She tightened her fingers to the edge of the canoe as the four of them shoved it into place. Listening to the refreshing voices around her, Denisse kept her gaze downwards. Jay was excitedly talking about glitter and rainbows, Dahlia talking to Jay about ways to dye her hair, and Ophelia talking about painting techniques she had seen before.

She looked at the arts supplies that were nearby; jars full of glitter, reflecting the light. The brushes were coloured and were kept in almost all parts of the room. The streamers, colourful and big and small sizes, lay open over the floor. It was overwhelming, but also strangely inviting. Denisse grabbed a pot with very faint lavender paint, and she twisted it open.

As for the colour, she thought it was nice that it was so close to twilight over the Black Lake—soft, quiet and pretty.

She spoke almost inaudibly due to the noise of the boathouse. “I think this'll work for the base,” she spoke softly. "The designs stand out as the colour is light, but not too plain,"

There was a little smile at the corner of Denisse's mouth. She brushed the glitter off her fingers. Denisse carefully immersed the brush in lavender colour, her hands were steady even though her heartbeats were racing. The lanterns in the boathouse window shown on the pale color as it spread across the canvas. Denisse kept painting, careful to cover the base evenly. She liked how the lavender softened the rough texture of the boat to make the boat feel quieter and more welcoming. She took the glitter particles stuck to her fingers, stopped, and looked at the rest of the girls. “Waves could also be added to its sides,” she said in a low voice, as if to herself. “Blue and silver, maybe," When the coat finished, she rinsed her brush and took the silver paint.

" Huh- well, hardly anything to be sorry for" he waved off with a small smile, " I was just making sure. Nice to know you have a grandfather that doesn't dictate what you can and can't do. Even if you say that he wanted you to be a ballerina - sounds more to me like an old guy that wants to see his granddaughter reach further heights as a ballerina compared to just a carpenter - knowing you enjoyed dancing more than carpentry anyway" he says casually, assuming Eun-ji's mention that her grandparent 'used' to do carpentry meant he was too sick to do more, or his hands or legs weren't working the way they used to, so he hasn't done carpentry in a while. Blisfully unaware of the reality, though confident enough in his guess to not ask further questions. Perhaps it was his first blunder, to focus so much on the conversation he wanted to have that it took away the attentiveness he would've liked to show to the Ravenclaw. Still, he kept it at the back of his mind, wondering if he could bring it up in the future.

That is.. if she wanted to see him again still.

At the mention of him being a liar, Hanako let out a genuine - soft laugh. " Not this time, I'm afraid. Wrong answers only come when someone already concluded an answer, but I'm not just here to ask for a confirmation of something I already know. Of course, I have an answer I'd like to hear but above all your .. truth is what I'm looking for. "

Truth. Coming from him. A version of him a year ago would've laughed at his face by now, and another side would've scrambled to ducktape his mouth and send him on one of the working boats hoping to sail off into nowhere. Anything was better than asking a question you can't expect an answer from. But … this was different.

He nodded at the mention that they had strayed away from their agreement. Though the anxiety crept in his chest, he put his focus on paying attention to Eunji instead.

"….we could do that" he nodded again, a bit more slowly this time. Like something still weighed on his mind.

" Do you .. feel like its the sort of kindred spirits that spark brightly when it's around the other, and dim out into nothing if we aren't?"

He may have asked about it in a roundabout way but the question was clear, and his next question might've been able to seal it.

" We're graduating soon" he states, like a gentle reminder.

1) While everything written is true for Dido, much is intentionally incorrect (eg: Dido is not in Ravenclaw)
2) Apologies for the length, I just wanted to post so you could react to something!
As Dido noticed Tina walking towards her, she instinctively grinned, a small involuntary curl of her lips which spelt out the pride she felt as Tina came to her first. Not that Fawkes girl who was apparently her room-mate. Not Angel Dayes, Dido’s own room-mate, who had seemed closer to Tina than she was to Dido (she ignored the fact that Angel wasn’t actually at the event as far as she could tell). No, Tina went to Dido Bleaklane because she was Dido’s best friend.

Tina!” she greeted in response, smile widening even further as she shuffled over to make space on the ground beside her. “Of course we can work together. I hope you don’t mind that I got started?

She took the lemonade and sipped a little, the slightly bitter sourness reminding her of the days when she and her mother, who must have been actively avoiding working on her book, used to make lemonade or orange juice, invariably managing to shoot some of the acidic juice into their eyes. As she lowered the cup, she surveyed the boat, checking her progress so far. Looking at it fully for the first time, Dido couldn’t help but acknowledge that it just looked bad. Not even “artistically different. Plain old boring bad. The colours clashed and, in far too many cases, shapes were almost-but-not-quite touching, leaving an unsatisfactory sliver of pale wood between them.

We can start again, if you’d like to or we- Well you could just paint over bits you don’t like. I don’t mind- genuinely!” she stuttered out, embarrassed to be admitting failure.

It was also refreshingly new, this truthful admission. It, just like the lemonade, came with both stinging pain and delicious sweetness. It was… nice.

No matter what Tina decides or how dreadful her suggestions could be, Dido would enthusiastically agree, too “weirded out” by her own honesty to continue the sincerity she had shown in the moments before. Then, following her agreement, she first would grab some empire biscuits, fruit and, unable to resist chocolate, the coated pretzels before helping Tina decorate/paint the boat, if slightly less involved than when she had been on her own, content to let Tina take the lead while Dido munched on snacks.

Ugh I love my autistic girl 💖
Coded by Melissa Blake
Ugh, I hated Sky. Well, not hate hate, I'd never have the gut to hate her, even if I truly wanted to, not that I ever wanted to, she's my sister, but...

In this exact same moment, with a paint brush in my hand, I hated Sky.

Confession time: I don't know how to draw. Or paint. If I can color, it's by pure luck. Because in all my years of doctors and people training me, they once did the famous test every prodigy kids is terrified of: The one I called the "ability test". Basically, they put you through hell and back looking for a perfect area to fit you in. They'll make you write essays to see if you can fit in the literature area. Solve equations for the math things, and it goes on. In the artistic field, I found out I sucked.

But hey! I was perfect for the science field! It couldn't be that bad, it can always get worse.

But my lack of creativity and art could not be a burden for my sister. Nope, at all. She did not need to know about my... Struggles.

So I just did what I learned to do once and never stopped doing ever since: Spirals. One over here, another one over there while Sky took the creative role. Hopefully, if I did enough spirals, she wouldn't notice about it, right?

Oh, I'm such a mess.

"... What do you think about girls liking girls? And I don't mean it for the boys liking boys, but in my opinion, girls who are in love with other girls have it harder that the boys. At least, that's what my aunts told me. They had to go through hell and back to get Zoe's adoption, just because they were lesbians."

Pride Month. This was a term she was very used to. Born and raised in London, Rosaline Everhart had known what Pride was about from a very young age. Her family, while her paternal side of grandparents might be a bit conservative, her other family members kept a very open attitude. Her aunt Juliet had brought her to London Pride almost every year after she could remember things. All ages of people came out of their houses or even cities to be on the street, together, cheering for their presence, for anyone’s presence. She only had vague memories about her first Pride, but her aunt loved to tell the story that baby Rosa’s eyes were so wide and her smile was so big watching the colorful crowd move past them. It was always a fond memory to her. Though clearly she could not join the parade this year. Juliet would also only know she went to a boarding school and have no idea about all these magical wonders at Hogwarts. As she thought of this, she furrowed her brows. The light in her ocean-blue eyes dimmed, like a storm nearing. It was not the greatest feeling to keep an amazing part of her life a secret from her very dear aunt. This was not the first time she had opinions about the statute. The sunlight shone at her stormy blue eyes. The sun peeked behind the thin cloud like a naughty child playing hide and seek. Squinting, she shifted her focus back on the road.

In a colorful striped polo shirt and wide-leg Bermuda shorts, Rosaline was on her way to the Pride boat errand. It hadn't come to her attention that Hogwarts would hold this kind of event before. Yet she was thrilled to register the fact. As soon as May left, the flyers were all over the campus. People were talking about the event and how they would celebrate it. Everything looked so colorful and vibrant. Just what June should look like. The color even branched out to her hair. She had her chestnut brown tied into two braids with various colors of ribbons. It was shining under the sun like a tiny rainbow.

Madonna’s song came across her mind. The season, the month, was so right. But there was no wrong time to recall the diva’s song. Rosaline couldn’t help but hum the lyric. “Let your body go with the music…Hey hey hey.” Vogueing wasn’t anywhere near her alley, but she always wanted to learn it at some points in her life. The precision, the charisma, and the powerful poses. Although she doubted she could be like that one day. She was still only good at social dances.

The young Everhart hadn’t really given her orientation a deep thought. There was a vague concept of the sexuality spectrum to her knowledge. Yet she hadn’t comprehended or experienced ‘love’ or ‘attractiveness’ in her life, in her own perspective.

An image with a pink hue of a boy with black hair appeared. Rosaline shook her head with a hint of rosy pink on her cheeks. No way. He was just a friend. Her thoughts carried her mind away again. It happened a lot when she was walking, alone.

Finally arrived at the event place. It was a party of so many colors. There were even all rainbow colors of food on the table and more colors of decorations that they could use on the Pride boat. The rainbow always made her think of the Wizard of Oz. It was a great movie, and she loved Judy Garland. She couldn’t forget her singing voice. Skipping to the desserts table first with the melody in her head, Rosaline grabbed a plate first, then placed some cheese and apricot scones, strawberry rolls, and more raspberry empire biscuits on it, which she wanted to share with her group mates. She remembered she had signed up with some other first-years. One was Leo; the others were students she hadn’t met before, but she couldn’t wait to see them. Holding the plate steadily, she went to the area where all kinds of decorations were piled up. Her face lit up as she saw the bisexual flag. It was the second flag her aunt taught her to remember after she told her which color symbolized what meanings on the rainbow flag. Rosaline picked up the pink, royal blue, and purple flag and some pom-poms that were in the same colors. She wanted to pay tribute to her proudly-being-bisexual aunt with the flag and all these colors. Also, the color palette was pleasing to the eyes.

Being more careful to not drop anything, she strolled to their boat. Her two groupmates were already there, a boy and a girl, who she had not met before. Hogwarts was still quite a big place. The boat was already painted in white. Was it the base paint? She was never familiar with painting or anything that she had to make by hand by herself. The experience today would be very refreshing to her. The two people in her group looked really nice. The boy seemed quite shy, but he carried a calm demeanor. The girl was a bit quiet and looked like she had brought quite a lot of supplements! But. Where was Leo? Her first instinct was to find the person she trusted when she entered any new situation. She turned around and observed the crowd. Okay, he was nowhere to be found. Maybe he would be here later. Nervous. Every time she needed to initiate a conversation with people she didn't know, she would be a bit nervous. Although she may always seem confident enough to handle different scenarios, deep down, she tried to be as good as possible every time.

“Food delivery.” Rosaline quietly approached them and knocked on a wooden board material nearby. “Does anyone want some strawberry rolls or biscuits? By the way, I am Rosaline Everhart, from Gryffindor.” She said with a wide grin, placing her plate on a cardboard box in between her groupmates. Turning her gaze to the boat, she tilted her head and asked, “What’s our plan now? I brought some pom-poms and a bisexual flag.” She held the flag and waved it in the air. It was fluttering in the wind, proudly. A warm smile spread across her face. She was excited to decorate the boat and started to enjoy the event.

Leo had felt unsure at first about joining an event he didn’t know much about but after a little bit of research he was intrigued and excited to join the event. He ended up signing up with Rosaline and then a couple other students were in their group as well that he hadn’t met before. Leo decided to dress for the occasion, keeping it casual and cool since they would be doing painting and work outside on boats in the early summer heat. Donning a rainbow striped short sleeved shirt and jean shorts and a pair of older sneakers, he made his way down to the boathouse to join the group. He realized he was a running a little late but hoped he would be able to make up for it by helping out the group as much as he could.

When he arrived at the event the first thing he noticed was the multitude of colors everywhere. It truly seemed to be such a colorful and fun event and he hadn’t even begun. The next thing to catch his eye was the table set up with rainbow treats of all sorts. He could smell the sweets before he even got close to the table. He was already running late but he couldn’t do manual labor of any sort without fueling up properly right? Leo quickly shoved the lavender macaron in his mouth followed by a piece of the blue cloud bread before his attention turned to the area where there was a bunch of supplies set out for the students to use on their floats.

Now that he had stuffed his face a little, he went over to the supplies and looked around. There was a lot to choose from, and he didn’t know what the group would want to do for the actual theme and such for the float so he just decided to grab whatever he could carry. Stacking up poster board, a rainbow cardboard cutout, some flags of every kind he could see, lots of glitter, boas, and rainbow streamers. He figured this would be a good place to start and they could always come back for more supplies. Now he just had to find his group and hope he hadn’t missed too much since he really wanted to help and participate in the float.

He slowly wandered through the crowd of students with his arms full, looking around. Specifically he was looking for Rosaline since he didn’t know the two others who were joining them. Once he spotted the familiar brunette girl, he smiled and made his way over to the group.

Leo was surprised to see all the supplies already surrounding the boat they were to work on, and even more surprised to see they had already painted the boat white with primer. At least they hadn’t done much decorating yet so he could still help with it. “I’m sorry I’m a little late, but I brought a bunch more stuff to add.” He said and lifted the pile of items in his arms up a little to show them off to them. “I’m Leo, by the way, Leo Noxley.” Immediately he pulled out his manners to introduce himself to the other students first, “It’s a pleasure to meet you both.” He added before turning to Rosaline and smiled, “Hi Rosa.” He didn’t want to be impolite and only focus on his friend so he turned back to the others and said, “I’m excited to work on this, what did you guys want to do for it?”

Once he placed the items he gathered down, he glanced at the boy who had been doing the painting so far and realized he had brought a bunch of glitter too as did the other girl who was there. “Looks like we have plenty of glitter at least,” He joked and chuckled softly before kneeling down beside the boy and the boat. “What colors should we do for it? We could paint the flag on the sides.” He suggested while holding up one of the pride flags he had grabbed and waited to see what the others thought.

Pride. What a curious concept. It was pride month — a month dedicated to celebrating the notion of embracing one's identity. Pride encompassed many things, for identity was difficult to define. It represented a long fight against a history of repression and assimilation, for integration into societal norms; its colours symbolised a sense of solidarity, a lack of shame, social stigma, and discrimination. Pride month was the month to promote this. Pride month was the month of love, the month to be proud of who you are.

Ebony was a part of the LGBTQIA+ community herself. Having learnt to embrace her identity — although it had been a struggle, especially when she was younger — she was knowledgeable of the stereotypes that surrounded it. The pride parade served as a way to welcome those identities and to dispel those stereotypes, but she had yet to attend one in her years at Hogwarts. The exact reason was unknown even to herself. Perhaps she had been afraid of what people would think; perhaps she had yet to fully embrace herself; perhaps she had been repelled by the crowd. But now that she was here, it became apparent that the pride parade was simply attended by people like herself, people in the same boat, literally. It was a relief to see that Hogwarts was so open and so active in destigmatisation.

As the girl walked into the boathouse, she was immediately bombarded by colour. Normally, she would have been opposed to the oversaturated atmosphere, but pride day was different. The colours held history, the colours held pride, the colours represented identity. They served as a medium of self expression — and as an artist, that was what she strived for. Self expression. And so, she took the time to absorb the amalgamation of colours — the rainbow clothes and floats and glittered paint — in an attempt to embrace that. She was even dressed in colourful attire for once, her usual black t-shirt adorned with splashes of multi-coloured acrylic paint that she had applied herself with an artistic flair.

The day was dedicated to painting floats — or rather, the school canoes — with the colours of pride. She was to paint with Lily, a fourth-year whom she had met a few years back, and Lex, Lily's friend (or perhaps something more than that?) whom Ebony was yet to be acquainted with. She offered an uncharacteristically enthusiastic wave upon approaching them, a glimpse of a smile etched on her face. Today is supposed to be a happy day. And so, she allowed herself to be happy. She allowed herself to exhibit a raw happiness that she usually hid under a pretence of nonchalance, a mask that she held to protect her identity. That identity could today be let free, if just for one day.

"Hi Lily! And hello Lex, it is nice to meet you."

Now standing before Lex and Lily, it was clear that something was going on. The glances that they threw at each other — though they likely believed they were being obscure, furtive — overtly emanated a sense of attraction, of teenage love. Ebony herself was no stranger to the feeling of butterflies in one's stomach, and she liked to believe that she could identify it when it was presented before her. And — was that a blush that painted Lex's face? It appeared that the Ravenclaw was to be third wheeling today.

The brunette settled down to get to work on the pride float, subtly displaying her artistic skill as she helped to paint shimmering silver words upon rainbow stripes. There was some small talk here and there as the group painted, but the ever-present awkwardness and timidity from both other individuals present was evident. Though she was no master at small talk herself — far from it, in fact — she attempted to diffuse the tension. "So — how's everyone doing today?"

Lily turned as she heard a voice and smiled at Ebony. "Hey long time no see! This is my friend, Lex." She introduced Lex, trying not to look to flustered. Or look flustered at all. As they got down to painting, they all made small talk. Lily and Ebony hadn't talked in over two years, back when Lily had been dating Oliver Brown. Things obviously had not worked out between them, and they had decided to go back to being friends. Lily has been on and off relationships since then but they never seemed to last. Her last one had been Bailey Ledges but he abruptly disappeared with no word to her at all.
Once they finished painting the boat, Lily stepped back and smiled at her two friends. "I think that looks pretty damn good if I do say so myself ." She said with a bright smile. The three of them pushed it out into the water once the paint had dried and they all sat in it as it floated down the lake. It was a beautiful day for this and the sun was out. Thankfully Lily had put sunblock on it else she would've been a burnt crisp.

“... sounds more to me like an old guy that wants to see his granddaughter reach further heights as a ballerina.” It took all her willpower not to flinch, when Hana started using present tense whilst referring to her paternal grandfather. Her family barely ever mentioned the old man now. His very existence was wrapped in pain and guilt so great, everybody cowardly avoided the topic for years. No…he wants me dead. The thought came cold and familiar, slipping through her mind like a dull knife. In a way, Eun-ji was glad Hana clearly arrived at his own conclusions since it meant there would be no further questions and fewer opportunities to scrape against the old wounds. For the very same reason, she did not bother to correct him and simply hummed in agreement.

That habit continued even when the conversation shifted elsewhere. Not because she suddenly agreed with him but simply…because he laughed. Genuinely so. And that was enough. If he believed there was no wrong answer then who was she to try convince him otherwise? Let him seek his answers as he saw fit. She only had to answer. And if he doesn’t like it, then he’ll just be proving my point. Even so, the Ravenclaw still chose her words carefully. Still terrified to see him go despite knowing it would be better for him. Some cowards fled. Some cowards lied. She preferred the latter.

“Do you .. feel like its the sort of kindred spirits that spark brightly when it's around the other, and dim out into nothing if we aren't?” The follow up question brought Eun-ji back from her musings faster than a bolt of lightning. Since when was Hana the bold one? She didn’t even notice when her index finger started twitching. It was a subtle movement, nearly invisible, but it always made an appearance whenever her emotions rose high and threatened to spill over. Her face hardly ever gave her away but that damn finger! Ye-jun lived with her for a couple of years so he could always tell when something was wrong precisely because of that little traitor. It was beyond irritating. Hana probably wouldn’t know that particular tell however. Surely, he didn’t pay that much attention to her.

“I think…” She began, then faltered. Once again, choosing her words carefully. “We spark brightly, when we are together…in a controlled environment.” It wasn’t exactly a crystal clear answer but then again, neither had been his question and it’s not like Eun-ji could just outright tell him, she wanted him nowhere near her family. That there were ugly things she didn’t want to show him and it could only end in disaster if he met the Hunts. They would snuff out any light the two of them may have ever shared together. “Sparks in unregulated environment often end up dying…or, joined by other sparks, start a deadly fire.” If their affection was mutual, she might have came up with more excuses to tether Hana to her miserable life for bit longer but since that was not the case, it would be incredibly selfish to do so. It would be cruel to ask him to stay beside a disaster he never chose knowingly.

“Yeah. We really are graduating, aren’t we?” It felt strange to say it aloud. Too final…but there was no avoiding it. “And the world beyond that is vast and full of interesting people. I wonder who is going to be lucky enough to meet the great Hanako Tone outside these tall stony walls. They are in for quite an adventure that’s for sure.” The witch said with a soft smile even though she couldn’t bring herself to look at the boy. She couldn’t look him in the eyes and pretend she didn’t mind they’d be parting ways. Indeed, she envied those future strangers already. The people who would stumble into his life and be allowed to remain there for years to come, collecting memories she would no longer be part of. Eun-ji liked when they sparkled together but she was so used to living in the darkness that it begun to feel like home. It was predictable and, as ridiculous as it sounded, it made her feel safe. A light would inevitably reveal the deep cracks she had so carefully hidden in it and she could not allow that to happen.

From a very conservative village in the southern Scottish highlands, where the church bells rang even at the same time, and well, feeling unusual for her age due to her lack of feelings for the opposite or even the same gender, Denise felt rather out of place in an event about mostly love and sexuality.

In fact, she didn't know loving someone of the opposite gender was possible until she attended Hogwarts and saw fewer same-sex couples. Perhaps she didn't really understand love in general, romantic love, of course, she is clearly not heartless and cruel. She didn't really understand why one would enjoy kissing, hugging, even sharing spoons, plates, or utensils with anyone but herself, which was highly looked down upon, and while she didn't really remember her parents, she did know that even her own parents did not kiss or hug each other, as her grandmother commented was the proper way for married life.

Despite her lack of understanding, boat decorating seemed fun for the young 12-year-old. At least there are snacks, and Denise felt rather hungry upon entering the boathouse, which she didn't even know Hogwarts had a boathouse until reading the advertising poster.

You learn new things every day, Denise thought.

Well, for most 12-year-olds who have already grown up and have crushes, Denise felt out of place. But she did have another concern indeed.

The reeds floated in Comrie as she remembered a school field trip in 3rd grade with her favorite teacher, Mrs. Higgins. Comrie has a confluence of three rivers, which are the River Earn, Lednock, and Ruchill. Setting off, she remembered staring at the water, and back then, she didn't know how to swim. Her grandmother, in fact, wasn't able to teach her either way, and was unable to swim as well.

Well, did mountain girls like Denise need to learn to swim? Their bigger concern was the higher attitudes, and Denise had good endurance. However, she should have watched out, as she was staring at a tadpole swimming with its mother and its huge flux of siblings, one of the girls, Olivia Campbell, shoved her into the water. She didn't remember much, but Mrs. Higgins saved her, and she sat on the banks of the river confluence where she was dropped off, feeling angry and depressed.

She didn't really have to worry about water, for she did learn to swim eventually and even did water polo over the summer, but the fear was still there.

The girl she was collaborating with, Sabrian Lyons, seemed nice enough, maybe a bit strange, but who isn't strange in a school full of magic? Aly Salinger, the host, was turning everyone's boats into different colors of blue, green, yellow, etc. Maybe Denise should ask her to turn their boats pink; surely Lyons would not mind, and it seemed like a fun color.

Skipping the pumpkin juice and grabbing a pink strawberry roll, she asked Lyons, "Ready to start? Any ideas?"

"Well, I was thinking of maybe creating a boat like a butterfly, with wings expanding from the boat. That way, it would say balanced and cohesive, and I think it would also look pretty in the waters. What do you think?"
