The potions classroom was paradox in motion. Though the dour stone walls and sullen color scheme granted it a pointedly lifeless look, it was animated in ways other classes were not. The bubbling of a boiling potion in a far corner was the ambient noise that greeted the first years as they shuffled into the class and took their seats. In the opposite corner, the overwhelming aroma of asphodel radiated from an uncorked phial. At a table at the far end of the room, a row of knives chopped dutifully at what Cassiel identified as a Mandrake Root.

Normally, Cassiel disliked excessive stimulation. But unlike the racket of the Great Hall at mealtimes or the Quidditch pitch during a tournament game, he was unbothered by the commotion of the potions classroom. In fact, the noise and motion found here offered an ambiance that Cassiel found soothing.

What was decidedly less soothing, though, was the prospect of having to find a partner for their next lesson. To him, in an overwhelming majority of cases, group work was an exercise in misery. Even when paired with a competent partner, Cassiel's hard head made him difficult to work with. Concession did not come easy from him, and in the instances where he must contest, he does so only after a hard-fought argument, complete with petty jabs and an excess of childish pouting.

Cassiel just barely suppressed the displeased expression that threatened to bloom on his face as he stood from his seat to find his unfortunate partner. Most of the other students already found theirs, which left him with scarce options. His best bet came in the form of a fellow Gryffindor. He knew her name, Ophelia, but the extent of his knowledge did not extend far beyond that. At the very least, he knew she wasn't a pest. If she was, he would've known about it already.

"You need a partner?" Cassiel's question came out more as a statement, with only the slightest of lilts at the end to make itΒ technicallyΒ count as an inquiry. Without asking, he sat down in the vacant seat next to her.

𝕿he day had been weirdly quiet and boring for Ophelia's usual liking, but right now, she enjoyed the actually non-existent silence. Ever since the news she'd gotten from her parents the day before, as indifferent as she still feels about them, she felt like the world had been shut down. She wasn't sad or anything, but she was still processing the whole message.

The potions class that day didn't seem to be helping her either. She was usually quite well-behaved during the lesson, not talking unless she was asked to talk, and taking notes about almost everything that was being said. Today, she had almost forgotten that she was in class; no notes were taken, instead small doodles of eyes, lips, and cats she hadn't realized she was drawing covered the page.

As she saw everyone move around, she thought the lesson had come to an end, before she noticed they were just finding themselves partners and sitting next to them. Ophelia didn't even bother to look for someone; if anyone wanted to be partners with her, they'd ask. If not, then she could brew the potion -whatever potion it was to be brewed, since she was barely listening- alone, just fine.

She did not expect someone to ask her if she needed a partner. Looking up, which was quite unnecessary as the boy sat next to her almost instantly, she noticed Cassiel Ahlstrom, a pale, brunette boy she'd never really had a conversation with. She decided to ignore the way he didn't wait for her to respond; she would've said 'yes' anyway, and just hummed in acknowledgement. "What should we do?" She asked, not at all bothering to hide that she was, for once, not listening to the professor.

Cassiel, being self-involved in the way children of his ilk often were, didn't have an inkling of what kind of student Ophelia Vanderbilt was. Despite the fact that her notes were covered with miscellaneous doodles rather than notes, he assumed she wasn't a terrible one. At the very least, she'd never brewed a potion so disastrous it drew any sort of negative attention from him. She seemed nonplussed at his sudden appearance, a sign that he chose to take as a good one.

He flipped to the appropriate page of his textbook. The potion they were brewing was simple enough, but Cassiel was determined to not only do things right, but to earn high praise for his efforts. The last letter his parents had sent to him contained nothing but cloying adulation for his older brother, who was apparently flourishing as an Auror. Afflicted with the need to prove his worth while shrouded in his brother's looming shadow, Cassiel resolved to work harder at school.

"I'll get the equipment, you get the ingredients?" Again, though his utterance was technically a question, Cassiel stood to collect their tools before Ophelia could either agree to or reject his proposal. He went to fetch equipment shelves at the back of the room, his Potions partner at the forefront of his thoughts.

Though his selfishness had a tendency to render him blind towards the feelings of others, even Cassiel could detect his partner's deflated mood. One didn't need to have an in-depth knowledge about someone's inner workings to catch the signs. From the slouch of her shoulders to the faraway look in her eye, Ophelia's mind was very clearly somewhere else.

The thought plagues him as he returns to their desk. It was possible that the quality of his work could be affected by the daze she's lost in. Cassiel shoots her an inquisitive look.

"Are you all right?" Though his inquiry lacked finesse and subtlety, it was not devoid of sincerity. He genuinely was concerned about her mental state, particularly if he could be affected by it.

OOC sorry for the late reply
𝕿aking a look at the page Cassiel had opened, Ophelia flipped her own book's pages to that page. The potion, Antidote to Common Poisons, didn't seem to be that difficult, but Ophelia knew better than to just assume it wasn't.

Nodding at what Cassiel said, she stood up to get the ingredients: Bezoar, a piece of Unicorn Horn, Mistletoe Berries. She put the ingredients on the table and organized them. When Cassiel walked back to her and gave her a curious look, asking if she was alright, Ophelia considered just ignoring the question and starting with the potion; she did not want to seem mean by doing that, though, "I'm fine," she nodded at him, let's start this,"

Ophelia shook her head slightly and decided to stop thinking about the news she'd received the day before. If it was going to effect her potion-making abilities, it better not be present at all; and if she didn't feel sad at that time, she better not feel anything right now. She didn't want Cassiel to think she would ruin the potion just because of whatever was going on in her head.

She crushed the Bezoar into a powder with a bit more force than necessary, realizing that, she glanced at Cassiel to make sure he didn't notice it. Her gaze then shifted to the open book to see what the next step was going to be.

Cassiel came from a household where the flagrant and forthright expression of ones true feelings was frowned upon, so Ophelia's reticence was nothing out of the ordinary for him. Still, regardless of how self-motivated his worry may have been, he was mildly affronted when she brushed aside his concern with little more than a perfunctory response. At the very least, she could have concocted a vaguely believable lie, if only to assuage his easily bruised ego.

"Suit yourself," he said with a shrug, trying to sound more unaffected than he actually was. It was obvious that things were not fine with his Potions partner, but Cassiel didn't have time to fret over problems she withheld from him; with an antidote to brew and a Potions mark on the line, they had more pressing matters to attend to. The Antidote to Common Poisons wasn't the most complex potion to make, but the intensity with which Cassiel reread its instructions implied that this very brew would be the difference between him passing and failing Potions.

While he placed their cauldron upon its iron stand, Ophelia worked at crushing their Bezoar, and the excessive force with which she used to pulverise the ingredient was far more honest of a response to his inquiry than her earlier insitence was.

"Everything's fine. Sure." He stretched the word out, making it abundantly clear how unconvinced he was. "Does that Bezoar happen to owe you money? Because you're roughing it up like it does." His unhelpful comment, dry and droll, was delivered with a raised eyebrow and a pointed look.

𝕿hat the lie hadn't been completely believable occurred to Ophelia seconds after she told it. Sighing, she thought, what's said, is said. Although she appreciated her partner's concern, she wasn't ready to talk about the event yet. That was her. She'd probably never want to talk about that event. She was also glad that Cassiel didn't push the matter further.

Looking back at the book and reading the instructions a second time, Ophelia was convinced that this potion was one of the less-complicated and yet complicated potions in this year. Though deep in her mind, she knew that the first-year potions were going to be the easiest potions they were going to learn. The school system was always like that, unless Hogwarts had decided not to play by the one book of common sense.

Everything is fine. That was her thought at Cassiel's next statement. As said, she was grateful that the boy noticed her being moody (which was not his fault and Ophelia felt bad about acting this way around him at this time), but at that statement, she realized he still hadn't let go of that fact. "It does, in fact," she said playfully in an attempt to switch the subject in a fun manner, the poor Bezoar being her prey in this matter. She added 4 measures of the Bezoar in the cauldron and looked at the small amount of leftover. Were they going to put it in the trash?

"Anyway, what is to be done now?" She asked Cassiel, not bothering to read the instructions again, having already forgotten the next steps. That wasn't unusual for her; due to that, she read the instructions that came after the already done step every time, but always forgot what was to be done after. Without the instructions, she wouldn't be able to brew a potion. Unless she memorized the whole page.

It wasn't like Cassiel to be so curious about other people's business, especially when their evasiveness made it obvious they were unwilling to expound further. But in this instance, Cassiel had more than just a horse in this race, his entire paddock was in play. Though it was in Defence Against the Dark Arts class where his older brother truly shined, Aurelius was also a proficient potioneer. To be anything less than great in this class would mean Cassiel would be behind his brother in yet another category. A potions partner who was out of sorts could mean the difference between a passable potion and a perfect one.

But her lighthearted response gave him hope that perhaps her troubles weren't so influential that they would completely distract her. "How much?" He played along with the girl's good humour, feeling surprisingly levelheaded despite pressure he felt to brew a stellar potion. "Anything more than a few galleons and you should considering getting the knife involved."

At her inquiry, Cassiel cast their textbook a quick glance.

"We add the Standard Ingredient." Cassiel picked up the small drawstring pouch of herbs from their desk before measuring enough for their potion. As he sprinkled the correct amount into their cauldron, he gave Ophelia a sidelong glance. "Then we heat it at a medium temperature for five seconds."

Cassiel drew his wand from his cloak pocket and lit the burn below the cauldron with a perfectly cast Incendio. After five seconds elapsed, he waved his wand above their brew.

"Now we wait. My favorite part of brewing a potion." Though his tone was dry and droll, there was some truth to his claim. Despite his ambition to perform well, Cassiel was no potion master.

𝕺phelia was glad that Cassiel had decided to play along with the changed subject, and even more so when she semi-forgot about her grandmother. "A few galleons; knife would be the greatest idea," she grinned at him.

Potions, like any other subject except History of Magic, was a subject she didn't struggle with. Her unbotheredness today wasn't something that happened regularly, and she was glad that Cassiel didn't change partners. Even if her mind was somewhere else, her academics would always be one of her top priorities, and nothing would change that.

"Waiting is your favorite part?" Ophelia asked, " You struck me as someone who'd enjoy making the potion, not waiting for it to finish," she was shocked at Cassiel's statement, there was no denying that, but waiting for the potion in the cauldron was... boring, at least in her opinion. She didn't say that out loud, though; everyone had their own opinions, and she didn't know Cassiel very well, so she didn't know how he would take it if someone told him what he enjoyed was boring to them, "I personally prefer making the potion," was what she decided to answer.

As they waited, Ophelia decided to continue conversing with Cassiel, so that the silence didn't become awkward, "How do you like Hogwarts so far?" She asked, "Sorry, better question, did you know about Hogwarts before? Or are you a Muggle-born?"
