Lauren bit her lip fiercely as she recalled how her parents, Astote and Sabrina; her brother, Felix, and her sister, Arianna had bullied her. Her teeth seethed as she remembered how her siblings had written to her parents about her house placement, and how she "spied" on them in the owlery -- did they really have to write that? Probably yes, because they wanted to.

And now she, Lauren would do what she herself wanted to -- to rebel against her family's wishes. As far as she remembered, her family hated pranks and hoaxes. So that was what she was going to do. Anything against their wishes.

But who should I prank? Then the idea hit her. My family's Ravenclaw. And I hate them, even though I love my Ravenclaw friends. So..................

I SHOULD PRANK THE RAVENCLAW HEAD OF HOUSE! AND, WHILE I'M AT IT, I MIGHT AS WELL GET BACK ON ARIANNA BY ACTING LIKE A STUPID IGNORANT KID AND PRETEND THAT SHE WAS THE WRITER OF THE LETTER! THE COURTYARD IS WHERE THE PROFESSOR USUALLY GOES -- SHE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE MY LETTER!

Pleased with herself, Lauren smirked and took out a quill along with a bottle of ink. She was going to write a pranking note to the Ravenclaw Head of House to lure her into the courtyard, where she would begin her prank. How, she wasn't sure. But, if it doesn't work, I'll just leave this outside the door of the Ravenclaw Towers, she vowed to herself. The floor of the courtyard was bumpy and rocky -- her words came out looking like a massive jumble of thorns and spikes, which was the opposite of her neat, text-like handwriting. She scowled in disgust as she saw the barely legible letters:
Dear Professor Lancaster,
I am writing to ask you about where I submit missing homework. I am not really sure where, because the Professor is not in his office or in the classroom. Please provide me with guidance. I am currently in the courtyard, because I do not know where you may be.

Yours sincerely,
Arianna Vanes,
Third Year, Ravenclaw.
Lauren had deliberately dumbed down her handwriting to match that of 7 or 8 years olds. She badly wanted to show her sister's Head of House exactly how stupid Arianna was, and leave a bad impression. If Arianna thought she could get the better of me, she's bitterly wrong, Lauren thought with satisfaction.

Putting her quill and ink back into her bag, Lauren left the letter lying on the floor of the courtyard and hid behind a maple tree, anticipating what was to come with bated breath.

Courtyard, Hogwarts.

At this point, there was not much Jessamine aspired to other than being someone the students could rely on. There were still three months before the summer holidays, and that meant that each of these children were essentially her own. That meant that, when a kind student informed her there'd been a note left for her in the Courtyard, having brought it all the way up the stairs, she immediately read it. It took some effort, given that the handwriting was not exactly the best. She did recognise the name, though: Arianna Vanes, a third-year student. She didn't know the girl very well, but she'd made an effort to memorise names. That the girl had dropped the note outside of Ravenclaw Tower surprised her, though; had she not been able to get inside? Surely a fellow student would have helped her with the entry riddle if it was too difficult.

Usually, she would have offered her own office as a meeting spot. After all, it had the comforts of a predictable climate, music and tea. But the girl had stated she was – would be? – in the courtyard, which was not altogether an awful place to meet. With a small sigh, Jessamine shrugged on her coat and made her way all the way back down the stairs, glad to at least be headed downwards this time. When she shouldered open the large doors heading to the Courtyard, she gave the overcast sky a quick, furtive glance (would it rain?), and, upon ascertaining that she did not yet require an umbrella, headed out.

Jessamine wasn't the best at observation (that, or she was humble, who knew), but she considered herself not to be oblivious. She scanned the Courtyard, expecting even a hint of a student's hair to peek out, or otherwise to hear something. However, there was nothing, at least not at first glance. Jessamine pursed her lips and looked both ways once again, then uttering a small, almost disappointed sigh. Was this like the adult version of knock-a-door, run?

She suppressed the urge to roll her eyes, instead slipping her hands into her warm pockets and listening to the peaceful sound of the fountain. She'd always loved this place when she was younger.

Content, she turned, ready to leave...

Lauren rolled her eyes as she saw professor Lancaster turning towards the exit. Her prank idea would fail if the Ravenclaw Head of House managed to leave the courtyard. Then she would not have a chance to impersonate Arianna and prank her. She would no longer be able to see the long-anticipated look on Arianna's face as she got punished for something she didn't commit.

That would be her revenge. Lauren Vanes would never let anyone escape her wrath if they tortured her as much as her family did. She knew exactly how her family despised acts of rule-breaking. The young Slytherin would be beyond excited to see her parents' disappointment directed towards her. She would enjoy every moment of their anger. But the doubts crept into her mind again. This time, it was valid.

What if they suspect that I did all this? It's not the first time you know them, right? They don't want to accept that Arianna would do such a thing. They'll blame everything on you! If Arianna got a bad grade, in their twisted visions, it would be your fault! Entirely yours!

Right. That was reality, and Lauren had to accept it.

She cursed herself under her breath as she saw that there wasn't much time left. Soon enough, she would miss the chance. Why did her thoughts always try to steer her from reality?

There was no time to think about that now. She had to act fast. And act now.

She shot out of the maple tree and prepared to launch her grand prank idea... only to realise that she didn't have one. The letter was all she had decided to prepare.

Crap. She was left standing on the bare floor of the courtyard, panicked for reasons she did not know why.

Perhaps it was because she felt vulnerable without the cover of the maple tree she had hid behind earlier. And that she was about to get caught. Or because she felt as if the so-called 'prank' had been for nothing after all...
