On this particular one, Guinevere's agenda consisted of wandering around campus and around Hogsmeade - haunting, if you will - and generally doing whatever came to mind. ---She had already made some number of rounds to the various shops, buying something from Three Broomsticks ("One medium butterbeer, to go, please!") and generally making the shopkeepers busy with her window-shopping. She then had returned to the castle, still sipping as she was a slow drinker, and wandered the halls aimlessly. She reached the fourth floor, and heard more commotion than usual in the Dueling Club. Deciding on a whim to enter and spectate the various practice matches, she pushed open the heavy doors to reveal a shower of spells arcing across the pistes. ---She decided that this would be a good way to pass the time for now, and took a seat in the middle of the spectator area, scanning the room for potential observation subjects. Her gaze landed on a Gryffindor, Lily, who was a year younger than her, and a Slytherin, Amethyst, whom Guinevere had duelled with before. They seemed to be just starting, so she sat back to watch the duel commence. |

Amethyst shook her head.
How did she manage to get into a duel, and that too with someone older?
Was she looking to get herself a permanent place in the hospital wing?
The Gryffindor who had introduced herself as Lily was now standing in front of her, discussing ways they could moderate the duel.
Lily practised a few spells, and Amethyst couldn't deny that her hand was neat.
There was no need for this.
It was so foolish, so foolish of her. Lily had not even particularly asked her. She had brought it upon herself, for Hecate knows what reason.
The mess in her brain was poorly reflected on her face. She wished she could be more honest about how scared she was.
Perhaps it was time to take it as a lesson and not interfere in other people's business.
Amethyst knew what to do. She had to back out.
The younger girl was about to call out for Lily when the heavy doors creaked open.
Guinevere.
Another older girl she had duelled before.
Just when she was about to get out.
The fate had decided her course.
She watched as Guinevere strolled to the spectator area.
The only way to get out of this duel now was to duel.
Amethyst heaved a long sigh of distress.

Lily was still unsure how on earth she was dueling with a second year. It still didn't make sense. I mean sure she had dueled with younger people during official duels but never unofficial. The last unofficial duel she had had was with Argahlon Vexius, that jerk. He had righteously made her angry, especially when he kept calling her a 'mudblood'. She'd like him to see her now, how good she was at duelling compared to then. He'd have no chance at all. Just as she was getting ready to turn to Amethyst and ask if they wanted to ask a random person in here to moderate, the doors opened and Guinevere Russetwood walked in. She had seen Guinevere before but never interacted with her. Though to be honest, Lily's interactions as of late were sorely lacking. She just hadn't felt like meeting new people outside of her small friend circle. She had been hanging around her old friends a lot lately but just couldn't get up the energy to meet anyone new. Not now. Maybe next year, but she had a feeling that she'd be very busy next year She turned to Amethyst. "Are you ready?" She asked, getting into the proper position for duelling.

| --- | ---The duel started with considerable action going on. Lily had chosen a spell on the more aggressive side, petrificus totalus. Personally, she was not the biggest fan, as the sheer impact of a sudden fall was never pleasant. Impedimenta would probably be her choice to hinder the target; she remembered learning the spell and had been keen to practice it. Anywho- the Gryffindor's spell struck true, putting Amethyst into an unfortunate position. This, however, was not before Amethyst had in turn had put out an almost textbook Tickling Charm, paired with an almost flawless aim, which Lily found herself the victim of. The silver-tinted spell brought on a bout of uncontrollable laughter. It was always a pure joy to see fellow students having such fun whilst practicing their craft, Guinevere thought to herself. ---Amethyst was now on the floor immobilized, and Lily was not too much better, as she was doubled over and laughing non-stop. The only physical damage the younger of the two had taken was from the fall from a standing position, so Guinevere could not see any clear statistical advantage between the two... the main thing was that Amethyst couldn't really move for now. ---Nonetheless, it was only the first round, and things were already ramping up. In many duels, the first couple of rounds were for finding one's footing and undergoing some trial and error, so this was a good change. |

The minute Amethyst and her had squared up, Lily thought of her spell being Petrificus Totalus. To Lily's immense pleasure it struck true, but she was unable to enjoy the fall as Amethyst had managed to cast a perfect Tickling Charm on Lily. She immediately doubled over giggling. It felt like a hundred feathers assaulting her stomach and sides. She actually couldn't breathe. Okay, that was exaggerating. She could breathe but barely. Lily tried to straighten up but again the tickling made her want to double over or die from too much tickling. Even her thoughts were scattered. Lily tried to think of spells she could cast on Amethyst as she was assaulted quite literally by this damn spell. Thinking of the perfect one, Lily raised her wand and cast it through tightly grounded teeth. Once that was done, Lily sunk to her knees, because if she didn't she would have fallen over by the sheer amount of tickling going on. The Ministry if Magic should have classified this spell as a curse. It definitely causes harm to the other person. The spell was going away slowly, but it was going away. Lily could now stand and her giggles weren't as bad. This duel was already interesting.

Amethyst giggled.
Giggled seeing a tickling charm working perfectly on her opponent.
It was all funny till she was paralysed.
She had never seen this coming.
A yelp escaped her lips as gravity pulled her towards the floor.
Petrificus Totalus.
She had no idea how to cast it.
She was duelling a fourth year after all.
Couldn't say she did not see that one coming.
But it still hurt. Amethyst doubled up in pain. But she found herself unable to move.
She lay there like a gingerbread man. And suddenly she wished for Christmas and snow; she could lie down in snow like that and make a snow angel, except she was immobilised.
All the energy left in her was being used to hate summers.
Maybe she could break free and make a snow angel, but the floor wasn't as cold as she wanted, and it was definitely not soft like snow.
That is when she realised she was still in a duel. She needed to use this time thinking of her next action, her next spell.
Should she play defence?
Unlikely; that was like cowering away from the duel.
Now that she was in it, she would take it to the end.

| --- | ---Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. After the fireworks of the previous round, it seemed fit (albeit the fact that it was the only option) to ramp down on the action. Lily cast up an imposing gray storm cloud on Amethyst's side of the piste, which would usually have more than one duelist upon it. Guinevere found that one on one duels were just a tiny bit easier, as you had more space to dodge and didn't have to take into account bumping into your partner. Though, it was nice to have dueling partners in the first place, as there were simply more spells to be cast. ---The cloud, as if knowing Amethyst was bound and could not evade, did not choose to send down any bolts of lightning, resulting in a rather mild couple of seconds, as it was a short round. Amethyst seemed to by trying to break free of the spell, but was unsuccessful, as her limbs remained glued to her side, though not for long. Whether it be due to poor execution or poor magical strength on the caster's side, the young Slytherin would find the Full-Body Bind spell slowly but surely weakening, and Guinevere was sure that she would be able to get up and cast a spell in the next round. Lily would also find that the laughs wracking her body begin to subside, leaving nothing but a mild cramp. |

Lily's laughter finally subsided and she straightened up, wincing at the mild cramps that were left behind. Her storm had backfired by not doing anything and as she watched, the Full Body-Bind on Amethyst was wearing off. She gritted her teeth but forced a polite smile at the girl. "Nice Rictumsempra. Your spellcasting is good. Unfortunately your dodging is not." Or fortunately for Lily's case. She raised her wand, getting ready to cast another spell as she glanced in Guinevere 's direction for a split second, before refocusing on Amethyst. Lily was proud of her own spellcasting but at the same time, it had been awhile since she had dueled. She definitely needed to catch up on her dodging abilities because right now those were not good at all. It hadn't been good when she was a first year duelling with people older than her and it had gotten slightly better the more she practiced. But her practicing had been lacking as of late, mostly because she hadn't felt like it. But now seeing herself in a duel with a second year Slytherin opened her eyes to the fact that she reallllyyy needed to practice and as soon as humanly possible.

The younger girl could feel the binding spell slowly weakening. Her joints still stiff from lying on the stone floor, she stood up using a nearby wooden beam's support. Lily was praising her spell-casting, which she was sure was out of spite.
Amethyst disregarded whatever Lily had to say. She could not afford to waste energy talking back and arguing.
The Slytherin could not help but wonder why a fourth-year would even want to duel someone as young as her.
Moron.
That's what Amethyst thought of herself.
She felt clarity wash over her. The younger girl now understood Lily's intentions.
The Gryffindor just wanted to feel confident of her skills by defeating a significantly naive person, and Amethyst was half-witted to grant such a wish.
The storm brewing inside the heiress's mind was reflected by the one above her.
Oh.
The weather-modifying charm.
Amethyst was rather lucky she wasn't struck down by lightning as soon as she got up from the floor.
It would have been embarrassing.
Amethyst glared at Lily as if it were her fault.
It was true, partially.
Amethyst could feel herself wanting to stomp her foot and storm out of the arena itself.
She glanced at Guinevere and wondered if she would be carried to the hospital wing safely.

| --- | ---While the last round had tactically slowed things down, it seemed that Lily had resorted to the tactic of verbal insults at the younger girl. While keeping her eyes trained on the piste, Guinevere shook her take away cup of butterbeer, trying to get at the last bit. Evidently the movement was somewhat loud, as Amethyst momentarily looked at her. She made a sheepish expression and put the cup back down. ---Perhaps it was this moment of distraction that led Lily to take advantage of her position and fire a well timed Knockback Jinx at Amethyst. In the same moment, she too prepared to cast a spell- but wait, why was she aiming her wand skywards? Guinevere wondered if this was a surrender, but was disproved as she heard the incantation of the Weather Modifying Countercharm. She supposed that was a good tactic, as she herself never wanted to be on the receiving end of one of the lightning strikes metelojinx was known to produce. However, in light of Lily's successful flipendo on the younger girl, it seemed that a more proactive approach would do her better. The playing field now seemed more or less even, as neither duelist was under the effects of any lingering spells, and it was anyone's game. |
