle.

"You said you've been looking for me all afternoon. You searched the entire castle just to return this?" Her eyebrows arched in genuine surprise, because there was something profoundly kind about that gesture. She could have left it in lost and found or simply ignored it. But she had chosen to look for a stranger. That said a lot about a person. She remained silent for a few seconds before smiling again.

"It cracks me up to imagine you asking all over the castle, 'Where's this Stelle?'" Her gaze then drifted, almost involuntarily, down to Jay's dark hair. She fleetingly recalled that diary entry. The highlights, the dye, the straightening. It had been a fleeting thought during the holidays after an argument with her grandmother. Nothing serious, really, just a minor squabble over a mispronounced word in Russian—or had it been in Veela? She couldn't even remember. But she had been upset, quite upset, more emotional than usual, and to vent her frustration, she'd written down that she wanted to dye and straighten her hair (to look less like her grandmother). A tiny pang of embarrassment shot through her chest, and her cheeks flushed immediately. Had she read that? She didn't want to be left wondering, even though it might be an awkward question. Stelle smiled serenely before speaking again.

"Did you... by any chance read anything?" She said it so naturally it almost seemed like she was responding to a thought that had never been voiced. She glanced down at the journal and absentmindedly stroked the corner of the cover.

"I suppose we've all been curious at some point. I don't know if I could control my curiosity if I were you." She looked up again, and a small laugh lit up her face once more. Her eyes lingered again, filled with genuine curiosity, on Jay's ever-changing hair.

"What's it like being able to change your appearance whenever you want?"

"It's a pleasure, and... thank you for returning it." Stelle said as she put out her hand to shake Jays until she noticed Jay’s appearance was changing from the sunset painting to a dark demonic being, her eyes mimicking Stelle’s, Jay considered trying to change her eyes back but decided Stelle had already seen them so what was the point?

“Did you… do that?” Stelle asked in a fascinated tone and Jay immediately stiffened, ready for her to ask a million questions but she didn’t, instead she just moved a bit closer, seemingly to get a better look at Jay and her transformations, at least Stelle hadn’t lept at her and poked her in the face fifty times.

“It’s incredible…” Stelle trailed off, almost as if she was trying to keep the words going, almost as if she was savouring them. Jay was about to take a step back but Stelle moved first, she stepped back into the golden sunlight and giggled softly, almost embarrassed

"I'm sorry..." she said, running a hand through her hair, pausing for a second before speaking again "You said you've been looking for me all afternoon. You searched the entire castle just to return this?" She asked curiously.

Jay nodded, looking at the floor, her dark hair contrasting with the sunlight sharply as it moved in a wave down her back with her head movement, “yeah, yeah I did” she mumbled quietly, more to herself than Stelle.

"It cracks me up to imagine you asking all over the castle, 'Where's this Stelle?'" Jay looked up, her eyes widened. That was kinda true. She had been looking for Stelle all over the castle, annoyed? Yes but had been happy to find lots of different nooks and crannies in the castle that would be fun to explore later on. Jay tiles her head slightly upwards, thinking about the spots she had found and how many doors she found unlocked and had opened them to find hidden little alcoves away from the real world. An escape. That’s how she viewed them at least.

"Did you... by any chance read anything?" Stelle asked, shocking Jay out of her daze and looking away in embarrassment, it was her turn to be embarrassed “yeah maybe…” Jay mumblesd sheepishly, she had just opened it for clues but had gotten a bit distracted by what was written in there. At least she hadn't read anything too personal but Jay could never assume what was personal to someone and what wasn't

It was mainly to find clues but I got a bit distracted...

"I suppose we've all been curious at some point. I don't know if I could control my curiosity if I were you." Jay looked up in surprise, Stelle wasn't mad at her? Wow. "What's it like being able to change your appearance whenever you want?" Stelle asked with genuine curiosity.

"Ah..." Jay always got that question sooner or later, and she always gave the same answer.

"I hate it, my emotions and thoughts are on display for everyone to see and I can't control it well, yeah it's cool being able to change my appearance whenever I want but it comes with a price" she sighed, sitting on one of the desks. "It's like a curse" she whispered softly as she stared out the window.

"Anyways," Jay broke from her trance quite suddenly "I did read a bit of your diary in hopes I could find a schedule or something" she trailed off "I found something about you wanting to straighten your hair or even dye a bit of it"

Shelistened without interrupting, and for a few seconds she wasn't quite sure what to make of the information. She wasn't angry. At least, not really. The initial embarrassment at having lost the diary had long since transformed into something much closer to resignation, especially after discovering that Jay hadn't read it out of sheer gossip. However, when she mentioned the hair, her eyebrows raised slightly.

"You read that too?" There was no reproach in her voice, though there was a hint of surprise. Stelle glanced down at her own hair, as if she had just remembered that it had been there all her life and that, apparently, it had just become a topic of conversation. She ran a hand through one of her blonde curls, absentmindedly twirling it around a finger.

"Well... yes. I've thought about it." A pause. "More than once." Stelle let out a small laugh, though she soon looked back at Jay. The girl's confession about her Metamorphmagus was still swirling in her head. A curse. It was too heavy a word for something that, from the outside, seemed almost wonderful. Being able to change her appearance at will sounded like one of those abilities Stelle would have loved to have for a whole week, just to experiment with different hairstyles, colors, and styles. But now she understood that there was something much less beautiful behind it.

"Although it's a silly thought, I... I had a fight with my grandmother" she finally remarked. Stelle made a small, thoughtful grimace. She didn't want to elaborate. Because she didn't like to speak ill of her family, perhaps it was simply a reflex, a small fear that there was even the slightest chance her grandmother might hear her comments and get upset. Then she returned to the subject of her hair.

"I want to straighten it sometime. Just to see how I'd look. And maybe dye some parts." Her fingers played with one of her curls again. The idea seemed to excite her more than she expected.

"Although my mother and grandmother would probably say I'm wasting perfectly beautiful hair, that I've completely lost my mind." Stelle rolled her eyes with an affectionate smile. Then she looked back at Jay, now with genuine curiosity.

"But if you can change your appearance... what else can you change besides your hair?" she asked. "Because if that's the case, I need you to explain how it works, and I promise not to write it in my diary."
