Paul nodded eagerly after she described the most important of behavioral aspects of instects. "That's true!" Paul cried. "They don't engage unless you disturb them! Well, there are a few exceptions, like wasps for example. I mean, really, which demon of hell even created them? What were they thinking? I bet it was something like, hey, ya know what we haven't created yet? An insect that will smell sweet from miles away, fly and sting and endlessly disturb all creatures in the surroundings of the sweet things!"

Paul shook his head then, his fringe falling in his eyes from the force. "Really annoying."
One last comment, before he turned right, to go round a tree.

Corrine confirmed she was fine with insects, but wished to take gloves to prevent from direct contact. It sounded smart. Paul actually felt like making a facepalm because of his own ignorance. Of course that she meant that. Paul, you're very slow at times. Thought the boy.

As Cor later spoke about insects crawling on one's skin, Paul shivered, grimacing, as he was imagining the ghastly feeling. "Ew! You're right, we both need gloves." Spoke the boy realistically. "Hm, wonder if those magical ones for Herbology will do. They should protect us against Bubotuber slime, right, so.. they should be enough, shouldn't they?"

When Cor said that Muggle cameras wouldn't work, Paul stitched his eyebrows, coming up with a reflective face expression. "Oh yeah, they told us, right?" The boy apparently needed reassurance. "Nearly forgot about it! The only thing that's not so great about this world. Magic messes around with the gadgets." Hm, I wonder why. Gotta get into the problem some day! Ran through the boy's mind.

"Oh yeah! I'd love to take pics on a wizarding camera too!" Claimed the boy joyfully. "I mean, their photos are way cooler than ours! Have you seen them? They're moving! I saw them in the Daily... something. The newspaper, I mean." Paul paused for a second, trying to contain his emotions. "Anyway, imagine we had a moving photo of the two of us. I'd so put it... hm, on the lights right above my bed! Between my grandma and dad... hehe." Paul's crooked smile awoke to life again, as he babbled about the potential photo. Well, Corrine is like family now, so she can be between their images...

As they were flying deeper into the foresty patch, Cor appeared in front of him, in a moment of his distraction. "H-hey! Where have you sped up to, missy?" Paul's eyes widened, and the boy leaned forward, to accelerate. "My, my... there shall be none of that in this kingdom!" He grinned, joking and sticking out his tongue at her. He soon managed to catch up with her and possibly even overtake her slightly.

However, he hadn't enjoyed his victory for too long, as they soon left the wood behind and came to the shore of the lake. The corners of Paul's lips twitched, as he felt a rush of relief, upon the view of the natural water tank ahead. It could never disappoint. The colours of the horizon, behind the low clouds, were a mixture of pink and orange from the setting sun. The clouds were slowly starting to tear apart, giving space for the setting star and the rising, smaller but no less eager one, too.
He slowed down, letting Cor get ahead. He was feasting his eyes, speed wasn't a priority anymore.

Corrine was more than fine with most insects, but she’d have to agree with Paul on the matter of wasps. Even just one wasp alone was enough to represent hell incarnated, but a whole nest of them was a thousand times worse. Wasps aside, however, the girl was quick to notice how excited her friend was to talk about insects.

Cute, her traitorous mind murmured, a fact which she pointedly ignored in favor of looking at his excitement more in detail. Paul just seemed so excited to find somebody who shared his opinion on the little creatures. Corrine wouldn’t really understand its full extent as she doesn’t hold a fascination for insects that way, but there was one thing she did understand incredibly well.

She knew what it was like to wish for somebody to understand how she felt about a subject or hobby she was incredibly into. To find somebody like that was like hitting a gold mine. You hold it close, and you treasure it well.

The girl was happy she could give Paul that feeling, even if it was about insects of all things.

Thank goodness he agreed with the gloves though, Corrine chuckled nervously. Considering the material of the gloves from their Herbology class, no doubt it was more than capable of standing insects. That’s what she thought at least, even considering what little she did know about magical insects.

“There’s definitely still an appeal for wizarding cameras,” the girl trailed off. After all, even if videos existed everywhere in the muggle world, she could imagine that having moving paintings and moving photos on paper still had its charm. Perhaps even a bit of vintage aesthetic even, much like how polaroids were still incredibly popular if not just for the cuteness factor and convenience.

It’s helped that she’s seen some of the newspapers the other students have gotten during breakfast, and they all seemed quite neat. It must’ve been the same newspaper Paul was mentioning.

With a focused expression, Corrine tried going back to the routine mornings when the owls had dropped their mail onto the dining table for the students. Daily.. Daily.. Paul’s words echoed through her head. I think it was The Daily Prophet?

Corrine had been so busy trying to go through her memories that she almost missed Paul’s following words. Had he just suggested getting a moving photo of the two of them? For him to hold and even put up with his favorite photos?

Her heart skipped. The notion itself was incredibly adorable, and she hadn’t even been bold enough to even think of it. Now that Paul brought it up, however, she really did want one. Preferably one for each of them, as she’d treasure that photo forever.

Attempting to ignore how her heartbeat had raced at the possibility of Paul appreciating such a thing, Corrine could only giggle as Paul fully caught up, flashing him an uncharacteristic bright grin. Being as she was usually more meek, she’s sure that seeing an energetic smile to that degree was no doubt surprising, but she hoped it wasn’t too weird to look at either.

It’d be a true shame if she did, considering she had worked so hard on her appearance just to meet with Paul today.

Seeing how Paul had eventually slowed down, Corrine also made sure to follow suit. Now, their brooms were side-by-side and matching in pace as she, too, admired the sky with twinkling eyes.

The wind was gentler this time, causing her hair to flow properly instead of just whipping. It felt like a nice caress, much like how her father would pet her head whenever they hugged.

Corrine found herself relaxing. There wasn’t an inch of her that regretted being out with Paul today, even if she had to face her fears a bit and go out of her comfort zone.

"So pretty..." Sighed the boy over the view in front of his eyes. He had seen it lots of times this year, yet, each one seemed unique. This one time, 7 October 2025, was... wild. As if the Moon was daring to get up faster than the Sun would get down. The colours of the sky were supporting their endless fight. If it wasn't for the cool wind that was the reason why dry leaves were flying to the ground and his mate's hair wasn't blown back by it (reinding him how nice and smooth her thick, chestnut waves looked in the light of the setting sun), it would seem to be Indian summer.

At some point, Paul looked beside him, after his peripheral sight gave her away. He couldn't help it but came up with a large smile, as a reaction to her grin.

She looks happy. Is she? She hasn't said a word. Is it a good sign, or a bad one? Naturally, Paul, if she weren't happy, she wouldn't be smiling like that. It's pretty unusual, by the way.Paul's mind apparently chose to come up with a train of thoughts about Cor's grin. Well, if you decide that it's positive, it has to be positive, right? -No. It depends on her. Ask her, if ya wanna know so much.Paul huffed a muffled snicker over his own thought.

Gentle blush also started climbing the sides of his neck. Paul wouldn't. Something made him hold back. What it was, Paul wasn't able to describe it yet, nor figure out the full extent of it. He wasn't yet capable of connecting the "something" to the fact that he always felt the warmth inside his chest when they were supposed to meet, the fact that he was genuinely interested in how she felt about stuff and wished to bring positive emotions upon her only, the fact that no matter what she'd wear and how much make-up she'd put on herself, he'd always consider her beautiful. That and much more, the boy had the following seven years ahead to realize.

Paul went forward, checking where they were. They kept the forest behind, having flown several meters into the lake.

"Hey..." Paul hummed, nudging his knee into Corrine's thigh gently, as she was right next to him. "Don't panick, but we're over the water now."

He paused for a second, backing away slightly to give her enough space to check his statement herself. "I'm gonna try doing something that my friend did a month ago. You can join me, but ya don't have to, alright?" Winked the boy, before he tilted his head to both sides, to stretch his neck dramatically, like a professional sportsman before a match or a tournament.

"Wish me luu...ck!" Did the boy exclaim, as he lifted the handle significantly, flying higher than they were. Then, from a certain height, he pushed the handle of the broom down almost perpendicularly, making it seem like he was falling down towards the surface of the lake in what seemed as a free fall. Centimetres from the water surface, he pulled the handle up and flew forward fast. His loud "Woohoo!" , as well as when he dipped his hand into the water for a few seconds, made it clear that all was planned and well done.

Paul helped the broom slow down again, turning around to take a look at his mate with a large, satisfied smirk on his face.

It took this long for Corrine to realize that she hasn’t, in fact, spoken once since they’ve gotten on their brooms. If anybody were to ask her, she’d blame it on the wind making it difficult to hear Paul slightly, but if she were to be truly honest, it’s because she was amazed.

A flying disaster like herself typically didn’t last long without some sort of clumsy mistake or incident, so to see that she was actually capable of flying with just a little bit of help was an absolute miracle.

A miracle that Paul himself made happen, that is.

Embarrassment prickled deep in her skin. Sparing a glance towards her friend, she saw that he was still quite preoccupied, but it didn’t erase the urge to say something. Quite literally anything at this point.

There were so many things she wanted to say, but out of all of them, Corrine really wanted to give her thanks to Paul. In the short time they’ve been friends, she’s been getting better and happier, and a huge part of that was Paul’s doing. Even now, as he finally helped her see that she wasn’t so hopeless in flying, he was still doing her a massive favor.

As her feelings of warmth bubbled over, she finally cleared her throat to speak.

“Paul,” she called out shakily, trying to get his attention. “I think I like you.”

Immediately as she had said that, her heart dropped. That wasn’t what she had meant to say at all! Her stupid brain was thinking of thanks, not “I like you” of all things.

Still, it was too late to take it back. She could only cease the movement on her broom completely, frozen.

Just what had she done?

Will lwk miss them so much.

Paul came back from his free fall escapade soon, grinning. "Hehe, I'm back! Flying is fun, ya see! We've gotta do it more often, las." Uttered the boy confidently. "Well, it's getting late, and I'm starving! Let's head back, shall we?" Said the boy, leaning to a side to turn his broom around and start heading back towards the shed where school brooms were stored.

Paul liked people. He always thought the best of them, unless they proved him wrong. Although that didn't happen often, he could easily show his fangs whenever it did. But the boy was naturally a good-spirited optimist, if not an idealist.
That was why the word like didn't mean that much to him. His parents often told him, as well as his grandparents. His sister too.

It felt different now, though. The point of Corrine's like was just... different in a way only comprehensible to someone who heard it a thousand times in his life, yet, this one occurrence was simply dissimilar. When something as primitive as its sound mattered. Something as genuine as the colour of the sound, the speed which showed how spontaneous it was.

Paul could merely just open his mouth in shock and blinked several times, taken aback by such a serious, deep confession. He stopped flying for a moment, levitating in the air, above the grounds. Paul was avoiding serious and deep. He had no idea how to handle either. He huffed something similar to: "W-what?", for he had no clue how to react.

He heard it and he understood at least sixty per cent of its real meaning. The other forty, he couldn't understand, for the concept of love and romance was an unknown area for him, at his twelve years of age. He realized he would have to say something relevant soon, before the situation became awkward. He just needed to buy some time to come up with a response that would make sense. At least a little...

Dammit. She likes me. What do I tell her? I like you too? -Why not, Turner? It's the truth, you do like her. -Yeah, but what if she sees it... in a bad way? -And what might that be, young man? -Well, it's... the girly way! All the... kissing and hugging and holding hands and... and no fun! Like cousin Drew and his girlfriend! -Ew, that was disgusting. Remember your grandma's birthday party? When they just... couldn't even sit next to each other at dinner, without holding each other's hand? -Yeah, and when I asked him to help me place the banger under the bird feeder and light it, he spoiled all the fun, saying he couldn't, 'cause he was warming the jacuzzi! I mean, who the hell prefers a jacuzzi to blowing out a bird feeder?! It's not that there's anything interesting in jacuzzi. Snorkelled there, didn't see anything! Crazy! I'm never gonna be like that!

"Heavens, Cor..." Paul sighed, his expression becoming really serious, as if the weight of the planet was on his shoulders and he had to do Atlas' job for at least half a year. "I... uhm... thank you. I really appreciate it. I like you as a friend too." And that was it. With his last sentence, he even managed to come up with a small smile, supportive, perhaps.

Just that, nothing else. Dam' you, Paul Turner, really?! Is that all you're gonna say?! Thank you and I appreciate it?!

It made sense, though. He really did like her as a friend, and that was where it was about to end, for the time being.

"Alright, let's go! We've still got a mile to go, at least!" Did he call, then made his broom fly forward again. As they came to the shed, they landed, putting the brooms back and filling out the paperwork. Then, they headed towards the castle.
